  1. As I am sure everyone knows, NASA named one of the first shuttles Enterprise.  Not because they liked the aircraft carrier, but because of Star Trek.

I'm pretty sure the words Warp Speed would not be part of our lexicon without Star Trek.

We could go on and on, couldn't we?

NASA also had a probe called Voyager in the 1970s. I wonder if ST: Voyager was named after the Voyager probes?? Star Trek is also mentioned in The X-Files a few times. In 'Dreamland' (a two parter) they show an old family movie of Mulder when he was a kid, running around the loungeroom dressed up as Spock. He had Vulcan ears on and they kept falling off. In the same two parter, Scully tells Mulder that they were looking for 'just another crack pot who watches too much Star Trek'. Warp speed is also mentioned in this episode.

Paris, Torres and Durst find themselves prisioners of the Vidians. The head surgeon/scientist Sulan has extracted B'Elanna's Klingon DNA in order to produce a pure Klingon for his tests. He believes that a pure Klingon can help him find a cure for the deadly Phage disease. In their cell, Paris and Durst are stunned when another prisioner is brought in. It's an all-human version of Torres - the other "half" of Torres that was left after Sulan removed the Klingon genetic material. She explains to Paris what has happened to her and is very weak. The guards return and forcibly remove Durst from the cell. Although Paris tries unsuccessfully to help his friend, all the human Torres can do is cringe in fear. The Klingon Torres is horrified when she sees Durst's face on the surgeon Sulan. He has killed the Lieutenant. It so angers Torres that she breaks her bonds, attacks Sulan and escapes..The human Torres ends up in the cell by herself because she is too weak for a labor detail. The Klingon Torres finds her and helps her escape. In return the human Torres comes up with a plan to de-activate the shields. Chakotay disguised as a Vidian finds Paris and rejoins the two Torreses. The Klingon Torres takes a phaser shot from Sulan just proir to beaming up to Voyager. She dies on the transporter platform but the Doctor is able to use her Klingon DNA to restore Torres to her original self.

    Show Notes :

Neelix fixes Plomeek Soup for Tuvok since Neelix believes that the crew deserves a little taste of home now and then, Neelix spices up the soup since it seems so bland to him.

Neelix makes peanut butter and jelly sanwiches for Paris. Tom calls it 'comfort food'.

    Show Quotes:

Paris: Fear can be a good thing. It keeps you from taking unnecessary chances.

Torres: That's the way you respond to every situation, isn't it? If it doesn't work, hit it. If it's in your way knock it down. No wonder I got kicked out of the Academy.

Klingon Torres: Maybe we'll die in the attempt, but that's better than sitting here like frightened Tika cats.

Torres: I guess I'll just have to accept the fact that I'll spend the rest of my life fighting with her.

    014.jpg

I really liked this episode and I found it interesting to see two sides of B'Elanna. It was rather strange to see B'Elanna without her Klingon makeup. I think Roxann Dawson did such a fantastic portrayal of Torres and especially in this episode, as she played the 'human' side of B'Elanna and the full blooded Klingon side of her aswell.

Unfortunately, I have only watched this episode a few times, even though I do own the episode on tape. I will definitely be watching this episode again soon.

  3. You know those little things in life that we all experience but can't explain? Those things you think about when you're at work and of course you're not thinking about work, I'll give you an example to kick things off.

As I said above I was looking at my keychain and I realized I have a bazillion keys on that thing and I only know what 4 of them go to. Where are all these extra keys coming from? Yes I could just get rid of the useless ones but what if someday I happen across a locked door and one of the discarded keys would have opened it? I'd just kick myself if that happened. The only explaination for all these keys that I can come up with is that they a.  seem to breed like tribbles or b.  magical locksmith gnomes sneak into my house when I'm asleep and add new keys to my keychain.

That's it, please share your experiences with the Mundane Mysteries of the Universe, and don't think about this to hard, I don't want anyone dying from an aneurysm.

A pineapple doesn't contain pine or apples so why does it have that name??

Why is the word abbreviation so long??

Why is it that when we are in a hurry to drive somewhere, we get stuck at every single red light??

A chocolate wheel isn't made of chocolate so how did it get its name??

If an orange is called an orange, why isn't a lemon called a yellow - sorry, that one was lame, I'm tired!

