  1. This is an interesting idea, but it is hard to compare opinions the way it is organized. Wouldn't it be easier to list the shows that were in the 5 star category, then those in the 4star category and so forth.

The short answer is no, just kidding. :naughty: I really don't mind how you want to lay out your post, personally I started the thread off with the episodes in season order because I think it is easier to view trends over the course of the season. But its no big deal either way.

    Oh I see. That's a good point!

  2. This is my first message board, so I do not have the kind of connections I have seen mentioneed in the posts above. Nor do I have the time to be involved in other message boards. However one member of stf.net I have met in real life. That is Captain Freeman, who I think no longer psots here. After arguing with him in a thread, and then seeing his explanation of his "name' on this board, I knew exactly who he was. I met him once at a conference (related to our profession....not a Star Trek conference. I have never been to one of those).

  3. As one who has been here the whole 27 years, and during the years of just reruns of TOS, and movies, I can only say that I hope I will always have the opportunity to enjoy some new Star Trek series. I hope Enterpise lasts, and the franchise continues to put out new movies/series.

  4. This is an interesting idea, but it is hard to compare opinions the way it is organized. 5. I was disappointed with the season finale of Enterprise, and sick of the timeline changes, but I love the series. I may criticize it, but not because I want it cancelled. To the contrary, I want it to continue its full seven year spread.

I agree with what VBG said about harry's comments, and with others who do not need to have everything line up perfectly to be able to enjoy real Star Trek. Since I have watched Star Trek since when TOS was on the air in 1966, I recognize Star Trek when I see it. Enterprise is Star Trek.

I have a couple of comments about some of harry's comment.

LYING VULCANS: Vulcans are unable to lie (“The Enterprise Incident” [TOS] and “Data’s Day”[TNG]) yet in “Enterprise” they’re lying deceitful pigs!
What was Spock's full-blooded Vulcan brother named...was it Sybok? He was Vulcan and he was deceptive, and in a TOS movie..so that was even before TNG. Spock was involved in lying and deception ( not reporting their true whereabouts and condition in TUC), as was Valeris, in the TOS movie The Undiscovered Country. The Vulcans are mostly honest, but there are exception seen even in the TOS era!
VULCANS WITH FEELINGS: We all know that Vulcans show no feelings yet in “Shadows of P’Jem” [ENT] the Vulcans show anger at the loss of their outpost and the Vulcan Captain was obviously angry at being misled by Archer THAT DOESN’FIT THEIR PROFILE!

Worse still in the episode “The Seventh” [ENT] T’Pol’s feelings of guilt almost killed her, Now that’s going too far!

Spock's father Sarek showed affection to his wife by touching fingers at the end of he TOS episode "Journey to Babel." In VOY, there was an episode which showed how hard it was for Tuvok to actually get to the point where he was in control of his emotions. To me "The Seventh" fit right in. T'pol had a struggle...not the Vulcans who were trying to help her. Why would you expect all Vulcans to have perfect logic, and perfect self control? In our society is everyone at the top of the class, or are some people more proficient than others in their mastery of social conduct? Vulcans aren't "logic robots".

VULCAN SECRETS: If Kirk and his crew knew nothing of “Pon Farr” (which was the case) as it was a closely guarded secret, then how is it that everyone knows about it in “Enterprise”?

A few people knew that T'pol was out of control--the ones who tried to stop her...even those few did not all know the reason behind her strange behavior. Phlox knew what was going on.....he did not necessarily make it known why T'pol was out of control. And things do get hushed up...there is no reason to believe there is a record that would be passed on.

THE PRIME DIRECTIVE: Granted, the prime directive doesn’t actually exist in “Enterprise” however they are continually concerned about the impact they might have on other less advanced cultures, that being the case the events in “A Piece of the Action” [TOS] could never have occurred. BUT THEY DID OCCUR!
It was Phlox and T'pol, the experienced aliens, that raised the questions of impact on society that had the Enterpise crew thinking about it. It was not the ideas of the humans. So it is not clear these issues would have arisen on all human ships! This is one contribution to Federation that was not originated by humans first. There is no reason to believe that on all human ships they were practicing something like the prime directive. To get everyone to do it is why they came up with a directive. So the Horizon crew was likely to make the mistake made in the TOS episode A Piece of the Action.
LACKING HUMAN TECHNOLOGY: The humans in “Enterprise” are some of the least technologically advanced people around, well behind the Vulcans, Andorians, Klingons and even the Ferengi. How are meant to believe that these people will become the leaders of a great federation of planets within ten years? That’s not only implausable it’s LUICROUS!
As I have said in other threads, the Xindi arc provides reason for the humans to lead the Federation. it could never be because of technolology. I'll quote myself from the thread Enterprise is Militaristic, with some editing to answer this remark.

