  1. I was not aware of some of the experiences Gene had prior to his policeman-into creator days...wow. He went through some close calls. And he was highly honored. As I have mentioned prior here at stf, I grew up catching those early syndictaed TOS episodes here and there, and, while I was in total experience and participation not the fan-fan I am today, and have been since somewhere around or before 1986, Star Trek was ALWAYS something I liked, and enjoyed. I played Spock as a kid, with two friends, one of whom was always Jim Kirk, and my best friend alternatively McCoy, or Sulu...to this day, he bemoans that he never got our roles to play!!...We had wooden communicators, one wooden phaser, and those plastic toys which, while fun, were no match to the great props we all love....oh, and a cigar-box tricorder, with an old car radio or somesuch dial to 'adjust it'..Grin. Great memories....and thanks to Gene and his gang, and of course the actors, whose work brought life to the characters I continue to love. The first film, be it flawed, yes, I saw twice, and did like..after all-STAR TREK was back! And, though I did not see all the subsequent films at the cinema, I have most certainly seen each, and several numerous times in tv repeats, with my own personal favorites....then came NextGen in 87, and I was cranked up for more adventures, which I faithfully watched for seven years, as well as DS9, getting into them, as they came out....but it was Voyager, and Enterprise, neither of which Gene created, but yet to me carried the same kind of loveable characters, the bonds between them , as all Treks have done so well, and the grand exploration of The Final Frontier, which grabbed my heart, inspired my imagination, and bonded me to these wonderful 'people' in a way not since TOS...which, yes, was the forerunner of all. Then JJ. Abrams was given the honor-and the serious responsibility-of carrying Star Trek the First into a new era...yes, I had questions, maybe some doubts, at times, before I saw the film, but I chose to give er a go, and had no regrets, feeling that, whatever its story controversies it might have, it still worked as Trek for me...and I saw young versions of the characters I first liked as a boy, beginning the great adventure-with more to come......So, Star Trek has been a big part of my life. It's 'in my blood'....hours spent watching those ones on screen who mean so much to me, reading novels, writing, buying magazines, and posters, meeting some of the people who were and are these wonderful characters, inspired by a world that would not be here, true..if not for Gene. So, thank you, Mr. Roddenberry...for the memories, and all my wonderful times...to be continued.

  2. I am of course familiar with it, but have never seen it....that said, boy, does that big rumble between two super-telepaths sound cool. 'Charlie X' and 'WhereNo Man' are two favorite eps...yes, too bad Lockwood and Robert Walker weren't on, but, the concept is great. I wasn't aware of that plot element.

  3. It pretty closely follows the film, but, of course, not unlike novelizations of previous outings, or tv eps, it has expanded dialogue in places, and scenes that were cut, such as Spock's birth, and one with Youngest Jim, prior to his certain 'rebellious' act....and therein we get a glimpse of brother George Samuel Kirk, who, here, is taken as the lad walking down the highway when little bro blows by!...I was just re-reading through parts of the book, prompted by your query, Ensign B., and noted how, as said, in another and very important set of scenes-'The Meeting' between two 'generations' mid-point in the film, you have more dialogue not heard, presumably added by Foster, and it's fine of course to do so....''Sometimes the hand of Fate needs a hand itself' Spock Prime tells Young Jim. That was a good line. Also, for anyone who loves Jim Kirk, whatever his universe, McCoy sums his friend up, so essentially, and greatly, on pg. 196..I don't know I recall this from the film...but, it's a wonderful paragraph, that, first time I read it-and now as well-made me grin big. But, it's always good advice to say, if you care to,first, to get your own taste of what you may think about it, or any book, look it up at a local bookseller, thumb through, and decide for yourself....

  4. The comment about Glen someone in that studio or wherever made was uncalled for. That's not a nice thing to say, about anyone, much less, the man who is responsible for the BGL concept itself.Man, Hollywood is, for all its glitz and glamor, a cold place...like I sometimes quote the talented Brent Spiner, in part, ''That's why they call it show business''...it certainly is a BUSINESS....

