  1. If we look at future Trek films from the perspective of the movie industry, I think that the cast of Voyager do not have enough notoriety in the public eye to translate onto the big screen successfully.

     

    The Original Series cast had became a cult in their own right, by the time the movies arrived. Back then, they were the main Sci Fi programme that people wanted more of. Original and fresh.

     

    The Next Generation was the first syndicated programme in its genre and too had that newness and freshness Those characters achieved notoriety as a result of that success that translated well onto the big screen. However, the rise of similar programming dwarfed subsequest generations and left us with Trek with low viewing figures.

     

    I know that all these characters in the small gold fish bowl that is our following, have high status. But out in the ocean that is the real world, they dont. We cannot deny that. Voyager is just anoter programme amidst others like The X Files, Buffy, Angel, Smallville, etc etc. And to try to make a movie out of it would just be a big screen translation of a small screen programme.

     

    Even when Janeway made the big screen, she was ironiacally on a small screen. Hardly on for more than a minute. Janeway basically filled the position that was there already in the film. ANY actor could have done it, and probably to a lot of the cinema going audience, she WAS just some extra filling a part.

     

    I would like to see a Voyager big screen adventure. But I am mature enough and wise enough to know that it isnt going to happen But idf we do have abnother TNg feature, I would prefere it if characters from other series were not just given token parts that any extra could fill just as well.

     

    I lobby for a whole new ship and crew and stylre for the movies that ill set them apart and open up an arc that could continue as an epic, in the Star Wars style.


  2. I felt that in the movies, Picard became almost like a father to Data, as opposed to his new best friend. Certainly, this relationship was never so present in the series. Data became, to Picard, a bit like Spock to Kirk. I think that that was needed in the movie to establish a sense of 'deep bonds'. The wise and the innocent so to speak. However, the strength that existed with other characters such as Worf and Riker were certainly diminished with this more over powering relationship. I always think, though, that it is the 'special' characters that get the attention. Certainly, if there were to be any future films, I would see Seven of Nine being a powerful screen prescence. But themn, that'll never happen because we know that Star Treks less infamous cousins from the big V won't have the notoriety or substance to hit the big screen.


  3. Getting back to the original question, I would have to say that I preferred the first few series of Voyager. The feel was one of isolation and a whole new world, with the Kazon, the Vidiians, the hardship, bio-neural gel packs, and so forth. There was conflict on board the ship and a freshness of character.

     

    Towards the end, we had too much 'Federation'. We had the Borg, regular communication with Star Fleet. Every once in a while they 'lept' another ten light years and the crew became too relaxed and well off compared to earlier series. The show lost what made it different, and diluted the strength of the show.


  4. I feel that the movies dealt well in transferring the series to the big screen without loosing the relationships that had been built up over the seven years the series ran, and in continuing those themes that were important in those episodes. Continuity was strong.

     

    In Generations, I felt, that the themes of Family and comradeship that had existed throughout TOS and TNG were well developed and continuity was well maintained in the characters of Guinan, Duras sisters and even Spot the cat! New developments that wouldn't have worked for a weekly series, such as Data's emotion chip and the destruction of the Enterprise D gave viewers that something extra/special to watch.

     

    First Contact built upon this change, giving Geordi new eyes, introducing a new ship and new uniforms, but keeping the same relationships and continuity: this time with the Borg, Worf and the Defiant, Barclay, and Zefram Cochrane. Bringing back old minor characters was always a plot device in past movies, eg Rand, Commander Kyle (on the Reliant), Chapel, etc. The characters still had a great on screen relationship and held their positions well. The film offered resolution, in a way, to the Best of Both Worlds trauma that Picard endured, and his lighter mood was reflected in subsequent films.

     

    Insurrection again kept those great relationships intact, and offered us a stand alone 'episode' if you wish, that was similar in tone to a tv episode. No real major changes occurred here in the staus quo.

     

    Nemesis gave us the Romulans, again well established characters. This time, the relationships on board change somewhat, with a marriage and a death. This time, I feel, the writers are aware that the TNG crew are coming to the end and it is time to burn down all those bridges in one last pitch: they might as well. Again, we see Guinan and other minor continuities. The core relationships remain the same, and the chemistry is still good. I feel that now, there is more 'fun' in the movies and a high degree of action.

     

    All in all. the tone of the show is retained, the characters have the same values yet change in ways that couldn't have been successfully maintained during the run of the show. I feel that in any future film, that key formula between the characters needs to be maintained, yet something truely spectacular has to occur in a 'party to end all parties'!


  5. Was there too much time travel, and 'alternate time-line/set in the past' episodes on Voyager? What I mean is...

     

    'Time and Again' - Voyager events occur in a time line which is erased at the end of the episode

     

    'Non Sequitur' - Harry Kim awakens in an alternate time line

     

    'Flash back' - through a mind-meld Janeway and Tuvok are taken back to the time of Star Trek 6 (i know not literally and just in Tuvok's head)

     

    'Future's End' - the crew go back to 1996

     

    'Before and After' - Kes time travels back and forth

     

    'Year of Hell' - alternate future, re-set at end

     

    '11.59' - flashback set at the end of 1999

     

    'Fury' - Kes time travels

     

    'Shattered' - time is shattered giving different time periods within the ship

     

    'Endgame' - we all know this one!!!!

     

    This is not to mention all the tother minor references to past things like Friendship One, the 37's, etc etc

     

    Compared to TNG, this is quite a lot. I'm not criticising though, because I love time travel episodes. But you have to admit, that it was a popular story telling mechanism.


  6. I read about this and was very annoyed with James Doohan. The star doesnt cost the earth and he can easily afford it. Instead he is milking some poor fan for the money. The person to donate the money can 'go to the ceremony'. Big whoop. I think that he is being really tight and exploitative: pay it yourself Doohan!!!


  7. Keep Jim Carey away from it!!! Cat woman should return. They had great chemistry: the troubled baddie and the disturbed crime fighter - both just out for a fight. I love Tim Burton films. I heard a rumour that Jack Nicholson would be back. Those two baddies would be great, with maybe a new one thrown in for good measure. A bit like that evil cook guy. I dont know. Gotham was GOTHic and should remain so. Multi coloured light etc are terrible. I have heard though, that the tone will be as per the 60s series... :rofl:


  8. I think that the music with words at the start of Ent is indicative of the whole new approach of the show, and the movement towards bringing the Trek era closer to our own time period. The use of vocals humanises the show more, and takes away that 'far removed' edge one got with the Classical music of the other shows that all mightiness. The tone of the show becomes more casual and less formal.
