  1. I forgot to mention that I have also read "Homecoming" and "The Farther Shore". Homecoming is set after Endgame and The Farther Shore is the sequel. These books were fantastic but I wait until you have seen Endgame before you read these books or you will be totally confused.

  2. My older brother came out with a classic when he was about ten. I can't remember this because he is five years older than me but my Mum told me about it. Here goes:

My brother was having breakfast one morning and after he poured the milk onto his Weetbix, he started trying to read some of the stuff printed on the milk carton. On one side of the carton it had written: Pasteurised and Homogonised. He sounded out the 'pasteurised' word but then he said:

"Mum, what does homogenocide mean?" He was trying to sound out homogonised but came out with 'homogenocide instead!! :(

Another time, when my sister was about seven or eight (she is six years older than me - again my Mum told me about this) an Aboriginal family came to visit (I live in Australia). They were friends of my grandfather's and he had met them while working up north in one of the Aboriginal communities up there. This family had two or three children and they needed to have a shower (I think they stayed the night). My sister saw them going into the shower and said to my grandfather:

"Poppa, are they going to have a shower to wash the black off?" :(

  3. Martha, a little girl a baby sit ( she is about 4 ), was playing in the back yard with her little friends ( 3 other kids) and they were all huddled in a corner  and every now and then I heard a "WOW" from the group...then they all walked up to me, martha in tow, and said " Purple ( nick name they gave me) look at what Martha found!!" Martha came up to me and held out her hands and as she did she said "ITS MAGIC CLAY! I can mold it into anything!" low and behold the child was playing with Cat poop!!! I didnt want to imbarass her so I asked if I could take the magic clay from her and asked her to come inside and wash her hands.. I then told her that she wasnt to play with any more Magic clay or the magic would go away and never come back ( what else could I say to her it was all I could do to keep from laughing at her) :borgqueen:

That was quick thinking!!! Its a good idea to be creative when talking to children about situations like the one you mentioned. I remember a similar situation (nothing to do with cat poop) but it reminded me of your story.

A few years ago, my Mum and I went to visit some friends on their yacht. Their son was four years old at the time. While my Mum was talking with his parents, their son, Matthew, asked me if I wanted to see some 'surprises' in his bedroom (which was actually at the end of the yacht, with two beds next to each other, he slept in one bed and his parents slept in the other one). He sat on his parents' bed and I sat next to him. There was a small shell next to the bed and Matthew started taking things off the shelf to show me. First of all, he showed me a few novels, a small packet of tissues and an old toothbrush. He said "These are all surprises. Do you want to see some more surprises?" I said "Okay" wondering what else he would pull off the shelf. Then he handed me a tube of something that I thought was toothpaste. After having a closer look at the writing on the tube, I soon discovered it wasn't toothpaste at all but something associated with two people sleeping together. I quickly put the tube back on the shelf but then he handed me a packet of condoms!! He said "These are all surprises" and I said with a completely straight face "Maybe we should put all these surprises back on the shelf".

I had to keep a straight face for the rest of the visit, even when Matthew said to his Mum "I was showing Linda lots of surprises in my room".

  4. I am reminded of when my son was about 4 years old.  We were in his pediatrician's office one day, awaiting our turn to be seen.  As we were waiting, a very obese lady came in with her child and walked up to the  registration window.....My son looked up at her then back at me and in a loud voice that ever one could hear he said...."Mom, that lady sure is fat!"........Highly embarrassed, I tried to quiet him, which only made matters worse.  "But she is fat," he said even louder.  The lady looked back at me and my son from the window.....I looked back at her, and could also hear others in the waiting room laughing.  I could only say  "I'm sorry" to her.....and my son looked back at me puzzled, as if to say "what did I do wrong, I only told the truth?" :(

I have a similar story that happened to my Mum's goddaughter.

