  1. This is from the Houston Chronicle, dated 1 February 2005:

HEMPHILL - John "Squeaky" Starr Jr. dressed in a suit and tie to carry the remains of Columbia astronauts out of the thick woods here two years ago.

Last week, he wore dirty bib overalls to carve a granite monument to their memory.

The space shuttle Columbia disintegrated 200,000 feet above East Texas on Feb. 1, 2003, killing its seven-member crew and scattering debris for hundreds of miles from Fort Worth to Louisiana. This tiny town of about 1,100 was ground zero for the recovery of astronauts' remains and shuttle debris.

"I haven't forgotten," said Starr, 58, owner of Starr Funeral Home here. "It's a matter of history here. Sometimes I catch myself riding by some of the places (where remains were found) and thinking about the astronauts."

To commemorate the disaster, the Sabine County Columbia Memorial Committee, a nonprofit group, plans to dedicate two gray, solid granite memorial markers during a ceremony here today. Also planned was a moment of silence about 8 a.m., about the time Columbia was lost, minutes before it was to land in Florida.

There were other memorials in East Texas as well.

  2. Here is a news photo and caption in rememberence of the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia:

  3. I'd like to see the Eagles win their first Super Bowl. However, I don't think it will be this year. The Pats look pretty dominating. Brady hasn't lost a post season game yet. But then the Red Sox weren't supposed to win, either. So maybe the T.O. -less Eagles can pullout an upset . It ought to be an exciting game, eitherway. B)

  4. The 2 teams that I have heard mentioned most often are Minnesota (their owner wants to sell the team) and the Arizona Cardinals, though they have only been in Arizona for about 20 years after moving from St. Louis (St. Louis is the city that the last Los Angeles team, the Rams moved to).

VBG, its been announced in the local news about a possible sale of the Vikings by current owner Red McCombs to either Reggie Fowler, an Arizona businessman, or to Glen Taylor, owner of the Timberwolves NBA franchise and a Minnesotan. It will be interesting to see how this develops as it would cetainly affect Coach Mike Tice's status. And perhaps Randy Moss. Former Viking Cris Carter allegedly said on Sirius radio that " [a]s a matter of fact, I'm going to go on record and say that Randy Moss has played his last game in Minnesota..." . So there could be major changes with the Purple Gang by August.

  5. Congrats, VBG! The Eagles played a good game. The Vikings did not have there "A" game that day, tho not to take anything away from the Eagles. It could have been a more entertaining game had the Purple Gang put out the kind of performance that downed the Pack last week. Oh, well. There is always next year. Good luck to your team. They will need to be in top form when they play the Steelers next week!

  6. The Peewee B hockey club, to which Luke belongs, just finished their home tournament, called "Fire on Ice". Of the three games played by his team, the first one against Blaine was the best. This was a team ranked 8th in the state of Minnesota (Peewee B level)! Our guys and gal kept the score low 3-2. My son had a chance for a third goal, but was tripped up, or so he says. :nono: The other two games, against lesser talented teams, our team choked, and were shut out each time. Rather frustrating as a parent to see them do so well, actually their best game of the year, to falling back into the doldrums, playing what one described as "toilet bowl hockey". B) . Off to another tournament this weekend. Woo hoo! :waaaa:

  7. 'm just hoping my Eagles can come out after a couple weeks of resting and smoke the Vikings.

Woo hoo! The Vikes embarassed the "cheddarheads"! Now its off to play the vaunted Eagles, who won't be soaring as high w/o the T.O. in their ranks. But I don't think the outcome will be any different. As much as I'd love to see an upset, the Eagles are too good a team for the 8-8 Vikings. The win over the Pack was fueled by a lot of emotion, a desire for revenge. I don't see how they can drum up that kind of energy, even with Moss and Crew wearing the afros. <<< very odd! Good luck to both teams! :waaaa:

  8. Congradulations to my Canadien friends and fellow trekkies! I'm glad that there is something to cheer about in the world of hockey! LOL! Minnesota has twice recently hosted a major hockey event, the NHL All-Star Game of last year, and now the World Junior Hockey Championships. That is pretty neat! Ya, you betcha! B)

  9. Our PeeWee hockey team actually won a couple of games over the holidays! Woohoo! Unfortunately, Luke and I were out of town, and so we missed the thrills. Tonight we drove to Rochester. Lost 7-0. Although, we held them to a single goal by the end of the first period. Our team made several shots-on-goal, one of them even hit the upright of the goal. Aww, so close! :) Luke made several good checks on the other team, as did some of our other players. I think they are starting to see that "aiming for the player" , not "aiming for the puck" , works much better. Let your teammate recover the puck.

This weekend is our tournament. Some doofus in our organization lined us up to play Blaine in our first game. Blaine just happens to be 9th in the state - ! Oh boy, that game could be embarrassing! And I'm running the clock/ scorekeeper. I'll have a front row seat to a massacre!! Hehehe. Oh well, what can I say? Three of the other teams that we may face are just as good ~~ why could't we have invited teams that we has some chance of beating? I mean, heck, it is our tournament. ~~ One good thing about tomorrow: the boss is gone - WooHoo!!

  10. Horrible, isn't it? I recall seeing photos of Banda Aceh on the Google News link, and it's shocking to see the vast amount of damage. Large chunks of the city are completely gone! And the latest estimates of 125K dead is too great for me to comprehend. I need to be less complaining and more thankful. I take too much for granted.

BTW, thanks VBG for the pics! :)

  11. I watched it on DVD, also recently. The "Director's Cut" version. As TUH ^^^ noted, it is bloodly, and perhaps tame to what it may have actually been like. I guess there really was a knights-at-the-round-table. BTW, I liked it. Gueniverre(sp?) was not who I'd have imagined her to be. A sort of Xena-like character. B)

  12. There is a big difference.  At your age the feeling is "Hooray!  I survived another year!"  At my age the feeling is "How much did my 401(k) loose this year?"  B)

Please note the  B)  symbol which makes this post exempt from retribution from mods and members alike.

    B) I have an upcoming birthday, and that would place me, I think, between LVR and BB in age ~~ I'll be 47 ~~ so I don't know whether to be glum B) or ready to do a happy dance B) ! Whatever. B)

  13. Someone on "starshipmodeler.com" had a similar idea.

That guy built the spacedock around the ship using old plastic crate palettes.

    Looked pretty cool.

Very impressive, King! Which reminds me, I have a model of the Enterprise - D still unassembled. I keep putting it off. :assimilated:
