  1. You guys need to give people creditt and assume they're not stupid, I'm not saying you think they're stupid.  I've got friends who aren't sci-fi fans, but can keep up with sci-fi movies without getting confused.  I myself prefer an intelligent and complicated sci-fi movie, not a dumbed down action movie.

I think Tommy Lee Jones put it best in Men In Black when he said "A person is smart. People are stupid." (or something like that). I'm sure that you have friends that could follow the movie just fine but I'm afrade that might not apply to "most" people. It's just the sad truth of the world...

I for one agree with you that an intellegent movie would be better then a dumbedown action flick.

  2. "The crew have enterred a "mirror universe", a reallity just like ours, but different."

How is that hard for a non-DS9 fan to understand?

I have no problem understanding it myself but then again I'm a die hard star trek fan. For us things like the mirror universe, clones, and time travel make as much sense as brushing our teeth in the morning. However to the NON-SCI-FI type these concepts are very confusing. The number of people I know who told me that movies like "Total Recall", "12 Monkeys," "fight Club," and even "The Matrix" were really hard to follow makes me believe that a mirror universe story wouldn't go over well. I had no problem following these movies, but that's just how my brain works. We're talking about the people who think of Independance Day and Armagadon as GERAT sci-fi movies. It's sad but the mess public can only handle thinking so much in one movie.

  3. I think it's a great idea for a movie but I also agree with VGB that it would be a lot easier for them to make a Domain/Founder story. Even with a prologue there are too many people out there who would never pick up on the concept of the mirror universe. That is people among the mass movie viewing public and not people of the loyal star trek universe. Which unfortunatly is what the big wigs seem to want movies to be made for, which is why we probably won't get a DS9 movie

    All this being said...

If there really is an alternat universe I would like to believe that in it there is a DS9 movie already in production and that it will be coming out really soon!

  4. I think the only Trek movie that I would consider having a weak soundtrack would have to be Generations. I can't even remember who composed it but it just didn't really move me at all.

I thought it was a very moving soundtrack. Music composed and conducted by Denns McCarthy who has done lots of TNG, DS9, VOY, & ENT music. :wow:

Don't get me wrong, when I say I think it's the weakest (of the 10 films) I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy it. It's a good soundtrack no doubt. I just don't think it stands up to scores done by either Jerry Goldsmith or James Horner. But let's face it, they are very likely the two best compusors working in film these days!

(along with Angelo Badalamenti, John Williams, and Danny Elfman of course.)

  5. I voted "yes, as long as they didn't make a big deal about it."

I will add however that my current girlfriend LOVES Star Trek. And that she is the only person I've ever had a real working relationship with. (all of the other attempts were with girls who didn't get sci-fi).

Though there may be more important things out there it does become a big issue when everytime you want to sit down to watch Star Trek they want to leave the room. I really like that me and my girlfriend can sit down and watch Trek together and that when go out on a date to see a movie we don't have argue over what to see.

Liking Star Trek isn't very important. Personality however is. And let's face it STAR TREK IS A PART OF PERSONALITY!

  6. Nemesis is my favorite of the TNG movie soundtracks. Jerry Goldsmith always does an awesome job. Speaking of Goldsmith has anyone ever looked on www.imdb.com and checked out how many movies he's done? It's pretty amazing.

I think the only Trek movie that I would consider having a weak soundtrack would have to be Generations. I can't even remember who composed it but it just didn't really move me at all.

  7. I think that Spealberg would make a crappy Star Trek film. Don't get me wrong, he's a great director but if he did it then it would become a Steven Spealberg film and NOT a Star Trek film.

Since Nick Meyer has directed the two best trek films to date of course I voted for him. Though I will admit that I would be interested to see what Robert Duncan McNeill would do with a full leangth movie.

  8. The only problem I had with Nemesis was that the Romulans didn't seem very...well,ROMULAN!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. When I got my first good look at a Romulan, my first thought was -

What?!? Nosferatu??? Where's the Romulans?

They just look, (and act) too much like vampires to be Romulan, IMO.

I almost expected them to bite someone on the neck!

    Do you mean the Remans?

  9. SoCalTom, what do you have agianst us misspelling people? i am not gonna take the time to use punctuation and capitalization on a sentence in a forum. i am not being graded. plus, i really dont get how a capitalization makes anything hard to read.

To me, it shows a lack of an education. It shows laziness, poor taste, and poor netiquite.

You're incorrect when you said that you're not being graded. When you submit a paper to an instructor, only one or two other people will see it. When you post something on a message board, the whole world can see it.

The question that I have is: Do you want to show us your true intelligence level, or are you showing it now with poor spelling and punctuation?

I have to say that I take a bit of offense to your remarks (minor of course). I was homeschooled by my mother and was tought the same as all of my broters and sisters but for some reason spelling never clicked for me. In a lot of fields I test far above average but in spelling I always get the D-. It's not because I'm stupid because if it was then I wouldn't do so well in the other areas. And it's not because I had a poor education because both my older brother and younger sister who were also taught by my mother can spell just fine. Everyones brain simply works different. I know plenty of great spellers who can hardly do basic math and would flunk any history, pholisophy, or psycology class.

Also in this day in age of computers and spell check, knowing how to spell perfectly isn't much of an issue. And as for people who have grammer errors on message boards... I really don't care as long as their post makes enough sense to clearly understand.

  10. Is it possible that the Remans come from a combonation of evoloution and mix-breading?

Personaly I'm a big fan of them evolving from the Romulans and looking different as a result of not ever seeing the sun and working in the mines.

  11. I grew up in the country on the outskirts of Norman, Oklahoma and the public school that was in our district was far from high quality. My older brother had lots of problems so my mum decided to start home schooling us the same year I would have entered kindergarten. Because of this I never stepped foot in a real school until I went to college. Though I will admit to certain weak points in my own education I'm still very glade I did it. I've been tested and my brain leans very far to the right side and unfortunately public schools are designed for the left side of the brain. I've always been pretty bright but I completely suck at standardized testing and had I gone to public school I think I would have been a C- student. I have little doubt that by high school I would have stopped caring all together and I may or may not have even kept going to class. I would have most likely developed a very low self esteem and who knows what kind of trouble I would have ended up in.

I say all of this because of the number of people who I personally know who are very much like me that went to public school. They are some of the smartest people I know but they were terrible in school. The public school system needs to be re-designed from the ground up. Because at the moment have an A+ average has little to do with how smart you are and a lot to do with how well you can play the system. I've known way too many idiots who could barely tie their shoes who graduated with honors.

As for Home schooling for religious reasons... Growing up 80% of my friends also home schooled and I would say that most of them did so for religious reasons. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with doing so but since I'm not a very religious person myself I don't recommend it. In many of the cases I've seen about the time the children hit the age of 16 or so they will often reject the religion merely because it has been thrust down their throat so much their entire life. Also since we live in a world that is full of diversity I think that it is important to not blind your children to the world around them and in many cases those who home school for religious reasons are doing just that. If a child is never exposed to people who feel differently then them what will they do when they hit 18 and go away to collage? This is an important question to always keep in mind.
