what is your profession?

Recommended Posts

This is kind of a weird question for me to be asking seing as I'm still a student and don't have a job, but I'm courious. What does everybody do for work? and if you don't work, what would you like to be when you do get older? I'm not exactly sure what I want to do, although probably something to do with kids, maybe docter or some kind of job in a school.

I've been an audio production engineer (i.e. recording engineer) for over 25 years now. I specialize now in broadcast production but I've done just about everything the field has to offer. When I was 17, I started out as a radio personality as well (DJ), but I can add to that, music engineer, studio manager, foley artist, video sweetener etc. It sure beats working in a factory but I have to say that sometimes the hours stink. There have been times when I've started a project at 7 a.m. and then walked out at 4 a.m. the following day. It may be cool, but is sure cuts down on social life.

I'm a periodic student. I say periodic because my school tends to have lots of FUBARs that end up preventing me from attending for whatever reason. :) Of course, I'm transferring next year.

I've been doing a little bit of whatever the last year or so. Being a student, I worked a few different work-study jobs on campus. Some of them good, and others not so good. I've also been working for a contract/temp service. It doesn't pay much, but the jobs look good on a resume, and they get me by. Too bad they don't last very long like they used to a few years ago.

Ack. I can't wait to get my degree. Work in my area is terrible if you don't have one. The other option is move, but getting a degree is high on my priority list.

I work in a call center..or as some people like to describe it, I'm a "phone jockey." Right now I'm a customer service rep working for the local cable company. My job description? I get (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't)ed at for a living. Oh well, at least my job is never dull.

I have an education degree, but am currently the manager of a cash office/service center. I loved teaching, and dislike my current position - you'd think I'd smarten up, wouldn't ya?

Until about an hour ago I was a cash office specialist at a local store. In a few weeks I'll be working as a cashier at Walmart. Not exactly my dream job but it's either this or sell my car and live under the local bridge until I finish school.

:) Well, I am a mental health contiuing education director at a local medical center. If that doesn't make sense.....I was a psychotherapist for twenty years, who got burned out and decided to go into teaching about it instead. :)

I'm very sorry to hear about that. I'm in a similar boat, but luckily I'm mooching off the parents until I transfer to another school. :)

I recently lost my job due to the school's lovely decision to cut off my financial aide. The job situation around here is terrible, so I can't afford to get a job and pay for school until my aide gets restored. Hopefully I can get enough aide at this other school, and enough money save up this summer, to go there next year.

Being out of work without some sort of good skills sucks. I'm good at computers, but without a degree I get passed up by these dorks who took a class to learn how to double-click and move windows. :)

btw, any of you who might be in and out of work might want to check with your local computer training places. Locally, one of them is offering free computer classes to those who've been laid off in the last 6 months. They're not much, but it's something to add to the resume. It's funny, but unless you can say you took computer courses a lot of potential employers won't even consider you. Even if you have an aptitude for picking it up and can teach yourself, or track down info, on how to do just about anything.

Great way of putting it^^^ I do Computer technical support. I was doing support for Bellsouth dial up, but I am now in training to move to the Verizon DSL project.

My work history has been mostly admininstrative. After a layoff I went back to temping to have some income while job hunting. I had been working towards my teaching certificate since I already had a degree I only needed the education classes. Might I suggest that a BS in Psychology doesn't open a lot of doors; but boy I loved it. My minor was in Anthropology. No real market for social science teachers so I've been taking course work in other areas.

Since I spend two hours a day commuting I really need a tape system so I can record my "novel" and go home and play the tape to the computer and have the PC type from the recording. I don't know if the technology is available for that or not.

I am currently a gymnastics instructor(for the last 5 years-1998-2003) at the same gymnastics studio that I have trained at for the last 20 years(1983-2003...Nationally ranked Level 8 gymnast...in my 12th and final year of competition, 1998)...however I will be locating a second job(gotta pay bills you know), and that job may become my primary one, you never know.

I also am a Senior in college seeking my Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies(Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)...I am also thinking of getting an associates degree in either history, humanities, chemistry, or mathematics, or I may even go for all of them. I plan to be a research scientist, and aspire to be a mission specialist on a space shuttle mission.

I am also a part time musician... I play clarinet with my family's band. I also have begun playing the guitar again, and am hoping to start playing oboe as well(if I can get my hands on one)

Nuclear astrophysicist.  It's a great job, but a huge conversation killer at parties.

Your occupation might be a conservation killer at parties but I would like to know what is involved in your job.

I'm a primary school teacher (elementary for US viewers).

I just work part time as a food demo person at a specialty food store. I love to cook, so it fits well and I have product knowledge to help in selling.

I write short stories as a hobby, but my husband keeps thinking I'll get serious one day

I have done the call center think for years, but I actually liked it. I was the one they sent all the problem children too. I'm good at calming people down.

Primarily I’m going to college, but I am working as a computer networking engineer part time. Actually I’m at my job very little. The place I work at does not want me there too much (LOL) because of the company’s finances. After I graduate from the school I’m going to, then I’ll probably go to a regular university and get a masters or doctors in physics & math (and maybe astrophysics).
