Mr.Picard 12 Posted October 8, 2003 Where is Patrick Stewart? Just kidding :( Well, they are all great ones, listed there (at least the ones I know of them). I voted for William Shakespeare (I recently watched Romeo and Juliet, and I liked it very much). So... good man with some good ideas :( Mrs. Captain Picard

edmcgon 0 Posted October 10, 2003 Queen Elizabeth I. An example of great leadership. The fact she was a woman only serves to make her accomplishments greater. Also, without her, there might not have been a Shakespeare.

Captain_Smiley 0 Posted October 11, 2003 Benny Hill.I used to watch reruns of his show every night as a kid. There are very few entertainers who, upon hearing of their passings, have made me cry.I cried the day I heard Benny Hill had died.He was a brilliantly funny man,and though I was never fortunate enough to meet him,he seemed like a very sweet natured person as well. captainfreeman 0 Posted October 17, 2003 It was difficult to not vote for Winston Churchill....but I say,William Shakespeare.I mean, the Klingons claim him as their very own!He had to have done something right! B) I watched Churchill's biography yesterday on PBS.He was a brilliant man,but rather cold and prone to dark moods.Still,he was there not only for his country, but for the whole world when we needed him. He's a close second to W.S. TransporterMalfunction 1 Posted January 17, 2004 Other...How could you forget John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, and Terry Gilliam? Not my choice as I got it from a BBC poll after the nation had voted. For the record the order they appear in the poll is the order they finally appeared at the end of the BBC poll, however I would personally place the choices in the following order: 1. Winston Churchill 2. Horatio Nelson 3. William Shakespeare 4. Charles Darwin 5. Isambard Kingdom Brunel 6. Isaac Newton 7. Queen Elizabeth I 8. Oliver Cromwell 9. John Lennon 10. Diana, Princess of Wales For me Churchill had to win as her led us to the British Empire's greatest hour. The difficult choice was who should come second between Nelson and Shakespeare, but I reasoned that had it not been for Nelson then I think we would all have been reading more French literature and the last 200 years would have been very different. The people I don't believe should have been included in the final poll are John Lennon and Diana and Princess of Wales. I say this because I feel people such as John Snow (who discovered the Mode of Communication of Cholera), Alexander Graham Bell, Charles Dickens and David Lloyd George contributed to Britain and the world to such a greater extent. Bethlehem 7 Posted December 10, 2005 I Do not know much about the English, I voted Winston Churchill. Because years ago one of my teachers told the class I was in that Sir Churchill was one of the main people in keeping England Free from Germany.
Theunicornhunter 2 Posted December 10, 2005 It's like the Greatest American poll - what criteria do you use? I would not consider an entertainer a great person - fame does not equal greatness. And, unfortunately I don't know enough about English history to make a really informed decision. IMO, a truly great person is a person who makes personal sacrifices and serves the greater good Based on my limited knowledge I voted Winston Churchill A couple of others for the list: Sir Thomas More William Penn - although his contributions were directed mainly towards America But if I were to add authors I'd have to add C.S. Lewis Jane Austen
mj 7 Posted December 18, 2005 I confess I voted other only because I could not decide between one of the greatest mathematician/scientists of all time ( and one of the inventors of calculus) Sir Isaac Newton, and the immortal bard, William Shakespeare. Two of the most brilliant minds to grace this planet, and today still impacting the intellectual development of human beings.
