  1. My question is, if Soong created Data why didn't Data take on his creators name?

Why isn't our Commander Data known to us as Commander Data Soong?

At the time we first see Data, he did not know who his creator was. It was not until the Enterprise crew go to Omicron Theta and discover Soong's lab ("Datalore") that he finds this out. Then of course over the subsequent years he learns more and more about his family.

That is the basic story there, however. Because there are instances where that might not exactly be right, I am trying to remember which episodes exactly but it is alluded to several times throughout the span of the series and I believe the movies as well...that he knew at least a bit about his father prior to the Away Team's discovery of the hidden lab. First off.. Maddox makes mention of studying Soong's research(or something along those lines) and if no one knew who created Data...then just how did Cmdr Maddox know this stuff?? Yes, I know Soong was a respected cyberneticist, so studying his research would not be out of the ordinary for anyone. But I am referring to him studying Soong's research as applied to Data.. and the way that it was said makes me think that Data's parentage was at least vaguely known prior to "Datalore"

I know that his name is "NFN NMN Data". But I have always wondered that, if he wanted to know everything about what it is to be human...why did he not adopt his father's last name as his family name. But then again, he could have also chosen NOT to do so..and that that choice was never mentioned. Either version(Data or Data Soong) sounds fine to me anyways...*shrug* LOL.

  2. How many people have changed their usernames? I used to be "incontinentia", but now I'm "BakulaBabe". It seemed like the right thing to do, and besides, the little voices in my head told me to do it  . Anyone else done it, or thinking of doing it? What name are you thinking of using?

When I joined here I was Yillara_Soong. Then for a period of about 2 or 3 weeks last year I changed it to Yillara_Skye. But, changed it back and it has been Yillara_Soong ever since.

  3. Well.. I guess it could be kind of obvious which one I ended up voting for.

"Datalore" was my choice, though several on the list I wanted to pick. "Skin of Evil" though very, very sad was a very good episode. "The Big Goodbye", "Encounter At Farpoint" and a few others were also up there on the list for me..

 I just realized, with this post I am now on 4300 posts.

  4. All of those are really good ones...except, blue cheese, I do not like that one much at all. LOL, too bad I could not vote for all, or nearly all of them!

I voted for ranch, especially either garlic ranch or white cheddar ranch (really good on cucumber salads :eekout: . Well, or on broccoli, carrots, or on grilled chicken).

Though, Caesar is excellent for salad. As are the others. Italian & Caesar are really good on spinach salad.

And Catalina or French, I usually add when putting toppings on homemade tacos.

When I was little, I would have voted on this poll: THousand Island. I still love that dressing, especially on burgers.

Vinagrette is good too.. for awhile I really liked sun-dried tomato vinagrette. It is still good, just do not like to eat that as much.

  5. They use our present day Naval ranks, correct.

Pretty much, you are correct about the ranks.

As for whether or not Enterprise has become too militaristic, I cannot say as I have not seen beyond the third or fourth episode. (Was not too interested in the series, preferred TNG. I went to give the series another chance, and it was at that point in time that my area stopped having UPN)

I guess the closest thing we have today to Starfleet would be NASA. NASA is part of our military budget. NASA is supposed to be about exploration but a lot of times it has to be involved with work that is directly involved with the DOD. Without that, no funding.
I agree that one could say that NASA is the closest we currently have to Starfleet. Plus many of the astronauts had or have military backgrounds.

  6. I once had a moving avatar for a very short period of time last year.

But have changed my avatar many times since(as well as before the moving one). Currently it is the Crystal Rose card from the game Lost Kingdoms II.

In the past, I have had images of Data, some of my artwork, characters from games I like such as Katia from the game I mentioned earlier, or Din, Nayru, Farore, or Zelda from the Legend of Zelda games. Might change it again..who knows?

  7. does dyslexia only cause reading difficulties, or are there commonly writing or speech problems as well?

It can cause speech and writing problems.

Most of my family have varying degrees of dyslexia, with my little brother being the one who is the highest (the only one in my immediate family that does not have it is my mom).

