  1. Please explain to me what is with being homosexual have to do with weather or not books are not canon?

Sorry if I was misunderstood. It's not the homosexuality itself that makes these novels non-canon, it's just not something these characters, as portrayed on screen, would do. James T Kirk NEVER displayed any homosexual tendencies and Spock, being half-Vulcan, would probably see homosexuality as illogical because it cannot lead to procreation. That's just my personal opinion, though, OK?

  2. I voted for The Trouble With Tribbles. I would rather laugh than cry. Besides, that Edith Keeler (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't) was messing with MY HUSBAND!! She's lucky that truck got to her before I did! Just kidding, of course. <_<

  3. Well, IMHO, the two main reasons that novels are not considered canon are: the "slash" authors..these novels feature a homosexual relationship between two main characters. Kirk/Spock slash was everywhere during the "down" time between the cancellation of TOS and the release of TMP. These novels were very graphic and, in my opinion, disgusting. The second reason is the "Mary Sue" authors. These authors were usually female and introduced themselves as a new character on the Enterprise. The authors favorite established character (usually Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Checkov or Scotty) would of course fall madly in love with her and she would either (a) marry the man of her dreams and they live happily ever after or (<_< die a heroic or tragic death, leaving the man of her dreams hopelessly shattered and unable to love again. These novels were so syrupy they left the reader diabetic and had established characters doing things they would NEVER do in the name of love. Just my two cents folks!

  4. There is another group of people who are discriminated against by landlords...single mothers. I know this because I experienced it first hand when my son was little. One particular story sticks in my mind even though it happened over 20 years ago. My son was just a baby at the time, less than a year old, and I was looking for an apartment of my own because at the time I was staying with my mom. I found an ad in the newspaper for a two bedroom flat that was reasonably priced and was nearby to where my friends and family lived. It was also on a bus line, which was important to me because at the time I didn't have a car. I called the number in the ad and spoke to a man who told me the apartment was still available and invited me to come take a look. My sister agreed to drive me and off we went. I arrived less than 15 minutes after completing the phone call. I was greeted by the landlord, who saw me standing there with my son in my arms, and immediately asked "Where's your husband?" I was a little taken aback by the question, but I politely explained that I was an unmarried mother with a job and I would be renting the apartment for my son and myself only. His response? "The apartment has been rented!" I explained that I had spoken to him less than 15 minutes earlier and was told that it was indeed available, but he refused to listen. He cut me off and ushered me out the door rather rudely. The apartment was indeed NOT rented at the time, this gentleman simply didn't want to rent to a single mother but wouldn't admit it because he knew that it was against the law to discriminate against me for that reason. What an (Ignore me, I'm using profanity)!!

  5. I am considering switching over to Comcast high-speed DSL (as I have Comcast cable television already).

The above statement left me a bit confused. Comcast DSL? You see, a high speed data via a cable modem and DSL are two different services. DSL utilizes your phone line, but due to the bandwith, you can be on the phone while using your modem. Broadband internet services via a cable modem doesn't require a phone line. Your data and video services are transmitted via your cable lines. I have heard a few drawbacks regarding DSL, but my information may be biased because I am a former Time Warner Cable employee. The speed of your DSL connection can vary depending where you live. If you live nearby a telephone switching station, your speed will be faster. The further away from the switching station, the slower the speed. Cable modems are not affected by where you live. I personally use a cable modem, and my ISP is RoadRunner, which is owned by Time Warner Cable.

  6. The XP firewall simply causes you to surf the net in "stealth mode." What that means is your computer can't be seen to any nasties scanning the net for open ports. It doesn't do anything to notify you of an attack, inbound or outbound. Most firewalls do. What that means is that if. per chance, you have a trojan installed on your system, unbeknownst to you of course, a firewall would notify you of any outbound traffic, allow you to scrutinize it, and gives you the opportunity to block any outbound traffic caused by a program you don't recognize. The same applies to inbound traffic. A firewall also warns you of any "scans" or "pings" coming through. The XP firewall does none of the above. It simply makes you invisible on the internet. I myself use a free firewall called Sygate, and a free anti-virus program called AVG. I also have Ad-Aware installed and update it regularly. Hope that helps!