    Click for Spoiler:

This season has finally given me the ability to believe that humans, and not any these other species, should lead the Federation, by key things that Archer has done, things that I think are the characteristics that eventually dominate the Federation, but are currently demonstrated only by the humans with regularity. Namely, in spite of Archer's supposed single-minded focus on his desire and duty to save earth, he has also expended decided effort on the behalf of other species. The two strong examples of this are 1) destroying the Xindi prototype of the weapon to keep the Andorians from having a terrible weapon with which to threaten the Vulcans ( to the astonishment of the Andorians); and 2) sending the Enterprise to finish off the spheres while just a team goes to continue to try to stop the weapon (why? because the Xindi are facing the same magnitude of destruction as the humans.)

Contrast the Xindi and the humans: the Xindi acted completely in terms of self-preservation, which is why the weapon exists.

Contrast the humans and the Vulcans: Vulcan logic would not allow them to risk going into the Expanse to aid the humans ( but the humans now have a complete solution to the Vulcan's problems in the Expanse). Logic would not permit the Vulcans to risk themselves for the humans. Vulcans only help when it is logical.

Contrast the humans and the Andorians: The Andorians are driven by their suspicions of the Vulcans, and self-interest, and sought the weapon for themselves.

Even in acting in self-interest and self-preservation, the humans have considered a bigger picture, and the value of others besides themselves. Yes, they have also done a couple of morally wrong things, but even those situations were moderated by better values. For instance Archer left food and supplies for the race he stole the warp engine part from.

What has been the impact of the humans?

The Xindi, who had been manipulated by the sphere-builders, discover this by courageously considering Archer's evidence--questioning closely held beliefs of long standing.

The Andorians sent copies of the prototypes schematics secretly to Archer before parting---sharing. ( And later Shran is there to help as the weapon closes in on Earth.)

It remains to be seen what the Vulcans do, but as Trip said, " I would love to see Sovall's face..." when the humans accomplish their mission.

Why should the humans lead or be a leader in the Federation? It all came out in this arc. The Trek saga needed all these pieces. It was at times tedious. But it is GREAT science fiction!

And, in spite of the Enterprise bashers, this season has laid the foundations for humans being a lead race in the Federation...broader vision, self-sacrifce, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, tenacity. And time and experience will teach humans everything else they need to know.

All of the facts I’ve given here are ATTRIBUTABLE, LOGICAL AND IRREFUTABLE, it is literally impossible to put forward any workable argument against them without making excuses or fabrications.
What you put forth as fact are your interpretation of fact. They are not particularly logical....you give reasons, not logic.

  6. I have about fourteen favorite episodes from TOS, and probably around ten for TNG. A few of them are (not in any order):

The Offspring (I think it is interesting that Data did not try to reproduce again. Of course, would you, if you knew your child was then going to be taker away by the state? Admiral Haftel, or what ever his name was, got what he deserved----no new androids.)

    Family

    Inner Light

Some of the Klingon episodes--especially with Worf and Alexander or his brother.

  7. In the movie First Contact, when Captain Picard decided to disobey orders and go to the aid of earth in its battle with the Borg cube, Picard gave his bridge officers the right to object, and he would note it for the record. Data, speaking for the others, said, "To hell with our orders." They refused to let Picard stand alone in his choice to disobey a direct order, which protected Picard, because if he had been court-martialed, they would have had to court-martial the entire Bridge crew---a loss of too many good officers. At least they refused to let Picard risk consequences alone.

In the movie Insurrection, Picard's officers refused to let him fight for the Baku alone, confronting him as he tried to quietly sneak off.

  8. I'm glad it's there...I'm sad it's there. Glad because it helps me to not miss the first episode...I will be busy when it airs. Sad, because I'm sick to death of cliffhangers. Of course by now, as a Star Trek fan of long-standing, I should know the season will end with a cliffhanger.......but I haven't yet settled down to my long wait.

  9. Yes, born-again, full gospel baptist / pentecostal.

Early Christians didn't have Churches. worshiping in your own home is how Christianity had it's beginnings, and is how I practice. in my estimations, I am no less Christian than the next person.
This is fine as long as you are not isloating yourself. Early Christians didn't have churches, but they did gather together...they did not stay apart from other Christians. The apostle Paul warns believers to not fail to assemble themselves together. Christian fellowship is an important part of the practice of the Christian faith.

There are not "rules" as to how often, how many, and so forth.

  10. O.K., I'll bite, who is Marty McFly? :( You messin with me again? :(

Marty McFly was the character played by Michael J. Fox in the three Back to the Future Movies.

    Click for Spoiler:

He referrred to it probably because Maerty goes back in time, then forward in time, then way back in time....but in this series of movies it kind of made sense. Here in Enterprise...well.....

What in the heck was THAT?! is this Bragas revenge or something? cause I heard braga is leaving enterprise for another show and that ending could be his revenge for all the bad things we've said about him
According to our own chat transcripts from those who were leading the Save Enterprise effort, Braga fought hard for Enterprise.

