  1. well for me voyager is what brought me back to trek...after season 5 of TNG..i kinda dropped off..but thanks to the wonders of the internet...i was able to catchup with all my TNG, DS9, ENT and of course voyager....

as i have seen every episode of the star trek genre..im pretty sure i can answer most questions u might have...being a engineer by trade..i pretty much have allthe mechanics of star trek science as well... hit me up if u have any questions..

  2. I think it's one of those things that TPTB added in because it's a point of reference to every day life for the viewers to identify with. When you drive your car you have to keep the gas pedal depressed in order to keep the car moving so in space you have to keep your engines running to keep your ship moving. Now we all know that isn't really the way it would be in space but we also know that in the vacuum of space there is no sound, yet we hear explosions and ships swishing past all the time. Back in the 60's TPTB knowingly added in these inaccuracies simply because it's a TV show in the 20th (now 21st) century and not everyone would understand how real space travel would be. Think about how dull it would be to watch a ship sailing along in total darkness (no stars visible like we see) in total silence and they don't even have their engines running. It would make for a pretty dull show, and I think that's the only reason these inaccuracies are in place.

I think VBG got my point the best...my whole point was to show that impluse(sublight) engines more or less dont need to stay on when max velocity is achieved and that the TPTB just added it for the dramatic affect..

  3. Until the engines are at maximum, velocity increases exponentially to warp point 9 or just below the warp threshold correct? "Coasting" could occur at any time, turn of the impulse deck and coast but they probably would not coast until maximum impulse velocity is achieved. The maximum velocity is not instantly achieved correct? Therefore they continue to fire until it is.

so then u do agree that the engines would be shutoff once max velocity is attained....

For impulse braking I have always assumed there are a set of shields around the impulse deck which when activated, steers the impulse engine thrust up and over the top of the saucer towards the front causing the same energy used to move the mass forward as braking energy as well. Just like airline engines of today except they use metal clamshells to deflect the exhaust forward instead of invisible force fields.

thats a far stretch as i have never ever heard of something like this in the ST world...makes complete sense..but id hate to be the guy who has a cabin on the aft top side who gets woken up in the middle of the nite when the captain calls all stop and my room turns into a sauna..

  4. you may have misunderstood me....i believe there are gravitational forces all over the galaxy from every star - dont they come from the galatic core which then causes the galaxy spinning?

true, but if u think about it...voyager (the probe) hasnt used any thrust in the past 15 years...in fact i think that it may be accelerating not decellerating over time...thus the graviational pull on a starship is negligible considering full impulse is something like .9 of light speed.

  5. What i think - remember Exile?  what if this is true, except the "small moons" are actual planets? where the impulse engines must work overtime to move from distortion to distorion - but the internia dampeners have been tuned to cut them out?

    Click for Spoiler:

    ent058_001.jpg

i do see your point that engines would need to generate a constant thrust to oppose gravitational forces like in the case when a ship is in orbit..

nevertheless ive seen ship shots in open space where the impulse engines are constantly on and to me that doesnt make sense as there are no gravity bodies present to provide a reduction in velocity.

  6. It seems to me that you're arguing against your self.  Thrusters in the front of the ship would do the same thing as in the rear, regardless of the the amount of thrust they produced.

Additionally, ships usually use impulse power to move away from  large massy objects, such as a planet (granted, not all the time, but in most instances).  So it makes sense that impulse engines would have a hard time moving out of a strong gravitational pull, even though the ship itself is in a frictionless vacuum.

This may have nothing to do with what you are talking about, if so please disregard the above.

    Jeff

the thing is impulse engines and thrusters are different..... impulse engines im guessing have maybe 100 times the output that thrusters would...so i dont think that im arguing against myself...a visual look of a ships blueprints will show that impulse engines are literally 100 times larger than thruster assemblies.. so again..i think that to counteract the same thrust that is generated by the impulse engines...the same sized engine should be present on the front side...

