  1. Yes, I have. My best friend from my sophomore year of college. I've heard from her once since we said goodbye that last day of school (she wasn't able to return, and we both knew it at the time. One of my saddest memories is watching her walk away.). So the alumni association has no information. I remember she sent me a letter about her wedding a couple of years later. I remember his last name, but not his first. :D I've tried and tried, can't remember her father's name, can't find her old address (thinking it might be forwarded). I'm on the verge of using one of those $40-and-we'll-find-anyone sites...

  2. Ohmigosh, y'all are bringing back memories. Pufnstuf, Speed Racer - ooh, yeah! (Crush on Optimus Prime. I won't even mention I LOVED one of the characters on G.I. Joe, whose name I can't even remember now!)

My dad took away the antenna when we were kids, and we only got it back if we deserved it, but I still remember some...

Any of the Kroft shows. Seymour and the Sea Monsters, Space Nuts, especially The Bugaloos.

Actually, the shows I loved the most when I was little were reruns of Hogan's Heroes, the Monkees, and Get Smart. I had a crush on each of the Monkees at different times!

  3. I went with Sisko, and not just because I love DS9. I love it because of the characters in it, not the other way around. He's strong, forceful, makes good decisions (for the most part), with a very good idea (at least for most of the series) who he is and what he is there to do. He's sensitive, a good father, an excellent friend, and willing to do anything to save his people.

Kirk would be second, although TOS is still my favorite. Picard, third. Janeway fourth. Archer doesn't track, only 'cause I've seen only one episode. I love Scott Bakula, though!

  4. Because of the Norman invasion of England, English has many French words.

Because of Lafayette, American armies fought better during the American Revolution.

Because of France's military threats, England sent fewer troops to America during her revolution, helping the colonists break free.

We repaid our debt during the last two World Wars, at least. I'm not a French Fan, and never have been, but they went over the line this time. Treat them kindly, or treat them in kind...that's a tough decision.

  5. I had to be able to read it for my History of the English Language classes in college. AND translate modern documents into Middle English. It's fun - like figuring out a puzzle!

I think The Canterbury Tales are relevant to today. Drastically different people learning to get along, having to work together toward a common goal. The great age of storytelling. Learning it in Middle English - if you're in an Advanced Class or College, yes. Otherwise, it's an interesting side note, a language lesson, or something to do for extra credit.

    We are what we were.

  6. Ok, maybe I'm a little confused, but here we go --

Over and over in the series, it is mentioned that Bajor is only hours away from the station. (6, isn't it?). Now, let's think a minute here...

The wormhole is in a fixed area of space. The station is by the entrance, guarding it. Bajor is NOT fixed - it must orbit a star. In fact, they mention Bajor's sun several times, and it seems a considerable distance away. Where is Bajor in relationship to the station? There must be a perogee and apogee. The only solution I could think of was that the wormhole is actually above or below the solar plane, as is the station. Then you'd have a relatively clear shot at Bajor most of the time.

Ok, if I'm even more confused than I think I am, please let me know.

  7. I've been a Who-ser for several years. Love both US and UK versions.

Oh, yeah, the Robin Williams one :(

Actually, I have several favorite skits. The Village People Song Styles (where Laura messes up), the German Cabaret Song Styles, the UK ep where Ryan "has a shirt made by Sunkist." Those are the three I can think of at 5:40 in the morning.

  8. AUGH! My sister just returned Season 2! Season 3 is coming in the mail this week! And Two Towers is due out at the end of August - I'm going to spend the rest of the summer in front of the tv! Use up all my sick days to watch fantasy/scifi!

Oh, wait...I'm not that bad..... :(

  9. Disgusted? Puh-leeze! They need to understand a little more about the other sex. It's a little exaggerated, but I think it's hilarious! Do these women HAVE brothers and/or fathers?? Husbands? Boyfriends? Male acquaintances at ALL?

I was in the car the first time I heard this and almost drove off the road, I was laughing so hard.

  10. The Savage Curtain

Every time I see The Alternative Factor, it bothers me.

    Click for Spoiler:

Just the thought of the two Lazarus's fighting forever - always at each other's throat - even if one SHOULD win someday, he'll be alone forever; there's no way back. Gives me the creeps to this day.

  11. I think your question is - is the Federation Earth-centric? Well, Starfleet Headquarters on Earth. Earth is one of the head planets of the Federation. Earth was one of the founding planets of the Federation. Center has to be somewhere. You're correct that it's all relative, but I doubt Bajor will say their space is happening. Exciting, maybe.

Re: DS9 - Bajor is at the edge of Federation space. The Cardassian Union, the Romulan Empire, and the Orion Hegemony keep the Federation hemmed in some in other directions. Other peoples use the title of DS9 as a title - or maybe they're acknowledging, in a way, how long it would take them to get help from the Federation if something should happen. Maybe someday, they'll name it "Federation Gamma Quadrant Halfway Station" or something. But then everyone will have to change their station-ery!

As to Farpoint - We don't know WHAT they're far from. Never explains it!

  12. I just rewatched the episode about his wedding (sorry, can't remember the title), and he is referred to as "Chief" at least once. I remember thinking that it just sounded right, even though the setting was "wrong." B)

I knew the Ensign had something to do with him being a noncom. Is there ANY time a noncom can rise higher than that?

  13. May I recommend the new Broadway cast recording of 1776? There are some factual discrepencies, but the play is relatively accurate, and Brent Spiner sings a fantastic John Adams.

I am partial to this play/movie for several reasons, and I am very wary of "new" recordings. IMO, very seldom does a remake or sequel even begin to live up to the original. I bought this CD with fear and trembling, waiting to be disappointed.

    It still hasn't happened.

Now, I don't think it's better than the original, (or the movie soundtrack, which features most of the original cast), but this equals it. There are a few things about the original that are better than this recording. There are a few things about this recording that are better than the original. (I just wish they'd release the movie soundtrack on CD! Then I'd listen to all three...)

Listen to Mr. Spiner sing Is Anybody There? and hear John Adams' paraphrased words about what he thought would happen on the anniversary of the birth of the United States of America. (Even if the Fourth isn't the actual date. :) ) I still get goosebumps, and I've known every word for most of my life.

It's this CD that pushed me back into watching TNG again.

  14. When I was in college, we used to get freshly baked yeast rolls at Sunday dinner. Warm, and filled with the kitchen's homemade ice cream (true, true!), they were DELICIOUS! That, to this day, is my fave way to eat ice cream, but I don't cook with yeast often!
