  1. You know, anyone knows that if they are going to a movie created by Kevin Smith it's going to be a certain "kind" of movie! What the hell did Siegel expect to see? Lawrence of Arabia? Cheaper by the Dozen?

What an idiot. Of course, I pretty much disagree with every single one of his reviews, so what the hell was I really expecting out of Joel Siegel?

  2. I am changing my TNG pick from "Best of Both Worlds I & II".

I am now going with TNG's second season jewel "Measure of a Man."

Frankly, after rewatching that episode last night, I think that "Measure of a Man" could define ALL of Trek. Start to finish an engaging story with an urgently needed message for all earth's cultures of our time.

  3. It sounds good, but I'll have to wait and see what he and his minions come up with for the next movie.

As a fan, I'm hoping for three things ...

    1. No Prequel to any of the series.

    2. No "mirror universe" story.

    3. That they not ignore Deep Space Nine (or Voyager for that matter) when they are coming up with the story. I don't care if the new movie doesn't include any DS9 characters or storylines, but I will be monumentally pissed off if they go about writing a screenplay that disregards and "eliminates" what occured on the Deep Space Nine series.

At least he's a fan of the original series and movies, but I'll need more from him than that to make me happy. There's been a lot of Trek put out there since Kirk and the gang made peace with the Klingons in TUC... let's hope he takes the time to watch all of that before he puts a movie out there.

  4. Well, last night we watched "Superman The Movie." My 7 year old just LOVED it. I felt perfectly safe in allowing him to watch it ... there is no cursing, there is no "gangsta" beating scenes, very little real violence because Superman takes care of it before it starts.

Now there will be a lot of parents who haul their little ones to see this new movie just because it's "Superman." But let me warn any of you with children that this is not a movie suitable for every young child. You should see it first yourself before you take your kid, because only you know what would upset your child.

I'm going to be pretty detailed in this spoiler, so don't read if you don't want to get spoiled. If you are a parent wanting to take a young child to see this flick, read on or PM me and I'll be happy to give you a heads up before you head to the theater.

I didn't really like how they foisted this "sadder but wiser girl" Lois Lane on us. Why in the world would we need to have Superman fathering an illegitimate child with Lois and have her raising it with another man she is not married to and pretending that man is the kid's dad? C'mon, people want to take their kids to see this movie ... they don't want to be forced into a premature conversation about the birds and the bees because their kid wanted to see the new Superman movie.

Then, Superman got beaten up in an extremely violent way by Lex Luther's thugs on his little island creation ... it went on for a way too long in movie time IMO. Upsetting and depressing to watch. And Superman "died" once and almost died again, and I'm just looking at my watch wondering how much longer I'm gonna have to sit through this movie about "Pushoverman?"

Then they kept using the funny lines from the first Christopher Reeve movie, I guess trying to make fans of that feel good about the inclusion of the material, but it fell completely flat whenever they did it. In fact, I was a little annoyed that they were trying to play this new flick off as some sort of homage to this earlier and better incarnation of the franchise.

Superman The Movie had a lot of heart and a lot of charm .... Superman Returns had neither.

  5. Because Braga was not a fan of TOS, he had no respect for the history of Trek, and yet, Berman raised him to the upper echelon of the TNG bunch. So many others were more deserving and, I believe, would have done a better job.

This is just my perception of what occured and most interviews and articles that I have read seem to support this view. His personality grates on my nerves any time I've seen him interviewed, especially on the special features of the TNG DVDs.

That's it for me, I don't know about anyone else.

  6. We just saw Superman Returns this weekend and aside from an outstanding performance from Kevin Spacey, we really weren't all that thrilled with the movie.

We were so disappointed in it that we went out and purchased a copy of the Superman starring Christopher Reeve. Now that's Superman ... as for this new creation, well, let's just say I like a little more SUPER in my SUPERheroes.

    Anybody else see this flick?

  7.

