1. As for why Lore became evil, I think that it had to do with many reasons all working together.  First he was given to much emotion before he had a chance to develop enough to be able to handle it.  Second, I find it very likely that he was greeted with fear and ridicule by the colonists.  I have a feeling that data also met this same cruelty, which would explain why the Soong's found it necessary to delete his memories of "his childhood" in order to spare him from the harsh memories and treatment that he probably received at the hands of the colonists.  Also, I think that a big difference between Data and Lore is that Lore was simply disassembled when something went wrong, there was no attempt to remove the "childhood" memories so that they would not effect him, he was simply abandoned.  On the other hand Data has no memory prior to his being discovered by Starfleet.  After he was discovered he likely spent alot of time with Starfleet personnel then later attended Starfleet Academy thus putting him in a structured environment that was able to teach him values and morals that Lore may not have had the privilege of being taught.

Which of course, I can truly agree with the observation as it is quite close to what I feel may have happened. And it would also then explain, or at least could explain Dr. Tainer's remark that she had feared that Data would become like Lore.. twisted and evil(so to speak). But since they had erased his childhood memories, this likelyhood of him becoming like his older brother may have been a very slim chance.

  2. I got it recently! I have not actually watched the film but started with the special features.

I had watched part of them yesterday morning... and I awoke this morning to find my brother watching through the entire section on the Borg. But then what can I expect?? He is a huge fan of the Borg, and pretty much anything cybernetics based..

  3. I can pretty much only echo what has been said by trekz and joeybear. Dictionaries can be used when helping clarifying the meaning of something you say(which I have done in the past on this board as well as others) but I definately can say that should not be used in legal situations to support a point of view. And thus should not be considered "binding" in a law case, on the grounds that they are changing these books on a regular basis.

Not only changing, but often times will not contain the same words as another dictionary. Not the greatest example, but an example nonetheless. When I was younger I had a dictionary and noticed it did have the word "android" in it, and when I went to the bookstore(because my dictionary was old and was quite beat up) I looked in the books and noticed that several of them that were supposedly newer editions did not contain that word. I thought it was odd, that one dictionary had it and another 6 did not. And "android" was not the only word I noticed missing, however at this point now nearly 12 - 15 years later I cannot recall the other words that I had a list of.

  4. In my case, I never really was part of any particular group. But I was definately not considered popular by any means. I was a nerd AND an athlete(though the athletics was mainly done outside of school), a drama geek and associated with some Goths(true said goths were in Drama with me but anyhow.)

There are two sides to the cheerleading story, on the grounds that my sister herself (EmilSoong) was a cheerleader from elementary school to middle school. The whole stereotype that comes with that and being a Pageant girl and model attached itself to her(for the record she also was in Marching band as well as three other school bands, and participated in some Drama events with me). Though she has her days(which whether we like to admit it or not we all do) where she can be quite the pain, she is most assuredly not the typical cheerleader. But I also know and had later worked with a few girls that matched the typical "popular" cheerleader types who looked down on everyone who did not fit their view of what is "normal" So it is a 50/50 shot on them, just like everyother stereotyped group out there.

That is the best part of college, you do not really get to the point of being locked into specific stereotypes. I mean you do have "popular" people, but in the end they do not have much say because it all comes down to number of credits, GPAs and degrees... more than who is the Cheerleader, Athlete, Goth, Class Clown, Nerd, etc. Those titles pretty much completely lose any so called status that they had in grade school(some colleges/universities may still cling to that but that is often times when you get mixed in with sororities and fraternities. But even then, it seems to be very very very rare).

  5. -improper lane usage (IE Driving down the middle of a street when there is no reason to)

I wish they would enforce this one more here. Regardless of the person being 17 or 70, people here often find it necessary to drive in the middle of the road if it is a two laned road(usually residential sections but nonetheless). I know of a woman in her mid 60's who after four attempts and one accident, finally got in trouble for driving in the middle of the road or swerving into oncoming traffic to cause an accident. How I know??? I was the person she hit. Coming around a blind corner in our neighborhood, she sweved into my lane and I ran off the road to avoid her... but she took out my side view mirror anyhow. Then when the police arrived... she said I was a child who stole a car and was out to get her(btw, other than seeing her car in the neighborhood on occasion, I had never ever met this woman in my life prior to her hitting my car)!!! She got busted on the grounds that all the evidence at the scene proved that she ran into my lane and my car was still almost in the ditch, and my paperwork all proved that I was NOT a child of about 12 but a woman who was 22 1/2 yrs old as well as the fact that the Tracer I was driving was not only my car, but had been owned by me for over 4 years.

The kids are as bad here as the seniors when it comes to this. There are some that are 18 to 60 that will do this, but not nearly as bad as the 16-18 and the 65+group.

  6. You can quote the name of every single episode just by watching the first 10 seconds of the introductory clip

Maybe... at least some of them

When seeing a doctor, you're afraid of getting a shot and ask for a hypospray instead
Oh don't we all wish that.. LOL.

    Your electronic project: Positronic brain
hmmmmm, sounds like an interesting endeavour.

You've learned playing the song "The Inner Light" with a penny whistle
Either on my penny whistle or on my clarinet would be great. Or if my sister learned it on her flute would be cool too!

  7. I know Data was fooling around. I was making comments based on things you said in an attempt to get this thread back on topic. I plead as much guilty as everyone else who took it off topic. I thought your comments made for an interesting discussion which I tried to continued and hoped others would join in.

