  1. This made me feel better about season 3.  At least Scott seems to be aware of the problems a relationship between Archer and T'Pol would cause, so mabe TPTB are, too.

But ya gotta wonder, how would the green makeup not get smeared everywhere?

    --------------------

"Lipstick? there's no lipstick on me."

"She wan't kissing your face my love."

    The Matrix Reloaded

This should cheer you up even more:

    UPN news release

The voice - over remark was made by a reporter with nothing better to do. I like Jolene's remarks.

  2. I think there are situations where PC has gone too far.  Take, for example, my personal situation.  I am tall and very thin.  Almost every person I meet says something like:  "Oh my GOD!!!  You're so SKINNY!! Don't you ever EAT???"  Now, what if the situation were reversed?  What if I were introduced to someone who was overweight and said:  "Oh my GOD!!  You're so FAT!!  Don't you ever stop EATING??"  What do you think people would think of me?

I knew someone who had developed a food allergy - she lost lots of weight and was terribly sick. She said guys would say to her "gee you look great". I read of another similar situation - this woman almost died and people were complimenting her. I try to remember that when I see really thin people. Now, I do get really ticked when thin people complain about their weight in front of me.

  3. With any tv show, the writers have a tendency to goof once in a while.  Get over it.

"Get over it" ? CJLP, I think that goes beyond expressing a difference of opinion. As for making goofs - yes everyone does; but if I made a goof like that at work I'd be called on the carpet so why shouldn't these people who make an incredible amount of money be held responsible for their errors. As moulinrouge points out - the difference in Trip's bio can be explained by the family moving. But I don't know how to explain Mayweather's statement in Fortunate Son that he left a sister and brother in law on the Horizon. And then on Horizon all of a sudden it's a brother not a sister and no other siblings.

  4. Maybe in a few years they'll have worked out that voice activated software.

I use the mouse for surfing - but when I'm working - and I am on a roll it is cumbersome to stop and reach for the mouse to move to a new screen and I find too many programs are mouse dependent.

A lot of people get carpal tunnel syndrome from the keyboard but I get an inflammed shoulder when I have to use the mouse too much - expecially if I have to work without a keyboard tray under the desk that holds the mouse.

  5. I'm voting for Shinzon even though he is not on the list.  As RikerChick so eloquently put it...he is totally drool worthy.

I finally saw Nemesis - Shinzon was an intriguing character. It's funny how he could be the "bad guy" and be so appealing. However, all ST characters are going to have to take a back seat...just heard Mark Harmon is coming back to television next season. OMG, the ultimate drool-worthy.

  6. Of the choices listed I chose books - all it takes is one textbook...dang. However, my biggest entertainment expense this last year was the computer, software, peripherals package - and I still have add-ons on my wish list - so it'll be a biggy this year too.

  7. the only problem i see is people that arent deserving of a job getting it anyway.

And that will be the same problem after you eliminate affirmative action. It will just be different people being unfairly hired. I don't want to be argumentative either because I do believe that affirmative action has some serious flaws. However, I am surprised that you are not aware of how big a problem existed before and still exists (because some companies ride under the radar). If companies were not required to hire women and minorities -they wouldn't - it's that simple.

Your example of the 100 applicants misstates affirmative action. Part of the formula is who else is already on the team. If a representative number of women are already employed preference doesn't need to be given to the female employee. If however, the company has a long history of hiring only men - qualified or not - then the lesser qualified woman may get hired. If the company had hired qualified women in the past when they had applied they wouldn't be in a situation of needing to hire a female now. Is the discrimination against male co-applicants any more her fault than it is that of the twenty or so lesser-qualified men already employed?

Sexual harassment and date rape are separate issues.

  8. Can anyone define intelligence for purposes of answering this question. I mean really, IQ tests measure spational and analytical abilities but the theory of multiple intelligences says intelligence includes more such as creativity and musical ability.

My personal experience has been that Star Trek fans tend to be better educated (formal or self); a lot of scientists that I have known watch Star Trek.

Back in my college days (around the dawn of time) we learned that higher levels of education were generally associated with less prejudice and more acceptance which also goes with the Star Trek theme of a better world.

