Yes either that, soong_girl, or Geordi's commanding officers were quite tough towards promotions, think about it in the short time we've gotten to see him he was Lt(j.g.), then Lt., and now Lt. Commander. He moved up rank pretty fast on the Enterprise, which always seemed like a firendly environment. Hey, he moved up rank, kinda like us. . .we're in a friendly environment and look at us!

Thanks again everyone. But no commander for me yet. I wont get promoted until Data is!! (oh no, thinking about Nemesis again)Lords, don't make us Soongs cry again! I think you'll get promoted again soon, so don't worry! And I still don't think it was fair that Data was never promoted until. . .well never promoted ("trying not to think of that nightmare", *shakes head*-"trying to get rid of that nightmare!").
Anyway, congrats again, sister!

I know this is slightly off topic. but I gotta ask
OK, ensign beedrill, what was the inspiration for your screen name?

Frank Zappa, is great... Songs like Dumb All Over , My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama , Zoot Allures, Disco Boy , Valley Girl , Fem Bot In A Wet T-Shirt Contest, and so many more all have great sardonic wit and brilliant compostions too... How anyone couldnt' like him beyond me.Well, to each his/her own as the saying goes. Actually of Dr. Demento's collection I really like Wierd Al's stuff, as well as Tom Lehrer and Spike Jones. Also a large amount of great comedy songs come from the Smother's Brothers- of their stuff, Marching To Pretoria, Chocolate, Hangman, and The Slithery Dee are the best! Especially, "Pretoria" :) :) !

The Ten Forward section seems to be a good place for miscellaneous Trek discussions, and Off Topic rarely even mentions Trek at all. So I do not think it is really necessary to combine them.

Carpal tunnel, the curse of the information age.....How true. I type for a living too. Between carpal tunnel and eye strain from staring at a computer all day... I still love computers though.
Definately true, my classes I took/will take has me typing every single lab report, and my job has me typing a whole lot more recently. I have a slight disability of left wrist/elbow and with typing (or playing my clarinet or doing gymnastics) it definately gets pretty bad at times. Like some, I wear a brace whenever the pain gets to me, and in the case of when I was little. . .I was left handed until the injury, I was forced to become right-handed.
VaBeachGuy, I hope you wrist heals soon, and I hope that it doesn't require surgery.

I'll never understand how "the brain" didn't get promoted ahead of Riker (Yeah he seems sorta the "bad boy" type!). I mean most of the time it works the other way.
-
I personally dont think that McCoy was ever prejudiced against Spock either, it was just a little banter. It was howlz how they treated each other....
Like my god,, and they never took any of it seriously..
If TOS didn;t have them.. then it owuldn;t hacve been funny..
~Lauren
I didn't watch much of TOS, but from what I did see, you are right!

Another Riker episode I liked from that season was Schisms. The idea of alien abductions on Star Trek is fascinating. And of course it gave us that poetic masterpiece "Ode to Spot" too.Yeah, and then his poem revisits everyone again in "Fistful of Datas", I still love that. . . I mean that Riker had to say several lines of the poem.
As for the listeners being rude to Data, I guess it would get tiresome to hear so many poems. . .but, there was NOTHING wrong with his poem (OK, so maybe that is just me there). I thought it was good, vastly better than any of MY attempts at poetry  !

I wouldn't call them an acquired taste except that you could say that about all music. Some of the songs could be called good drinking songs but I don't drink either. They are hugely popular across Canada. Here is a link to a page on their website where you can listen to some clips of songs from their latest release.I haven't heard much Dr. Demento but I did download that clip Picard at McDonald's with Brent Spiner's Patrick Stewart imitation. That was hilarious!!!
I kept seeing that when I was searching for music once, now I gotta downlowd that one (Picard at McDonalds)!
As for the person who asked about Frank Zappa, no I don't usually follow his stuff but, Dancin' Fool is kinda funny in a weird way.

Well, jdigs. . .I don't drink. . . .but I still wish to see for myself. As I said before, I like a wide variety of music. . .although I tend to stay away from: rap, heavy metal, grunge rock, and most alternative.
So I am still going to check them out! I am sure they are not JUST a get drunk and listen to them band, right soong_girl???
As for aquired tastes in music. . . . .
Hey, one of my current types of music I really like is music from certain anime series. . .particularly Inu-Yasha (my brother watches the show, and he introduced me to the world anime music). To the point that I have very quickly learned to sing in JAPANESE! I particularly like "Every Heart" and "No More Words".
And another type I have been a fan of for a long while is the soundtracks from Cirque Du Soleil, I have pretty much all of their CD's and have almost all of the videos of the shows! I love to sing along to several of the songs, ALL in various foreign languages. So I have also learned to sing songs in French, Spanish, Latin, Italian, ect. ect.
And I won't even GO into the fact that I am a Dr. Demento fan!
So BELIEVE me when I say I am open to listen to various styles of music, OK so I learned that from the fact that I come from a musical family.

