  1. I've seen a partial solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse, meteor showers, and a comet. They were all very cool. I should really get myself a telescope one of these days.

Right now I have two scopes.. both were ones I had gotten for Christmas.

At age 5 I got a small refracting scope from my grandparents(as well as that year, and for several years later many of my relatives got me field guides, star charts and other astronomy related books. ) The scope is a little dinged up, but still works pretty good. I recently used it to try and get a view of NEAT. But the scope was a bit weak to get a good view.

My scope I used for most of the stellar/planetary phenomenon I have seen, is my Meade 6" Newtonian reflector. Which I got at age 10 from my mom & dad. It is an awesome scope!!

Astronomy magazine is holding a contest in this month's issue. Grand prize, 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes are all varying types of scopes(all with electronic locator devices installed, as far as I can remember). And 4th prize is a pair of really rather good binoculars. You could always check and see if there is information about the contest on their website, or pick up this months issue (it is advertised in the top left hand corner of the cover.)

I might enter it, just for the fun of it.

THen there are many sites you can check out when you are searching for a scope.. I personally like the Meade/Celestron brand(as that is the brand of my current scope), but many others are quite high quality.

    A couple are:

    Astronomics

    Meade.com

    Celestron

    Orion is pretty good too...

    Orion

I hope these links help anyone interested in getting a telescope :o

  2. As always, I look forward to some good storms this year. I always enjoy the storms themselves though as many of you remember from last year I hate the week long power outages lol.

As do I. I am hoping for a good, and yet safe Hurricane season. I love storms, except for the destruction they cause.

As always, if there is a chance of a tropical storm in my area(or a minor hurricane) coming in from the Atlantic.. I will more than likely to be found at the sea wall, enjoying the wind and waves and watching the beautiful cloud formations that are so unique(or possible just obvious) from the bands of the storm.

True as it approaches land, I do have the common sense to come indoors..well, after I get to walk around during minor squall lines that is. The wind and rain is awesome...that is until you get smacked in the head with a flying/falling pinecone. Ouch, not very pleasant..just about as unpleasant as getting pelted with hail :look: .

Tornadoes are not too bad around here, but we do get them and water spouts from time to time(not to mention microbursts). But usually deal with tropical storms, outer bands of hurricanes(with some coming quite close to shore, and rarely ever hit), thunderstorms that become quite serious lightning storms. Nor'easterns are pretty prevalent here too..

  3. Too bad I live in Houston...

Lot's of smog, clouds, heat, mosquitoes, humidity, and light prevent me from seeing anything and my mom won't let me get a telescope...

    :look:

    awww, darn. :look:

Maybe someday you will be able to get a scope. Either that, or there is another option (as long as it is ok by your mom, that is)...when there are stellar events going to occur, a lot of times local astronomy clubs or museums offer the public a chance to view them. You can always check in your hometown to see if there are any.

For example, when I was 5 I saw Halley's at both a museum, and via the local Astronomy Club's meeting. In the case of the club, members who had scopes set them up...so you could view the comet and other night sky objects in a wide variety of scopes.

  4.

I get to list them!! Great thread, I have been keeping a list of stellar/astronomical events I have seen over my lifetime, and plan to do so until I die. I have loved astronomy since I was about 2 or 3.

    -Many many meteor showers

-The Lyrid Meteor Storm (I saw over 250 in an hour, I long to see another of those storms happen...just awesome!)

-A curly cue meteor, during the Orionids when I was about 10.. one meteor spiralled in an almost complete circle. Very cool

-A couple of fireball meteors. Extremely bright and extremely large meteor. One of which streaked almost completely across the sky going from a reddish purple to bright white to a beautiful shade of green.

    -Many eclipses solar & lunar.

    -Venus transist the sun

-"String of Pearls" comet Shoemaker Levy 9 hit Jupiter. I actually watched what was later determined to be the largest chunk strike, and that was fragment "C"

-Halley's Comet. I had a t-shirt from the event that I so loved. And eventually wore out, but recently after a ton of searching I found the picture that was featured on it and replaced my shirt!!! (see the attached pic, I believe that was originally from an 1835 French newspaper talking about Halley's. I could be wrong on the year though)

    - Hale Bopp, Hyakutaki, NEAT comets

    -The ISS passover.

-Have viewed Venus in several phases. Saturn, Jupiter(plus Galilean Moons), tried to catch Mercury before it set not too successful. Of course as well as checking out the Orion & Crab Nebulas.

  5. Sorry Guys.  The comet visible in the morning sky through binoculars in the Southern Hemisphere and Northern Hemisphere is Comet Linear.   This little puppy got too excited!

    *sigh* :laugh::hug: So not fair....

It is just I was reading an article in an issue of Astronomy, and it listed all of the great comets of the 20th & 21st centuries. It seemed like all the REALLY good ones are visible in the southern hemisphere. By the time they are visible in the N. Hemi. they are just fuzzy dots. Really good meaning, more than one in the last century were above a -5 magnitude. One of which was a -15 or -17 :) To see a comet with a beautiful tail in broad daylight must have been quite an amazing site.

