Coming from the area, and culture that I do, I believe I can understand the concerns of those who framed this particular piece of legislation....but will say, there has been some 'hybridization', if broadly looking at it so, in the form of humans who have had animal organs as temporary or long-term relacement organs...but of course it's not mingling chromosomes, etc....the further science reaches-or is able to-it is important, to at least take careful steps, as humanity goes forward as a race...before stepping off into any particular endeavors, be it cloning-I'd say an easier issue-human-wise-to agree on than animal version...or this issue...

No, I don't see a connnection, either. It was just a natural, if bizarre, roving 'doorway' into what was some sort of otherwise closed , extra-temporal reality where time is not binding on one physically, a reality in which the thoughts of the one who is pulled in shape the form it takes -and at least to one's physical senses is very real...as was to Jim..for a 'time'... Now, the Prophets live in something a bit similar there,in the respect that they are outside the 'Linear' stream of time-(and here it just now occurs, is a tip of the hat to VGB's comments!)) ;one can however see, if one thinks about it-pun half-intended-allusions to 'Where No One Has Gone Before''(TNG) in which the Enterprise -D travels to a region of our galaxy so remote..where again, thoughts become 'REAL'...or look like it. In this case, the situations vary-Tasha back on her colony(she feels as if) , embracing her cat....Worf 'conjuring up' a Klingon female-whom Geordi or someone sees as well, and asks him about it..Picard sees his mother, 'speaks with her', even if Will does not see her...

I think to be honest the writers did create a potentially contestive plot device to tell their story, and it does make perfect sense to want to, as VGB suggests, to 'follow the rules'...but this is how Orci and Kurtzman saw, from their perspective, what they felt the only way to both give a 'fresh take'-however one feels about that 'version'-and still retain everyting that had been created before, from Archer to Janeway...I accept their stating that it all remains, is unharmed...I would have no less than all my favorites 'untouched'...I just can't see them being so foolish as to dare imply or intend otherwise, no matter their desire to 'jump-start' the franchise, which I was a loyal fan of whatever the rest of the planet's felings about it, and I am not alone in that 'continued faith' so to speak....I suppose you just have to accept the 'odd singularity' effects that preumably enable this way of doing it all, among other things....if you want to like and take the film franchise into one's fandom...

Tonight on the BBC World radio program at PRI, a report about a new film which is in fact footage shot during a swell of protest and demands for freedom from activists in Burma in 2007, lead by Buddhist Monks.Covertly, groups of couraegeous citizens took handheld cameras, and shot footage of the events, which have now become the film,'' VJ Burma''. Young and old took part in the protests, filled with hope that a difference would be made as a result, that the world would be watching...but, sadly, the effort was brutally crushed. A number of the participants ended up in Burmese prisons, but at least one interviewed was able to escpae, and spoke how, fortunately, at least not as many perished, as in a similar attempt in 1988. He still believes in the movement-as do many other people throughout the world-such as Walter Koenig, who has brought this issue of freedom and human rights to Trekfans. ''It's not the people who must change'' this survivor says, '' but the government'' VJ Burma is set to premiere at some point soon in GB. Another point of hope, is that Ban Kee Moon of the U.N. has visited the country, also known as Mynmar, and convinced the military junta to release some political prisoners, to participate in elections ahead.....our best wishes, to the people and brave souls in Burma...Again, for more, go to Walter's site, and for further links...

An update re this topic: Just read at Trekmovie, that in fact, the first regular 'Newtrek' as I call it, or 'Abramstrek' if you prefer followup novel will NOT be about the Vulcans...but such a tale will follow in the third book, due later in 2010. Four in all are planned, and one involves 'World-building' with the new crew...anyway, that's the latest on that. LLAP!

Whatever the response, it was a terrific episode, IMO...one of the most personal, and moving eps of later seasons of my fave show....

Ah, but Jim 'turned death into a fighting chance to live'..even if he did sacrifice His Lady....as would Jean-Luc if rergretfully, for sake of his friends, and crew....

If asked to choose, then, respectfully, Kirk.

As stated elsewhere, I like the fx. I don't at all see them as 'messing up' what was done....Gene would have loved to have had this level of technology at his fingertips in the sixties-and certainly Jim Rugg, and his people. And the added shots are icing on the cake. Like VGB, I have seen the TOS eps countless times as they've come my way in syndication 'bursts' over the years,but this change is not a problem for me...especially when you compare what was done...not that Matt's Enterprise wouldn't have remained a classic design, even if none of this had been taken on.

I would have to go for Dukat. But, Louise Fletcher did play the 'smarmy politico' well...all the references to Kira with the 'My child', and etc...with the smile that got under poor Kira's skin, as she knew so well who was the woman beneath the robes...and dealing with a man who epitomized everything she depised...played well by Marc Alaimo

T'Pol's own mother stated to her as she lay dying in the Syrannites' hideaway, and as her daughter openly and abundantly shows grief, ''Your emotions have always been close to the surface''. Not a condemnation-certainly not as she breathed her last moments-but a statement of fact. T'Pol's trellium addiction tore down the barriers Vulcans work to build and maintain, to keep them in CHECK....as shown so poignantly, as she believes Archer dead after going on the 'suicide mission' in the Xindi Insectoid pod down to the Weapon locale underwater...to me, this was importantly a testament to the feelings, not just as a first officer to her captain, but from a friend to a 'lost friend', T'Pol had developed over their journey for Jonathan....yes, Vulcans still have to be Vulcans, essentially, to be true to how they were created for ST..but to me it's wonderful to get a glimpse of the feelings we know they have for those they do care about, and for.....Another case in point, the great Voyager ep, ''Riddles'', in which Tuvok is stripped down mentally and emotionally to almost a child-like state...not great in the act that caused it, but to see Tim playing his character as Neelix had always wished he could be...a true friend, who appreciated him. It was a nice interlude...

According to an article which may be linked to via a news brief on the main page of 'Trekcore' a few days ago, Alan Dean Foster is to pen a follow-up to his rendering of Young Kirk, Spock, and co.'s story, due I believe sometime next year. It's tentatively called ''Refugees'', and it has been speculated by fans-and seems 'logical'-that this may involve the Vulcans, post-film....looking forward to it! Foster among other things, says that it will have a greater emphasis on characters, and their development-but that there will yet be action in it, as well. The film certainly inspires me as a fan-writer, also....

I was reading my book "Chariots for Apollo" which is about the making if the Lunar Modules for the Apollo program. In it, the writer was speaking of Jesco Von Puttkamer and his role in the design of the LM and that he was in a hurry to finish his work one night so he could get home to watch his favorite TV show... Star Trek.

I was listening to a local region Top 40 radio station, and the DJ, signing off said, ''Beam Me Up, Scotty!"....

I don't have it, but the comic ''Countdown''-from what I have heard of, and seen, in a few omline excerpts, has the guys' 'eldest brother' assuming-becoming/-Data..he did dump a lot of 'data'-wink, wink-into B4's memory..to me, it was a nice enough way, if not officially canon, to have him back in the Trekverse...