I'm sure I've posted this before but the words of Neve Campbell's character to Tom Paris pretty much sum it up..."you're different, you care about something other than your own little life" If Star Trek inspires people to live that way then it is more than a tv show.

However, we need to remember Gene Roddenberry did not create the humanist vision that Star Trek projects; he created a vehicle to exhibit those pre-existing ideals. Nor does the desire to end war, suffering and inequity belong only to the humanist philosophy. Many other philosophies, religions and social reformers have sought and do seek the same thing.

IMO, and this is one of those...this is my opinion things .. .while I love Star Trek and recognize its noble ideals...it doesn't command my true respect. I know and have known many people who truly live beyond themselves. I've known people that put in countless hours serving environmental groups to try and make the world a healthier place. I've known people that take meals to sick and lonely people, that give rides to the elderly, that take in abandoned children...and the list goes on. Those are the people I truly respect. The truth is...if I was even half of what the Star Trek ideal is I would be out there doing more to reach beyond my own little life.

  9. I fast forward through all scenes with Hoshi (even the ones with Trip) so the less they show her the better.

    Click for Spoiler:

Hoshi's gonna be featured heavilly next season, sorry! :)

They're planning to develop her character - less whine and show her more than they did this season but that is not the same as featured heavily. It's pretty common knowledge that Trip is the favorite of Enterprise fans and they won't be hiding him away.

  10. As Troi would say - I sense some anger here.  But even more I sense people dodging my question.  No one has made a serious attempt to answer it.  A simple statement that hiring should be based on qualifications is a dodge.  The issue is how do you enforce that?  Claiming discrimination is illegal is a dodge. It may be illegal but unless you have absolute proof and money to hire an attorney being in the right is of little consequence.

So, again I ask - what is a workable solution?  Can anyone say they honestly believe that if affirmative action was abolished that hiring would be based solely on qualifications?  If you do, boy do I have some land to sell you.

yes i do beleive that, at least a lot more so than now. the local fire dept a few years back, i not sure how long now, had a female applicant, before she took the test, before anything, the press, the cheif, the everybody, had her hired right off the bat. low and behold, she didnt pass. yeah she may not of got the job, but the FACT is she would've even if she was on the bottom of the list, NOW THATS WRONG, AND A BOATLOAD OF CRAP. i want to hear how you think its a fair system now, i dont hear that from you. thats a simple question.

I never said I thought that was fair. I clearly stated that affirmative action does create problems. My point was that no one has a better idea. Affirmative action is an imperfect solution to a serious problem. If you eliminate the imperfect solution the serious problem still remains.

So again I ask, if you eliminate affirmative action - how do you plan to prevent discrimination in hiring & promotions? If affirmative action is eliminated without addressing this issue we're going to have a real mess.

  11. Yay, I got rid of the lizard. I coaxed it into a jar and tossed it (the lizard) outside. Now, we are both happy. Unfortunately, they were discussing at work that there were alligators in the pond. When I was in Tallahassee this lady went out to get in her car and there was a gator underneath. That's all I need is to go out to my car and step on a gator

  13. Okay in Fusion, Trip told a great story about a dance at Bayside Elementary School (which he attended) in Panama City. He also mentioned his brother.

Panama City is not in South Florida - it's in the panhandle. I hope Trip has a large family. Because he better still have that brother - and somebody is living in Ireland ) because it was his nephew's class that sent the pictures to Enterprise.

I mean they already melded Mayweather's sister and brother-in-law into a single character, his brother. See Fortunate Son and Horizon - Are these writers even awake.

  14. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.  Yes, season 2 did have some strong points.  But I think the bad points out wieghed the good.  Here is my rant about what I think is wrong with season two:

    Click for Spoiler:

    • Several episode have been copies of the old episode.  Vanishing Point is a copy of Barcley's TNG episode.  Judgement Day, which did have strong points, is a copy of The Undiscovered Country.  The Crossing was a copy of I don't know how many episodes from all series.  First Flight was okay but it was a copy (or homage, take your pick) of The Right Stuff.

    • A Night in Sickbay could have been great.  It was extremely disappointing.

    • Minefield had plot holes left, right and center.  There were enough for a thread.

    • Trip is a good character but is my least favourite character.  He had way too much air time.  Plus that thing in the season finale shows that he ain't goin' any where any time soon.