My Mum's goddaughter, Leonie, was waiting in line at the bank with her son, John, who was about five years old at the time. There was another lady standing in front of them, who clearly had a problem with body odour. John said rather loudly: "Mum, that lady really stinks!!' Leonie told John not to talk quite so loudly and he said "But she does stink Mum". By this stage, the woman, who had obviously heard him, turned around with a very angry expression on her face. Leonie thought this woman was going to hit her. Needless to say, she did her banking as quick as she could that day!!

  5. This is a story about my actions when I was young I can only beleve they are true form the amount of people that delight in telling me.

I was about 4 or five when my  Great Grand farther pass away.

whilest at the wake every one was being very somber as I not knowing what was going on was running around and screaming and having a great time.  My mum grabbed my and said "You have to be a good boy and not make any noise" I said "why? and my mum said "because your grandad has died" To which I smiled and said in a rather loud voice "that ok then if he's dead he can't hear me, he won't mind"

Now that is just priceless!! I had a good laugh when I read your post. My Dad likes to embarress me with this story:

When I was about six years old, my parents took me and my older brother and sister on a long holiday around Australia. When we were in Queensland, we went on a scenic train ride (along with some other friends of my parents) that went through the rainforest, there were waterfalls along the way and lots of tunnels. Each time we went through a tunnel, I screamed because I had never been on a train before so I had never been through a tunnel. As I was only young at the time, I thought my fear was quite understandable. My Dad just thought it was amusing. Anyway, getting back to the funny part of the story, on the train, we were sitting opposite some people from Indonesia (or Malaysia, I'm not really sure). In my loudest voice possible I said:

"Dad, that man over there looks like a monkey!!"

Of course, everyone on the train heard me and my parents were absolutely mortified. I can't even remember saying it but how embarressment!!!

  6. I have worked in several child care centres over the last five years so I am constantly hearing children say funny things. The funniest thing I heard was not actually at work but something my nephew told me when he was about three years old.

I was babysitting my nephews one night, the younger boy had already gone to bed but the oldest one stayed up a bit longer. I can't remember what we were talking about but he just casually came out with this:

"Um, Aunty Linda, you've got bosoms like my Mum"

I couldn't keep a straight face and I burst out laughing. He laughed along with me. Later I told my sister (his mum) about what he said and she laughed too.

I remember another time when my Mum and I were at my sister's house, kicking a soccer ball around the back yard with my nephews (the same boys). My oldest nephew said quite seriously, "I'm going to be a fireman when I grow up. I'm going to live in the country with all the firetrucks"

My Mum and I looked at each other, trying to keep a straight face but we couldn't help it and had a good laugh.

The same nephew had trouble saying 'truck' when he was younger. He used to say 'fruck' instead.

Children do come out with some classic sayings. I have heard many priceless conversations between children too.

  7. There are four things that I want from Star Trek:

    1. A replicator - one that gives me an infinite amount of rations and that allows me to replicate ANYTHING I like so I never need to work again!!

    2. A transporter - I could go anywhere with one of these and it would also have a device that prevents ANY kind of transporter accident.

    3. A holodeck - this would be my ulitmate way of escaping from the real world.

    4. Star Fleet medical instruments - especially a medical tricorder and a hyprospray that could cure ANY medical condition.

  8. Hi there :(

I'm a Voyager newbie too, infact before I started watching Voyager, I had hardly seen any Star Trek at all. I'm now up to season three of DS9 and about half way through season one of TNG.

I would recommend watching Voyager from the beginning (the first episode is called Caretaker) to the end and in order. I would also recommend watching Endgame (which is the last episode of the series) last, otherwise you will be very confused.

    Some great Voyager novels include:

    Caretaker

Mosaic - this one is fantastic

    Pathways - another fantastic one

    The Nanotech War

    Section 31

I haven't read any other Voyager novels so far.

I would have to say, in my own opinion, that this site is the best Star Trek site on the net. I have been to the official Star Trek site but I found the entire page set up to be very confusing. The message boards were a bit off putting too.