A silverfish isn't silver, nor is it a type of fish and it doesn't live in water so what is up with that??

A butterfly isn't made out of butter so why is it called this??

  4. I thought this might be an interesting poll to see how many of us work and how many of us are students. And it'll give us an opportunity to talk about our jobs and /or schools..

As for me. I've worked in electronic companies for 27 years. Been on the current job for 8 years. I work in a Robotics Comapny in Massachussets. As cool as that sounds I actually don't get to work on the robots. Only on the Power Supplies and Controllers for those Robotic systems..As is the norm for electronics companies I have been thru several layoffs and cutbacks there. Right now I am in a busy period there. Sometimes you may see me here thru the day. That is when I'm at work. I usually come to this site on my breaks and when I'm bored with nothing to do..

    What about you all ??

I have to work beecause I'm not independently wealthy and I'm not married. I also need to pay my rent and the bills so working for me is essential.

I have been working in child care centres for the last six years or so. I started out as an assistant and now I'm qualified, which means I'm in charge of a room of children. I'm currently working with children aged 0-2 years and I have two assistants that are fantastic. I wasn't too sure about working with babies at first, as I have never worked with this age group before but I'm really enjoying it so far. Previously, I worked with toddlers (2-3 year olds) and children aged 3-5 years, plus school aged kids.

Although I do love my job, I dream about the day when I win enough money in the lottery, so I never have to work again!!

  5. If Captain Janeway were teaching a course at Starfleet academy what advice do you think she would give her students about life and survival in the Delta Quadrant, in terms of future explorations?..................I will put in my thoughts later.

    I think Janeway would say:

"If you get stuck in the Delta Quadrant, make sure you study wormholes extensively, so you can find your way back to the Alpha Quadrant"

"Whatever anyone else tells you, always be optomistic because eventually, you WILL find your way back to Earth"

"Travelling through time only gave me a headache"

"Coffee is the finest organic suspension ever devised - just remember that I always have it black!"

"Try to avoid the Borg but if you really have to confront them, make sure you drink lots of coffee first!!"

"Its not a good idea to form an alliance with the Borg - they will only try to assimilate you"

  6. I agree with you guys.

At the beginning, youth and all make him enthousiastic and all.

But it's hard to always have to hide a potential you have... The truth freed him, and that was just great. That bring him a new confidance too. Like he was suddently passing from a young man to a man.

And Bashir and O'brien.. that's a classic in my book :-)

I agree with you entirely about Julian and O'Brien's friendship - its a classic in my book too. I found it quite interesting that O'Brien really couldn't stand Julian at first but then he grew to like him and they became great friends. Even though these characters were quite dissimilar, personality wise, their relationship was very realistic. I loved those episodes when Julian and O'Brien went to fight some battle in the holosuite. I'm sure the two men were both in their element while 'playing' in the holosuite!!

  7. After Julian Bashir came out about being genetically enhanced and admitting that he could do loads of stuff he had kept hidden he became a far better character in my book. It was funny how Miles O'Brien took the piss out of him for being super smart. He developed as a character and was less weak and pitiful. Watching re-runs, you look at him differently as if to say ' i know your secret'. Before you knew, he had little to distinguish him. Kira had the whole 'boo hoo Bajoran thing' goin on. Odo could turn himself into a cocoanut. Sisko was the big black boss man. Garak the Cardassian. Dax the, well you know the rest lol But Bashir was a bit crap to begin with. Just some sissy doctor... then he's like, Khan 2.

I thought Julian's character was a bit annoying at first but he grew on me after season one. He was naive to begin with, as he had come straight out of medical school and he lacked experience. However, he was a brilliant doctor, even before we found out that had been genetically enhanced.

I found that after watching the episode 'Doctor Bashir, I Presume?" Julian had sort of 'come out' in a way and he was able to display his genetic enhancement without anyone being suspicious. It was also great that Miles accepted him for who he was, as a person and not what he had become (by being genetically enhanced).

Why is it when you really need to find a particular item, it can't be found anywhere but then you find it later when you are looking for something else??

Also, why do some items mysteriously disappear for days, week or even months (or even years) and then miraculously reappear in the exact same spot where you thought you left them??

Why do we put things in a 'safe spot' so we can remember where they are and then forget where that 'safe spot' is??

