1. George is gay? Hmmm. Well I wonder how all the Christian Star Trek fans will react. I'm bisexual so of course I don't mind at all. I met him once at a convention and he was a nice guy...and funny.

I'm a christain and I'm glad he's happy. I don't like that lifestyle, but I respect it, and tolorate it.

I'm a Christian, too, and it doesn't matter to me one way or the other. My brother-in-law is gay (and it is a huge loss to women, 'cuz he looks just like Kevin Bacon) and he's completely happy with who he is and so is everyone in the family.

I'm glad that Takei has lived long enough to enjoy the more relaxed environment that exists today...how horrible to live in shame over something you had no control over.

    God bless him.

  2. As for being lost, don't worry there's enough tour guides around here that you can't move 2 feet in any direction without running into one of us lol I've been watching Star Trek all my life going back to 1969 (though I don't remember anything about it prior to about 1972 when I was 3). I've watched every single episode, cartoon and movie more then once as have several other members here. So if DR can't answer your questions it's a safe bet that there's someone here that can.

    352481

VBG knows all .... I can always trust him to have the answer or at least know where to go get the answer to any Trek question I have.

Welcome Silent Jo. I haven't been out here for a while, but I'll keep checking back to this thread to see how your DS9 voyage may be going!

  3. I know how you feel and I don't blame you.

What we really need is for something really good to happen Trek-wise to keep the Trek discussions lively rather than all this down time to find out just how opposing our viewpoints are!

Those topics that were recently closed were not at all acrimonious. I'm a little puzzled and troubled by the censorship myself.

I won't be back for a while either ... how sad.

  4. I've been trying to come up with what "offends" me and I can't think of anything. I do get fightin' mad when my faith is referred to as "crap," my sister's meds are being dismissed as sugar pills (or worse, heroin!) by a layperson, and someone actually calls me a "flat earther."

However, I don't think we should ban particular topics out of fear of offending people. Geez, everything offends somebody.

It's so easy to just say whatever comes to mind out here without considering the consequences or how it's going to sound. We talk to faceless people by typing on a keyboard. We say things here we'd probably never say face to face, or if we did, we'd try to say them a little nicer. Maybe we should all read our posts out loud to ourselves before we click on the "add reply" button, just to make sure they sound polite and civil.

  5. It's an interesting book and a well written piece of fiction. The only thing that soured it for me is that Dan Brown claims a lot of things that aren't true to make the story work, and then states that nothing in the book is made up when a vast amount of it is pure fiction.

All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate.

Is the exact statement he uses, and it's complete hokum.

    346645

Agreed 100%. I've got problems with several authors including Dan Brown who have been elevated to bizarre heights for nothing more than works of fiction. Then they seem to lose sight of the work and begin making the talk show circuit ... it must get REALLY confusing for them because all of sudden you have them making these crazy statements like the one you quoted.

  6. Every once in a while I buy a t-shirt that actually is roomy without hanging to my knees! I think that they are irregulars, they must be because you can't find them on purpose.

My husband got a t-shirt from one of his students as a souvenir from St. Thomas. It was too small for him, but it was just right for me. It actually hit me just right above the hip, but it was loose through the shoulders and chest. I wore it so much it vaporized and now it's floating in the atmosphere somewhere above us.

    What a great shirt.

  7. The Defiant showed up in the first episode of season 3. Worf didn't come on board until season 4.

Up until Worf showed up, if Sisko wasn't running the Defiant, Kira was. Then after Worf showed up being the second ranking Starfleet officer on DS9 he became the dude in charge of the Defiant unless Sisko was on board ... at least that is how it appears and that is my understanding.

Now Worf has a special relationship with the Defiant which is kind of funny and happens shortly after his arrival ... I won't tell you what it is, 'cuz I'm not sure how much spoiling you want out of us.

I really enjoyed the episode "Babel" and you're coming up on one of the best ones of the early seasons "Captive Pursuit." Later on in the first season I liked "Dramatis Personae" and "Duet."