  7. ok heres the deal...not to technical, but is sound in theory

so as we all have heard like a zillion times the quote "impulse engines are at maximum" or we have seen the exhaust on the primary hull from the engines while the ship is moving through space.

so this is what i was thinking before i went to bed...in space which is a vacuum, there is no wind or drag.. so what would slow them down?? so that being the case, why would the engines need to stay on? all the engines need to do is create a momentary surge of acceleration to get the ship moving forward...after that they would be shut off wouldnt u think? then...when the captain calls for all stop.. shouldnt the same amount of thrust be applied in the opposite direction? meaning..shouldnt there be impulse engines in the front too? i know that there are manuvering thrusters in the front of the ship, but thats all they are really good for...manuvering... its not like 5 to 10 little thrusters are gonna stop a million ton ship in a manner of seconds....

i understand that at warp...the warp core needs to supply constant power to keep the shape of the warp field constant so that they dont slow down...but at sublight speeds, i think that there is a major discrepancy with real science...

    can anyone refute these observations???

  8. Just a serious thought here.

I don't recall seeing any non human drones portrayed except for breif glipses in the background. No Andorians, Tellerites, Gorn, Orions, Klingons Etc. had major screen time.

    Stardate:213937.9

What about that Voyager episode where Janeway,Tuvok, and B'Ellana get assimilated on purpose.B'Ellana had alot of screen time and she's klingon.(well half Klingon anyways)

plus there was that klingon general in unimatrix zero...not to mention the talaxians which "make excellent drones do to their musculature"

  9. The only one I would ever recommend you get is the All In Wonder. ATI has the best on the market. I just upgraded from the All In Wonder Pro 128 to the All In Wonder Radeon 8500. I haven't used any of the record functions yet becasue I'm waiting for a cable that I had to order but I have seen some DVD's that my brother has made with his (he recorded Survivor on his computer then transfered that to a DVD) and it looks great.

Check out EBay when you are ready to buy, I got this one there for $85

bottom line... u can use it like tivo right? i dont have to be home to decide whether to record or not?

  10. ok so im thinking of getting a tv tuner card...ive heard that they can be used in place of TiVo for those of u in the states....but id just like to hear some real user feedback before i chose one from the 50 on the market...some things i have some questions, if anyone knows...is it fully compatible with digital cable? what format are the files stored if i record them to my HD? how much space would they take??

    thanks

  11. Part 2 is actually the prequel.

I always watch them in the order they were made, but I have heard that if you watch them in order :Temple, Crusade, Raiders.

But I could very well be wrong. Crusade could be a prequel as well. (I do not think so though.)

You want a good source with this? Ask Indy. Lol.

i disagree...crusade is the last becuase there is a scene in the sewer where eva notices a pricture of the ark on the wall.. and indy smirks that hes sure that its the ark...

    temple-->ark--->crusade

  12. Well, in theory, the Constitution-class can seperate, using the saucer as an emergency escape vehicle versus escape pods.  However, the stardrive section can be reconnected to the saucer in spacedock.

As for Voyager, I agree, it's a small, solid ship.  As for the Enterprise-E, why couldn't it seperate, eh?  John Eaves had designed the ship to be capable of saucer seperation in case a future movie had called for such an act.  You can clearly see a v-shape seperation line where the engineering hull meets the saucer, making the quantum torpedoe launcher and captain's yacht the front of the battle section.

I tried to find a pic online, but had no luck.  The designer, John Eaves, designed the ship to be "capable" of saucer seperation, but we may never find out.  I allways assumed that if the Enterprise-E could saucer seperate, it would be more of a tactical strength since the battle section has no impulse engine, or possibly in the way of the Constitution-class, jettisonning the stardrive section and flying off to safety.

if memory serves, on the constiution class ships, the impulse exhaust was on the secondary hull...such that in the even of emergency separations, they would be left without propulsion and primary and secondary power...

  13. also ive found that if u do download the torrents client to your computer...as ive set it up for some friends, if u get an error about some temporary files or something like that...clear your temporary internet folder...including all your cookies (i know that sucks) and it should work fine...

