  1. True, but isn't Star Trek suppose to depict a "better" future for humanity?  DS9 seasons 5-7 and the latest movie shows Starfleet as being more soldiers than explorrers.  Doesn't this bother anyone else?  Personally, I'd much rather be a scientist on some ship charting a nebula than a soldier on some other ship, waiting to kill aliens.

So basically you are saying that the military is evil and should be abolished by the time we explore deep space? You really should do a little research on what the real military is like. The real military isn't people walking around with guns wanting to kill people. The military is the last ones to want war because when there is a war they are the first ones to die.

As far as wanting to have "scientists" in space exploring I again point out what real life space explorers are like and what their rank is an indication of their professions.

Pictured below is USAF Col. Dave Scott, Lt. Col. Alfred Worden and Col. Jim Irwin (Who would later go on to search for Noah's Ark):

    15portrait.jpg

It is the crew of Apollo 15 that are credited with having the scientific skill to bring back pieces of the original lunar crust. Jim Irwin even quoted bible passages while on the Moon. It was also Col. Scott that performed an experiment on the moon in front of TV cameras to prove Galileo's theroy of falling objects in gravity fields.

    hammerfeather-s.jpg

This is a painting by Apollo 12's Captain Allan Bean

"Well, in my left hand I have a feather; in my right hand a hammer. I guess one of the reasons we got here today was because of the gentleman named Galileo. A long time ago, he made a rather significant discovery about falling objects in gravity fields; and we thought - where would be a better place to confirm his findings than on the Moon? And, so, we thought we'd try it here for you. The feather is, appropriately, from an Air Force Academy falcon. I'll drop the hammer and the feather and, hopefully, they'll hit the ground at the same time."

Well, Dave let them go and, since there is no atmosphere on the Moon, they fell side by side. They did fall more slowly than on Earth because the gravity is one-sixth that of Earth's.

Dave continued, "How about that. This proves that Mr. Galileo was correct in his findings." ~ Painting and quote from http://www.alanbeangallery.com/hammerfeather.html

Cpt. Bean as well as Cpt Pete Conrad (USN) who both walked on the moon on Apollo 12 also flew to the Sky Lab space station in the early 1970's doing further scientific research.

I could show even more real life military explorers/scientists if you wish but I think you should see by just these few examples that the military is in the forefrunt in many cases of exploration and scientific research.

Besides, without the military who's going to come to your rescue when the "bad guys" come after you?

  2. Ok, this will start 1 year after the end of season 7. As you know Sisko defeated Dukat and the Pah Wraiths in the fire caves and was taken by the Profits because there was still Much Work to do.

Sisko has now returned after 1 year with the profits and his new Mission from the profits is to....

  3. Here's my best guess.

    Click for Spoiler:

I hope this is right "No More Tomorow" by the Beatles

    Click for Spoiler:

I'll let TheUnicornHunter tell when the correct guess has been made, but since I'm here now I'll let you know that's Incorrect.

  4. That is Cool. Do they think that , that trench was a river at one time?

That's Hadley Rille, they believe it was a river of sorts. Not like a river here on earth of course but a river of flowing lunar lava. Hadley Rille was one of the features that attracted Apollo 15 to that site. That along with the Appinine Mountains.

This was the site that the oldest moon rock to be brought back to Earth was found. It was dubbed the "Genisis Rock" because it is believed to be as old as the moon itself.

This was also the first mission to carry with them the Lunar Rover, a somall electric powered car. Three of which were taken to the moon. (Apollo 15, 16 and 17).

  5. There are people that believe that the lunar landings never happened in the late 60's and early 70's.

Well there's photographic proof that at least 1 landing did take place. In the late 90's a probe was sent into space that was called Clementine. It orbited the moon for some time taking pictures, in a series of the pictures the landing site for Apollo 15 has been located. Check out the site below for details, also comparethe picture from Clementine and the picture taken in the early 70's with a map of the traverse of Apollo 15.

  6. Every so often I will pick out a mini arc to watch and I'll watch all of the episodes that relate to that arc. Last night it was a "Nog-A-Thon" I watched "Heart Of Stone", "Facets" and "Little Green Men".

In "Heart Of Stone" Nog goes to Sisko and tells him he wants to be in Starfleet. In "Facets" he takes the test to be admitted into Starfleet Academy and in "Little Green Men" he leaves DS9 for Earth.