  9. I would love to have dinner with Jadzia. She would be very interesting to talk to because she has so much knowledge from the other hosts. I would also like to have a meal with Garak - I loved the interaction between him and Julian. Janeway would also be another great person to have dinner with, providing she didn't burn the meal with her replicator!!

I wouldn't want to have dinner with Seven of Nine or Tuvok. I like to have a chat and a laugh over a meal and those two wouldn't be ideal candidates. Also, Seven wouldn't let me have salt or seasoning on my meal, she would say 'Salt is irrelevant' or 'This meal does not require further seasoning'. Julian would be very annoying, he just loves himself too much and thinks he is the 'master of everything'

  10. This is a tough one!! I can't choose between several Star Trek characters including:

    Captain Kathryn Janeway

    Jadzia Dax

    Kira Nerys

    B'Elanna Torres

    Seven of Nine

If I had choose just one character, it would definitely be Janeway. Jadzia came a close second because she is so wise, while still being relatively young (and she was just 'really cool') However, each of these characters, in my opinion, are strong in their own individual ways.

  11. Hi there

Boxing day is really cool because most people don't have to go to work that day. This year, Christmas day is on a Thursday and Boxing day is on a Friday so Aussies get a four day long weekend. I didn't actually know why we celebrated Boxing day until I read another post in this thread. That is a bit sad, as I was born in Australia and I have lived here all my life!! I was never interested in the history behind it, I was just glad that it was an extra day off.

  12. I can see the Doctor crawling around on the roof of his house, decorating it with Christmas lights and singing: Have yourself a merry little Christmas!! I think he would invite Seven of Nine over for Christmas dinner and later, they would have a sing along together - I can just see those two singing Jingle Bells or Walking in a Winter Wonderland.

    Linda

  13. My favorite character is definitely Captain Kathryn Janeway. I also like B'Elanna, Tom, Tuvok, Chakotay, The Doctor, Seven of Nine and Kes. I think there is already a thread about this floating around on this message board but I voted anyway.

  14. Hi there :(

The first science fiction show I remember watching was Dr. Who. It would come on at the same time each week night and my brother loved it. The music in the opening credits always scared me, so I made sure I wasn't in the room when that music was on. I enjoyed watching it, even though I was only six at the time and most of it probably went straight over my head :dude:

My brother also loved the Star Wars Trilogy (back when it was released for the first time) and my sister and I had to endure those movies countless times. I got so sick of it and I still don't like anything to do with Star Wars!

When I was older, I got into The X-Files and soon became an 'X-Phile'. Now I'm slowly becoming a Trekkie. It took me a bit longer to realise that Star Trek is such a fantastic show but now I'm hooked,

  15. tis ok Doc, i hope you stay here and post heaps!  you might remember me, im trekzone and i have made ~500 since you left, so theres some catching up to do!

    Hey Trekzone!!

I read somewhere that you live in Australia. I live in Perth, Western Australia. Where do you live??

Its great to see a few other Aussies here. I just noticed that you joined in August this year and you have made more posts than me. I have some catching up to do because I joined in July and I'm only a Leiutenant Commander!

Anyway, I hope to see you around!

    Linda

  16. Hi there :dude:

That was interesting. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving Day in here in Australia. Wow, only one month until Christmas!! This year has gone by so quickly. What is the weather like where you live?? Its supposed to be summer here now but its still quite cool. It should start getting warmer here soon, Christmas day is usually very hot (close to 40 degrees C or over 100 degrees F)

Well I'm going to watch some more episodes of DS9. I never thought I would say this but I LOVE Deep Space Nine!!!

    Linda

  17. AUSTRALIA YAY!!!!

AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE, OI, OI, OI!!!!!!

