1. There are many different, and many specialized, dictionaries. All of them attempt to give accurate definitions. The Oxford English Dictionary is a huge multivolume dictionary which often gives the time period with examples of usage of different words. Even the OED doesn't have everything. There are also slang dictionaries. Most important of all is the fact that language is changed by usage. New words are added to languages all the time and some words or certain usages become obsolete. Technology adds new words to languages all the time. Dictionaries add new words. Language is ever changing, thus dictionaries are hard pressed to completely accurately depicit language and usage, although they do a pretty good job, imo.

  2. Yes, there are Trekkies everywhere (Thank goodness). Kirk would have done a lot of condolence letters, if it was real. I also wonder If this had been a real military situatution, if it would have been more difficult to recruit and retain security redshirts if they had a high casualty rate, or if there would always be new people ready to volunteer to serve under Kirk? Also, would better sensors or use of a mechanical probe, like those sent through the stargate on SG1, and equipped with tricorders or better sensors, have been able to detect more dangers and thus saved lives? (I know, I'm overthinking this WAY too much)!

  3. Why advertise it now - puzzling indeed! I thought the promotion of ENT and Voyager was poor, plus moving the night a show is aired is almost always going to result in lower ratings. If there is a chance it could move to Sci Fi - that would be fantastic. Maybe they are thinking of at least airing all the old episodes. Crossing my fingers that it could still be rescued from total cancelation!

  4. As of now, my favorites are (starting with most favorite to least):

Wrath of Khan - Khan vs. Kirk, Spock's death scene, creatures in the ears, etc.

The Voyage Home - completes trilogy, great humor, there be Whales here!

The Undiscovered Country - Sheakespearean quotes, Great direction and story

First Contact - Best TNG movie

Search For Spock - underated movie, destruction of the Enterprise

Generations - last hurrah for TOS crew

The Motion Picture - good sci fi story, started the movie franchise, slow in spots

    then there were

    Insurrection - ok

Nemesis - a few good parts, would rather forget, thought it might kill the franchise

The Final Frontier - poorly written & directed, silly, feared it would kill the franchise

    would rather forget

  5. Sorry to disagree but this was my least favorite Star Trek movie EVER. The introduction of Sybok was annoying to me. In twenty some years of boing friends and coworkers, it NEVER came up that Spock had a half brother? Puh-lease, that's just a writer trying to come up with a hook for a story! While showing the pain of each person was interesting, the long exposition through the "dangerous area" that turned out to be an illusion was annoying to me. The off key singing of Row your Boat was painful on many levels. Scotty hitting his head on a pipe was insulting to his knowledge of starfleet ships. Sulu getting lost was not that funny either imo - seems to be Shatner making fun of his fellow cast members. Shatner's direction was not very good imo, and I have read where he admitted that Nimoy told him to shoot extra footage in case it was needed, but Shatner did not shoot it and then discovered that was a mistake, as he had been TOLD by Nimoy, a much better more experienced director.

I was seriously worried at the time that Shatner had destroyed the movie franchise with this film. Fortunately that did not happen, but I still view it as a low point of Star Trek movies ( I do however, really enjoy Shatner as Denny Crane on Boston Legal - good acting (Just don't let him direct Star Trek again, please!)

  6. I voted for A Matter of Honor. It's an episode where we learn more about the Klingons, which is always interesting. My second favorite Riker episode would be Second Chances. Ricker is not my favorite TNG character but these two episodes were very good.

  7. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who are very intolerent of others. some who are of different races, religions and ethnicities, and others who they may just not like. Since moving from a rural area to Chicago, I am amazed at how important ethnicity and religion are to some many people in this area. Many families appear to feel that they and their children should only live among, ang out with and marry people who are exactly like them. Perhaps this is because there are more people who are immigrant or first and second generation Americans, but it seems to indicate fear and intolerance to me.

  8. Here is something that is interesting!

1885 - The family of Frank and Charles Menches from Akron, Ohio, claim the brothers invented the hamburger while traveling in a 100-man traveling concession circuit at events (fairs, race meetings, and farmers' picnics) in the Midwest in the early 1880s. During a stop at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York, the brothers ran out of pork for their hot sausage patty sandwiches. Because this happened on a particularly hot day, the local butchers stop slaughtering pigs. The butcher suggested that they substitute beef for the pork. The brothers ground up the beef, mixed it with some brown sugar, coffee, and other spices and served it as a sandwich between two pieces of bread. They called this sandwich the "hamburger" after Hamburg, New York where the fair was being held. In Frank's 1951 obituary in The Los Angeles Times, he is acknowledged him as the ''inventor'' of the hamburger.

