  1. I had posted this at startrek.com previously but I thought I would get some opinions here too. I have tweeked it a little to take into consideration previous comments. However I think this is further proof that I have way too much time on my hands. :)

In Nemesis Geordi said he thought B4 was a prototype because his neural net was not as sophisticated as Data's but what if Geordi is wrong and B4 was created after Data. Here are my episode references:

    1. In Eye of the Beholder Data talked about his struggles becoming sentient. He said that he had feared cascade failure as new, more sophisticated pathways were created replacing other less sophisticated ones.

    2. In Brothers, if you look closely at one of the tables in Dr. Soong's home you will see android parts on it - a gold hand and a foot - so Dr. Soong must have still been working on building other androids.

    3. In Inheritance Juliana Tainer said that there were three androids that suffered cascade failure before Lore was constructed but she said nothing of any other prototypes.

    So here is my theory:

Dr. Soong constructs the three protoype androids that suffer cascade failure. The prototypes are from Series A. He has designations for these prototypes so they would be A1, A2 and A3 until he finishes constructing them and then he names them.

When the three fail he makes adjustments to his design and starts his B series - B1: Lore; B2: Data; B3: Juliana Tainer and B4. Now B4 was unfinished when Dr. Soong died - fully assembled but without all of the programming. They didn't tell us what happened to Dr. Soong's belongings and research after Brothers so it is possible that B4 was kept in Dr. Soong's lab area or another part of the home that we did not see. Maybe Dr. Soong had been working on B4 when Juliana Tainer left him but then put B4 in "storage" when he started working on the emotion chip for Data. His plan being to complete B4 after giving Data the chip.

Now what if the Remans find Dr. Soong's home on Terlina III and the assembled B4 and take him. In Nemesis Shinzon said they were lucky to find B4 so it is possible that they could have stumbled onto Dr. Soong's lab. We know that they were able to get into Federation space undetected when they planted B4's parts on Kolarus III so it is possible they were in Federation space before that also undetected.

This is just theory and supposition but this scenario does give hope that B4 will one day be a whole lot more than he is now.

  2. I have all 7 seasons on DVD and I love them. I have found the special features in each season to be fun and informative. My favourite episodes from season 3 are probably (in no particular order):

    The Offspring

    Deja Q

    Yesterday's Enterprise

    Best of Both Worlds

    The Most Toys

  3. This is one area that has always bothered me. We were never given a date as to when Lore or Data were created (just Data’s re-activation date). We know from Datalore that Lore lived amongst the colonists but we don’t know for how long before he was disassembled. We also don’t know how much time passed between Lore’s deactivation and Data’s creation but we do know from Brothers that Lore was deactivated before Data’s creation. In Inheritance, Juliana Tainer indicated that Data too had lived amongst the colonists but his memories were wiped out to make room for the colonists’ logs and journals. Why this was necessary was never explained considering the enormous memory storage capacity of Data.

From my calculations there was a great deal of time that Data lived on Omicron Theta. In Birthright when Data discovered his dream program Dr. Soong was described as being 40ish. It is safe to assume that Data was created when Dr. Soong was 40ish. In Brothers Dr. Soong is described as being around 100. So that would mean Data was approximately 60 in Brothers and in his 70’s in Nemesis. This puts his creation date around 2308 and would mean that Data lived with the colonists for approximately 30 years until the entity attacked in approximately 2336 (I believe in DataLore they said that it was 2 years after the distress call was made before Starfleet arrived).

So here’s my problem, if Lore contacted the Crystalline Entity and brought it to Omicron Theta, why did it take over 30 years for it to attack the planet? :)

You can say it now, I have way too much time on my hands. :)

  4. Definitely Star Trek. They have always had science advisors for the franchise and are a lot more careful to get things right scientifically speaking than any other science fiction program. Here is a quote from startrek.com:

    Trek Inspires "Breakthrough" Research

A program at NASA specifically charged with the task of turning science fiction concepts such as those in Star Trek into reality was the topic of a full page article in the Los Angeles Times Wednesday titled "Science by Scotty."

I think Star Trek has been inspiration for so many things in our lives now. Don't you think palm pilots look an awful lot like the pads they have used since the beginning of TNG.

