  1. As you may have noticed startrekfans.net has reached an amazing milestone – 10,000 posts! In a little under a month since I joined these boards we have had over 8,000 posts and 70 new members! Wow!

Many of us are refugees from the hate and spam of other boards. Startrekfans.net has become a haven to us – a place we can come to share our mutual love for the Trek world, to express opinions and debate without fear of personal attacks and the absence of the vicious and/or ignorant spammers that have created havoc at other sites.

I wanted to take this time to say thanks to VaBeachGuy and Alterego.  VBG, the love and hard work that you have put into startrekfans.net are so obvious by the success of the site.  We salute you as a fan that has made a difference to Trekdom by giving us a safe refuge to enjoy our mutual passions.  Alterego, your love and dedication to startrekfans.net are also obvious.  The time and energy spent here is so appreciated. I also want to thank Luvin1stdegree, Xeroc, poguemahone, Master_Q and Celtic_Swimmer who have helped make this site the success that it is. I am very proud to be a fellow moderator at this site.

Of course, a site like startrekfans.net is only as good as its members.  Thank you to all of you who have shared your thoughts, opinions and love on all things Star Trek. Without your contributions we would not be celebrating this momentous occasion.

So let’s all raise our glasses in celebration and toast to the next 10,000 posts.

    Amen to that

  2. Has anyone noticed that acts of violence seem to break out during peace rallies? Whats up with that?

Syria needs to cough up any Iraqi leaders they may be hiding, and close down all its terrorist camps.

Absolutely agree. However, they won't "cough up " anyone as we are the enemy in their eyes.Just hope Dubya hangs fire, to do anything else would play right into their hands.

  3. Not very good with titles of episodes but i'm guessing this is the ep where Nog looses his leg. Great ep, really brings home the price of war to you, like we need it in these troubled times, but also reminds us that sometimes you need to stand up and be counted

Don't know about you, but i'm behind the troops from my country ( England) 100 percent. This is by no means a political statement....it's from the heart, hope it doesn't offend anyone.

  4. I agree that TNG's first couple of seasons had many great episodes but it wasn't until season 3 that the exploration of who these people were started in earnest.  I have heard the first season described as "alien of the week" stuff.  Season 2 was hampered by the writers' strike so a lot of TOS episode ideas that had been shelved were re-written for TNG.

I have been watching Enterprise a lot more of late and what I have seen I have really enjoyed.  I'm glad new episodes are on again.

I suppose if you are looking for episodes that are largely devoted to characterisation, then I agree that you have to look at the latter seasons of TNG. However, I always liked that monster of the week feel that was so dominant in TOS, I do like the odd episode that's main focus is a particular character and their relationships with the others, but for me science fiction is more about sci-fi concept and adventure than soap opera style exploration of characters (which is why I am not a big fan of DS9).

I mentioned in a previous post that TNG didn't get into it's stride until season 3 and you quite rightly pointed out that some of the best eps were in the first 3 seasons..agreed. I was however talking in terms of character development which i believe is very important. It's because i felt i KNEW the characters that i love TNG so much and why i KNOW DS9 WAS every bit as good, if somewhat darker. The use of character and story arcs in DS9 did nothing but enhance the trek universe imho.

  5. I think it's just a matter of giving it time. Time to get to know the characters and feel comfortable with them. Even the mighty TNG took 3 seasons to really get into it's stride, but was easier to love as we'd gone so long without ST it was like manna from heaven. I really think until you get the calibre of writers that were on TNG nothing is really going to jump out at you,but on the whole i like Enterprise. Bring back Michael Piller for God's sake !!

  6. I was in a Suncoast Video shop the other night and I happen to notice that their copies of the DS9 Season 1 set had a separate DVD or CD shrink-wrapped to the package. I was wondering if anyone knew what this extra disk is all about and if it's available somewhere(without me having to buy the whole set again).  If helpful, I live in the U.S., east coast.  :wow:

    Thanks!  :wow:

    Stingray

No idea, unless it was the special features dvd that for some reason wasn't inside, although i can't see it. If you find out let me know, i'd hate to think there are extra's that i didn't get with my box set. LOL.

  7. Why is everybody so down on Rick Berman, give the guy a break!!!  On set he is rather rude but maybe he has to be...

If he didnt do his job, who really would?  Do any of you think there is another more qualified, available who would do a better job of keeping the writters to stay in the characterasations , with in the story and time line,  and history of Trek.  Who better to coordinate it all?  IDIC with all those restrictions?  Restrictions restrictions but keep it fresh too?  You know how hard that all is?  Like Paramount has writers that only live breathe and eat Trek like we do.  He is the top dog & the first one held accountable, but really what would you complainers all suggest?