  11. I gave it an 8.5 because of the ending. I just add myself to the chorus of people who were on the edge of their seat...until that ending! (Also there was a thunderstorm outside, and I was hoping all the way through that we would not loose power....fortunately no loss of power.)

    Click for Spoiler:

Well, I was wondering what that creature in the Nazi uniform was, and I guess it is a Reman. Why are the Nazi's in San Franciso? Yet another time episode? I am so disappointed that there is no relief for the crew yet...or for the viewer. I guess the ending I would have liked was for the Enterprise to return to earth orbit and find that Archer had been beamed off the weapon right before it exploded onto the Andorian ship. I know that is a predicatable ending...but it would have been a relief to all that action. Then end the season. And whatever kind of time cop Daniels is---HE SHOULD BE FIRED! Is there ever going to be a today, tomorrow, next day kind of chronology on this show or, is it going to continue to be this possible future, that possible past...what's real?! There needs to be some resolution to this temporal cold war! The action and the suspense for most of the program was off the charts, it was soooo good. The ending was a disappointment.

How did Archer end up prisoner of yet another alien species? Wait until September.........<_<

I'm open to different views of that ending. I'll be reading posts in hopes of dissipating my diasppointment.

The Reptillians as a species showed themselve to be less honorable then the other Xindi species.

  12. I voted for poor Travis. It was mostly a sympathy vote, because almost the only things he does on the show is navigate. He has demostrated his navigational abilities by how quickly he figures out how to "drive" alien vessels, like the insectoid ship. But he doesn't say much.....

  13. In junior high school (similar to middle school) we were taught how to write essays. Plus they made us practice writing essays in class timed. But this was back in the early 1970's, before many on this site were born.

  14. I am going to confess up front that I cannot follow all of the ship types. I'm not into ships or cars ( I drive a Chevy, and am fine with it). Having said all that it still seems that they have to crank up the ship-building. One every two years....what about airplanes now...are they built on an assembly line, or they only do that with cars? I know thay have to build in space, but cant they be more efficient cranking out the parts?

It would be nice if there was some information about the actual size of starfleet in those various star trek encyclopedias.

You have certainly given a lot of thought to this. Perhaps someone who knows about ship types will conribute to this discussion.

  15. But don't they also have some species in the Federation who do not breathe the same air as humans and those on the Enterprise? Those species would have to serve on their own ships. Didn't they have some species in TNG that wore something that pumped his own air in his nose? I don't think the Federation consists only of oxygen breathing species.

  16. I don't think that the Romulans are turning good...just that the relationship with the Federation is evolving. I think the relationship will continue to evolve slowly, because often the Romulans are deceitful. It is hard for the Federation to know for sure where they stand ( like with Ambassador Spock's attempts). The relationship with the Klingons developed more rapidly because they are straight forward...you pretty much know where you stand with them.

  17. I liked all of the main characters of the original series, and found all of them intersting in their own ways. I cannot think of a character I was not really annonyed with...just a few I was disappointed in. For example Diana Mildaur played a character who worked with beings, the Medusans, who were supposed to drive humanoids mad if they viewed them, and because she was jealous, she caused Spock to forget his protective visor when communicating with the medusan ambassador. Spock was driven insane temporarily, but eventually restored. I was disappointed in the behavior of this character. There are a few others.

  18. I've been walking almost everyday, even in thhe heat and humidity...it's hot at 9am right now! At the lake ( I know...not the back yard, but part of the walking trail in the development I live in) I saw mothers and babies the other day. I saw a mother duck and her brood, which swam away at break-neck speed when I approached. Baby ducks are fast swimmers! And I saw a mother turtle with a single baby turtle. They had come up for air...the mother spotted me and immediately dove under water...the baby lingered and stared, and then disappeared. I have also seen turtles walking in grassy patches. I have never seen turtles of this size "in the wild." But it has beeen raining here a lot lately. Squirrels are everywhere. Along the streets there are walking bridges across the lakes...I have seen swallows flying about the bridges, swallowtail butterflies ( very pretty) and fish in the shallow water. You see none of theses things when you are just driving by in the car. The only thing more plentiful than the squirrels are INSECTS! They grow big ones in the south!

  19. I had problems with stress when I was in graduate school that was so severe that there were physical manifestations--I won't say what.

I used to go to sleep, sometimes sleeping 12 hours. Not being awake kept me from being inthe pressure cooker. I would be awake to go to class, serve as a TA, study, and eat. The rest of the time I would sleep. I did this the first two years of graduate school ( 2nd attempt). Eventually I adjusted to the pressure, and the extra sleep was not necessary.

  20. - however the bureacracy of the school system and the lack of discipline keep scaring me off.  That and the sad fact that so many of your students can't read so you really wouldn't be able to teach much science.

Many of our best math ed students become disillusioned by these very things, and we see them back at school, retraining in computer science. They have incredible horror stories in only two to three years of work!

If I were going to throw caution to the wind, I would try my hand at writing fiction. But I need my health insurance.