Tonight I'll watch "Treachery, Faith And The Great River" which shows Nog as a Starfleet officer yet still using his skill as a Ferengi to navigate his way through life in Starfleet, "The Seige of AR-558" where Nog becomes a war hero and also loses his leg in combat and finally "It's Only A Paper Moon" where he comes to terms with the loss of his leg and begins the mental healing process from the scars of combat.

I think those 6 episodes tell a great story of Nogs journey into and through Starfleet.

  7. This isn't a mood of mine right now, but since I was listening to Jim Croce and pulling out some of his great hits this one came up. But I think everyone has had a moment like this song is talking about. You want to call but you don't want to call. You pick up the phone and start to dail but you hang up. You pick it back up only to hang it up again. It's a good song.

  8. We had more posts this month then we did last month. In fact this was the most we've had in any of our 5 months so far. Monday was a slow day but most Mondays are.

Last month we reached 40,000 on June 16th. Here we are on July 14th (15th but it's only been the 15th for 2 hours on the east coast) and we have 50,535. Besides, I would expect it to be slower in the summer while people are on vacation or at the beach or whatever. When I was building and selling computers a few years back summer was always slower then fall and winter. People just aren't inside at their computers as much.

  9. Short of having Sci-Fi on TV and buying the sedt there's only a few options left.

    1. Video stores, a lot of times they have epidsodes.

    2. Library like Alterego said

    3. Download episodes like TrekkieMage said or

    4. NetFlix. They rent DVDs through the mail, I am a member and get a lot of them that way. You can get several at a time and can keep them as long as you want. It's a monthly fee though.

  10. With all the flash files being used I wanted to kind of set some "ground rules".

Keep the file sizes small, otherwise they won't load properly.

Keep the sizing of sig pics at or around 200x100.

Don't place any sound files into the Signature or avatar.

This one is important, be sure your hosting service isn't Geocities or Tripod. They have limited bandwidth and after you reach your max they cut you off for about 3 hours. When that happens no one will see your sig or avatar, it will just be an empty white box. Look for a host like Angelfire. I don't think they cut you off.

  11. Does that mean we could use any media program as long as the work was uploaded to the web?

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking about what kind of media files the board will display?

Currently the only "special" media files you can use for Avatars and Signatires is Flash which uses a .swf extension. You can use the basic pic types as well .gif .jpg etc. It doesn't matter what program you use to make the flash file, but it has to be flash and it has to have .swf to work.

Also, please keep any flash avatars and or signatures to a fairly small size (try to keep them under 100k) and don't add music or sounds.

  12. If it wasn't Star Trek I wouldn't have even known of it's existance so I nulled my vote. My job schedule is 4pm to 12am Sunday through Thursday so when the show airs I am at work. The only way I was able to watch the entire first season (and most of the second season) was by downloading them. Were it not for the show being Star Trek I woudn't have bothered.

  13. Now that T'Pol has resigned her commission with the Vulcan High Command, and is no longer a Sub Commander (just a civilian like Phlox), what position does she hold besides Science Officer?  Is she still First Officer, or does Trip move into the spot having the next highest rank?

Now that we've had this discussion and have determined that Starfleet is indeed military, what about my original question?

The military question kind of got things sidetracked, but here's my original response to this question:

In the first episode it was my feeling that Trip should have been command after Archer was hurt. T'Pol was just there as an adviser and observer. I thought it was improper for her to take command. That said, I think the Vulcans will allow her to take part in the mission in hindsight and her resignation will be forgotten about. Things will remain status quo.

Nothing will change, she will remain with the Vulcan high command and will remain in the same position she has held on Enterprise all along.

  14. Well, they can allways change it to Star Trek: Enterprise if they wanted to.  There was a show called Roswell High.  Half way through the first season, it was shortened to Roswell.  If you can shorten a series title, then surely you can expand it.

From what I read, there were 3 reasons they dropped Star Trek from the title.

    1. They wanted more people to watch as a lot of people change the channel once Star Trek shows up in the credits.

    2. It's a prequal, so they felt it shouldn't have Star Trek in the title since it's set before the original series.

    3. They were trying to come up with another way to say "Star Trek" without actually saying it, this they named the series Enterprise.

Personally, I think #1 sounds dumb, #2 makes sense but isn't neccessary.  #3 makes perfect sense.  They wanted a compact title that implied "Star Trek" without saying it.  That I can buy.

Saying it's a Prequel so it shouldn't have Star Trek doesn't make much sense, First Contact took place well before Enterprise and the term was used there.

They should just rename it and give the show back it's identity.