  8. One that a lot of people thought were cool back when they first came out: the shirts that changed colors with body heat. Yes, I know that the concept was cool... I can agree with that. But some areas are warmer than others so it kinda really looked goofy when someone lifted their arms up and the color change was so drastic in their underarms. I only knew of the shirts, but someone once mentioned that they made other clothing items out of that stuff...

    346031

It's like they made pit-stains a fashion accessory! Gross.

  9. Let's get serious for a minute!

All right, I've calmed down quite a bit since my initial shock over Snape killing Dumbledore. I still think he's probably a swine, BUT I had a thought the other day.

What if Dumbledore himself had become a Horcrux? Could it be possible that the slip-up he made when he was trying to destroy the Marvolo ring Horcrux resulted in that particular piece of Voldemort's soul being transferred into DD?

His hand is all rotted and we never really got a full and thorough explanation of exactly what went wrong with the Marvolo ring. Snape is the wizard who fixed him up after the ring mishap ... what if they both knew that DD had taken on the soul fragment? And there was something that occured there on top of that tower, a signal if you will, that told Snape to "kill" DD and thereby destroy one of Voldemort's Horcruxes?

The hate and revulsion on Snape's face may well have been directed not at Dumbledore, but at the fragment of Voldemort's soul that DD was carrying? And maybe they held off on their plan for Snape to kill DD until DD had spent enough time with Harry to teach him and show him what he would need to know to defeat Voldemort?

As Snape is fleeing Hogwarts, he's telling Harry what he needs to do to become a wizard who stands a chance against Voldemort: "Close your mind and shut your mouth."

O.k., so I've found a way to feel better about Snape's defection! I know I was pretty adamant about his guilt, and pretty mad at him when I first finished HBP .... but time has worked its magic and I feel less emotional about the whole thing now and more apt to think rationally.

  10. Worf doesn't show up until the fourth season...the Enterprise has just been destroyed in the movie "Generations" and Sisko requests Worf be assigned to DS9 to help him deal with the Klingons. Way of the Warrior is a two-parter featuring Worf joining the cast and some big doings with the Klingon Empire and Gowron.

What was cool about them adding Worf to the ensemble is that they didn't get rid of another cast member to do it. He just joins in and it really is amazing how quickly he becomes part of the DS9 cast.

They had runabouts from the beginning, I believe. If you are talking about the Defiant it shows up around the same time that Worf does. Maybe in the same episode. I've seen these so much, I forget sometimes!

  11. Long-distance relationship DO work if people are really in love. My husband and I were over an hour separated during our entire courtship. With anyone else, the relationship would have been doomed to failure, but because I was the ONE for him and he was the ONE for me, we perservered.

From the girl's perspective -- we women put up with a lot of "abuse" but eventually we get tired of feeling that we are in a one-sided relationship where we do all the caring and working.

I can think of two relationships prior to meeting my husband that ended but could have been rekindled with a sincere effort on the part of the man involved ... getting back together with someone is not impossible as long as the woman has not found someone else. If she's finally found someone who is treating her with love and showering her with the attention she wanted from you but didn't get, you may be out of luck.

I really hope not for your sake. Good luck.

  12. The best thing about DS9 is its story arcs ... oh, and it's secondary characters ... great writing ... whopping good push leading up to its final episode ... oh, and its great actors (some aren't so good at first, but really improve and grow on you as you go).

I thoroughly enjoyed the first three seasons. Naturally, there are some "tankers" but that is true with every show. The characters that I feel changed and evolved the most over the course of the series were Dr. Bashir, Major Kira, and after much consideration I'm going to throw Jadzia Dax onto this list.

For the most part, the cast clicked from the very first episode. Strong chemistry. If you liked O'Brien on TNG, you're gonna love him on DS9. Watch the relationship between him and Julian Bashir ... it's a joy to watch.

Quark/Rom/Nog are just hilarious. I used to not like Ferengi episodes, but now having watched the run of this series three times, they are among my very favorites. Armin Shimmerman's Quark always gets the funniest, best lines in most episodes, but Rene Auberjoinois' Odo is his own brand of comedy. And Andrew Robinson's Garak is a big plus for this show. And I think Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) is the best Trek villain ever ... even including KAHN.