For the PS2 and PS, you can't go wrong with the Legacy of Kain series (Blood Omen 1 & 2, Soul Reaver 1 & 2 and Defiance). All of them have very deep interesting stories, beautiful graphics and star two Trek alumni, Rene (Odo) and Michael Bell (the Bendi from "Encounter At Farpoint")

Are these games you mention more "fighting" or more "puzzles" or a good combination of both? That's what I liked best about RE0, RE, and RE2 ... the puzzles and keys were as much or more part of the game as the fighting. RE4 was fairly heavy on the fighting, but the game was just beautiful to look at so I'll cut it some slack.

I'll look at my game store for the series you've mentioned.

Do you find the graphics better on GameCube or X-box? I can't imagine a game "looking" better than RE4.

    Thanks for the tips.

  8. I absolutely love video games, but I really hate PC games. I just don't find sitting at a computer to play a game very relaxing or comfortable. Feels too much like being at work.

We have PS2, PS1 and GameCube. My favorite games are Resident Evil (all but RE3 ... I thought it was kind of lame), Eternal Darkness (why in the world has there not been a sequel created for that game?), and Silent Hill (first one only, I found the sequels to that kind of lame).

We're always looking for new games to play, but most of them pale in comparison to the ones I've mentioned above. Anyone have any suggestions? I also enjoyed the Parasite Eve games.

  9. Is it going to be released initially on Xbox and later on PS3? Or is the release supposed to be simultaneous? I can't seem to find that info, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right places!

We're planning on getting a PS3, but I AM NOT purchasing an Xbox just for this game. I bought a Gamecube because RE went that route (and I think that Zero and the reissue of RE1 for Gamecube were both really, really good) and I still play RE4 Mercenaries at least once a day. But I have to draw the line somewhere on these gaming systems ... I'm running out of TVs!

RE5 looks incredible from the trailer and I have been wondering what happened to Chris Redfield.

  10.

Considering what we have today, don't you think it would have looked silly to have Phlox's sickbay looking more primitive than what today's state of the art facilities look like? And I'm referring strictly to looks, not function since McCoy's sickbay was technologically more advanced than Phlox's.

I think it was silly to set the show in a time period prior to the original series for this very reason. I just did not buy that Enterprise events were supposedly occuring earlier than the time of Kirk and Spock. There's just no way that was going to sell to me and many others like me.

  11. You can live in Kentucky if you know how to:

1.) Hold a fifth of bourbon or a can of beer while dancin'

2.) Kick your shoes off before you go outside to work in the yard

3.) Plant shrubs around your old-timey big satellite dish so it won't spoil the feng shui in your front yard

4.) Explain the connection between the Baptists and the bootleggers in the dry part of the state

5.) Explain to someone not from Kentucky that Bourbon County is "dry" and Christian County is "wet."

6.) Use your food stamps to buy a loaf of bread and use the change to buy a carton of cigarettes

    and

7.) Accept the fact that no matter what part of the state you live in, be it a trailer in Hazard or a palace in Louisville, Lexington, or Northern Kentucky, people who are not from here still think you are a barefooted hillbilly with a couch on your porch.

  12. Granted, this flick came out a couple of months ago, but we just saw it last weekend.

Being huge fans of the video game Silent Hill (and I mean the first one), we were anxious to see how in the world they were going to stretch it into a feature-length film.

I must say that I was really pleased with how it was handled. They completely rewrote and reworked the plot of the game, but somehow it didn't upset me. I thought the cinematography so accurately captured the feel of the game that the changes in the story didn't matter.

And I thought that the ending of the movie was definitely an improvement over the ending of the game. It was a lot less convoluted and much easier to understand. It just made more sense.

Did anyone else see this movie and what did you think of it?

  13. This was a really HARD question ... all are so qualified for the job. But I vote for Kira because of the particular "command" in question. She has a foot in both worlds (Federation and Bajor), she is uniquely qualified to command DS9 now that Sisko is off in the wormhole. The job is really huge, but because of her background and understanding of the tasks at hand (Bajor's eventual admission in to the Federation, the rebuilding of Cardassia, the spiritual perspective now that Bajor's lost its Kai), she's really the only one for the job at this point.

The others are all going to be great captains, but their jobs are not as challenging as the one Kira will face. I go with Kira Nerys.

  14. Let's not judge or jump to conclusions again about Star Trek XI until it is actually written..I for one will not offer an opinion about it until I actually see the movie..