  14. i downloaded it last nite and watched it over again...and my initial views on the episode were the same as the first time i saw it....

it was great to see how far a man would go to do what was right. "the good of the many outway the good of the few or the one" now with spock, he sacrificed his life to save the many, but in this episode, we see how far a noble lawabbiding star fleet captain will go to save the many... his actions with all the best intentions were flat out criminal... and yet, to save 500 billion lives in the contrasting side..its interesting to see the inner conflict as sisko is torn between the two...

i like to reserve 10s for the perfect episode, which ive never seen..but 9.5 for this one...next to TNG's inner light, one of the best hours ive ever spent in front of the TV (monitor rather)

  15. my point was not to offend anyone and for that i apologize..i was just expressing a view contrary to cardies.. plus, im not even bajoran, jewish, or korean ..so i didnt even take it personally, its just that i expressed my initial thoughts online before i even processed the fact that hes just in charecter and messing around...

    .

    cheers, next rounds on me

  16. i think that Cardie fan is expressing his / her views deagletime, this is what us in the western world call free speech.  While WE may think this is wrong, as i personally do, Cardie fan may not.  And they may even be just playing in character.  I think it is rude to jump on newbies, or anyone in the public forum, when we have the PM system and Report button.  If you dont like what Cardie fan has to say, there are ways of dealing with it, rather than slandering them on the public front.

well first off ...i never slandered him in any way..i did not use any derogatory terms against him so i dont know where u got that idea from

and secondly every statement i made, i posed in the form of a question...none of which were statements that he should be forced to abide by.. as a fellow american, i am also entitled to free speech...and as such i can state whatever opinions i feel i want to express....however even so, all my statements again were in the form of a question so that he or anyone for that matter could think for themselves whether my questions were true or not...

  17. maybe we are pushing the extremes on what is allowed in these forums..but dont u think that u are believing too much of the cardassian propaganda...i mean seriously...the cardassian-bajoran conflict had similar parallels with the jewish-german holocaust or perhaps the japanese-korean occupation dont u think? bajorans, jews, and koreans were forced to work for no wage, but food stipens in camps that did nothing to educate or prosper those peoples... bajoran, jewish, and korean woman served as "comfort" women for their captors as well....i mean dont u think that you are a out of line to claim such grandiose statements when bajoran-cardassian relations so closely parallels the plight of korean and jewish peoples???

  18. welll if it makes a difference, pretty much all the shows with a considerable online fan base, have the episodes posted online..myself, i download Enterprise episodes on tuesday and decide whether  to watch it again on the live broadcast on wednesday...dont fret, like i said, any show worth watching is online @ www.suprnova.org

Downloading TV shows is very illegal. If you download after watching the broadcast, in the place of a VCR, I see no problem with this, as long as it's for personal use. However, if season sets are out, I would recommend not downloading. Piracy is a very big issue these days. I don't download squat if I can go out and buy the CD/DVD. The only shows I download are those that are current and not on DVD, as I said before, in the place of using a VCR.

Anywho, my advice is to watch on TV with commercials, then download. Otherwise, you're condolling piracy, which is theft.

Yeah, but dled shows tend to suck pretty hard for quality. I doubt anyone who'd consider buying a DVD set would ever be satisfied with dled eps. Your right about it being illegal, but I don't do it just for the quality issue. I happened to see a few dled eps and was so frustrated by it I gave up. I'd rather wait to see it on TV.

regarding the legality of downloading, if i were to record a song off the radio and then put it on my webpage, would that still be considered piracy considering the source.. now if i were to get it off a cd that was paid for and distributed it..that is another case altogether...

the fact that is, tv epsiodes are distributed via radio carrier waves and therfore i think that copying them on my vcr or harddrive and then pasing off to my friends is not a crime...

and yes picture quality does suck, but it beats waiting for the rerun to come back on...and oh yes..i love the fact that i can get enterprise episodes on tuesday afternoon, before syndication on tv
