1. Oh, yeah, I want to go out and throw women into a bottomless pit full of bubbles. Because I'm a manly man!

    337497

Hey! Some of those bubbles have corners you know! That makes it a whole different ba... Er... Bubble game!

(I don't think you're meant to think about it much really...)

  2. Congratulations indeed, and good show for the other four contenders. Maybe this time we'll be able to win some medals.

I am concerned about the long term problems the 'Olympic legacy' may pose, like the ones that have befallen Sydney and Athens. An example is that after the Olympic Games have finished, the various new buildings and parks have run up colossal debts. I must admit that I don't know a great deal about the london bid; hopefully they've prepared for every eventuality.

In any case, Paris in 2016!

  3. *edits out reply on patriotism to prevent hypocrisy*

This isn't the place to discuss the merits and faults of patriotism. It would be a very interesting topic to debate, but this isn't the place for it. This is about a possible new 'XYZ day' on this forum, and I don't want to veer off-topic from that just yet.

(Besides, I tend to agree with Marxists regarding nations, so you can probably guess what my feelings on patriotism are )

EDIT* Woo! I made Captain! Now I get a funky office, and my own private toilet...

  4. Great Britain and England aren't the same thing Jim. (Former's a grouping of semi-unified countries, the other is a country within that group)

No, there isn't one special day of celebration. I don't think it's so much due to it being seen as racist, but that generally as a society patriotism, with a few blatant exceptions, is rather looked down upon here. If we had one at STF.net, maybe it would catch on?

  5. Guy Fawkes night? As far as I can remember that's celebrating the failure of Catholic conspirers to murder the King and Parliament. It's got nothing to do with the founding of Great Britain, though it's great fun despite this flaw.

I would of course not be churlish and accept a single day personally. You can't help not being British and all that, it would be wrong to rub it in...

  6. Following the festive Canadian and American (Well, you know what I mean, Fourth of July) days, I've been wondering why we don't have a Great Britain Day? Has this idea never arisen before, or has it been considered and dropped, and if so why?

I'm not particularly anxious for one, but I think it'd be good fun and since we already have the US and Canada, it only seems logical to have a British day as well.

If we were to have one, wink wink, I'd suggest it be on the 26th of March, the day the first Act of Union creating the Kingdom of Great Britain came into play. (There was a second, more expansive one which created the Britain we know of today, but since that took effect on the 1st of January its not really an option...)

  7. Here's an interesting and unbiased histroical narrative on the revolutionary war that I found. ('Tis from Wikipedia)

    War of Independence (1774–1783)

There were many causes that led to the American Revolutionary War, but political tensions between Great Britain and her colonies became a crisis in 1774 when the British placed the province of Massachusetts under martial law. While shooting began at Lexington and Concord in 1775, the Continental Congress appointed George Washington as commander-in-chief of the newly created Continental Army, which was augmented throughout the war by colonial militia. General Washington was no great battlefield tactician—he lost more battles than he won—but his overall strategy proved to be sound: keep the army intact, wear down British resolve, and avoid decisive battles except to exploit enemy mistakes.

The British, for their part, lacked both a unified command and a clear strategy for winning. With the use of the Royal Navy, the British were able to capture coastal cities, but control of the countryside eluded them. An invasion from Canada in 1777 ended with the disastrous surrender of a British army at Saratoga. France entered the war against Great Britain after Saratoga, finally convinced that the Americans could actually win.

The involvement of France (and then Spain) greatly complicated the British war effort. A shift in focus to the southern American colonies resulted in a string of victories for the British, but guerilla warfare and the tenacity of General Nathanael Greene's army prevented the British from making strategic headway. A French naval victory in the Chesapeake finally offered the chance Washington had long waited for, and a British army was trapped and compelled to surrender at Yorktown in 1781, leading to the Treaty of Paris in 1783 that recognized the independence of the United States.

Since many Americans of the revolutionary generation had a strong distrust of permanent (or "standing") armies, the Continental Army was quickly disbanded after the Revolution. General Washington, who throughout the war deferred to elected officials, averted a potential crisis and submitted his resignation as commander-in-chief to Congress after the war, establishing a tradition of civil control of the U.S. military.

(Now I'll try to stop ruining the party mood. Congrats on your birthday!)

  8. Nordic: If you're interested, I'm pretty sure the fate of the Bozeman crew, or at least Captain Bateson, is discussed in a book or book series.

    336200

    *is interested*

Thank you, I would be actually, the Bozeman is a bit like the Titanic for me. What happened? Did they run into ice? And so forth...

Takara; thanks as well! So, at least it's known that they stayed in the TNG timeline and had some adventures... I don't know why they couldn't have just mentioned this directly during or after C&E, making me look like a foolish fool and all... (Because that's the only reason they made TNG, obviously... B))

  9. They also guaranteed the moon landings. NASA lies!

I wish the mission good luck, hopefully it'll give us a lot of new information. I also doubt there is any chance this comet will be redirected towards Earth, our solar system is huge.

  10. I think we see a lot of enlisted people in DS9 and Voyager. They're just almost always in the background as extras, and only very occasionally are brought to the viewers attention. However, I can recall one episode in each series where enlisted crewmembers were major characters in the story. (I can't remember the DS9 one offhand, but the VOY episode was 'Good Shepard')

  11. Here are some fantastic Star Trek flash games, you can fend off Romulans in the NX-01, reclaim the Alpha Quadrant from the Dominion and even take a trip through the Mirror Universe! I believe you now have to register to access the games, but they're well worth the 6.4 seconds spent.

They can be played online or downloaded for free, some of them are breathtakingly in-depth and can be rather addictive if you let them be. Finally, some decent trek flash games to while away the hours on.

  12. Deja vu is the feeling that you have been or experienced something before. In this case I had, but I'd totally forgotten all about the topics I made two years ago. I think my exact thoughts were, "Oh... Cool!" :P

  13. Does anyone else occasionally re-read old topics that they made? I browsed through some of mine just now, it gave me a really weird feeling of deja vu but it was also really interesting. It was almost like reading a time capsule and seeing how you've changed as a person as time passed, some of them were from more then two years ago.

    So, anyone else? :P

  14. Wesley was an incredibly annoying character for me. I wasn't fazed by his repeated savings of the ship, I didn't even notice it until I came here :P, I simply had major problems with his character.

I think that the idea of all the main characters being written so they had no major faults or flaws as people did work well for the adult crew, but it just didn't work with Wesley, particularly in the first few seasons. Teenage males are nothing but flaws and contradictions!
