  1. I've actually seen a movie in a theatre twice in the last two years; you got it LOTR - Fellowship and Two Towers. Everything else I rent. The fact that I live in a small town with limited theatre access doesn't help. And I really shouldn't be on these boards because I've never seen Nemesis - it didn't play here and I was working too much overtime to drive out of town. So here's to May 20th though I pretty much know what to expect.

What you miss in big screen view you make up with the rewind button and not missing anything for restroom breaks

  2. My favorite movies tend not to top any lists - Other than the LOTR movies which are worthy of shrines

Has anyone seen any of these?

House of Mirth - with Gillian Anderson

    Dancer Texas, pop 84

    The War of the Buttons

    The Winslow Boy

    The Other Side of Heaven

Local Hero - odd sort of movie from the 80's

Deterrence or The China Syndrome - thought provoking

  3. My question wasn't meant to be offensive - there's a case going to the US Supreme Court as well, but they're basing their legal claim on the law of privacy which means governments can't really pick and choose between lifestyles. Besides I don't really see a difference - if there aren't enough heterosexual men then heterosexual women don't have much choice other than to be alone - that doesn't seem fair.

  4. What is your favorite all time movie?

What is the scariest movie you've ever seen?

    The funniest?

    The most thought provoking?

    The saddest

    Offbeat

    Romance

    All time favorite - Casablanca

    scariest - Jaws

Funniest - Gods Must be Crazy or As Good as it Gets

Thought Provoking - The Killing Fields

Saddest - The Shootist (John Wayne's last) or ST II (obvious)

Offbeat - Dancer, Texas population 84 (did anyone else see this?)

Romance - Buffalo Jump not as boring as most

  5. I don't know the details of the ruling but will it open the way for polygamy too? It seems to me if a significant number of men opt for same sex marriages (and I believe there are more gay men than lesbians) that heterosexual women will need to double up. Don't think I'm a proponant - I'm just doing the math.

    Had to change a word

  6. Yes.  And I believe that it is only going to get better.

    Other favorites:

The X-Files - I'm still in withdrawl (pitiful, I know)

    Northern Exposure

    Quantum Leap (Duh)

    Monk

    Nero Wolf

    Thanks for the welcome,

    thayln

Another Nero Wolfe fan...good for you. At first I thought I was crazy then I realized they used the same ensemble cast as different characters each week. Now Timothy Hutton is a real doll.

I like to watch Monk too. And I was sad about the X-files but they had some duds the last season; loved the Brady Bunch House episode - classic X files.

  7. Well my first Barbie doll ever was the Star Trek 30th anniversary Barbie and Ken. I have the old lp "Leonard Nimoy presents Mr. Spock's Music from Outer Space" I saw one of these at the special exhibit the Smithsonian had. And I have noticed I tend to get ST themed Christmas presents. And I did get to "meet" George Takai and Walter Koenig - which amounted to handing them a program and getting it signed - but I have moved so many times I don't think I still have this.

  8. Yes - I believe there is life in the universe besides us

No - I don't believe in alien kidnappings - saw a great possible explanation for this once.

I am such a total geek - I got this book from the library once about a conference convened to conduct a scientific analysis of UFO's; it also referenced something called the bluebook project with the Air Force. Anyway there are some definite unexplained phenomena; although the source may be closer to home.

Still, as the book pointed out we don't have an organization that uses scientific principles to investigate. There were one or two incidents in the book that made me wonder.

There are some real hokey programs on tv about aliens too but I've seen a couple that were more investigative; like airplane pilots who saw things they couldn't explain but would never go on record because of their careers.

One thing I'm certain of - something happened in Roswell - maybe the alien part only meant Russian but goodness I'd really like to know what happened.

  9. Definitely depends on the man...

Worf did look good with long hair...

I like the guy Tyr on Andromeda but I suspect that is for the role - not the actor's real hair

All that being said - I personally find short hair attractive

Maybe you can find one of those programs that models how you would look with different lengths and you can choose which is the "real you."

  10. thayln - that was a good first post.

    Click for Spoiler:

I felt worse for Trip than Archer - he really thought he was following Archer's example and he is going to have some major guilt to live through. If Archer is a decent Captain he'll help Trip work through it to become a better officer.

As for America interfering in the world. So far I've tried to keep mum on our actions in Iraq if that's what you're speaking of but I saw those actions as self-defense. If I wasn't so old, out-of-shape and useless I'd have considered signing up if it meant preserving the life or liberty of people I love. But like Frost's Road Not Taken we will never know what the other choice would have yielded and those of us that think about such things will always have to wonder if we did the right thing

  11. We've heard repeated announcements that there will be changes in each character's development. I think last night gave us a glimpse of that.

    Click for Spoiler:

What do you think lies ahead for Trip? Will he get demoted? Will he cease to be funny - which I think would be a loss to the program? Will he get wiser - let's hope so? Will he and the Archer still be "friends" - although I've noticed they've had very little contact this season. Archer's been too busy with T'Pol.

  12. Click for Spoiler:

The sad thing was, when Trip said he did just what Archer would have done, is that the captain could not objectively judge his own behaviour, in that had set a precedent on other occasions for Trip's desire to help the underdog and interfere when it was not their place. It left you the impression that Archer was more ticked about the "politcal" ramifications and his lost "friendship" than he was the welfare of an intelligent sentient being who had asked his help.

    Ktrek

I know this is just a TV show but this episode really left me in shock. I think you've hit on issue that needs to be addressed before I will feel this episode is settled.

    Click for Spoiler:

I rewatched the last couple of scenes with Archer and Trip and I swear Archer could have been giving that lecture to himself. He has interfered so many times. Trip certainly deserves some disciplinary action; but unless Archer looks at himself in the mirror and realizes the example he did set this episode won't have accomplished as much as it could have.

I keep thinking of "Detained" - I wonder if Archer would have been so quick to help the Suliban if the internment camp leader had taken him stargazing rather than locking him up. Gotta wonder.