I'd be curious if they took a poll of people working at NASA and in other related fields and individuals studying in those fields how many were inspired by Star Trek to go into science the numbers would be surprising to the general public (but not us).

  5. I think Data was older than 40 years. We never did know when his original activation date was but I make my case based on Birthright and Brothers. In Birthright when Data accesses his dream program Dr. Soong is described as being 40ish. The dream program would have been installed when Data was created. In Brothers Dr. Soong is described as being around 100 so this would mean that Data was actually in his 70's by Nemesis.

  6. I picked the Doctor too. I think his character developed the most over the course of the series. In the beginning he was a tool - barely acknowledged, shown no respect and by the end he was a well rounded individual. I think he was the best individual to help 7 as she had many of the tribulations.

  7. Do you think Worf was a more interesting character on TNG or DS9? I didn't see much of DS9 so I can't compare but I'm curious as to how much his character was fleshed out over there. I assume he was the centre of more storylines at DS9 than TNG as he was brought over there to boost the ratings wasn't he?

  8. I had thought it might be interesting to see younger versions of some of our favourites - maybe Tom Hardy could play a young Picard. I have come to change my mind now though as it would seem very strange to see Picard taking orders rather than giving them especially as he is such a strong character as Captain. As we know from Tapestry he was quite the party animal in his youth.

I think a young Kirk would probably be boring. He was a bookworm in his Academy days wasn't he. Probably took quite a few years for him to become "interesting".

  9. We are forgetting to give some credit to other people as well. I know the theme they used on TNG is different from the familiar music from the movies. The TNG theme was a combination of music by Jerry Goldsmith and Alexander Courage.

It is amazing in this day and age that they would have new scores written for every episode. All of the composers who worked on the series need to be given so much credit.

  10. It's easy to criticize and say it needs something to shake things up but he sure didn't give any suggestions on how to do that.

I still think he seems bitter and has an ego problem especially after his comments at the TV Land Awards (I posted a quote from him in that thread NZtrekkie)

You have certainly come to a friendlier site and I'm sure you will recognize quite a few screen names here. Quite a few refugees from st.com here.

  11. Well, I thought real carefully about this and here's my crew:

    Captain: Captain Jean-Luc Picard

    First Officer: Commander Data

Second Officer: Lt. Cmdr. Soong_girl (well this is a fantasy crew, right)

Doctor: Dr. Kate Pulaski and EMH

    Security: Lt. Cmdr. Tuvok

    Chief Engineer: B’Elanna Torres

Con: Lt. Wesley Crusher (I’m will to give grown-up Wesley a chance)

Ops: Lt. Cmdr. Soong_girl (same reason as previously stated)

    Counselor: Guinan

  12. Thanks that was helpful info (sorry for taking so long to respond, I "forgot where I parked") but I am talking about the ROMULAN DEFECTOR in The Defector you know, that actor whom was the defector.

James Sloyan played the Romulan defector, Jarok, in The Defector. He also played K'mtar in TNG's Firstborn, Dr. Mora Pol in DS9's The Alternate and The Begotten and Ma'bor Jetrel in Voyager's Jetrel

  13. Let me know what you think and why.

Honestly I was really surprised when I listened to Ol' Yellow Eyes is Back. I'm not in to "the standards" so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I liked Brent Spiner's singing in TNG but I was really blown away by the effect the music had on me.

  14. With all 7 seasons of TNG out on DVD and DS9's season 2 about to be released, I'm wondering how many of you have bought some or all of them. For anyone who has both TNG and DS9 DVDs, how do the special features compare?

I have all 7 seasons of TNG and they are worth every cent I spent for them. They are the most watched DVDs in our collection. :)

  15. Okay the poll question didn't show up so I'll repeat it - would you put your birthday in your profile if it didn't include a year? Can someone fix that question part for me?

Like I said, it's a dumb question. I noticed a lot of people don't have their birthdays in their profiles (including me) and I was wondering if they would be more inclined to if the year wasn't included.

  16. For villains its a toss up between Q and Lore (and I chose Q)...but if he was on that list I would have chosen BARCLAY! how could you for get him? How? HOW? (Sorrym lol)

I'll be honest - I forgot about Barclay. I like him too. It is so nice to know that not everyone is perfect in the 24th century and that there are screw-ups like him in Starfleet.