And thanks for posting that link, Odie. I sent it immediately to my brother, he has been collecting sites on teh subject in the las year or so(he was found out to be a dyslexic when he was about 5 or 6 years old...he is 18 now). And he also sends his thanks :P , he says he will check the link out the next time he is online.

  8. Hmm ok i think it couldnt hurt you to be more like us but on the other hand the world would become a boring place if you did :dude:   :dude: ..you Americans are nuts (i mean that in a nice way)but thats what i love about ya :dude:

Whatever, this is a very general question. The European countries are nationalistic. There really is not a nationality that is American. Americans are all different. We are either immigrants or descendants of immigrants.

Very true. Speaking as a decendant of immigrants(my grandfather on my dad's side was from Norway..and on my mom's side of the family I have relatives that still live in Denmark. And my heritage consists of a total of 9 different countries. ), I can definately agree with what Data is saying.

  9. Now I listen mainly to an oldies (50,60,70) station and the morning DJ's are my favorites. They have a daily segment called "Knuckleheads in the News" which is hysterical.  I can't seem to find a classical station because public radio has gone to "talk" which is so booorrrriinnng.

Yeah, "Knuckleheads in the News" is quite funny(not sure if it is the same one, but it sounds very familiar..I listen to it on the 50's 60's 70's station I listen to as well). Though many times I miss it, it comes on at 8:30am and I am often listening to either another station, a CD or someplace where the radio is not tuned to that station(like a store, for example).

  10. FM for the most part...usually tuned into one of two country stations, one 80's channel, one smooth jazz, one easy listening station, one college radio that mainly broadcasts classical & jazz , one 50's, 60's, 70's station ( :P the two in bold are my favorites to listen to), a hometown station that plays 80's to 2000's music(only stop to listen if a song I like comes on...and on that station it is few and far between), another hometown station but only when they play classical, jazz or world music. I like a lot of different music...and when the commercials come on, it is so easy to change the channel.

Oh and yeah, though it is tough to get on my radio since the signal is not that strong...between Thanksgiving and Christmas day, there is a channel that goes from playing rock music...to playing Christmas music 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And I tune in every once and awhile, that is, when I am not listening to the collection of tunes that I have on CD.

AM - I listen to one mainly when my alma mater is playing a football game(since my brother and sister played in the marching band, and I personally like football...and the last couple of years the varsity squad was kicking some butt, undefeated last year  . My brother graduates in about a week, but I may still tune in from time to time if I feel like catching a football game). I also listen to a station when there was a scheduled space shuttle launch, since they broadcast the countdown, info on the current mission as well as the launch...so I would often listen as I watched.

Similar to the shuttle launch...the 50's-70's station I mentioned earlier, they are the ones who do a live broadcast of all Jacksonville Jaguars football games..so I tune in for that as well. Sometimes, I mute the TV and listen to the game via the radio while watching the TV ( sometimes the radio has better coverage of the game, and then of course you can catch some of what goes on while tv commercials are going on)

Also, I would sometimes listen to some music that was broadcasted on AOL Radio.

THis is pretty much the same whether or not I am in the car..though I have a ton of CD's of various types of music that I am constantly listening to...that is, when I am not choosing to hear the peaceful sound of silence.

  11. So, who's going to be seeing the movie next month?
Maybe. I am not sure yet.

Did you watch the cartoon series when it aired on CBS?

Yes I did, as well as the holiday specials. Matter of fact, I still have a Christmas Cartoon video which includes Garfield's Christmas (this video also had Mickey's Christmas Carol, A Charlie Brown's Christmas, and Claymation's Christmas...only sad thing is I may have to rerecord these if they come back to tv since that video I have is over 10 years old).

Do you read the comic strips in the news paper or on the official website?

I read his comic strip in the newspaper, most weekends(only get the paper on Friday, Saturday and Sunday..since my mom and I tend to go to the newspaper's internet site instead to read the news). Garfield is one of my favorite classic comic strips, besides Peanuts. Many of the others are funny/good...but those two are the best overall, IMO.