Give me a discussion here? :)

I would suggest letting Spot the cat take over. He would do a better job.

  8. Are there any more trekkers (or trekkies) who like Garak too?  None of my trek friends seem to care one way or the other about him and begining to wonder if I'm the only one.

I love Garak. He is one of my favourite characters. I watched the ep where he " makes contact" with Bashir for the first time the other day. When Bashir suggests there is talk on the station that he is the eyes and ears of Cardassia, the way he replys " you don't say" cracks me up . i love his humour and his sense of irony. He's brilliant !! :D

  9. Pulaski annoyed me the way she treated Data, but i liked the dynamic between her and Picard, and her interactions with Worf. I think she was a much stronger character than Crusher, even though she only had 1 season to showcase it. And one definate minus for Beverley is the fact that she spawned the annoying Weasley Crusher

  10. I think he's still just pissed because he didn't get a very good death scene in Generations. Also before Picard he was "THE" captian of the Enterprise, and now he's what 1 of 5? Also a few years ago TV Guide voted Patrick Stewet Sexiest Man, and he's bold! That had to have been a blow to his ego....

I still love Kirk and even Shatner despite.

Has anyone ever seen the movie Free Enterprise? It made me gain new found respect for Shatner simply because he was willing to be in it. If you haven't seen it, it's one of the funniest movies ever!

Yes i've seen Free Enterprise and you got to give the guy the fact that he doesn't mind poking fun at himself.

  11. You are all probably right about Shatner. I haven't really paid enough attention to the guy to have an opinion. However, when he says we need to get back to good stories he is absolutely right. I enjoy Enterprise, but the last few eps have reminded me of previous eps. eg. last weeks reminded me of the film Enemy Mine, the Hoshi ep was VERY similar to the Geordi Ro ep in TNG. It seems a long time since i've seen a story to match say " Measure of a Man " TNG :)

  12. William Shatner (James T. Kirk) today said Star Trek has become "old hat" and needs new blood if the franchise is to endure.

"It needs something new," Shatner told Terry Morrow of the Scripps Howard News Service (via Naples News). "The people responsible for it have lost its way, and they need to find it again. They need a whole new group of talents to give everyone a fresh approach. By doing too many things, they have lost its way because of greed."

Shatner said he doesn't watch the latest television series, Enterprise, and didn't see Star Trek Nemesis at the cinema, either. "Curious, isn't it?" he said, "but I have never had a desire to see it, and you'd think I would ... Paramount must be worried over the lack of interest at the box office and the numbers for the series."

The solution, according to the actor, is simple. "They should hearken back to where it was before with good stories," Shatner said.

To read the complete article, head over to Naples News.

I just have to post this because he is completely on the money and we really need ST stars like this to speak out. People like Berman are really holding ST back. He really is not brining in good shows. In fact Berman actually called (truthfully) ST “silly” or 1/2 real and 1/2 silly. I would agree ST has humor and sometimes is silly, but its not on the border of the two.

Here’s the quote that that he says ST borders on silly (and he is the one that is really the controller of ST today):

Star Trek is something that always borders on the silly

And if you really read what he says most of it really shows that he does not have the best interest for the show. Of course he has done great things for ST, but right now I think he needs to go.

That is one of the issues (getting rid of Berman) that would (at least I think) help ST.

ENT I admit that I have not seen a majority of the shows because I don’t care for it. This is due to lack of originality and that goes back to what Shatner said. But I do admit the last two episodes that I have seen are not that bad.

But overall I think ST does need a shaping to help its future. (And just to get back the 'Best of Trek' days [what every you think they were])

    Master Q

    StarTrek_Master_Q@yahoo.com

Totally agree. Dumb and Dumber ( Berman and Braga) are not my ideal choice to head the ST franchise, and Bill Shatner is spot on with his analysis.

Dumber said a lot more than ST borders on the silly too! I can't remember it all offhand but basically he wanted to get as far away from Gene Roddenberry's vision of ST as he could.

  13. Read your profile, and you mentioned siegfried sassoon and that you are interested in war history. Did you know that he was a friend and great inspiration to the ww1 poet Wilfred Owen?

    Are you familiar with Owen?

His descriptive poetry of life in the trenches of WW1 are excellent. He was required reading at college, and i was reluctant as i'm not a lover of poetry, but he so impressed me.

  14. While I support the current action taken against Saddam Hussain that is not the issue that I want to take about. I would like to wish all the best and my support to all the US/UK troops who are willing to give their lives for our futures. May god go with them and long live the relationship that remains between our two great countries.

    Agreed.
