So, what's your favorite Patriotic song? With Canada Day being today, and Independance Day being Monday, I figured this would be a good question to pose. I am not picky if it's American or Canadian, since both are celebrating national holidays this weekend.
Mine is definately Billy Ray Cyrus' "Some Gave All"
By the way, the radio station in my area is doing the top 5 Patriotic Songs in Chicagoland. Here's what they are...
5. Billy Ray Cyrus "Some Gave All"
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «I knew a man called him Sandy KaneFew folks even knew his name
But a hero was he
Left a boy, came back a man
Still many just don't understand
About the reasons we are free
I can't forget the look in his eyes
Or the tears he cries
As he said these words to me
All gave some and some gave all
And some stood through for the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall
Some gave all
Now Sandy Kane is no longer here
But his words are oh so clear
As they echo through out our land
For all his friends who gave us all
Who stood the ground and took the fall
To help their fellow man
Love your country and live with pride
And don't forget those who died America can't you see
All gave some and some gave all
And some stood through for the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall
Some gave all
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall, yes recall
Some gave all
Some gave all
4. Lee Greenwoord "God Bless the USA"
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my lifeAnd I had to start again with just my children and my wife
I'd thank my lucky stars to be livin' here today
Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can't take that away
And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend her still today.
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA.
From the lakes of Minnesota to the hills of Tennessee
Across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea
From Detroit down to Houston, and New York to LA
Well there's pride in every American heart
And its time we stand and say:
That I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend her still today.
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA.
3. John Micheal Montgomery "Letters from Home"
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «My Dear Son, it is almost June,I hope this letter catches up to you, and finds you well.
Its been dry but they're calling for rain,
And everything's the same ol' same in Johnsonville.
Your stubborn 'ol Daddy ain't said too much,
But I'm sure you know he sends his love,
And she goes on,
In a letter from home.
I hold it up and show my buddies,
Like we ain't scared and our boots ain't muddy, and they all laugh,
Like there's something funny bout' the way I talk,
When I say: "Mama sends her best y'all."
I fold it up an' put it in my shirt,
Pick up my gun an' get back to work.
An' it keeps me driving me on,
Waiting on letters from home.
My Dearest Love, its almost dawn.
I've been lying here all night long wondering where you might be.
I saw your Mama and I showed her the ring.
Man on the television said something so I couldn't sleep.
But I'll be all right, I'm just missing you.
An' this is me kissing you:
XX's and OO's,
In a letter from home.
I hold it up and show my buddies,
Like we ain't scared and our boots ain't muddy, and they all laugh,
'Cause she calls me "Honey", but they take it hard,
'Cause I don't read the good parts.
I fold it up an' put it in my shirt,
Pick up my gun an' get back to work.
An' it keeps me driving me on,
Waiting on letters from home.
Dear Son, I know I ain't written,
But sittin' here tonight, alone in the kitchen, it occurs to me,
I might not have said, so I'll say it now:
Son, you make me proud.
I hold it up and show my buddies,
Like we ain't scared and our boots ain't muddy, but no one laughs,
'Cause there ain't nothing funny when a soldier cries.
An' I just wipe me eyes.
I fold it up an' put it in my shirt,
Pick up my gun an' get back to work.
An' it keeps me driving me on,
Waiting on letters from home.
2. Trace Adkins "Arlington"
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «I never thought that this is where i'd settle down,I thought i'd die an old man back in my hometown,
They gave me this plot of land, me and some other men, for a job well done,
there's a big white house sits on a hill just up the road,
the man inside he cried the day they brought me home,
they folded up a flag and told my mom and dad, we're proud of your son
Chorus:
And I'm proud to be on this peaceful peice of property,
I'm on sacred ground and i'm in the best of company,
I'm thankful for those things i've done,
I can rest in peice, I'm one of the chosen ones, I made it to Arlington
