  1. *The camera cuts to Fenriz, who's trying to balance a pencil on his nose*

"Psst. Hey you're on." Someone off camera whispers.

"Huh?" The pencil pokes Fenriz in the eye. "OW! Oh hey folks. Um. It's a clear cool day here in the Bowels. Right now it's in the low 60s. Should warm up later this afternoon. Or so they would have you believe."

The director gives Fenriz a signal to fill more time. "Huh? What's that signal mean? Key lime? Yeah I like Key lime pie. I don't see what that has to do with OH...fill time. Er...Um...yep sure is weathery out there....yep....now a message from our sponsors...or somebody...please?" Fenriz looks like a deer caught in headlights. :flowers:

  2. spiders are "robots" sent out by the search engines to investigate sites and bookmark them - basicly remembering them - then adding them to the search engines list of site to look for..

    try it:

    go to http://www.google.com

    type startrekfans

and in there should be this site..

Freaky. I always wondered what those spider bots were.

I suppose I could have just scrolled up. :b-day::b-day:

  3. I get about one email a month that 'appears' official asking for me to 're-enter' my account information. Luckily a little voice told me to check with my ISP. The told me it was a scam so now I just delete all of those e's when I get them. It's hard to keep up with all of the scams out there nowadays.

  4. I don't know if this is wisdom but it's a theory I've developed by observing people. Most conspiracies are the product of incompetance. For example:

There are a lot of people who believe that the government is covering up the truth about what happened in Roswell NM. This is true, in a sense. The first guy on the scene was kind of um...I guess the only word I can find is stupid. He thought he was looking at an alien spacecraft from outerspace.

The owner of the field just wanted the crap gone so of course there was a lot of Barney Fifeing going on.

"Step away from the wreckage Sir. You are not authorized to view this wreckage." The guy says.

"You mean this crap? Looks like a balloon or something." The field's owner replies.

"I'm not at liberty to say Sir. But lets just say this craft may not be of this earth."

    "A spaceship? I don't buy it. I think it's a balloon. Am I right?" The owner asks.

"Sir please step away from the craft." Our hero is a little discouraged now.

"Whatever. I'm calling your C.O. and tell him to get this crap off my land or I'm going to burn it with the rest of the trash." The owner gets in his truck and drives away.

Our hero's buddy showed up next.

"Look. This is amazing. I've found a flying saucer." Our hero explains.

"You are an idiot. This is a freaking balloon."

"No. It's a flying saucer. I just know it." The first guy responds.

"Yea. And last week you thought the reason why the waitress at the diner shot you down was because she's just being hard to get. Do all flying saucers say property of the USAF on them genius?" His friend says.

"This is a flying saucer. Hey look. I found an alien body."

"An alien body? That's made out of plastic? If you weren't such a lousy poker player I don't think I'd hang around with you. Where's the radio. We need to tell the C.O. so somebody can clean this up."

    "I thought you brought one."

Of course rather than admit he was mistaken the first guy stuck to his story to the last. The moral of the story? If you make a stupid mistake just admit it, it will be much easier on the rest of us in the long run.

  5. The Dominion reminds me more of the ancient Persian Empire than the ancient Greeks. Persia was an empire with nobility(the Founders) that ruled, and satraps(the Vorta) that ruled the provinces, with a large army and elite solders called Immortals(the Gem'Hadar). They encouraged infighting among the Greek city states so that they could keep their enemies divided. Athens would perhaps represent the Federation and Sparta the Klingons. After the Greeks united briefly and defeated the two Persian invasions, Athens and Sparta fought a long war. This is simliar to the Dominion getting the Klingon Empire and the Federation to go to war, however that did happen before the Dominion invaded while the Peloponnesian war happened after the Persian wars. The Dominion brought Cardassia into it's empire, similiar to the Persian Empire annexing the Anatolian Greeks of Asia Minor. I think you are onto something though. This time period seems to have inspired the writers of DS9 when they created the Dominion.