  5. Yes, the novels for new fans might well be not a focus..but, perhaps, down the line, their interest might develop to the point where they may decide to explore them. But, there are always exceptions, and I wonder if folks who were into sf other than Trek might decide to delve into the books, if they were reading material in other genres? Just a casual thought.

  6. I personally hope something happens. I watched the original, and that is waht I think of-flaws ther may be-in the original, which had interesting characters, and an intriguing premise, if I didn't buy the 'colonized Earth' premise, but other than that, was an interesting series, whose fx were then state-of-the art. Maybe Glen Larson will be able to make a Galactica film closer to his original vision, than the newere series, which, to be fair, I have only seen two NBC telemovies, or some kind of ep mashup from BGL 2.0, so, shrug....back in the day, BGL 'Classic' and Star Wars were my two big favorites....and I did see ST:TMP twice...BTW....it would be wonderful, to see Dirk, Richard, and Herb Jefferson again...even if in cameos, and as some other characters....

  7. I'm not sure it's something I would have done-no, quite unlikely, had the story been something I had come up with as a fan-writer, but, in that vein, I have asked myself if I would continue with the other reality as set up-being Vulcan gone-and I would say, I probably would leave it as done..though I can see why many are bothered by this. Conceivably, Nero could have lost a home COLONY, rather than the Homeworld, had they so wished to set it up so, and had him yet out for revenge.....and still had no less a vengence in him....and they might have destroyed some other world, or one totally derived brand new...as was Veridian in 'Generations', but well.. I guess it'd have been less dramatic...then there's Amanda...shrug.....I will say, the 24th century 'whole galaxy being threatened ' concept perplexes me; I am no astrophysicist, but come, now...yes, a solar system, which would be enough-especially Romulus...anyway, some side thoughts here, if that's okay....

  8. I share a birthday with one of the Star Trek Captains. I once did a live, on the radio(from my home phone) voice- over for the TOS series theme , with the music playing in the background, after calling in to a local country station years ago when they incorrectly did Shat's intro during a music interlude. My father was a florist. My mother was a bank teller for most of her adult life.(And she loved Star Wars)And, lastly, I have seen only six of the ST films at the theater.

  9. I just listened to an old interview done with him in '91, on NPR's ''Fresh Air'', and I was impressed. Of course, I knew he was connected to music, i.e. guitars, but I did not realize how truly clever and inventive he was....and how he adapted to health changes, for ex , after a car accident in 48 that put him up in a hospital for two years. He was a remarkably resilient person, and determined. He really was an innovator.

  10. It is now being reported at CNN, incuding their 'Asia' page online(see for further and full references) that the United Nations Security Council has expressed ''serious concern'' regarding the sentencing of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Myanmar(Burma) pro-democracy leader, who has spent years in one form of confinement or another, for her support of freedom and human rights in her country-a movement shared by others across her nation. The current Junta has sentenced her to 1 and a half years of house arrest, causing condemnation from across the global community. TheU.N. Secretary General BaN Ki-Moon, the Dalai Lama, and United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have all expressed their serious regard for this action....U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice called Suu Kyi's incarceration a ''violation of the universal principles of human rights''....the E.U. has planned to take actions via sanctions, and ther are plans to seize the assets of certain individuals so involved....again, for more, go to the CNN 'ASIA' Online page....which includes more articles on all related topics.

  11. I am sure Lance played a suitably chilling role....also was of course Bishop in the terrific 1st sequel to 'Alien', itself a classic.

  12. I am old enough to remember Kevin Tighe, when he, and Randolph Mantooth starred in the 70's on 'Emergency'...he also has had other noteable genre appearances, such as John Locke's father on ''LOST''....I liked hearing the others recount some of their own ancestries, it gave more detail for backstories...and we see Kathryn's past folks. I wasn't as into this ep, but it was yet important for my second favorite character. But, then, there is the explorer, here, in her predecessor, which was so very much our Kathryn!