I LOVED X-Men! I can't wait till the next movie comes out. Master of Disguise was really wierd. The only time I think I will watch that one again is when I don't want to think. And that's only when I'm sick of Big Trouble (really random and funny!).Yeah, normally I am not a comic book/comic book-tuned movie fan, but X-Men is REALLY rather good! My brother just got the X-Men 1.5 DVD, and that is really good too!
-
I'm looking forward to the new X-Men movie coming out in May.The special edition version of Independence Day is better. It is called the gold star or 5 star edition or something. The special edition has some extra scenes involving Dr Okun
I siad it on the other boards, now I will say it here....I GOTTA GET THAT SPECIAL EDITION ID4 DVD!!! A chance to see more of Brent? Now this I have to see, his scene was too short in my opinion. Now, I must confess I haven't read up on this, but my brother said he read somewhere that there is a sequel to ID4, and that Dr. Okun isn't really dead, so Brent would be back in the film!
Hey I thought of another Trek actor in a Non Trek film that I liked . . . Denise Crosby (Pet Cemetary-even though I liked the book version better, and Deep Impact)
-
Thnaks! I really didn't know that, hmm...the things we learn each and every day. I do think the fake klingon in the video release was an excellent twist in the plot though, maybe I should rent that movie again. . .just to check it out ( I haven't seen it since it first was brought out to video!)

I had no idea Laforge and Riker graduated the same year. It makes you wonder how well Geordi did at the academy. In Encounter at Farpoint Riker was a Comander and First Officer of the Federations flagship and Geordi was a lowly Lt. Jr. Grade! It's not un common in school settings for those who are at the top of their class to not pay that much attintion to those at the bottom.. But then again how do you forget a guy with a visor! That is a good question, when I got the Star Trek Chronology and noticed that Geordi and Riker were at the Academy at the same time, I had to wonder why Geordi was only a Lt.(j.g.), when Riker was a commander. I could figure why they may have never met, since the Academy IS a school. . .but you do have an excellent question and that could keep this thread going on longer!

Then I guess that I am the second.....Hello!

Welcome 8247! I am a refugee from ST.com, like my other Soong sisters (soong_girl, dsbs, and Lessa_Soong), we have had a great time in the last week here and three of us have been promoted to Lt. Commander in no time! So I think that you'll like it here. . . and the Off Topics Discussions are really great!

Thanks vcoolio and everyone!
-
Congratulations, vcoolio!
-
I was going to post when our sister told me you had been promoted, but your promotion notice didn't appear here until after I went to sleep. SOOOOO....
CONGRATULATIONS SISTER  !!!!!!!

Happy birthday vcoolio!

Maybe I have already heard them? I don't know, but I am a fan of Celtic styles of music. I am part Irish, Welsh and Scottish. . .just to name a small part of my heritage(8 in total, possibly 9 different nationalities). So, I will definately check them out!
-
Ya, I was about to say - has anyone noticed how many people were born 2002? Me included.Guess I could put that as my year, but then again I am still not sure. . .put my real year or put a fake year, hmmmm

I'm glad they are not re-editing the scenes into the movie. I wish they would include the extended reception scene so we could hear of Blue Skies at the reception. How about a bonus music video or something. :unsure:I have a problem with re-editing scenes into Star Trek movies because of canon problems. Would the theatrical release be canon or would things that are in the DVD be canon? You know how some DVDs (like Independence Day) had both the theatrical version and a special edition version. Maybe with Star Trek movies they could have a canon version and a non-canon version. :)
Did you see Star Trek VI in the theater by any chance? I saw it twice and when I got the video it totally took me by surprise. Making Corlnel West the assasin dressed up in Klingon make-up totally put a new twist on the story. It was a good twist but it was just wierd that it wasn't in the theater.
I didn't even know that was not in the original, maybe that was because I didn't see it in the theaters. Wow, who was the assasin in the theatrical version?

I don't remember it word for word, and I planned not to look in my novel to "cheat", a good scene with great lines was the scene with Data and Picard discussing how B4 and Shinzon were like them, but not. . .because they(B4 & Shinzon) didn't asspire to become better than they are.