I am sorry, Takara. I had taken it as that you had thought that I had glazed over everything concerning Data and the trial, instead of turning it into a discussion. I guess I read it wrong, so I apologize if it seems like I kinda snapped a bit harshly or at least seemed like I went heavily defensive. And I can agree about having to plead guilty, since when I made that remark about him deciding on turning his brother into a profit... was meant to be a part of the whole off topic stuff(and I guess at the same time in a way bringing it back on topic)

**I redid mine.. not much of a change, still not posting my name on the boards. Only real change was where they asked me to name my "crush" I actually put his name in instead of saying "I ain't saying". So like I said, checking out my results it did not seem to change the names much.

  9. The Offspring and other episodes such as Silicon Avatar and Clues are what I mean by Starfleet only paying lip service to Data's right, in particular, and android rights, in general.
    Ah, ok.

Data was ordered to hand Lal over to the Admiral against both his and Lal's wishes. Picard belayed that order however the issue wasn't resolved because of Lal's cascade failure. In both Silicon Avatar and Clues Data was threatened with more than disassembly. I recall the threat of stripping him down to his wires being made in Clues.
I already knew this part. The whole him being property thing was merely a remark on the grounds of Data suddenly wishing to make a profit on his brother. Meaning he himself suddenly regarding his brother as property seemed a bit awkward was all. Not whether or not Starfleet would see him as property, though at first or even second or third view one could surmise that the trial was enough to gain rights not only for Data but the rest of his family. So at least the Soong-type androids would have immunity from the rule(of course not the thought as people are free to think whatever they wish) that they are merely property that the Federation could do whatever they want to them. That does get brought up repeatedly in canon and non-canon storylines, so it almost becomes completely obvious that every android we get introduced to Soong type or not would have to go through a similar trial to gain the immunity that Data recieved(and yes I know it is not a complete immunity as the threat was made a time or two to almost completely or completely dismantle him. And if I am correct one or even both cases mentioned, it was Picard who made the threats. Which is way out there on the grounds that it was Picard who defended Data in the trial.. and though not right from the start was later prepared to defend Lal.)

Long story/debate cut short: THe whole property remark was a play on what Data said here about being an Android turned Capitalist, and wishing to make a profit off of his brother's repairs and that was merely all. Not meant to be a strong debate on android rights and whether or not they truly are in effect or not.

  10. Maybe, Data. Hey, wait a sec... wouldn't you then be going against what that trial fought so hard to establish?? The fact that you(and of course the rest of your family) are not property. So if you are trying to make a profit off your brother(or at least his repairs), would you then be saying he is property???  :)

That ruling only seems to apply to Data since they sure didn't apply it to Lore. Is there anything closer to capital punishment than disassembly for an android so they obviously didn't consider that Lore had any rights and only paid lip service to Data and Lal.

    318957

*shrug* I guess that could be true. And I agree that disassembly could equate out to capital punishment for an android. I had figured that the ruling applied to the whole family, especially after the whole situation that occured during "The Offspring"

  11. College is the greatest thing to Experience

    318981

I would have to completely agree. I graduated college the first time in 2000. I am back after a couple year break and am about to graduate twice more (one AS degree and one BS degree...needless to say I am a Senior, credit count wise).

  12. I now have an optical mouse, so I do not require a mousepad. However I still have the one I used to use. It is an image of a tornado and lightning. I think it was basically part of a National Geographic series of mousepads.

  13. man i want a Sonic around here

    318220

Yeah, I was thrilled when they finally built one here. I had always heard about them, but never got to eat at a Sonic.

When I was on my trip to South Florida last weekend, I was getting ready to stop for lunch... I slammed on my breaks a little when I caught the sight of a Sonic out of the corner of my eye. Ended up not going there because I did not want to have to turn around and go back, I traveled for a while longer until I spotted a Woody's Barbeque resteraunt and had lunch there instead.

We grill hamburgers, hot dogs, boneless chicken breast, steak, and brats. Love the steak and hamburgers

I like my burgers medium-rare, real pink on the inside. With pickles, lettuce, mustard, ketchup, onions and sliced cheese.

and I like my steak medium-rare as well. But cooked with garlic salt, oh so good!

Too true here. In the case of the burgers we have them a little more well done than medium rare(since when my sister is over, she hates steak and burgers medium rare. And my brother is the same way). But steak.. for my mother, father and myself it has to be medium rare. In the case of my dad and I, a little more rare than my mother would have....but still in the range of medium rare.

We basically use Nature's Own seasoning.. which has garlic, onion and a bunch of other seasonings too. We use that for pretty much all of the meat we cook whether it be chicken, pork, beef or seafood.

  14. In my case, I adored school. Could not stand some of the people who were in school with me, but that is something that can happen even outside school(like at work).

I still adore school, I am 5 classes short of getting my second degree in College and only a few more from finishing a 3rd degree. But I like my college classes much more than my kindergarten through 12th grade years, much more interesting and much more challenging.

As for friends, yeah I had a couple friends/aquaintances throughout school...more of my friends came from the gymnastics team I was on than school. And I have more people I talk to now that I am in college, I have pretty much always kept to myself when I was in school ( a loner, for lack of a better word)

  15. [but you have to admit lore is hot.

I don't have to respond to that statement. I'll just let my avatar and personal banner say it for me. LOL

Takara, my brother is evil. He needed to be shut off.

    318740

Or his programming checked into to finally figure out what caused him to become the way he is..

    318909

And as you can see from my title ("Android Quality Control Specialist"), I'm just the person to do that. ;)

    318920

    LOL!

I am an Android turned Capitalist. I am going to go to Feregenar and learn how to make profit. Is there any profit in fixing my brother?

Maybe, Data. Hey, wait a sec... wouldn't you then be going against what that trial fought so hard to establish?? The fact that you(and of course the rest of your family) are not property. So if you are trying to make a profit off your brother(or at least his repairs), would you then be saying he is property??? :)