Wow!!! What a great list of countries. Good to see Australia was fourth, it should have been before New Zealand though  :dude:

    Linda

When I wrote the list up initially I had to use the access logs and I just put them in the order from there, which was in order by the total amount of accesses. At that time there were more logons from New Zealand then Australia. All others now get added in orger of when I see them sign on.

Oops!! Australia is actually number six on the list and New Zealand is number five. I thought there would be more posters from Oz than NZ. Anyway, its great to see that so many countries are watching Star Trek and enjoying it!!

  18. My family complains that I basically always wear the same thing and that when ever I have to buy some new clothes they are the same thing (so I’m in and out of the mall pretty quick)

And then there's me. :dude: I'm a slave to fashion, I admit it. Ever since I was 12 my sister has had the joke that I spend so much time in the mall the mannequins wave to me as I go by. :(

    :( :( lol!

I never really care much. I just throw on whatever's comfortable (one of those boring "jeans and a t-shirt" girls - that's me :()

Thats me too. I love wearing over sized t-shirts with jeans. I like to feel comfortable. Why do so many girls insist on wearing tight t-shirts that are two sizes too small these days?? I don't like those hipster jeans much either, I tried some on once and I thought they were going to fall off. The thing is though, nearly all jeans are hipster types so I have to go hunting around for jeans with a normal waistline.

Shoes are another thing I hate wearing. As a child, I refused to wear shoes at home, even though my parents owned a large property. I was always stepping on prickles and burinng my feet on the hot ground. I wear shoes a bit more often now, infact, the only place I don't wear shoes is at home.

    Linda

  19. I know what you mean (as I sit here wearing a ratty pair of sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt) :dude:

Yeah, I get what you mean...I am sitting here in sweatpants and a baithing suit. And let's not discuss what my hair looks like now!

My family complains that I basically always wear the same thing and that when ever I have to buy some new clothes they are the same thing (so I’m in and out of the mall pretty quick)

    Master Q

    StarTrek_Master_Q@yahoo.com

That sounds like me too. When I buy clothes, I do it quickly. Most of the time, I don't even try the clothes on and surprisingly, I always get the size right too. I have been told by lots of people that I should wear skirts more often. I HATE wearing skirts and dresses.

I wear the same thing most of the time aswell. Even when I go out. I won't even bother explaining why I'm still sitting at my computer in my pyjamas, when its almost midday!!!

    Linda

  20. Hi there

If I ever have children, I would consider naming them after characters in Star Trek. I think its perfectly okay to name children after heros and tv characters. In my opinion, people have every right to be able to name their children whatever they like. I love unusual names, which is why the names Kes and Jadzia appeal to me so much. I even like B'Elanna although I'm not sure if I would give that name to a child. Miral, on the other hand, is another unique name. It sounds aesthetically pleasing (if something can 'sound' that way). I guess I'm trying to say it sounds nice, without using the word 'nice'. Deanna is another great name. I wouldn't want my children to share a name with other kids at school.

As for names such as Quark, Rom, Nog, Spock, Neelix, Chakotay, Worf, Seven of Nine and Odo they are just too weird. I would only use those names for pets. As much as I love unusual names, I have to draw the line somewhere..........

    Linda

  21. I loved Julian's tight outfit he wore when he played racket ball  I'm glad O'Brien didn't wear the same outfit!!

Some outfits were just a bit too tight, like Seven of Nine's catsuit. It left nothing to the imagination. I liked Deanna's catsuits better. Tom Paris looked kind of cute in his outfits, especially in Fair Haven. Remember when Janeway, Chakotay, Paris and Tuvok went to 20th century Earth in Future's End - Tuvok wore a hat to cover up his Vulcan ears. When they first arrived on Earth, Tuvok looked around at the clothes other people were wearing and said "We could have just worn our Starfleet uniforms"

Most of the fashion in Star Trek is sort of daggy, especially considering its the 24th century. What is up with the tight lycra suits?? Some of the kids had strange clothes too but I always liked Naomi's outfits (in Voyager).

    Linda