  7. Hi gang! I noticed the online user list is pretty long today so I've decided we should do something a little different. I've noticed the only time the chat room is used is for the pre-scheduled sessions, trivia, server update, and Enterprise eppy discussions. Well, Mrs Kirk is declaring, RIGHT NOW, a startrekfans.net "just for the hell of it" chat! Anyone game? It's now 6:40pm CST. Come to the chat room right now! I wanna see how many of you actually show up! A challenge has been issued!!

  8. I love Mel Brooks movies!! I saw "Blazing Saddles" while it was still in the theatres (yes, I'm that old), and while I didn't really care for the gaseous camp fire scene (too gross, in my opinion) I still remember my favorite scene from that movie quite well. It's the one where the town full of bigoted cowboys is anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new sheriff, with a band waiting to play and church bells ringing. The "lookout" spots Cleavon Little's character approaching, and tries to tell the rest of the townspeople about him but keeps getting interrupted by the ringing church bells...

LOOKOUT: "Hey!!! The sheriff's a ni..." BONG, the church bells ring.

COWBOY IN CROWD: "What'd he say? The sheriff's a-near?"

LOOKOUT: "No!!! I said the sheriff's a ni..." BONG the church bell rings again.

Classic Mel Brooks stuff. I laughed my butt off!

  9. I do believe this topic has touched on one of the main reasons I prefer the TOS cast movies over the TNG cast movies. The TOS movies all had an underlying theme-the characters and their relationship to each other. TMP showed the original Enterprise Seven reunited and showed how pleased they were to once again be working for James T Kirk. The TWOK, TSFS, and TVH trilogy focused on the loyalty and sacrifices James T Kirk would make for his crew, mainly Mr Spock. TFF focused on "the big three" i.e., Kirk, Spock, and McCoy and shows that not even a brainwashing by a renegade Vulcan can break the bond between them. TUC once again focused on the crew's loyalty to Captain Kirk, where even logical Mr Spock defies Starfleet orders and puts his career on the line to rescue Kirk and McCoy from the Klingon prison planet. The TNG films seemed to focus more on CGI and shoot 'em up action than on the characters. Just my opinion folks, don't kill me, OK?

  10. will disabling the pop ups prevent msn messenger or windows messenger from functioning properly?  I do talk to people alot with it, and wish to continue doing so.  Thanks!

Disabling the Windows Messenger service for Windows XP will not affect your MSN Messenger service at all. They are two separate programs.

  11. I had a hard time deciding between Star Trek: The Return or Star Trek: Excelsior. The reason is that both series could feature James T Kirk. The Return takes place after Generations and features a resurrected Captain Kirk, and Excelsior takes place BEFORE Generations, so Kirk isn't dead yet. However, if the Excelsior series goes on long enough, it could bump into the Generations timeline and we could see Sulu and Rand's reactions to hearing the news of Captain Kirk's death. In the end, though, I voted for The Return. I wanna see James T Kirk back in action!

  12. Another tip: if you have any software installed on the ME system that you will be transferring to the XP system, you have to pay close attention to the steps used while setting up XP. The reason is, XP gives you a choice of two file formats, FAT32 or NTFS. If you want your old software to be compatible with XP, you have to choose the FAT32 file format.

  13. I voted cultural tradition morphed from pagan holiday. Nothing satanic about it. I remember reading somewhere that the pagan holiday was originally called All Hallows Eve, from which the shortened Halloween emerged. And I also equate Halloween with fun. I love seeing small children come to my door with their parents while trick or treating. Some of those little costumes are so damned cute!! Halloween parties at the bar are a hoot, too. I've seen alot of creative and hilarious costumes over the years. I myself don't dress up. If anybody asks, I tell them I'm costumed as a tall, skinny, thirsty Polack and ask the person to buy me a beer. Usually works-got a lot of free beer with that line. When I was a kid, trick or treat was on Halloween night. I thought trick or treating at night was alot more fun than what goes on now-trick or treating on the Sunday afternoon BEFORE Halloween. No fun there!!![/color]

  14. Neelix for me. He was nothing but a hitchhiker picked up by Voyager who happens to bring his girlfriend with him. He was a whiny pain in the butt with nothing to contribute to the ship or it's crew (well, maybe except for bad cooking), and he had NO BUSINESS spending as much time on the bridge as he did! If I were Captain Janeway, I'd have backhanded the little twerp after I told him to shut the f##k up!