Bajor's spirituality and faith is very different for Star Trek ... yes, you've met species who have religion, but you never get to spend much time focusing on them. Avery Brooks' Sisko is a reluctant participant who becomes one of the faithful over the course of the series. I love the episodes about him being the Emissary.

It's my favorite Trek because it was the most character driven. It had a very large cast, the focus on Klingons, Cardassians and Bajorans was very satisfying ... an in-depth study of a handful of races/planets and not just a "alien of the week" thing going on.

I envy you seeing all of these for the first time. When you get to episodes like "The Visitor," "Way of the Warrior," "Rapture," "For the Cause," "In Purgatory's Shadow," "By Inferno's Light," and "In the Pale Moonlight," I hope you'll come out here and tell us what you thought!

  13. Ok... here is another, guys who wear shirts like they are thinking it is the 70's and they are going to a disco. Yes, sadly I had to see this today at work... a customer was wearing it.

    345819

Like Disco Stu from The Simpsons? Or one of the Solid Gold dancers?

The 70's were horrible! Hair on guys was bad, bad, bad ... and now every kid I see has hair like Peter Brady! I actually saw some boy wearing TUBE SOCKS the other day, complete with maroon and gold stripes at the top and pulled clear up to his knees!

  14. I hate tube tops, any shirt out of metallic material or having any glitter at all, crop tops on pregnant women (gag), and those stupid looking spaghetti strap gut- and boob-huggers that girls wear with regular bras (letting their bra straps show). I also hate those dumb shirts with the bras built in where the very spaghetti straps on the shirt itself look like bra straps.

For every single step women take forward toward some modicum of dignity and equality, there are three whores wearing clothes too small for them to take us back at least two.

  15. In all the hubbub about witchcraft in Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, blah, blah, blah, I typically roll my eyes at how silly people get over that kind of thing. All these fundamentalists and the like getting all up in arms over these fantasy books that are no different or any more dangerous than The Wizard of Oz IMO.

Don’t forget; it’s the same people talking as the people that put us back into the dark ages for the EXACT same reason. If a book disturbs you so much you fell like burning it (or anything equivalent) you need mental help.

    345481

What's really sad about your comment is that if I had claimed to have been abducted by aliens my mental compentency would be less in question. What's being questioned now is my sanity for believing in Christ and having a valid concern for the souls of my fellow man.

I don't believe in "Answers in Genesis," I don't believe the earth was created in six "man" days, I don't believe in a literal translation of the Old Testament. I DO believe in a literal translation of the New Testament, and in its way, the Da Vinci Code strengthened that belief for me. My concern is not for Christians reading this tripe, it's for people who have no background information other than the writings of feminists and people like Dan Brown who have difficulty accepting the simplicity of the message because it wasn't "sexy" or "spooky" or politically correct enough for their tastes.

  16. I read it and found it to be total blasphemy.

I threw it out with the garbage, which is where it belongs,IMO.

    345447

In all the hubbub about witchcraft in Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, blah, blah, blah, I typically roll my eyes at how silly people get over that kind of thing. All these fundamentalists and the like getting all up in arms over these fantasy books that are no different or any more dangerous than The Wizard of Oz IMO.

The DaVinci Code is the first book I have ever read that I felt guilty as a Christian for having read. IMO it was the first real example of blasphemy I had ever truly seen and understood for what it was. A real eye-opener, and no mistake in the words of Samwise Gamgee.

I've read all manner of things that were not exactly what the Lord would probably want me reading, however, I was so offended by The DaVinci Code that I felt dirty after having read it and GUILTY for even having it in my house. I paid good money for that book and I TREASURE my books ... I tore pages out of this one and threw the divided book away in separate garbage cans. I was actually worried that someone else might read that dangerous piece of trash that I purchased with money I wished I'd just have put in the offering plate instead.

If you really knew me and how liberal I am about books, video games, television and movies, you would be better able to appreciate how strongly this book must have affected and offended me.

