  2. Firstly, let me apologize for the delay. Real life got in the way.

Secondly, this is Star Trek Actor/Director week. Basically, I give you the name of a Star Trek actor, you tell me an episode (no movies) that that actor directed. In some cases, there will be many, in others only a few.

  3. Robert Picardo (The EMH) did the voice bit as Johnny Cab in "Total Recall"

And played Some type of Security Man in the Film :Gremlins 2 The New Batch

  5. From the imdb:

Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams is hitting back at unauthorized reports he is directing the next Star Trek movie. The Alias creator is furious the news was released prematurely and is also upset that key details regarding the storyline were incorrectly reported. He explains to Empire online, "The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation. People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumors of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate." Last week, Hollywood trade paper Variety, reported Abrams was on board and that the film would center on the early days of Captain James T. Kirk and Spock and that Philip Seymour Hoffman was in talks to play the ship's doctor. Abrams won't reveal the true storyline, but hints that it won't feature characters Captain James T. Kirk or Mr. Spock at all, but doesn't rule out bringing some of the original characters back for the new film, adding, "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that..you know, they could live again."

I'm sure Vic will report this soon but I thought I'd get a jump on it.

So, Abrams is involved but is not necessarily the director and the young Kirk and Spock thing isn't the storyline.

Overall, good news, frankly I don't care if Abrams directs or not, but the Kirk/Spock academy thing was something I could live with, not that I necessarily wanted. So as long as he adheres to Star Trek canon, which if he's doing a new story won't be too big of a deal, I'm happy. No reboots!

And the fact that he says 'our permission' suggests that the other people (Lindelof, Burk, Orci and Kurtzman) who were mentioned are still involved which is good.

The Hoffman thing seems to be just a rumour but it would be pretty cool if it did occur.

Oh, and Startrek.com is confirming this story, except for the Hoffman thing.

  6. How do you do a Constitution-class ship in CGI? Or are they going to break out the old one, with the fishing line, and drag it across the screen? Same thing with the sets - blinking lights, or full-color computer displays? They're either going to have to abandon all the advances in filmmaking and truly make another 60s movie (or 80s movie)... but the coin counters also realize that CGI sells. Their best bet for making a Trek prequel is to put Kirk and Spock into something which somehow shames every ship, including Voyager and the Enterprise-E (while selling it as a 23rd century ship), but doesn't have a holodeck, or replicators, or anything else Picard's crew took for granted. It's going to look silly. But it just might sell. I think, to true fans (either fans of TOS, TNG, DS9, or just of the whole franchise), it'll be a farce at best.

A CGI Constitution class ship has appeared in three Enterprise episodes: Both parts of In A Mirror, Darkly and These are the Voyages. And I'm surprised you forgot Trials and Tribble-ations (DS9).

They actually rebuilt the Constitution bridge for In A Mirror, Darkly Parts I and II and it looked very good.

But there is no guarantee we even see the Enterprise or a Constitution-class ship in this proposed, which gives the writers some freedom.

Granted, this is not my favour concept for a movie, but really, before we can move forward with a new series or another concept, the franchise needs to prove that it is still financially viable, otherwise there is no incentive for Paramount to go forward with anything.

  7. So, the Enterprise would be at leat 7 years old before Spock even started the Academy? I thought Robert April had the Enterprise for one 5 year mission and then Pike took over. Spock served 13 years on the Enterprise before Kirk took over. Something doesn't seem right.

While I'm not entirely sure, I believe Spock served under Pike for 11 years and a little more. So if Kirk's first five years mission begins in 2266, we can assume that Pike commanded 2 five missions back to 2256 (accounting for ten of Spock's years). The Cage is in 2254 so ifs its late in 2254 we can assume that it is one of Spock's early missions under the command of Pike.

Now, it hard to say if Pike commanded 3 full five year missions (with Spock becoming science officer late in the first) beginning in 2250 or if Pike assumed command during a second five year mission by Captain April.

Now if Spock's first assignment is the Enterprise in 2254 or so, that would give him a start date in the Academy of 2250 or 2249 (which is often given) and his birth date would be 2230 (provided he enters after the Vulcan equivalent of high school). Canon establishes Kirk's birth year as 2233 which would give him an Academy start date in 2252 (when Spock would be in third year). So they likely were at the Academy together.

Spock graduates in 2253 and is assigned to the Enterprise in 2254, one of his first missions is Talos IV. He then serves under Pike for two subsequent two year missions (2256-2265).

Kirk graduates in 2256, serves aboard the Farragut and Republic, eventually attaining command of the Enterprise in 2266.

  8. there were rumors in the past of T'Pol making an appearance in the next film, and since the next film is a prequel film, it is possible that T'Pol would show up in this film. Could we actually see an older T'Pol in the upcoming movie? Being a fan of ENT, I would love to see T'Pol in the next film. If for no other reason than to make the ENT fans happy. I think fellow ENT fans that are signing the ENT DVD petition would be very happy if T'Pol were in the film.

Archer could also be included in the film as well. According to his profile on "In A Mirror, Darkly", Archer didn't die until the day after NCC-1701 was christened at the age of 133. So both could make an appearance, but I doubt Archer will. If anybody, it's going to be T'Pol.

T'pol, maybe as an academy instructor or something.

Archer would be dead. The NCC-1701 was commissioned in 2245, Kirk and Spock wouldn't be attending the academy until at least 2252 and 2249, respectively.

  9. I can't see how any of those people could possibly be in it unless its a cameo playing another character.

I can see the surviving members of the original cast being involved if they frame the whole thing in sort of a flashback. I've been thinking that if they focus on a memorial service after Kirk was lost on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B, they could work in Nimoy, Takei, Nichols, and Koenig. Then have Spock remember when he first met Kirk at the academy. Corny but I think it could work out nicely, I can already see a very cool ending:

Have Spock be the last one to leave the service. He places his hand on the casket (standing in for Kirk's body) and he says: "You have been, and always will be, my friend". It's been used before but it brings in a nice symmetry.

I think the concept behind this film is workable (especially with such a talented production and writing staff)but they need to stick to established canon and I think these guys are smart enough to do that (as they do come across as Star Trek fans).