True, the views here of Hyakutake & Hale Bopp were beyond awesome. Tail visible w/out telescope or binoculars...and truly beautiful in my 6" reflecting scope

As for LINEAR & NEAT, they were kind of a bust here. When it was not overcast or stormy here, they were kind of fuzzy, not very bright...and in order for me to see it better I needed my scope, but I did not use it because for me to get a clear view of that area of the sky I would have needed to put my scope in the middle of my street! Not a good idea at all, especially since my street is kind of dark(only one street light, well two the other is buried in trees), my scope is dark and a bit heavy to quickly be able to move(so someone driving might not see it very easily even if I am wearing light colored clothes, and some idiots like to drive in the neighborhood at high speeds with their lights off! Not safe at all.

But, I did find a pretty pic on a site of comet NEAT, and that is what my current avatar has been for a while

  6. Did anyone happen to watch the Transit of Venus?  We had a good view from here!

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was beautiful!!! The conditions were perfect from where I was.

Venus Transist PhotosThis site's link I found and originally posted in one of my astronomy related threads over at Bodacious Freddy's (Data's message board that I mod at)

so I figured I would share it here too

I have a couple of astronomy links posted in a links thread over at Freddy's as well, one of which is Astronomy.com's site.

This was an excellent idea for a thread starsinmyeyes. So, if I miss anything that was not posted at Astronomy's site or sent to me in an AOL alert(a cool AOL feature that will alert you to an Sky related event)...I can check here.

  7. lore was also deactivated in season ? in TNG..

    Season 7 Premire.

    Season 7, Descent Part II

    Ok...

First there were 2 or 3(if you do not count B4 as one of these) failed prototypes

    Then,

    B4 - prototype

Lore - deactivated finally in Descent, Part II by Data

    Data

Lal - Data's daughter, died at the age of about 3 weeks old due to complete cascade failure.

then there is Dr. Juliana O' Donnell Soong Tainer - Originally human, but after an injury she slipped into a coma and soon after died. Soong transfered her memories into an android more advanced than Data. She appeared to be human to pretty much everyone, even to herself.

I do not think I am missing anyone who is a Soong-type android, I think I named them all.

  8. Publix Deli for subs

They just opened a Quiznos here but I haven't tried it yet

But my favorite fast food is take out Chinese.  Cashew Chicken

Oh yeah, Publix has some great subs!! My favorite two are Roast Beef and Philly Cheese ( I have mushrooms added instead of peppers, since I do not like much green peppers in my sub. I will eat them, but if I get the option..I will have them removed)

Larry's Giant Subs (best subs: Philly Cheese and Meatball) and Subway(best sub: Sweet Onion Chicken Terriyaki) are pretty good too.

And yeah, Chinese is always an excellent take out meal! China One, here in town, is an excellent resteraunt. I order different things from time to time, but they have awesome crab rangoons, egg drop soup, and terriyaki beef strips for starters!

True, from a different resteraunt(though not predominantly a take out, it is a buffet) I really like the fact that they have Mongolian Barbeque, which I have liked since I was really really little. And a friend of mine, suggested one of his favorites..and I discovered that I liked General Tso's Chicken a lot.

So from Chinese resteraunts in town, there are a ton of excellent choices.

Ok this thread is driving me nuts, I just got back from getting food at Taco Bell only about 2 hours ago.....and now.........

    I AM HUNGRY AGAIN!!!

McGriddles, the breakfast of Champions and Military officers!
ROFL!! I have eaten at McD's a few times, and that is one sandwich I have not tried. Probably because though I like pancakes and eggs, I do not like them very much mixed together (and the McGriddle is similar to a pancake, for those who do not know).

  9. Other.

    I like Taco Bell & Arby's a lot!

McD's is ok... I like a few items on their menus. Used to eat at Burger King, but pretty much never now(a couple of bad experiences with the food at one of the ones in my hometown). KFC is pretty good.

Our town just got a Sonic, and they are excellent! I love the fact that it is an old style drive in(complete with rollerskating waiters/waitresses)! Soon we will be getting an Arby's, and I have heard that we'll be getting a Popeye's too(which is cool, because I have not been to one in a very long time). Checkers is good too.

  10. Though I have not watched much of ANY of the series(only a couple of episodes), I think there should be ENT questions that way people who prefer that series over the others, or only have seen ENT can have questions to answer

**I do not get UPN here.

And since I have not seen much of ENT, I stick to answering the TNG questions first and foremost...then movies & TOS next, then those DS9 or VOY questions that contain stuff I have seen(which is not much) or have read about.