Yes, but if we don't voice our concerns about what they do with the next movie and the movie is a flop because of it, they will have spent whatever credibility they have remaining on something less than good and we'll never see any new Trek again.

I hope they take a good long time developing this and that they involve quality folks who really care about the series and are actually FANS of the franchise. All of it, not just TNG, not just TOS.

  15. I'll tell you one thing about Sisko ... he would never have put acting-ensign Wesley Crusher in ops on DS9. We're rewatching TNG right now and I cannot for the life of me understand why Wesley is on the bridge, basically stealing bridge time away from officers who have actually graduated from Starfleet!!!

Sisko would have sent Wesley down to engineering or even had him doing inventory with pre-cadet Nog in Cargo Bay 6 ... you gotta earn your stripes under Sisko's command no matter what the "Traveler" might tell you.

(Heading off this argument: The Prophets wouldn't have cared one way or the other about the linear corporeal happenings on a space station so that would not have been any sort of directive given to Sisko by them.)

  16. if they were going to do a t.v. series prequel to TOS, Phlox should have been using Windex bottles in sickbay.
Well now, that's just silly. The retro look wasn't in till the 23rd century or otherwise the intergalactic phenomenon known as "the Cheapening" hadn't taken its course in the 2150s. Just like how they brought back reality television for the 2001st century in Doctor Who, along with those vintage spinny space-stations even though grav-plating has been long-around.

What on earth are you talking about?

The "Retro" look of TOS didn't have anything at all to do with a particular style of design and everything to do with what was supposedly "cutting edge" during the time of Kirk and the gang. Those spray bottles in sickbay would not have been there just because of fashion ... McCoy's sickbay was supposed to be state of the art.

Why Phlox's sickbay looked closer to TNG/Voyager/DS9 stuff made absolutely no sense and was distracting to me personally.

  17. I watched Enterprise a few times, but I never "gave it a chance" as you say, because I LOATHE prequels in any series, not just Trek. The Star Wars prequel trilogy was all right, but pretty boring really when you think about it. We all knew how it was going to end .... I just couldn't get all worked up over it.

As far as Trek goes, I just plain don't care how things got invented now that I've seen those things in action.

I don't really want to spend a lot of time on a "Romulan War" when we already know how it turned out and I'm just not interested in the details. I want to move forward, that's all.

I've said it before and I'll say it again ... I found the entire premise and the SETS of Enterprise completely distracting ... if they were going to do a t.v. series prequel to TOS, Phlox should have been using Windex bottles in sickbay.

I wouldn't pay to see a prequel at the theater and I probably wouldn't rent it either.

  18. My husband and I are of the opinion that there will just about have to be another Trek television series before whatever studio owns Trek now agrees to foot the bill for another major motion picture.

All the casts are getting too old. Trekkers and Trekkies are completely divided now into various camps ... I don't think that we can get everyone on board for any one cast. I think a mixed cast is a bad idea. I think there have been too many novels written "after" the endings of DS9, Voyager and TNG that fans have embraced so enthusiastically no one would be satisfied with a movie plot that did not include elements from these novels (even though they are not considered "canon").

Maybe it's just me, but the only DS9 movie that I would want made at this point would include (or at least not ignore) the events in the Avatar books I & II, the Mission Gamma novels, and Unity. I'll bet many Voyager and TNG fans feel the same way about their books.

As for Enterprise, I'm just flat-out completely uninterested in ANY prequel to ANY of the series, so I wouldn't go see it. I wouldn't even rent it.

  19. It sounds like "myspace.com" is a place to get together with 50 or more of your "closest friends" and engage in conversation.

That really wouldn't work for me because I only have five or so friends and if I'm honest, 3 of those are only acquaintances. Mainly, the only people I want to talk to in a general way are living with me in my house!

When I want to talk about Trek, I come here. When I want to talk about Harry Potter, I go to hpforums.com (but not before I check the news at Mugglenet).

I waste enough time out here already ... do we really need another place to hide from the real people in our lives? I think I'll go take a walk around my neighborhood RIGHT NOW and actually have some face time with real people.