  6. Maybe I was lucky or a stupid kid but I was eating my candy in between the houses as I walked. :b-day: Of course that was more than a few years ago, I suppose it's different out there now. I do know that I buy candy to hand out but I've yet to get any trick-or-treaters. It's not like it used to be, with the streets crawling with trick-or-treaters. On the plus side I usually make myself sick on November 1st on leftover candy. :b-day:

  7. I think the Borg are a perfect example of the philosophy "The Ends Justify The Means." The Borg seek perfection, they began as a purely biological species and incorporated cybernetic enhancements to improve themselves. They then reached a point where they needed to assimilate other technologies and then it progressed to species, so that they could continue their evolution towards perfection. It's been stated many times in Star Trek that humans in the Star Trek universe work to better themselves and the human race as a whole. I think this is similiar to what the Borg do but for the Borg the goal is absolute whereas for the humans the journey is as important as the destination. Humans could not achieve perfection if they violated the rights of other species to exist in peace and develop as they see fit.

  8. I think that a male captain would have been less likely to bend the rules to get Voyager home. Janeway was the captain, but I thought of her almost a mother figure to the crew. She had to get them home and keep them safe but at the same time she was still a Starfleet captain and had a set of values to uphold. I don't think a male captain would have been quite as caring towards the crew. I think she did a good job, overall.

  9. Relationships online or in-person, IMO, can produce the same feelings. I never would've believed it until it happened to me, but the things that attract you to someone online are different than the things that would attract you in-person. You wouldn't, for example, hold it against someone in-person if they couldn't spell, not that I'm holding anything against anyone in here because they can't spell. :wink2: How important are these things to you? In-Person and Online:

    APPEARANCE

IN-PERSON What they look like. It's what usually attracts you to someone in-person first.

ONLINE Their username and avatar. You can form a snap judgement about someone from these. Would you PM someone with a Barney avatar? :b-day:

    THEIR VOICE

IN-PERSON What their voice sounds like. Their accent, the way they speak.

ONLINE How they write, how they put words together. Are they very formal or do they use smileys? What smileys do they use? What does this tell you about them?

    ATTITUDE

IN-PERSON Their tone of voice. How they say something, sarcastic or light-hearted. Their body language.

ONLINE Their avatar and signature can give a person a sense of attitude. it could be goofy or profound, or even confusing. They could place a smiley at the end of a sentence and make it go from dead serious to tongue-in-cheek. :b-day: Or do you add a certain formality to the people you meet online because you're writing to them and there are certain rules that should be observed? Do you feel like you're talking to someone or writing to them? Does this make you feel closer or more distant to them?

    AVAILABILITY

IN-PERSON How much time they spend with you. Are they there for you when you need them? Do they make time for you, do they rearrange their schedule for you?

ONLINE Do you IM them. Do they respond when you IM, PM, or email them? Do they try to be online when you're online?

    INTERESTS

IN-PERSON In-Person it's not something you know if you immediately share.

ONLINE Online it's often how you meet a person in the first place. At a site or chatroom that revolves around a certain interest.

    SENSE OF HUMOR

IN-PERSON Sometimes you share this with someone from the beginning. However many people are on their 'best' behavior when you meet them in person. They might not be inclined to crack silly jokes until they're comfortable with you.

ONLINE Online people often feel a little more relaxed and make jokes. Their sense of humor is less guarded.

Online you learn about someone from the inside out. In-Person it's from the outside in. In-Person it takes you longer to get a true picture of a person, but online you do have to take a person at their word. If they tell you they're a certain age or sex you have to believe them so there's a greater chance for deception. It's harder for a retired steel worker to pass himself off as a 25 year old hair stylist in-person. Does the anonymity of the internet allow people to be more secure about who they are and give you a truer idea of who they are? Or do you have to meet someone before you can feel an emotional attachment to them? Does it allow someone to be themselves and not worry about how someone will judge them based on their appearance? Do you think you'd have conversations with the members of this site if you ran into them at a bus stop or waiting in line at the store? You wouldn't even know that you shared a common interest in Star Trek, for example. What are everyone's thoughts on any of this?

  10. Right now I use a screensaver I found called "Electric" It's basically swirling and rotating colors that move across the screen. I like it, and on the plus side it's not only freeware but a very small download. Less than one megabyte.

I can see how it would bother some people who are effecting by flashing lights or colors though, so it's not for everyone. I myself have to be careful not to stare at it too long, it has a very high "zone out" factor.