The Menches family is still in the restaurant business and still serving hamburgers in Ohio. On May 28, 2005, the town of Akron, Ohio will host the First Annual National Hamburger Festival to celebrate the 120th Anniversary of the invention of the hamburger. The festival will be dedicated to Frank and Charles Menches. That's how sure the city of Akron is on the Menches' family claim on the contested contention that two residents invented the hamburger. The Ohio legislature is also considering making hamburgers the state food.

Very interesting Odie. I was in Akron recently but did not have any burgers. What is the name of their restuarant I wonder?

In Chicago there are a number of places well known for burgers and dogs beyond the chains. Near where I work is U Dawg U which has great burgers, dogs and polish. Some famous hot dog places in Chicago include Wolfies, Fat Johnnies, Demon Dogs, and Byron's. I'm making myself hungry! :wow:

  9. While rain is great for growing things and we need fresh water to live, rain is depressing to me. While I do like lightning, it can be destructive, plus I grew up with a dog who was terrified of lightning and had to have her head covered so she would not see it. It aslo depends on the rain. Light rainshowers are OK but torrents that bring floods are awful. I grew up near hte Mississippi and Rock Rivers there and have seen some pretty bad flodding. When I was in the Philippines the torrential rains were pretty bad.

  10. Myabe it was someone who grew up on a farm and felt like having fake animals on their lawn. In the last several years a number of large cities have had street exhibits in the summer where various animals, plastic or ceramic cows, horses, etc. are given to artists to paint. decorate etc, They are displayed on the streets then sold for charity for big bucks. The cows exhibit in Chicago was very popular and there were some very creative cows - astronauts cows, jazz cows, balerina cows, cows watching tv etc. One mans plastic cow could be another man's object'd'art. Or maybe they were just trying to annoy their neighbors.

  11. They could easily bring Data back. There wasn't a body so they can come up with something.

I think it wsa a mistake to kill off Data. I agree that they could bring him back. They did it with Spock. They should and could certainly do it with Data.

  12. Voyage Home is one of my favorite TOS movies along With STII and STVI. The humor is wonderful as is the change in Spock and great lines like "How do you feel? Spock why don't you answer?" "Mother, I don't understand the question?" " What did you say she had?" "Cramps." "One little mistake!" "Alameda. Where they keep the nucleur wessels!" and "A keyboard, How quaint!" I love this movie!

  13. The Motion Picture holds a special place in the heart of any Trek fan who is old enough to have watched TOS during its original run. We are the fans who kept Trek alive after it was cancelled. We are the ones who started conventions, fanzines and fan clubs all for the love of Star Trek. We kept it alive for all those years when there was no new Trek (not including TAS). So when the movie came out, we could hardly contain our excitement while standing in line for tickets. When the movie began and we heard the familiar refrain of the Trek theme, I can honestly tell you that there was not a dry eye in the house. The whole theater wept with joy. While other better Trek movies certainly followed, the emotion that we felt at the first movie has never been duplicated.

I agree with Kor about how fans kept Trek alive. Syndication of TOS also helped it win new fans.

still Kahn would of been a better 1st movie

    316797

I agree. Wrath of Khan should have been the first movie.

    316848

Also agree Wrath was a way better movie true to the series. Better uniforms, great villain, and creatures in their ears!

  14. I voted for Sins of the Father because of what we learned about both Worf and Klingon politics. My next favorites are Reunion, Emissary and Redemption. Another episode with Worf that I found very interesting was Family. Though much of the focus was on Picard's homecoming with his brother, this is the episode where we meet Worf's foster parents the Roshenko's. Thought it was very revealing and great casting.

  15. I used to be a big baseball fan but am more ambivalent now. I was rooting for the Cardinals last year. though it was exciting to see Boston finally win again. I live in Chicago which is Wait til Next Year City as far as baseball is considered. With all the controversy concerning steroids and drug testing its hard to feel the same way about baseball as I did years ago. I will still watch some games on tv but rarely go to a game, though I did see a spring training game in Winterhaven this spring.