  17. What You Leave Behind, obviously, is my choice. DS9 was the best series and that big 6 episode push to the end episode was very cool ... the ultimate Trek. Odo goes home, Sisko communing with the Prophets, Kai Winn dead (praise God!), Martok the Chancellor, Worf the ambassador, Bashir got Dax, Rom's the Nagus (!), and Quark is still tending bar in wormhole junction while the big boys pass him by at light speed!

I just love to think of them all just going about their business even though we can't watch them at it anymore.

  18. I voted for Scooby.

If this is supposed to be a poll regarding the original Scooby Doo series, Scrappy wasn't in it. He wasn't introduced until a later series.

    345155

You are exactly right ... Scrappy came later.

I found him somewhat annoying, but not as annoying as Scooby Dumb.

I didn't like it when they started having guest stars either ... Sonny & Cher? The Harlem Globe Trotters? Don Knotts? And why were they always showing up as themselves?

    Shaggy was always my favorite.

Question: Were Fred and Daphne boyfriend and girlfriend? Sometimes it seemed that they were (which is probably why they were always trying to get rid of Shaggy/Scooby/Velma), then sometimes it seemed that they weren't (when Fred would be ogling some girl, or Shaggy would be teasing Daphne about boyfriends.

Clarification please, from one of you experts.

  19. You think Buffy sucked?  I'm sorry to hear that your so very opinionated...I have to wonder if you've actually given the show a chance.  Like Babylon-5, you can't really jump in at the middle...otherwise you'll be lost.

    345139

Well, now that is pretty much the pot calling the kettle black. I'M so very opinionated ...:bow:

Yes, we tuned in to Buffy briefly after those jerks at FX replaced my beloved 90210 with that Gellar vehicle. All of sudden I had two hours of my favorite show yanked out from under me ... instead of being able to watch 4 hours of 90210 every day, they cut me down to two!!! Oh, the humanity!

There's just something I don't like about female heroines ... I am woman, hear me roar and all that tripe. I can't stand that Jennifer Garner either ... alias/shmalias ... can I please just have my Kelly/Dylan and Donna/David back now? :tear:

  20. I wish they would go the mini-series route for each of the series where the cast is still young enough to hold a phaser believably. I think the TNG folks are starting to look a little worse for wear, but some serious physical training and good make-up could salvage the crew well-enough for a really good, well-written 5 or 6 part mini-series that would have so much meat on it we'd all feel like we were on the Atkins diet!

Likewise for my darling Deep Space Nine ... a good solid 8 to 12 hours featuring Sisko returning from the Wormhole would be beyond cool for me. They could use those Avatar and Mission Gamma books ... the story is already there, just adapt it for the screen. Incredible.

Hell, I'd even watch a Voyager mini-series as long as that Braga character was not involved in its creation. And Berman needs to get out of the equation as well.

I might even give Enterprise a chance to please me if B&B turned it over to a more capable creative staff. Bring back Piller, Behr, Moore and Co. They are the people who really care about Trek and about us.

So my answer is "other" ... no t.v. and no movies until Berman is GONE.

  21. Peter Jackson not withstanding, if you want me to pay more then $100.00 for a show that aired before I was born...by God you better give me a reason!!!.

I mean- any given season of Buffy is loaded to the gills with special features and only costs $44.99 brand new!

    344936

Buffy needs all those special features to sell those DVDs ... the show sucked. They'd have to pay me $45 just to take it off their hands.

  22.

-Dukat is dead (how sad really)

    344560

We don't really know if he's dead or not, he could be trapped with the Pa Wraiths in a similar way that Sisko is with the Profits. If a movie was ever made (which I know likely never will be made) we could see Dukat as the bad guy and Sisko must come back to stop him once and for all.

    344732

That would be awesome ...

  23. I don't know about this one. I kind of respect the need for regulations on what you can and cannot have hanging from your balcony or apartment. It's too bad she can't fly her U.S. flag and all, but if we don't adhere to the rules we've agreed to, then all we have is anarchy.

Purposefully, we bought our house in an older neighborhood that predates homeowner's associations and such because we didn't want to have a bunch of rules hanging over our heads and to have to pay a monthly fee for the privilege of having them!
