  1. I suppose it's for the same reasons we name high schools after Robert E. Lee.  All emotions and personal feelings aside, he was a great general.  He might have been fighting for slavery and disconnection from the United States, but he was a great military leader.  I figure he deserves a few high schools and maybe even a starship named after him.

I'm with VaBeachGuy on this one.  These people/things are all very historical, and perhaps in the future they look upon history as just... history.

I suppose so.Still,it is unfortunate.Maybe I'm not advanced enough yet, being a 21st century human to be all that forgiving of past injustices. As far as I'm concerned Robert E. Lee was as bad a traitor as Benedict Arnold,if not worse.I think his lofty plateau in American history owes more to our placating a defeated (and still bitter) south than anything spectacular he did on the battlefield.Being a student of the civil war myself,I've come to the conclusion that Lee's victories owed as much to Union incompetence as with his own tactical proficiency.

  2. Apparently, there are a few voters here in California who actually use their brains when considering which candidate to vote for during an election!I know,I'm totally shocked! I saw a poll a few moments ago that showed, that among registered voters in the state of California, the Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamente actually has a slim but growing lead over Arnold Schwarzenegger.Should Gray Davis be successfully recalled, political analysts say Cruz will beat Arnie. The reason? Most polled said they favored Cruz's years of political experience. Also,Arnold's refusal (so far) to state his positions on a number of key issues is turning some voters off.Of course, polls are pretty meaningless, and the collective opinions of media analysts don't mean much more than squat, but it gives me a little hope. Not that I'm in love with the idea of another Democrat sitting in the state house, but, given the choice Cruz is the lesser of two evils. :)

  3. Wow.That's terrible, though I'm happy to hear he is okay.I had been wondering where he'd gone. For a few days we had been trading messages back and forth, discussing Enterprise and its merits(or lack, thereof) and then he just went silent.I thought that maybe I'd upset him with my anti-Ent views...I hope he gets back home soon and will pray for a speedy recovery!

  4. Leave the star wars smilie.I hate this whole star trek vs star wars thing. Its stupid.I like both.Whats next?Maybe someone will object to the batman smilie,or the ninja turtle.Lets not forget the american flag smilie(does the US still exist in Trek ?).I'm being sarcastic, but really,do not remove any of the smilies.None of them are objectionable.

  5. An Interesting debate.I personally think that until we learn to take care of Mother Earth(and we are a long way away from being that mature),then we have no business mucking about on other worlds. If non-intelligent lifeforms are found on Mars(or Europa,or anywhere),then certainly steps should be taken to limit the amount of damage we cause to them by our presence. However, they're presence should not halt our efforts to study and better understand the world they inhabit,or other worlds.

  6. I just saw T'Pol's new look at startrekweb.com. B) She looks GOOD!!!!! :(

And the uniform looks familiar, almost like the uniforms used in Star Trek:TMP.I love the Ent-TMP link,it's great!Keep on Trekkin! B)

I agree with you, nephew.T'Pol looks great, and I love the new uniform. It does look like a variant of something out of Star Trek:TMP.Its great!I just have one question, where in the @!#!!*$ did you find that avatar? B)

  7. There is no reason to assume the series would not have gone past 1969. Ok it didn't go past 1969 even with Shatner but still....If Star Trek had sold as it originally was, hunter's destiny would have been different. He would not have die filming "Viva America" because he would have been filming Trek and would have been in a compleatly different place.  Assumingly. B)

Exactly the point I was trying to get across :( .

  8. I loved the idea! It was very fitting, that is why I wanted share this with everyone.

Side note:if you scroll down a bit..I also really like the new planetary moon names, in particular Saturn's. It is so great to finally see Scandinavian/Germanic mythology being used for names(Ymir, Suttung, et al.) as well as Celtic(Albriorix)

Agreed. It is getting a little boring with all the greek mythology names.I'd also like to see more chinese and ancient native american names, both cultures practiced astronomy of one sort or the other.Maybe even native australian names, too. B)

  9. I finally watched it this morning.Hated it. :( The Romulans looked like sissy's compared to their previous appearances on Star Trek, and they were acting like good guys!I hate that!!!The Romulans are major villains! B) Their alliance with the UFP and Klingons during the Dominion War was one of necessity. They hate the Federation.I hope and pray Star Trek's powers-that-be do not reduce the already slimming ranks of the Federation's enemies by making the Romulans reformed ex-enemies.Who would be left? The Breen, the Tholians,and...? B)

  10. Maybe those were the only Japanese names the writers knew and they're pretending some other great leaders with those names will emerge in the ensuing centuries.

That makes sense,I guess.I hope that's what was going on.I'd hate to think they named the ships after those vessels on purpose! B)

  11. San Francisco.I go to Fisherman's Wharf several times a year and I always have a great time. There's just so much to do.And most of the people you meet are very friendly, unlike down in Los Angeles.New Orleans is also wonderful.I haven't been to too many other big cities. B)

  12. I am totally unprepared for a major disaster.Though, short of Kim Il-Jung launching North Korean nukes at central California,I can't say a major disaster is very likely.Fresno is,perhaps, the most geologically stable region of the state(very few quakes, and those tend to be minor). As for bad weather,we just don't get it as intense as you folks down south and back east.I can remember big storms in Louisiana and I have to laugh when somebody here in Fresno complains about the little cloudbursts we get on occasion. B)

  13. It does seem a bit of a "double standard" though that you would be a fan with these Japanese names on the ships when it could be argued that they were even more guilty of atrocities then were the Germans. Yet if a few German names are used you would refuse to watch.

First,to breencommander,I'm impressed,Kid.Second,in response to Va Beach Guy,breencommander only recently got into Trek with the debut of Enterprise and he doesn't really care for the previous series'.As I don't watch Enterprise, perhaps he'd know more about this than me,but I don't believe that series has ever shown a Starfleet vessel named after an Imperial japanese warship. Therefore the kid isn't using double standards. He means what he said.If a USS Goerbles ever gets launched,he'd drop Enterprise in a second. If this makes him more of an Ent fan, than a Star Trek fan, then it does.

  14. I saw this question posted at startrek.com a month ago.It was an interesting question, and actually managed to gather in a few insightful replies before the usual gang of idiots started in with their $!#@%.Thought I'd ask it here and see what responses all of us have.

Now the question was,"Why do the people involved with Star Trek name starships like the Yamato and Akagi after infamous Imperial Japanese naval vessels."The person who posted the question was japanese and was against naming the starships in honor of these warships. The Imperial Japanese government was every bit as brutal and merciless(if not more so) than the Third Reich in Germany.Millions of asians, including japanese were murdered by the Imperial Japanese government. Now,we don't have starships named Goering,Rommel,or Bismarck, and with good reason. So,why Yamato and Akagi?

I understand that in the 24th-century a lot of time has passed, and in time we tend to forget the horrors of past conflicts. But,surely the actions of the Nazi's and Imperial Japanese during WWII were so reprehensible that even after hundreds of years, they would be remembered with disgust.

Is it okay to name Starfleet vessels after ships used by the Imperial Japanese and/or Nazi Germany? Is all forgiven and forgotten?Should it be?