I think there is a parallel universe where these things go when we can't find them. They go to this parallel universe for a while and then reappear unexpectedly.

I think all dryers are all interconnected and that is why we always find odd socks in there, when we get the dry clothes out. The socks that have gone missing are probably in somebody elses dryer and that is also why we sometimes find the 'odd socks' that have previously gone missing.

  9. A lot of Trek actors do narration and voice-overs for commercials.  I've noticed they all have very distinctive voices and are easily recognizable.  Who's your favorite based only on the sound of their voice?

If I've forgotten your favorite, feel free to list them.  I've only listed major characters, you can mention  minor ones as well.

I think mine is probably Michael Dorn.  I especially enjoyed his line "Captain, I must protest.  I am not a merry man."

Although Kate Mulgrew is my all time favorite actor and her voice is amazing, I actually voted for Avery Brooks. His voice has a hypnotic distinctiveness about it and I could listen to it all day. I will never get sick of that smooth, free flowing sound of his incredible voice.

  10. Changed them for many years when my children were babies.  Once you get over the fear of the dudu, it's no big deal.

I agree, its no big deal changing diapers (we call them nappies here in Australia). I have worked in child care for more than five years so it second nature to me now. I also have two nephews, who are now 5 and 7 but I babysat them lots when they were babies.

  11. Here in Aus , we don't get season 1 until 6th May, season 2 not till july  :wow:  :o

I'm glad the voyager ones will be cheaper though

    Prices here, in aussie dollars:

    TNG - $189

    DS9 - $212  !?!?!?!?!

    VOY - $145

I just bought season 5 of DS9 a few months ago and I paid around $180.00 and about $165.00 for season 2. I think the average cost of each season of DS9 is around 189.95 but I got mine on special. Its a good idea to wait until Target has a sale on and then most DVDs (including box sets are much cheaper). I got seven seasons of The X-Files for $89.95 each because I waited until they were on sale (of course, I didn't buy all seven seasons at the same time). If this is anything to go by, Trek DVD box sets may be cheaper one day.

  12. She said Rene was great but Kate was absolutely fantastic.

Agreed. Although Voyager is not my favourite Trek I must admit that she was a great entertainer on stage.

I haven't been to any Trek conventions or had any Trek encounters myself. I would love to see Kate Mulgrew on stage too, my flatmate said that time stood still for the whole time she was up there!! I'm a bit jealous!

  13. I miss seeing her as Janeway she was  a good Female Captian that I looked up to on star trek does anyone know what happened to her  cause I'd love to know if she is still acting in movies or tv or in plays and things like that. She is one who young Girls who like Science can really look up to Captian janeway was the best always with her crew I have to signed Pictures of her when she was on Voyager that I sent for  I still have them and will keep them forever .

    Samantha Carter

Kate Mulgrew has been starring in her one person play 'Tea at Five' for the last year or so. I don't think she has done any new movies or starred in any new tv shows since Voyager - apart from Star Trek: Nemesis.

  14. Colm Meaney did such a fantastic job in this episode and I think it was one of his best episodes. I really like the character of O'Brien because he is just an ordinary guy and this makes him the perfect person to place in an extremely challenging situation. I really felt sorry for Miles during this episode because his memories of that prison cell would be with him for the rest of his life. He would have to learn to deal with these memories because they wouldn't just fade away after a certain period of time.

    Madam Captain out!!

  15. Hard Time is such a fantastic episode and definitely one of my favorites. For me, it holds lots of symbolism and it relays a few contraversial issues. Miles believed that he had been held in that prison for twenty years, when in reality, it was only for a few hours. Everyone on the station tried to help him. However, they just couldn't reach him. They tried to understand what Miles 'believed' he had been through but they really had no idea. Even though they all knew that Miles had only experienced the prison for a few hours, he 'had' been there for much longer.

It also brings up the issue of mental health while being solitary confined for so long. Miles had been alone in that cell for so long that he conjured up another person that was just a figment of his own imagination. However, to Miles, Ee'char was 'real' and he helped him to cope with prison life. On the other hand, Ee'char was another 'part' of Miles coming to the surface in times of great hardship. I like to think that Ee'char was Miles' inner self. I found it interesting that Ee'char was an alien, when in fact, he really 'was' Miles.