  11. I do not have a particular favorite brand, and I do not eat chips much at all.

I love nacho Doritos (and Ranch..but not as much. Yeah I know those are corn chips). I also like the Sour Cream & Cheddar Ruffles chips, Sour Cream Sun Chips(those are not potato chips..but I like them almost better than any other chip), Pringles(Ranch or Sour Cream & Onion).

I also like Seneca brand Baked Sweet Potato chips(the cinnamon variety). I saw these in the grocery store last week and had to try them, they are pretty darned good.

Seneca also makes many varieties of baked apple chips: If the store had them, I really wanted to try the Honey apple ones. But I settled for the kind I like a lot and that is the Caramel Apple. Cinnamon apple is good too.

  12. Sweet. Either candied or baked with brown sugar(or cinnamon) and butter, and sometimes add a little melted marshmallow

During Thanksgiving, if my family has baked sweet potatoes and we have leftovers, I will stuff the potato with brown sugar, butter and shredded up turkey.

Then new potatoes: sliced and fried or grilled in garlic butter.

white potatoes.. baked and/or stuffed. If it is stuffed... broccoli & cheese.

  13. To watch: Football(NFL), Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Figure Skating(men's, women's, pairs, ice dance).

Have participated in competitively: Gymnastics(20 years total, 12 competitively)

Football (Powder Puff footbal, Defensive tackle. Seniors- C/O '98, aka my class Versus Juniors C/O '99. I also was going to be the punter and kicker if they did punting, field goals and kickoffs...but they decided not to have that :) oh well)

Volleyball - Competed in a tournament in elementary school, plus played it throughout school as a part of PE.

Non competitively: Ice Skating- skated twice in my life, if there was a rink closer I really wanted to do figure skating and/or speed skating alongside my competitive gymnastics career.

    Badminton - at home

    Soccer - in school

    Swimming

Diving - 1m & 3m springboards. I wanted to compete in college, but ended up not joining the team because of cost & time constraints (I was commuting 45 minutes one way to school...that does get pricey after a short while). But I had been diving a bit since I was about 10.

This is a long list but there are a lot of sports that I like to watch or participate in.

Above all the rest I will always like Gymnastics and Football as my favorite sports. With Figure & Speed skating, volleyball & diving a close second

  14. So, what's to stop UPN from giving us 20 episodes for season five and 18 episodes for season six? <_<

    Wait and see, CJLP.

I really do not like Enterprise being on UPN to begin with. Things were so much better when the Treks were in syndication. There are survices that do not even offer UPN. That is part of the reason for the lack of ratings.

Exactly, Data. Unless they recently changed it, my area does not carry UPN. Programming for UPN is shown on FOX after all of FOX's prime time shows are played.

I was not much into Enterprise when it first started. I liked the first two episodes a bit, but lost interest in the next couple... however, I wanted to give the show another chance like I did to DS9 and VOY(though I never watched those even after giving them another chance...maybe an episode or two here and there. TNG was the only one that I watched in its entirety first run. TOS, I caught most of when it went into reruns). But was unable to do so because UPN was pulled.

  15. For people that may not be aware of what Memorial Day is here in the United States, it's a day to remember and honor our soldiers that have died in the line of duty.

Thanks VBG. It was a great tribute.

My dad is a retired disabled veteran. And my grandfather(my mother's side) flew & and saw action in WWII (he passed away 10 years ago on July 11th <_< ).

  16. every outdoor plant in Florida

    Really, UH??

I am sure you have probably seen this too.. the green pollen that blankets everything in (especially) the early spring.

<_< The stuff that you run your car through a car wash, and then a half a day to a day later you need to wash your car again because it has coated it again.

It is about the same time that that stuff starts appearing that I will have at least one minor cold (probably is more like allergies, who knows?)

  17. I'm severly allergic to Mosquito and other bug bites...

    What about you?

I have a severe skin allergy to vinegar (mainly anything with Acetic acid in it...or acetate in general. So no Vitamin E on my skin either- it is tocopheryl acetate). It burns my skin. It stinks because I like ketchup, and tomato sauces and those have vinegar in it. So when I eat that stuff I have to be very very careful. I can eat the stuff, but cannot get it on my skin is all.

Ammonia bothers my skin almost in the same way vinegar does. And if I ever have to have another surgical proceedure done, I cannot let the nurses or surgeon use betadine (an iodine based antiseptic). I had a reaction similar to what I have happen if vinegar gets on my skin.

THose are the severe ones.. less severe is:

-Cigarette smoke - and my dad refuses to ever quit smoking <_<

-Chalk dust (similar reason to the smoke...but it has to be a large amount of dust before it bothers me. And as a former upper level gymnast, I have been around lots and lots of chalk dust.)

-And apparently bee or wasp stings, I never was allergic before. But in the last couple of years I have been stung and had a pretty bad reaction to them. Not anaphylatic shock..not that severe, but bad reactions nonetheless.

-And certain perfumes or colognes can irritate me.. make my eyes burn and water, and make me sneeze.

-Medication wise... I usually try my best to avoid medications taht contain antihistamines.
