  1. TBTB = The Powers That Be, people in control of Star Trek.

For purpose of message boards, like StarTrekFans, canon refers to the Official Body of works - all 'live action series and films'.

Tie-ins like novels, comics, games*, etc, aren't official canon which for us means we cannot use events in them as 'official' in conversation. If a topic is being discussed and someone brings up a non-canon event to try to solve some question regarding anything in the canon then it doesn't count.

Since Star Trek XI moved us into a new timeline, novels, comics and the online video game; Star Trek Online have continued creating new stories in the Original Timeline and here Capt_Picard is asking for opinions on whether TBTB should declare those works "canon".

(*I heard somewhere the upcoming STID video game tie-in will be considered canon.)

  2. For it to achieve a status of 'Canon' will, imo, require TPTB to declare it so and I don't think they would want to do that because doing so would be a proclamation of no new Original Universe Canon ever being produced again. Leaving it ambiguous keeps people hanging on with hope.

  3. At this point I am trying to be confident JJ will honor his word to Star Trek and not dump the final film of a trilogy off on someone else.

Worst case scenario would be a delay with part 3 of ST but even that could be unlikely given the 4 years it has been taking between them. Given this past experience, part 3 probably would not have come out by 2017 anyway. SW E7 has been said to release 2015 so that gives him more than two years to make ST 3.

  4. Hey. First let me say thanks to you all for hanging with us, especially through this issue. You're loyal though and through.

I've been unwilling to pass the warning signs and come onto the site myself. Obviously what-ever it was has passed on it's own or Kevin fixed it. Not sure which since he and I haven't spoken well before Sandy struck.

    Thanks again, you're the best.

  5. My take on it is this, they really couldn't do any worse on the sequels than Lucas did with the prequel trilogy.

If they screw it up, who cares*. If they get it right then O'happy day, more good Wars to enjoy.

*I have no investment in the EU but I understand many do and they do not want to see it decanonized but o'well, what are they going to do? Just like with NuTrek, we either accept changes or we don't but how the minority feel about it doesn't amount to a hill of beans to the Bean counters.

I am sure something about it probably won't sit well with me - No TCF Search-lights/drumbeats, no John Williams in the score? That's not Star Wars!

Disney to make new ‘Star Wars’ movies

By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, October 30, 3:45 PM

LOS ANGELES — A decade since George Lucas said “Star Wars” was finished on the big screen, a new trilogy under new ownership is destined for theaters after The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it was buying Lucasfilm Ltd. from him for $4.05 billion.

The seventh movie, with a working title of “Episode 7,” is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The trilogy will continue the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond “Return of the Jedi,” the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new “Star Wars” movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as creative consultant in the new movies.

    WOW. Just, wow.

  7. Technically it already failed. They, (NBC) weren't even going to air the pilot but decided what the hell. This presentations is primarily an attempt to recoup some of the 10 million spent on it. IF, IF, the numbers for the pilot airing are HUGH it MAY get new life.

'Mockingbird Lane' Premiere: Bryan Fuller Hopes Halloween Special Is Just The Beginning

Bryan Fuller isn't giving up on "Mockingbird Lane" now that it has a premiere date. NBC will air his "Munsters" reboot as a Halloween special, but Fuller, the creator of "Pushing Daises," told TV Guide he hopes that's just the start of all things Lily, Herman and Grandpa.

"Airing a pilot as a standalone seems unheard of, but when you actually see the 'Mockingbird Lane' pilot it has a beginning, middle and an end," Fuller said. "It's an emotional story of a family told in such an unconventional way, and with so many different tools that we have at our disposal because it's 'The Munsters' and not a regular family unit. It's such a different show that it merits a different way of getting it out to the audience."

The cast, which includes Eddie Izzard, Portia de Rossi and Jerry O'Connell, is all under contract until July. Should the pilot deliver a solid audience on Friday, October 26 at 8 p.m. on NBC, Fuller has plans for at least six episodes.

I am interested in watching the pilot based on what I've read about the reinvention details. This isn't simply a rehashing of the Munsters as that last attempt was, this is a really fresh, imaginative take on the characters.

Fuller once said the following, with regards to the the narrative and emotional core of the concept:

“… What I love about the ['Mockingbird Lane'] pilot story is it’s about a family who loves each other and they have a child [Eddie, the werewolf] with a disability and they’re trying to craft a path for that child so he can have a happy life — they just happen to be monsters. And, unlike in the original, we’re going to see our monsters do monstrous things.”

  8. Worf has been more 'fully developed and realized' than Geordie has but yeah, love to see something come of it.

Hopefully though, it would be something more than an animated, book or comic series. Something which becomes part of the 'canon'. Perhaps this, or any new "canon" from the original Universe to prove once and for all that the original timeline (actually it's the Original "Universe" or "Reality") still exists, wasn't overwritten by last film.