I remember daddy brought me here when i was eight,
we searched all day to find out where my granddad lay,
and when we finally found that cross,
he said, "son this is what it cost to keep us free" Now here i am,
a thousand stones away from him,
he reconized me on the first day i came in,
and it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels, and saluted me.
(Repeat Chorus)
and everytime i hear twenty-one guns,
i know they brought another hero home to is
we're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done,
we can rest in peace, 'cause we are the chosen ones,
we made it to arlington, yea dust to dust,
don't cry for us,w e made it to arlington
1. Toby Keith "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue"
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «American girls and American guys, will always stand up and salute. We'll always recognize, when we see ol' glory flying,
There's a lot of men dead,
So we can sleep in peace at night when we lay down our heads.
My daddy served in the army where he lost his right eye,
But he flew a flag out in our yard 'til the day that he died.
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me.
To grow up and live happy in the land of the free.
Now this nation that I love is fallin' under attack.
A mighty sucker-punch came flying in from somewhere in the back.
Soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye,
Man, we lit up your world like the fourth of July.
Hey, Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist.
And the eagle will fly and it's gonna be hell,
When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell.
And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you.
Ah, brought to you, courtesy of the red, white and blue.
Instrumental break.
Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage:
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage.
An' you'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A.
'Cos we'll put a boot in your *buttocks*, it's the American way.
Oh, oh.
Of the red, white and blue.
Oh, hey, oh.
Of my Red, White and Blue.
Here's some more patriotic songs for you guys...
Lonestar-Somebody's Someone
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «Turn to the six o'clock news, another soldier dies
Tried to hide it but I couldn't help it, I had to cry
When my little boy asked me daddy was he your friend
I said no, I didn't even know him
But he was somebody's someone, a neighbor, a husband
A brother, a father, and a mother's only son
He was an uncle, a cousin, somebody's best friend
And I'm sure at times a shoulder to lean on
He was somebody's someone
So I sat there in that chair and helped him understand
How this brave young man gave his life for our land
And although he's someone we'll never know
To you and me he is a hero
He was somebody's someone, a neighbor, a husband
A brother, a father, and a mother's only son
He was an uncle, a cousin, somebody's best friend
And I'm sure at times a shoulder to lean on
He was somebody's someone
To the world he was a total stranger
Who kept us safe and out of danger
But now he's just a picture on TV
Somebody's memory
He was somebody's someone, a neighbor, a husband
A brother, a father, and a mother's only son
He was an uncle, a cousin, somebody's best friend
And I'm sure at times a shoulder to lean on
He was somebody's someone
He was somebody's someone
Josh Gracin-The other Little Soldier
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «He used to play in daddy's uniform
With the stripes across the sleeve
And he knew when he was all grown up
What he was gonna be
He used to like to ambush every careless cat or dog
That had the nerve to cross the battle lines he had drawn
And even though he didn't know
What his dad was fighting for
He was proud to be the other little soldier
In this war
The phone rang in the middle of the night
When they called his dad to go
Kissed him and his mom goodbye
And said God I love you both
Now I know that it's a lot to ask of such a little man
But hold the fort and
I'll be home as quickly as I can
And even though he didn't know
What his dad was fighting for
He was proud to be the other little soldier
In this war
A wall cannot begin to hold
The names of all the kids
Who gave the great sacrifice
That any child could give
It was the first time he had ever seen
A flag from up that close
And he watched them as
They folded it so careful and so slow
As they gave it to his mother
He knew what he should do
He raised his little hand and
Gave his Dad one last solute
And even though he didn't know
What his dad was fighting for
He was proud to be the other little soldier
He was proud to be the other little soldier
In this war

