  1. To answer this question I went to my library and dug out the “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual.”

    10.0 Tactical Systems (Page 85)

The heart of the current system is the zero-point field reaction chamber, a teardrop shaped enclosure fabricated from a single crystal of directionally strengthened rodinium-ditellenite.  The assembly is penetrated by a single opening in the tapered end, cut by a nanometer phaser in an inert atmosphere of argon and neon.  Two jacketing layers, one of synthetic neutronium and another of dilithium, control the upper and lower extremes of the upper energy-field contours.  Attached to the taper opening is a zero-point initiator consisting of an EM rectifier, wave guide bundle, subspace field amplifier, and continuum distortion emitter.  The emitter created the actual pinch field from a conical spike 10^-16 meters across the tip.

The zero-point initiator is powered by the detonation of an upraised photon torpedo warhead with a yield of 21.8 isotons, achieved through increased matter-antimatter surface area contact and introduction of fluoronetic vapor. The matter-antimatter reaction occurs at four times the rate of a standard warhead.  The detonation energy is channeled through the initiator within 10^-7 seconds and energizes the emitter, which imparts a tension force upon the vacuum domain. As the vacuum membrane expands, over a period of 10^-4 seconds, an energy potential equivalent to at least 50 isotons is created.  This energy is held by the chamber for 10^-8 seconds and is then released by the controlled failure of the chamber wall.

  2. I have been gaming for over 10 years. I still play Dungeons And Dragons (now 3rd Edition), D20 Modern, and Vampire: The Masquerade. I have played Alternity, Stardrive, Werewolf: Apocylapse, Mage: The Assention, and Mutants & Masterminds. I have lots and lots of RPG books and still enjoy writing campaigns for weekly sessions with my gaming crew.

IMO, RPG's are one of the best forms of entertainment.

  3. Mr. President. I can parallel with what you are saying...

I would urge anyone that hasn't given the show a chance by at least watching 1 or 2 to give it a chance. If you don't like it after seeing a couple and you still hate it I can respect that, just don't shoot it down before giving it a shot.

However… I can not parallel with you on the following section…

If you want to learn about human interactions in extreme situations I think Survivor is a good show to watch. It is manipulated through editing of course but that doesn't change the actions and reactions of the people in the video.

I think that the Eco Challenge is a better representation of human interactions in extreme situations. If you have not heard of this endurance race (or seen broadcasts of the competitions on television) I implore you to keep an eye out for it. Team members must overcome numerous hardships and work together in very difficult situations to make it to the end of the race.

Now while Survivor is a test to make it to the end of the game by completing puzzles, working with team members, and completing other activities. I do not see the player’s situations as being all that extreme or difficult.

My money is on the Eco Challenge for true interactions in extreme situations.

  4. You're right, phasers aren't invented till the 23rd century.  They use phase pistols. :) As for laser weapons, um...  We already know lasers can't be used like that so it'd be retarded to have Archer and crew use laser pistols.

What do you mean that lasers can not be used as weaponry? If you think this then you are sadly mistaken. Lasers can be used as weaponry. Surely you have heard of SDI (Star Wars Defense Initiative). The technology is there.

  5. I don’t think that there are too many errors so far, but remember that there is a lot of conjecture in this period of Star Trek, and not a lot of fact. So who cares if the writers take the conjecture and give it form.

A good example is the movie First Contact...

Before the eight Star Trek movie… the year of First Contact had been established as 2061. This number was derived from the back story in The Original Series Episode “Metamorphosis.” Since there had been no viewing of this event "officially" in a series (or movie) then this information was conjectural. After the movie, the date had been set as 2063 and conjecture was turned into fact.

And if you "really" want to get technical, the NX Enterprise looks nothing like the Enterprise shown on the recreation deck of the Enterprise refit in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."

My point: Quit sweating the small stuff, and let the writers of Enterprise develop this unknown section of timeline.

  6. Deep Space Nine.

I was hooked on the series from the first episode. I loved this Trek because it took the time to develop it's own races... (Bajoran, Jem-Hadar, Shapeshifters..) as well as cultures. This series went far beyond the realm of exploration, it created characters that were bold and fun.

  7. I didn't vote for any of the characters on your list because my favorite on screen kiss by an ST actore wasn't listed.  My favorite on screen kiss was between Jadzia and Lenara Kahn in Rejoined. I'm glad that the writers and producers explored an issue that was so contraversial. In one way, it wasn't really two women kissing at all but rather, the symbionts' previous hosts resuming a relationship that was ended so suddenly years earlier. Even though I'm not a lesbian myself, I have no problems with other people that want to pursue a same sex relationship. Rejoined would have to be one of my favorite Star Trek episodes.

I think this was the first time that a kiss was shared between two women and aired on television. I love how Star Trek is so diverse and non-stereotypical.

    Madam Captain out!!

Rejoined is one of my favorite DS9 episodes and also contains my vote for the most passionate kiss on Star Trek: Jadzia and Lenara. One thing that I loved about Deep Space Nine was the character development and this episode did a great job filling in some backstory of the Jadiza Dax character played by Terry Farrell.

Also did you know that LeVar Burton directed this episode?

  8. My favorite episdoes.... Let's see...

The Inner Light. I love this episode because Picard always has wondered what life would have been like if he had of had a family instead of joining Starfleet. Plus the musical score for this epidsode is great. I love the reed that he plays and the melody that plays all through out the ep. A classic.

  9. No, no, no. The best enterprise is the NX-01, with E close behind. The A isnt bad neither is the D.  But I do agree that the Enterprise B was crap.

I can not agree with you about the Enterprise B. All of the Enterprise classes served their purposes well... "To Further The Exploration Of The Galaxy." While her first captain (John Harriman) might have been a dumb arse, the Enterprise B was and is a elegant design.
