  1. I couldn't put an actual number to it and be sure it was correct but back before I founded STF and before all of the series were on DVD I made a concerted effort to find and download as many episodes as I could. I didn't watch every episode as soon as I downloaded it though, but when I got all of DS9 completed I decided to start with episode 1 and watch them all through to completion.

I remember being on vacation from work for a week and just watching the whole series, I don't remember if I completed all 7 seasons in that week but in that time I'd watch from the time I got up until I went to bed with short breaks to get something to eat or shower or whatever. So I would guess it would be somewhere between 15 or 16 hours in a row each day for a week.

That was around 2001 or 2002. Since then I'll pull out the DVD's and watch a disc at a time, sometimes 2 discs a day when I'm in the mood and have the time. A lot of times I'll pop a disc in the DVD player and have it on while I'm doing other things but only half paying attention.

Before any of that, back in the 90's when Sci-Fi or TNN would do a marathon I'd watch all of those. Sometimes it might be 8 episodes or sometimes 10.

  2. It would have been cool, to see the 'Master of Ceremonies' descendent welcome the Federation folks back...but, with holodecks so commonplace...

In the holodecks though, the participants know they're in a holodeck and picked the holostory that's playing. On the amusement planet it's their random thoughts that 'pick' the adventure.

Would have been cool to see, but probably wouldn't have worked.

  3. Who says that the cop couldn't understand him? The cop doesn't say anything at all to him, just stares at him in disbelief as if he's thinking "We're in the middle of the cold war and this Russian is asking me to direct him toward our nuclear wessels??"

But if the cop understood him, wouldn't he ask why a Russian was asking to be directed to a nuclear wessel? Another thing that makes you go "hmm". (Showing my age with that one. )

I think he understood and was ignoring Chekov too but it is possible he didn't understand him.

Given that everyone else that they spoke to understood him (the one lady even gave directions) I think he understood him. The accent wasn't at all that thick. If he didn't understand him then why would he just stare at him as opposed to asking him to repeat himself or telling him "I'm sorry, I can't understand you"?

  4. I am happy :wow: no complaints from me :wow: in fact this is the best web site out there  I have even found myself rooting for the  I am however seeking consuling for that.

    :elephant: THANKS VBG :elephant:

lol Thanks, and hopefully there'll be a lot of Eagle rooting this coming season. I've been a fan since 1978 and I'm due for a Super Bowl victory! lol

In fact if they do make it all the way and money is available when the time comes I might just drive down to Miami for the game. I honestly believe that the only reason that they lost the last 2 Super Bowls was becasue I wasn't there in New Orleans and Jacksonville... :eagles:

  5. I found it interesting to read about the way this episode was created, it was done 'on the fly' as they were shooting. Roddenberry was literally sitting under a tree writing it as they were shooting. There is of course more to the story than that but it was one of those things where they just couldn't use the script as it had been written and they were out of time to start shooting, so it was re-written during shooting.

I had always hoped to see TNG, DS9 or even Enterprise show up at that planet.

  6. Even still, the U.T. should be able to translate it. It can understand Klingon or Vulcan but not English spoken with a Russian accent? Yeah, I believe that...

On the other hand, it would explain why a San Francisco cop couldn't understand him.

  7. Outside of the internet, not very often actually. Maybe once a month or more often if there's something in the news or something's happening like the when the movie came out. Everyone in my family knows that I founded this site so any time there's something that happens in the world of Star Trek they'll talk to me about it. They're all fans of Star Trek too though, so it's not in a 'teasing' sort of way. But unless there's something that brings it to their minds, not very often.

The original U.T. also reminds me of a big "Beta Capsule"... if you remember what a Beta Capsule is...

Of course I do. It translates Japanese into Engrish.

    ultraman.jpg

lol I figured that since we're about the same age you'd remember that.

  9. On the topic of the Universal Translator, why does the computer of Star Trek (2009) have a hard time understanding Chekov yet presumably can understand alien languages and translate them, which would also lend itself to the question of why Chekov would be speaking English in the first place. The U.T. can translate languages, so shouldn't he be speaking Russian?

As for humans in the TNG era, the U.T. is their communicator. TOS era humans had to use this (either held or in their possession like in a pocket):

Even in countries with a predominant language other than English many people speak English. Sometimes a majority of the people will speak the native language *and* English. This is especially true for European countries like Russia.

Or maybe he is using the Force. That UT does lok like a lightsaber you know.

  10. A good episode that would be great if it didn't mess up the continuity. I give it a 4

In what way did it mess up the continuity?

Unless the Doctor's program was copied somehow it means he is on the planet *and* made it back to Earth.

In the episode it's said that the EMH back-up module was stolen, so it's not so much that he was "copied" though the back up module would be a 'copy'. So he is on the planet but also made it back to Earth at the end of the series. It's not until 700 years later that the back up module is activated.