  16. The movie was great.  Just to see Robin act in this manner was refreshing.  He is certainly very talented.  The use of white, beige and minimal sets emphasised the emptiness of the character's life (Robin). I agree the film made my skin crawl.

I agree, it was refreshing to see Robin Williams in a completely different role. While he is great in comedic films, he is very talented and capable of playing serious roles aswell (as we have seen in One Hour Photo). His apartment also showed how empty his life was because it was sparsely furnished and quite small. I only hope that Robin gets to play more serious characters in the future.

  17. I have never been to a convention or met any Trek actors. My flatmate has been to a few conventions, two in Perth, Western Australia and one in Melbourne. She saw Rene Auberjonois at one and Ethan Phillips at another one (although it was meant to be Robert Picardo but he couldn't make it at the last minute so Ethan attended instead). She saw Kate Mulgrew and Rene Auberjonois at the Melbourne convention. She said Rene was great but Kate was absolutely fantastic. Kate Mulgrew also attended a convention in Sydney, Australia and I read a com report written by a woman who went to see her. This particular woman went with another friend and they got autographs and even went to the cocktail party afterwards. They were waiting for Kate to arrive at the cocktail party for about ten minutes and then realised she was already there, talking to someone behind them!!

I started a thread similar to this one a few months ago but mine was titled "Would you let the EMH treat you??

I think I would choose Julian to treat me, if I had to choose between any Star Trek doctor. He has extensive medical knowledge and he is such a genius when it comes to treating unexplained illnesses. He is also really cute!!

  19. When Odo said something like, " Well at least I sleep in my bucket"

I have already started a thread about favorite DS9 quotes. If you look at the most recent threads, you will find one titled "What are your favorite DS9 quotes?" I don't see any point in starting up a thread about quotes when there is already one going. There is also a thread about favorite Odo quotes too.

  20. I also love DS9, I think the show never gets enough respect. I like it almost as much as TNG and TOS.

DS9 is just as good as Voyager. Its probably also up there with TOS and TNG, although I haven't seen much of those series yet. I didn't like DS9 when I first started watching it but it grew on me and now I can't get enough!!! I think it would be safe to say that I'm addicted to DS9 because I love it so much.

  22. I have many favorite quotes from Star Trek and its so hard to pick just one. Here are a few of my favorites:

The EMH (to Naomi):Try to hold still please.

Naomi: Is it going to hurt?

EMH: Of course not, a few photons never hurt anybody.

Naomi: We didn't do this last year.

    Janeway to Naomi:

"There are three things to know about being a starship Captain. Keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship and never abandon a member of your crew"

(From the Voyager episode 'Dark Frontier')

    Garak (to Julian):

My dear doctor, must we always play this game. I'm no more a spy than you are a...............

    Julian: A doctor.

(From the DS9 episode 'Body Parts")

O'Brien (to Garak):So what did Captain Sisko do to persuade you to come along?

Garak: How do you know I didn't volunteer?

O'Brien: (laughing) He threatened you, didn't he.

Garak: Nothing so coarse. The Captain bribed me. He offered to help me percure a larger space for my workshop. The latest dress making equipment is surprisingly bulky.

O'Brien: Well, whatever he did, I'm glad you're here.

    Garak looks at O'Brien suspiciously.

    O'Brien: Whats the matter?

Garak: Well its just that lately I've noticed that everyone seems to trust me. Its quite unnerving, I'm still trying to get used to it. Next thing I know, people are going to be inviting me to their homes for dinner.

O'Brien: Well if it makes you feel any better I promise I will never have you over.

    Garak: I appreciate that Chief

    O'Brien: Nah, don't mention it.

(From the DS9 episode 'Empok Nor')

I have more but I can't think of them right now.

  23. In the episodes Past Tense and Past Tense II, when Sisko, Jadzia and Julian travel back in time accidently and end up on Earth sometime in early 2000's. Sisko changes the timeline and so he has to pretend to be Gabriel Bell in order to restore the timeline. His picture is printed in the history books. Then in Little Green Men, when Rom, Quark and Nog are going to Earth, Nog is reading about Earth history and he makes a comment to Quark that 'This Gabriel Bell human looks a lot like Captain Sisko'
