I wish them success. If finding and exploiting the commercial use of space spurs development then I am all for it. After the moon landings in the late 60's early 70's...no development of the moon! Nothing! Nada! If we have to wait for governments to develop the will to continue to develop space, or for the majority of our society to see the worth of developing space, then we will just have more of the same lack of action.
The only time our government gets motivated is when some other nation decides to do something.....
I want men and women to go back to the moon, and men and women to go to Mars...then to the stars!

TUH, you repeatedly find very interesting sites! Thanks for sharing that link!

MJ, if you spend time online and posting you have an "alibi" of where you were when.Funny, but I rarely get lonely living alone. I get lonely at holidays. I've gone to movies by myself for years (that way I get to choose the movie).
As for the homecooked meal thing - thing is if I were married I'd probably be expected to do the cooking.
so I'd lose either way.
And from what I've heard being married is no guarantee there will be someone there to care for and about you.
I don't go to movies often, but I go out to eat alone, and have done that for years without feeling strange. Like you, I am used to being alone and do not get lonely that often--but sometimes I do. Also I interact with so many people at work, that by the time I get home I need the solitude. I also do not live in fear.
I agree with what you say here, except I always go to see relatives over the holidays.

I liked the Excelsior with Sulu in command in Star Trek VI, but I was indifferent to it in Star Trek III. And Scottie sure did put it out of commission be remeoving a few screws!

We rented Star Trek III amd IV so Mom could see what happened to Mr. Spock. We actually watched Star Trek IV, The Voyage home, twice! She truly understands that Star Trek has good stories.
She still does not like "aliens." I have the DS9 pilot on tape, and after wacthing it, and finding it confusing, she pointed out that the Cardassians and Ferengi have too much make-up, her way of saying that she did not like them. So no DS9 for her.
Except we did watch "Far Beyond the Stars," which had no make-up. Mom was truly amazed that there was such a story in Star Trek. She was born in 1931, and both she and my father told us children they did not expect to have what they eventually attained in life. Their expectations were low. For example my father never dreamed of going to college, nor did anyone he knew. (But that chance did come to him.) During the show, I tried to point out to Mom the actors she had seen in make-up, but it was the story itself that impressed her.
She now respects my choice of Star Trek, rather than merely patiently forbearing her daughter's peculiar tastes.

Does the dvd seem to have extra scenes? My video of Star Trek 6 I dont think has when Spock mind melds with Valeris seeing the people that are behind the consipracy. It has other extra scenes, including some between Kirk and Spock after Valeris' part in the conspiracy is discovered.

Offspring, Darmok, Inner Light, Family, to name a few.....

He came during the two-parter "The Way of the Warrior." Sisko needed to know what the Klingon fleet, which had stopped at DS9 on its way somewhere, was up to, so Worf was sent to DS9 to find out. That is way to briefan explanation....there is a lot more to the story than that. I think it was the start of season 4 he arrived.

It's a Reman...the differences are "artistic licence"Or maybe it is just variety within the species. Swedes and Nigerians look very different, but are all a part of the human race.

I had been wondering about the change in your avatar, bysty. I recognized Samuel L. Jackson, one of my favorite actors.
One of the films I have not been brave enough to see him in is Pulp Ficiton.

No, not at all.

... the producers have set up this early conflict 1. Because it makes for better story telling BUT 2. Because we the audience will now be able to witness the evolution of the relationship towards the Peace we enjoy in future times. THAT imo is achieving the noblest Star Trek Theme. I look forward to seeing details of the process of conflict becoming peace.I agree with this perception...that the relationship was originally one of condescension, and had to develop into one of mutual respect. The problem of Vulcan arrogance has been hinted at in the other series, without that ever meaning they were considered "bad." Other species get annoyed with their logic, but also respect it (as was seen in Journey to Babel in TOS). One of the details I like is the fact that the different species had to get used to each others' "smell"....remember T'pol had to have help dealing with the way humans smelled to her? The relationships between the species had to grow over time.
Why would everyone expect the various species to become friends instantly and effortlessly? This approach is more honest.
As for the fact that TOS reflects the roles of women in the sixties, there were no women starship commanders in Star Fleet during the TOS era, and when one lady tried to take over from Kirk, it turned out she was mentally off. The Star Trek saga reflected the times, and grew with the times, some things for the better, like women commanders in Star Fleet, and some things for the worse (half-naked T'pol).

