I'd give it an 8.5 or maybe even 9;
First, for the science I don't get male/female/cogenitor. Male and female are concepts that apply to bi-gender reproduction. It seems to me that tri-gender should have genders A,B,C - three totally different genders.
Click for Spoiler:
Suicide - the cogenitor commited suicide because "it" lived in an oppressive society. I think the real fiction here is that it or its never kind never realized that until it met Trip.
cptwright Posted on Apr 30 2003, 11:11 PMI'm going to take your challenge:
Click for Spoiler:
if you were raised along with the rest of you planet in a certain way, its not wrong to you. so as outsiders, we need to respect their ways, and customs. who are we to tell others they are wrong, that is arogant, and pigheaded, on tripps part, and ours. as you see in the end, you took the cogenitor out of its place, then it didnt know what to do so it killed itself, thats better than what it was doing, i dont think so. as for archer, i was impressed with the assertive, strong reaction on his part, and i think it was rightly justified. one last thought, would you want an outside race coming to us and telling us what horrible people we are for raising cattle for the sole purpose of killing it to eat it. only example that comes to mind, put in any situation you want.Click for Spoiler:
Any situation I want; well, how about Georgia in 1860; you've been raised your whole life to believe certain people were less capable than others; Do you appreciate folks from the North coming in and telling you what horrible people you are.Is what Trip did any worse than running the underground railroad - which was at the time illegal
As for Archer's reaction:
Click for Spoiler:
As an officer Trip has an obligation to follow orders; but Trip believed he was following the Captain's example - whose fault is that? I really have a hard time distinquishing this instance from other instances where Archer rushed in to help; except that he got along so well with the other Captain and there was profitable relationship to be had.Does that mean its okay to do business with countries that violate human rights if there is a profit to be made
Click for Spoiler:
Archer didn't do a good job of convincing me it was the cogenitor's welfare and not the loss of the relationship with the new species that he was upset about. Oh and that line about the life that will never be - give me a break - a species that aborts its unborn is concerned about a failed attempt at conception -
The anticipation is driving me crazy. We don't have a regular upn affiliate here to I have to wait until 11:00 p.m. EDT

I just read some comments over at ST.com - apparently there is more depth than the previews indicated in this episode. Of course now:
Click for Spoiler:
I don't want to see Trip in the dog house -
I'm hoping I'm wrong but I have a little misgivings about tonights episode after seeing the previews. Either:
1. It will be too much like A Night In Sickbay (no plot and lots of sex jokes) - which will be a disappointment after the last several episodes
or
2. It's going to take the opportunity to preach down to us about tolerance.
Did anybody else get that feeling?

In Fallen Hero - T'Pol suggested to Archer and Tucker that "the human mating ritual was effective at reducing tension" Tucker replied "hasn't always been my experience"

Sorry, I didn't tape it and I don't know how to convert vhs to my pc; however, I would check Kazaa over the next couple of days - could be someone taped it and placed it out there.
Also, it is available for purchase at the A and E website.

Did anyone watch this? It was great.

I loved the top and cane routine on the Enterprise bridge -
I voted other,I start my morning with a ice cold Coca-Cola. -
wow, thanks.

I've thought about it - but I was afraid it would be like Seventh Heaven and those kids on that show irritate me. Is it the kind of show that if you missed the first episodes you'll be lost forever?

Patrick Stewart is the scheduled bio for tonight on A&E.

I agree that the money could be spent on the show, but it would be a way to bring in new ideas, and anything that went in the face of the canon could be disqualified, but it would give a way for the fans to get a chance to contribute. And the contest rules could state that all scripts would become the sole property of Paramont and that the writers would not receive monetary compensation for the use now or in the future of any of their works. And maybe let the winning writer have a small one or two line part in the episode.
Maybe they could do an online pre-qualifying test to weed out those who had no concept of the canon - and let those people who passed submit their scripts. It would reduce paperwork. The winner could probably do a walk-on with no lines because of SAG rules but hey - just to be there.
master_q Posted on Apr 29 2003, 05:39 PMI really would have to watch the show a bit more before I could really write out all of my general ideas to the show
I think it has gotten better, I hope the last episode you watched wasn't A Night in Sickbay or The Seventh or even Vanishing Point. Episodes like Cease Fire, Future Tense, Judgment, and The Breach have been wonderful.