  12. THanks Fenriz.

here was the top 10 the year I was born(1980)

    1. Call Me, Blondie

    2. Another Brick In The Wall, Pink Floyd

    3. Magic, Olivia Newton-John

    4. Rock With You, Michael Jackson

    5. Funkytown, Lipps, Inc.

    6. Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Queen

    7. It's Still Rock And Roll To Me, Billy Joel

    8. Do That To Me One More Time, Captain & Tennille

    9. Coming Up, Paul McCartney

    10. The Rose, Bette Midler

some of the songs on that list are pretty good... though I prefer the songs on some of the other lists, mainly the 50's and 60's.

  13. I'd love to hear some of the songs that were popular the year I was born. Is there somewhere on the Web where you can find out? O.K., if you can find out, put up the top 5, ok, and then tell me where to go  :P  I don't mean it like that :P  :P

Hmm, you could always search Billboard charts. I am sure they have stuff online to search.

EDIT: though it seems if you go to Billboard.com you can only access stuff if you are a subscriber.

  14. Glasses since I was 11, though I have contemplated contacts from time to time. Though....

Since I was about 13 or 14 the eye doctor had said I should actually get bifocals, since I need glasses for distances and for reading (plus I have an astigmatism). Then, the doctors turn around and keep holding off, mainly because of my age   Geez, they give me a presciption for glasses and reading glasses but are hellbent and determined to not give me bifocals (no matter how many times I ask). One of these days I will win that argument...I swear! So getting contacts might be out of the question.

I end up just getting my regular glasses, and then buy a cheap pair of reading glasses. Though I mainly wear my regular glasses even for reading(LOL, that is when I am not going without either pair of glasses).

Get a different opinion. This is your vision! If you need bifocals that mean YOU NEED BIFOCALS. Your age dose not matter. The doctor you're see is doing you no favors. I also believe you doctor is trying to get more money out you. Bifocals are not cheap, but it more expense to buy to pair of glasses than one.

Funniest thing is, Odie...that this has been three different doctors that have done that. They are just determined that you have to be closer to your 40's before you get bifocals(I turned 24 on Monday).

Otherwise, you are very much correct. It is my vision, and do have the right to a second opinion(same with any situation where a doctor is needed). As well as the fact taht it is very apparent that they wish to try and make a little extra money by trying to get me to purchase two pairs of glasses (they have not, and will not win that fight)

  15. I'd just like to point out that Data is an Operations officer, not science. He was originally intended to be but the blue clashed with the make-up.

    I'd go with Data anyway.

    Data's Bio, from ST.com

Actually in the bio that I posted above, he is said to be the Science/Second officer. True his station was at Ops as well. I have heard him referred to by all three titles. Science Officer, Operations Officer, and Second Officer.

  16. Gosh he looks different

Funniest thing is, he appeared on Cheers in 1987. Which of course was the same year that TNG started.

As for recognizing him...definately could in no time flat ;)

I remember him on Night Court, and he was quite amusing. He actually almost became a regular on that show, but ended up deciding to take the job on TNG instead ( :naughty: no complaints here.. lol)

I read this in the book The Finest Crew in the Fleet.

  17. 10. Britain has actually won a medal at the Winter Olympics (or any Olympics for that matter!)

Ummm, Jane Torvill & Christopher Dean. Figure Skating(Ice Dance)

    1st, 1984 Olympic Games - Sarajevo

    3rd, 1994 Olympic Games - Lillehammer

That is one example right off the top of my head..

    This link could help...

Britains Olympic Medal Winners over history

    5. Brent Spiner's album 'Ol Yellow Eyes is Back' stays at number one of the Billboard Album charts for ten months.

Oh, I can agree with THIS one!! :wow:

AH, a good one at least IMO

THe Jacksonville Jaguars have not only a winning season, but make it to the Super Bowl and win it this year on home turf!!

It could happen.....maybe in a parallel universe, but it could happen. Sorry, JAX is basically the hometown team for me..the city is just to the north of my hometown, and I also went to school there for about a year and a half.

  18. Finally Brent will come at an convention!! He will participate to the convention of Las Vegas, at the end of July, and he will also make the autographs to the fans!

    Oh, cool

It would be really neat to get to meet Brent in person. Maybe one day he will do a convention closer to my home, since Vegas is a bit too expensive a trip for me right now. Not really "a bit" too expensive, more like a LOT too expensive.