    • Hoshi's one episode (Vanishing Point) was bad.  Mayweather's one episode was good.  Phlox had a good episode last season but his episode this season (A Night In Sickbay) was exremely disappointing.  My point is that my four favourite characters didn't recieve enough air time.

    • Regeneration was just grrrrrrrrrr.  I was throwing stuff at the tv until it stopped.  No joke.

    • The second half of the season was annoying.  It was a string of episodes that either bad, copies, or featured my least favourite character.

Please don't get the impression that I think all of season 2 was bad.  It just had many, many weaknesses.  My solution to this is simple.  HIRE NEW WRITERS!!!

Funny, I was thinking Trip didn't have enough airtime - and they spent way too much time pushing the catsuit babe. I fast forward through all scenes with Hoshi (even the ones with Trip) so the less they show her the better. I like Mayweather but he needs acting lessons and I thought "The Breach" and "Stigma" gave Dr. Phlox some needed airtime. And his performance in "Bounty" was that pitiful episode's redeeming moment - the only other bright spot was Trip and Malcolm on the bridge.

  15. I'm from the south,I was born in Virginia and grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, lived most of my adult life in North Carolina.I live in Arizona now but this tuesday I'm moving back to the southland down to Florida.

Living in the south I didn't hear any kind of accent, but them yankees from up north sure do talk funny! :martok:

I don't know where you're going in Florida - when I lived in Tallahasse I met a girl from Miami - I asked it she was from New York (she said she'd never been out of the state of Florida but people were always asking her that). Apparently that accent is rather common in Miami. I also heard a lot of New Yorkers when I was working in Jacksonville - so be prepared. BTW, do you think Westerners have accents - I lived in the West for several years and when I came home someone told me I talked like a Westerner.

  16. CJLP, I would not presume to speculate why our government would do anything. Although I am inclined to believe Roswell had something to do with spy technology and the cold war. However, the USAF did operate a UFO investigation after that - which is probably why it has gotten so much attention.

I have read of some "sightings" that had very valid explanations. Or they seemed valid - it would take master-q or xeroc to critically read them - but the part I understood was interesting. It was also fascinating to see how they managed to prove some photos were faked.

As for actual alien abductions - I am still a non-believer. I did hear a very valid explanation for this phenomena which has to do with sleep paralysis. But there are still some unexplained details waiting for clarification.

  17. I find Affirmative Action to be extremely irritating.  Someone should be hired based on their skills, not becuase they are a minority

The opposite is also true - a person should be hired on the basis of their skills - not because they belong to the majority. I think most of us in the work world have seen that happen.

Without affirmative action many well-deserving applicants would not have a chance. On the other hand affirmative action does do harm in addition to the good. Yes, sometimes less qualified people are hired to fill the quota. This creates resentment and, unfortunately, it burdens many deserving employees with the stereotype that they were just hired for a quota.

Everyone's gung ho to get rid of affirmative action to eliminate the problems it causes but if you do eliminate it what do you propose to do to ensure that people do get a fair chance based on their skills? I've yet to see anyone offer a meaninful alternative

ARMS - explain again how women have more rights than men?

If you say something to someone and it offends them you have two choices - you can apologize and not say it again. Or you can do what Steven Covey calls "defending your position" and let them know in uncertain terms that you've done nothing "wrong" and if they don't like that's their problem. The essence of the question is "Do you care more about that person or your ego" Y'all just have to decide that for yourselves.

See if you'd just say y'all you wouldn't have to worry about guys/gals whatever.

And I agree - guys has a more neutral and less offensive connotation that girls, gals, ladies ...shudder...

    edited to add P.S.

P.S. If I'm writing - particularly professional or term paper work I opt for "his or her" and "he or she" - that's just my preference.

  18. I voted for Seven.  That blue cat suit they poured her into was pleaing to the eyes.  It had that umph quality.

I read they changed the catsuits because the first one was so tight she kept passing out from not being able to breath. IMO - causing someone physical distress in order to attract male viewers is definitely crossing the line.

  20. I'm thinking maybe I need to change my screen name to something with Tucker - to me the guy is absolutely gorgeous, charming, funny and wise. However, if we were voting for the actor not the character then it would have to be Scott Bakula; Archer just frowns too much.