Benefits: Your significant other is not an axe murderer, because there is no significant other! ( Sorry..I just saw Vegas Homicide and the husband killed the wife with a baseball bat.)
Downside: No one to corraborate your alibi if you are accused of murder or some other serious crime. (Hmmm...too many murder mysteries on the brain...)

I don't know if this is really classic, but it comes from a '50's film. My favorite is the Blob....as presented in the Steve McQueen version of the movie.

I was surprised to see one of my favorites already mentioned, because I thought it was too old for many of you, and yet some of the younger folks mentioned it.
#1 The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming! (Every possible miscommunication that could occur in an emergency occurs here....)
Some others I have found funny are mentioned, like Galaxy Quest. I would also mention Foul Play with Goldie Hawn.
I'll have to think about others.
I really liked the movie "As Good as It Gets," but did not think of it as a funny movie.

No, I have not seen it, but plan to. I plan to rent it on video or dvd before the summer is out. I have seen the other two, and I also waited until video or dvd for each of those. What I find most compelling is watching how the simple, easy-going hobbit bear up under the horrendous burden of bearing the ring.

Probably one that goes back and forth between a kind smile and a yawn.What... doesn't the smilie have a basketball saying "Kentucky wildcats"?! ( I am orignally from Indiana, so remember many games between Hoosier and Kentucky high school basketball all stars.)

There was a movie about 15 to 20 years ago where aliens came to Earth and when they drank spoiled milk it made them drunk. Stores started selling it just like they would sell Wine or Beer. I forget the name of it, maybe someone will remember it. They also made a TV show out of it. The aliens were friendly for the most part and if I recall they were fleeing from someone that had enslaved them, if they came in contact with salt water (the ocean) they would be killed. It was like if we were to jump into a vat of acid.I think it was "Alien Nation." The men, women, and children were bald, and they had permission to live in certain parts of the US. There was a big group in the Los Angeles area, if I am remembering correctly. They had to deal with non-acceptance and prejudice. In the series, one of the aliens was a detective teamed up with a human detective. Too bad the series did not last.

I voted no.
I don't see how you could have a lot of good stories in the gamma quadrant. The Dominion control the entire gamma qaudrant....even though there are other races, they are all beholden to the Dominion. It would be a kind of "trying to escape from behind enemy lines" kind of thing, far more limited that the choices they had in the delta quadrant.
While the Delta quadrant had the Borg, the Borg did not control all of Delta quadrant, so Voyager had to contend with other powers, like the Vidians and the Kason (sp), and others.
I actually liked the ending of Voyager, and thought the two Janeway's defeating the Borg queen was one of the better uses of time travel.

Mine would be plump with one dimple, smiling, with a different hairstyle everytime it was used (I don't deliberately change my hairstyles in real life...it just comes out differently every day, as if I were destined to experience all possible permutations of the "bad hair day.") toting a math book and a Bible.

An expression of confidence in my mother's face. It was actually yesterday, I think. But she finally acknowledged that we (her children) were going to take care of her.
Since my father died a little more than a year ago, she has been worried about "being a burden." Actually my dad left her well-off financially. Those of her children who are able have since been making choices and decisions that include her, anticipating the day when she cannot be independent. We had gone with one of my brothers to see a house he was considering, and when he was talking about space, he mentioned that it is enough space for mother.
I moved to a larger place more accessible to my mother. Now my mother sees another child planning for her.
She finally sees that we don't see her as a burden, and that is a most beautiful thing to see!

Mine is the one when jadzia die'si cant think of the name of the episode, i always had a little crush on her
That was 'Tears of the Prophets' and that was sad at the end..I hated losing Jadzia like that. Seemed so meaniless..But I have to say that as a whole I believe 'The Visitor' was a much sadder episode..To see what Jake went thru as he aged.. And at the very end to see how he gave him and his father another chance at life together..
There is one profound remark I think Jake makes, that gives even more insight into his lifelong pain. He talks about the fact that when you lose someone you love, the wound eventually heals to the point where you can go on and make a life for yourself. But Jake's wound was constantly being reopened with repeated instances of losing his father throughout his life. He could not heal. He could not move on.

I think Sarek truly influenced the direction of the Federation as a quiet, unassuming way. He was a model of the Vulcan contribution....strength and logic.