I probably should clarify what I mean a bit more. Do you think lack of emotions hinder the development of one self and ideas of philosophical discussion? And so on . . . .Master Q
StarTrek_Master_Q@yahoo.com
Wow, I'm having a deja vu moment. It seems like I've seen this topic before - maybe on another board.
The short answer - if lack of emotions was a naturally occuring phenomenon in the species then the lack of said emotions would not affect the "true" development of the individual.
But it is not a naturally occuring state in Vulcans. They spend years of training to suppress all emotions. Some people like to throw in the term evolve. Vulcans did not evolve into an emotionless species. If over time their DNA mutated so that their brains no longer produced emotion inducing chemicals you could say they had evolved. But they still possess the physical capacity for emotion. They made a consious, cultural decision to suppress emotions.
I also think there is a distinction between suppressing emotion and controlling emotion. And personally I think the latter reflects a stronger, healthier character.

It would be hard to choose between Enterprise and StargateSG1. They both have areas they're better at.
Besides these shows I also watch Law & Order and the two CSI's; oh and I like Monk and the Dead Zone both on USA network.
-
Most episodes only have about 42-43 minutes of actual air time. I've noticed in a couple of episodes there was too much talk time and all the action was crammed into the last 3-5 minutes. The ending in Judgment did seem a little abrupt (or too easy) but overall I really like the episode
I think one reason "The Breach" was so interesting is it had some action throughout the whole episode. Loved that "just testing the ropes"

master_q,
I am curious what you think would appeal to a broader audience. I think the idea of the babe in the catsuit was planned after that line of thought but it doesn't seem to be working. In fact some of my friends refer to T'Pol as a reason they quit watching the show. It seems to me that a strong plot seems to be what keeps shows in the top ten. Look at Law & Order - they've changed every cast member at least once, never concentrate on cast's personal lives (they sure don't rub glitter gel on each other) and they're the longest running drama on television and still in the top ten.
ddillard - I like the contest idea - I think there's a way they could make it work.
all,
I think the appeal ST has had for me can be described in the words of a guest character to Tom Paris; "You're not like the other men I know - you care about something other than your own little life" And that is what has drawn me to ST, people that are really interested in something - in science, in knowledge; and ST personnel have made a commitment to live by a standards of truth and principle. Maybe I am one of the dinasaurs master-q is talking about but if they start caring about nothing but their own little lives I wouldn't watch anymore

the summons, the street lawyer, the testament, and a painted house, all written by john grisham.i love his style of legal thriller.
There was some tv movie on last night based on a Grisham book - I think it was a Painted House. Maybe it will be available on video if you don't get the broadcast there.

The guy is quite funny but I think my favorite line was from singularity. Reed wanted to know which alarm he liked best and Trip replied "They both sound like a bag of cats"
-
I voted for Tucker/Archer, but I would have to say that it depends on what the away mission is before making a sound judgement, as all of the crew have their strong points, that would make any of them the first choice for the right mission.Good point.

We like Kirk flying around and we like Picard flying around and so on. And most fans - the majority of fans would try to have this again. Playing the same old thing over and over again . . . . . that’s how it is and it might sound not true or something like that, but that’s a majority of people would run it and probably would do more harm then good.I'm missing something here. I still don't get what you mean by conservative versus where you would like to see the show go. If not starships what. I think the one time stops on a planet gave TOS and TNG the opportunity to explore an issue and then let it go and move on to something else. Not that you can't intersperse those types of episodes with an ongoing story arc - if that's what you mean.

It's not that bad, just a small monthly fee I have to pay. All the upgrades I've added were "free" as far as money goes. It only "cost" time for me to sit here and edit the code to make it all work. This is a test to see if I can quote two different posts in a response
Alterego Posted on Apr 19 2003, 12:57 AMClick on the color tag, choose any color, then erase that color from the code and type in a different color, is how I do it but there might be an easier way I haven't learned yet.
Let's see - well it involved cutting and pasting but it worked
-
I'm sorry but I don't remember saying anything about "conservative" anything on this thread, did I imply it?No, I should have put a separate header on that paragraph - I haven't figured out how to quote from two different sources on a response. Sorry

My point was
Click for Spoiler:
that Archer didn't have a problem throwing another culture's values to the wind and creating an enemy in episodes like "Detained" - He sure as heck didn't object to contravening Klingon culture in "Judgment. If Trip disobeyed an order or violated Star Fleet protocol then he should be willing to accept the consequences; but Archer didn't make clear what protocol Trip violated that he(Archer) hasn't.As for the unborn child issue I've never had children -something I wanted very much - I'd buy someone a dang library and take them to every national park in the country if they could help me have a child. Seems to me rather than blaming Trip this couple should be asking why they weren't willing to make any concessions to get something they professed to be of value to them.

I agree Archer was over the top but what specific order did Trip disobey - I think that was part of the point - there were no predefined regulations for first contact so how was he to know he was violating one of themWelcome to the new guys, meatwad and admiral kirk;