The only possible issue I see with the episode is that earlier in this season (season 4) in the episode "Message in a bottle" when the Doctor is transmitted across the alien array to the Beta Quadrant Voyager is left without the EMH meaning that there was no back up module as of that episode (or maybe it wasn't working). In that episode, Kim and Paris are attempting to create a back up EMH so Paris doesn't have to be the full time medic but it fails.

The presence of the back up module in "Living Witness" must mean that Kim and/or Paris was/were successful in making a back up though. I don't see that as a continuity issue though because they were shown attempting to make a back up and it stands to reason that they'd somehow figure out how to actually back up the program at some point.

As for the back up Doctor that is re-activated, we don't know if he ever made it back to Earth or not.

  11. Even with bigger budgets and fancy special effects TOS kicks TNG's butt.

I went and looked at the wizarduniverse site and looked at the list and I find a few things wrong with it.

    1) A large percentage of the shows aren't science fiction in my opinion, Buffy The Vampire Slayer (a teen fantasy horror goth soap opera), Angel (see Buffy), The Dead Zone (goth soap opera), Dark Shadows (horror soap opera), Smallville (soap opera), Supernatural (goth soap opera) These shows are not science fiction.

    2) I have to wonder why none of the 4 Irwin Allen science fiction series made the list.

    3) If the list had been limited to actual science fiction a lot of the results would be different.

    4) Dr Who the greatest science fiction show ever?? what were these people smoking?

Those are just my opinions take em' or leave em'

I agree with the above as well.

  12. No, I don't believe TNG was 'better' than TOS. Different, and made in a different era but not better. As for 'Dr. Who', I've never seen a single episode in all my 40 years on this planet (as opposed to the other planets I've been on lol). When someone says "Dr Who" to me, I think of our member by that name.

I also greatly disagree with any list of "greatest" sci-fi shows that doesn't include all 5 series from the Star Trek franchise yet does include the likes of 'V' and a few of the others listed and also excludes 'Lost in Space' or 'Space 1999'.

  13. ...but in one episode of DS9 Quark's universal Translator breaks and he has to have it fixed on the spot. His brother has to actually pull it out from deep inside his ear to work on it, then re-implant it.

I believe the episode that you're talking about is "Little Green Men" and the culprit of why the UT isn't working is the nuclear fusion in the atmosphere by mid 20th century atomic bomb tests. In it, all three of the Ferengi U.T.'s are on the fritz, so Rom has to borrow a hairpin from Nurse Garland in order to hit the reset button (or whatever he had to do to fix it). Once he has the hairpin he goes to Nog and pokes it into his ear, shortly after that all 3 of them are able to understand English and are able to be understood by the 'hoo-mons'.

The real question here, from a 'real life' stand point is why are the humans from the 20th century able to understand the Ferengi? They don't have U.T.'s, so we have to assume that not only do they translate what the owner of the U.T. hears but they translate what the owner says into whatever language needs to be heard (we see this again in Voyager's "The 37's").

On the topic of the Universal Translator, why does the computer of Star Trek (2009) have a hard time understanding Chekov yet presumably can understand alien languages and translate them, which would also lend itself to the question of why Chekov would be speaking English in the first place. 14. I'll also add one that's already been mentioned... Taxi. That was a classic! You gotta love Jim! Especially the episode where he had to take his driving test to become a cabbie... I remember watching this with my father and brothers and all of us almost rolling on the floor laughing so hard!

Yeah, that was a classic. One of the better episodes too.

"Mental illness or narcotic addiction?" "Gee, that's a tough choice." LOL

You knew exactly what was going to happen when Jim asked "What does a yellow light mean?" and whats-his-name said "Slow down." but it still got laughs when it was played out.

"Whats-his-name" is Bobby Wheeler played by Jeff Conaway, he wound up leaving the show. I believe over drug issues.

  15. Well, I'm afraid that I'm one of those that some fans are a little annoyed with but I think they just aren't understanding me and my thoughts. I agree with everything you said above and really want the new series of movies to do very well.

Here in "our little world" of STF though, it's also a place to discuss the little details (in my view anyway). So in my review I addressed a few of those little nitpickey items that only longtime, hardcore Trek fans would spot and want to discuss. No matter how many times I proclaimed my liking of the movie though some were a little 'ticked off' thinking that I was 'bashing' the new movie. C'est la vie I guess lol. Anyway, I look forward to seeing what they do down the road.

  16. I got an extra set of the glasses specifically to open one set but haven't quite talked myself into doing it yet lol. I have opened the boxes, I did that when I bought each one to make sure they weren't cracked and to make sure the right glass was in the box. But I didn't take the glass out of it's little plastic bag.

I saw something in a commerical for them that looked like the glass changes color when there's a cold drink in it, is that the case? I'd be somewhat surprised if they do and I'd probably open at least one of the glasses as well. For right now though, I don't plan on opening any of my 3 sets.