That first picture is right on the money. the local Country Station was playing Big and Rich's new song, 8th of November, and listening to it, I couldn't help thinking about How many young men that first verse applies to...
"Said goodbye to his mama,
as he left South Dakota,
to fight for the red, white and blue.
He was 19 and green,
with a new M-16,
Just doin' what he had to do...."
Every day for me really is memorial day. I'll hear a song that will get me thinking about someone I met while I was in Iraq who didn't come home, and I really don't watch the news much anymore, because honestly I cry everytime I hear about another casualty. I can't help but think that it could have been me. And I think about the families. Every soldier deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and anywhere else for that matter has a family. To the average American, he's just another soldier, but to somebody, somewhere, he or she is someone. Lonestar has a great song on one of their CD's called "Somebody's Someone" which really expresses what I mean...

Possibly, probably including the bush pilots who make their living flying people and supplies in and out of remote areas. That is a fairly dangerous job.

I think that drivers-sales workers probably consists of food delivery guys. Driving is dangerous. These guys drive for a living, and drive more than your average person. They HAVE to drive in bad weather, when the drunks are out, and under other conditions that most of you would probably stay home in.

Worf and Jadzia, but only because I can't vote for "Jim and Julie"...wait, that would be an STF only poll....
You suck! I was gonna use a similar joke, "Where's the Gary and Krissy Option?" but you beat me to it.
Anywho, I do agree, Worf and Jadzia. An interesting mix of personalities there, which makes it quite amusing.

never really watched the O.C. I kinda wrote it off as a 90210 kinda thing, and never gave it a second thought. Is that an accurate assessment, or should I actually watch it?
-
I'm sure you can by a mug like that somewhere, and then get a decal made for it. Shouldn't be too hard.

I like to think that what I've done in uniform has helped. I mean, I'm not the guy out there actively hunting terrorists, and I'm not driving a police car around trying to keep the nieghborhood clean, but I do think my small 8-month contribution helped a bit. I'm also trying to raise my children to be smart, responsible people, who in the end will know at least right from wrong, and how to be accountable for their actions. I'm not exactly curing cancer, but I do give money to St. Jude. My name may not go down in the history books as the greatest humanitarian ever, but I hope what little bit I could do will be part of a greater good.

I saw the episode not too long ago where he refered to himself as "Senior Chief Specialist", sounds like Specialist is his job. I suppose if the modern navy had a job like that, Miles would be SPCCS Miles Edward O'Brien. It's entirely possible Starfleet has an enlisted rating system similar to that of the US Navy, and perhaps a few have even carried over. Torpedoman, Fire Controlman, Quartermaster, Master At Arms, Bostwain's (Bos'un's) Mate, and Hospital Corpsman I can see easily carrying over into the 21st Century. There might even be a few new ones: Warp Propulsion Specialist (WP), Phaser Technician (PT), Transporter Technician (TT), who knows?

I keep hearing Pie and Chips, and I think "Pizza and French Fries? What the...?" but then, I'm in the Pizza industry, so when I hear Pie it's either French Silk or Pepperoni.

I'm with AE on this. STF is, yes, a community with more members than some cities in my geographic area (Some counties, too), but I don't think we need ANOTHER forum or Subforum here. I mean, VBG should be glad he's not paying the Mod Staff. Can you imagine the payroll for that, especially if the staff keeps adding forums? I've been on this site for over 2 years, and I still haven't been everywhere here. This place is the Aircraft Carrier of Messageboards: You can spend all the time you want aboard, looking around, and you may never see the whole damn thing. I'm also told that, like a Carrier, there's a 2-lane Bowling alley around here somewhere...

He DID spend an ungawdly amount of time in San Diego, and he's been back here for what? six, eight months now? Surely Zompton has "re-infected him", Kris.

YBHYR, Krissy is reading over my shoulder and she got a big smile on her face when you mentioned her. as for me, who was my FIRST friend here? Hell if I know. But I personally would consider anyone a friend if they were gonna quote ME in THEIR signiture *wink wink*

NavyI, Squid, in lieu of going to prison, swear to sign away 4 years of my life to the United States Navy because I want to hang out with Marines without actually having to BE one of them, because I thought the Air Force was too "corporate," and because I thought, "hey, I like to swim...why not?"
I promise to wear clothing that went out of style in 1976 and to have my name stenciled on the butt of every pair of pants I own. I understand that I will be mistaken for the Good Humor man during the summer, and for Waffen SS during the winter.
I will strive to use a different language than the rest of the English-speaking world. using words like "deck, bulkhead, cover, and head" instead of "floor, wall, hat, and toilet." I will take great pride in the fact that all Navy acronyms, rank and ensignia, and everything else for that matter, are completely different from the other services and make absolutely no sense whatsoever.
I will muster (whatever that is) at 0700 hrs every morning unless I am buddy-buddy with the Chief, in which case I will show up around 0930 hours. I vow to hone my coffee cup handling skills to the point that I can stand up in a kayak being tossed around in a typhoon, and still not spill a drop.
I consent to being promoted and subsequently busted at least twice per fiscal year. I realize that, once selected for Chief, I am required to submit myself to the sick, and quite possibly illegal, whims of my new-found "colleagues." So help me Neptune.
That sounds about right. *jumps out of the way of an oncoming train, manages not to spill coffee* Don't let the single chevron fool you, I'm a master at holding a cup of coffee and looking important...

And tonight you didn't make off nearly so well. Partially my fault, since I left my lunch in the rest room...
