  1. I loved Johnny Quest (the original) and I have rented the cartoons from the video store in recent years. I also used to watch Space Ghost (with twins Jan and Jayce), and Fantastic Four). In fact I have heard of most of the above.

Does anyone remember Tom Terrific and his wonder dog Manfred? Does anyone remember Crabby Appleton? What about Krazy Kat? Gumby? I am not making up these names.

  2. I picked Ben Hur and the quest for vengeance. But my favorite movie is a (real, real, real) old Ronald Reagan film called King's Row. It's not a great film, but it speaks clearly and reverently about the problems of "modern" life, and how caring friends and loved ones make the difference in one's success in life after setbacks and failures.

  3. I live in the central part of NC. We are currently experiencing high winds and rain, with lots of blowing debris ( mostly twigs and leaves) and some power outages. It is currently about 7:30 (9/18/03) pm. It has been raining more than eight hours. Public schools let out around noon; some stayed closed. The storm will pass by 6am tomorrow morning, and public schools are on normal schedules tomorrow.

  4. I read a thread talking about doing personal logs, and now there is a personal log forum. So are these supposed to be like keeping journals? How do you use them? Is it just like any forum where you read the thread and make comments? I have not read anything in there because I do not know if it is supposed to be private.

  5. I haven't had the flu yet, but I did have a scratchy throat shortly before the Labor Day weekend. I had to fight like the dickens to keep it from blowing up in to a full blown sore throat. The doctor refused to give me medicine....told me hot tea with lemon and honey, as if I didn't know that! I partially lost my voice and was full of self-pity. But I didn't get the fever, body aches, etc.

Like Gotabite, I am waiting for flu shots to be available. I took one for the first time last year, and did not get the flu for the first time since moving here.

I am so sorry you are feeling bad, TUH. Hope you feel better soon.

  6. Well......I am going to have to buck the trend. TOS was my favorite series, hands down.

But I would like to live in the era of First Contact, assuming that I would survive the war, the very last human world war, and move to Montana. I would want to be in that audience that watches the Vulcans land, and watches Cochran greet them. And then I would like to live to very old age to see mankind no longer killing one another for real ... that it actually lasted. I would have retired from helping to found Star Fleet, knowing from Lily's stories that we had a future. And I would not be upset with the Vulcans for being overprotective....I would just not let them stop me...like Archer and company!

  7. kirk was that strong-fearless leader... great role.

That's my opinion. But he wasn't aloof, or self-important. To the contrary, he was familiar with his officers (Archer tries to keep close relations also), and could be self-sacrificing. He was clever in battle, and had a sense of where the boundaries were, and when he should ignore them. And as a human being he erred sometimes.

  8. I thought they did a good job with the Tellarites on Enterprise as far as the make-up went. But I did not think they exhibited an especially argumentative nature. The main one seemed very focused on his purpose of recovering his ship, and didn't let Archer do a lot of talking at first.

  9. I feel so sorry for Charlie. I wish that there had been a follow-up story where someone came back decades later to check to see whether or not he had gained any self control.

But perhaps not. Kirk had asked if he could be trained to not use his power, and the Thasians said he always would use them. Too bad. Lonely life.

  10. I voted for (sigh from my teen age years) Captain Kirk! Of course I no longer have a crush on Captain Kirk, but in my mind he embodies all the adventure and fun Star Trek brought to my sister and me.

If I could vote for my sister, it would be (sigh from her teen age years) Mr. Spock!

As far as Uhura's historic presence in a non-traditional (for black women) role, the power of it was that she was there as naturally as anyone else, and so for my sister (who became a licensed veternarian (sp) before she passed) and me it was natural to consider science and math based professions. We did not know at the time that Uhura being in such a position was new and exceptional, because our parents did not make an issue of it. They were careful to reinforce and present positive images to their five children, but they also tried to keep us from taking on larger issues they felt should be dealt with only when we were older. ( My father was concerned that perhaps my sister and I were a little obsessive about Star Trek, watching all those reruns....)

  11. I said this elsewhere, that my sister and I were watching this with my mother, who almost never

watched Star Trek with us. She was surprised by the kiss, and said that TV's were being turned off in the South. My sister and I were more interested in watching Kirk and Spock deal with those snobby Platonians. We understood the importance much later in life.

  12. Oh, well. It seems I am beginning to disagree with everyone. I didn't see Titanic, but I liked all the other movies mentioned. I thought A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To The Forum was genuinely funny. I liked Lion King II, just not as well as the original. Star Trek V was okay. I loved Chariots of Fire , and have it on video. Hmmmmmmmm............ :o

Well, I can think of two movies I really do not like. One is Attack of the Killer Tomatoes ( it really was a movie... I saw it on one of those late late movies before the days of cable. Tomatoes were chasing people very unconvincingly.) The second is 200 Motels. It was the first feature on a two feature bill, and my sister and I had gone for the second feature, 2001:A Space Odyessy (sp).

We arrived in the middle of 200 Motels, and were just old enough to get in without parents, but we did not understand what was going on at all at the time. In retrospect it is still one of my least favorite films.

  13. More than once, I have read someone's comments about some episode being excellent or important, not been able to recall the episode, logged out of startrekfans.net, logged in to startrek.com, found the part of the library where the Star Trek episodes are, and looked until I found the episode, and, then said, "Oh, yeah, I remember that."

    Thanks for the short cut.

  14. I had an out-of-town meeting, scheduled for this weekend ( 9/19-9/21) in an eastern seaboard state, cancelled today due to concern for Isabel. Our host expressed concern that if we travelled this weekend we might be spending it stranded in an airport. So the meeting is being rescheduled.

  15. I voted maybe. How would it be organized?

It's potentially such a broad area... there are so many different sports. But almost everyone has some sport they like. In addition to football and basketball, my parents loved the Golf Channel, and knew all the European players as well as the Americans! I marvelled whenever I came home and found both the upstairs sets tuned to golf!

There would be wide use of such a forum, I think.

  16. I loved Benjamin Sisko because he was a complex character, who deeply loved his first wife Jennifer. In the midst of the DS9 and all the action of the show was this man emerging from years of darkness, not being able to move past Jennifer's death, into a full life again. He found a new love, and helped and influenced the lives of those on DS9 and Bajor. The difference between Nog at the beginning and end of the series is just one example of his impact beyond just managing the station, and carrying out his part in the war. He was a great character.
