  1. I don't think Sarek would have made it as far in Vulcan society as he did if he'd come from questionable lineage such as T'Pol - and as far as Vulcan standards - she was questionable. - with her mind meld disease, her affinity for humans etc.

I also don't think a child of TPol would be as strict in adhering to Vulcan tradition as Sarek was - he most likely came from a very traditional Vulcan family.

And since I never really liked the character T'Pol - I'm happier thinking she was in no way related to Spock.

I don't think T'Pau was related to Spock - but I did like the young T'Pau.

  2. I'd like to know a little more - were they helping the little old ladies cross the street in a crosswalk with the right of way?

Or were they helping the ladies jaywalk - ie cross in a place where motorists had no expectation they'd be there? and thus increasing hte likelihood of an accident?

I know, it's so easy not to take jaywalking seriously, but jaywalkers do cause accidents.

  3. In my county they give free breakfast to all the kids not just income based.

My relative with the four kids makes four lunches every night. People can feed their kids without going bankrupt

Yes, this article makes it sound sad and there are some kids that truly are hungry and that is sad. But too often "I can't afford it" means I'd rather spend my money on toys and let the taxpayer pay for necessities. You have to wonder how many of these parents have cable, cells phones and beer for the weekend but can't "afford" to feed their kids.

  4. It is strange that some people never get called. In FL they used to just used voter registration (some people wouldn't register to vote because they didn't want to do jury duty) but then they added all licensed drivers. I've been called to appear but did get selected. They called about ten times the amount they needed.

  5. Let's put it into perspective by a little history - the purpose of tort law (civil as opposed to criminal cases) was to let citizens police certain bhaviors and keep law enforcement agencies out of it. And in some cases - like neighbors disputing the placement of a fence - the theory seems valid. But I think product liability lawsuits may have outgrown that usefulness.

Tort law came into its own in the US with the advent of railroads (okay who's going to pay for the farm field burned by stray sparks from the smokestack). And it has mushroomed ever since. Sometimes companies really deserve to be sued - and on top of damages courts will award punitive damages to punish the "evil doer" - this really results in an unfair windfall to that particular plaintiff while others equally damaged may get nothing.

My personal opinion is that some of these cases need to go back to the criminal side - ie rather than individuals repeatedly sueing the same company - I think it would be more economical for the state to pursue those who are truly acting in bad faith - have them pay a fine and divvy it up between everyone injured. This is the theory behind class action lawsuits. Most people probably get some sort of notice at one time or another that they're a member of a class action lawsuit but it's probably not anything anyone cares about. I know there was one about what companies charged for CDs (the music kind).

There was a time when lawyers were prohibited from advertising.

My personal opinion (and this will surprise some of you) but IMO the legal profession is the one profession that should be socialized - ie all lawyers were paid the same salary by the state and all citizens had a right to to legal counsel. Yeah, it will never fly - after all the majority of those who write our laws and serve in congress are lawyers.

And one cheerful thought - the number one target of malpractice suits is not doctors - it's lawyers.

  6. Since this is the cotton candy factory - the idea was to give clues that were easy to find an answer to - some clues are clearly a reference to one and only one specific show - which kind of stalls the game unless someone happens to watch that specific show.

So unless it is a city like LA or NYNY it's better to use a larger reference. As for Canada - how many Americans do you think know all the provinces and territories much less individual cities? We know Vancouver because that's where so many tv series are filmed. :)

And is Eureka set in Oregon - I didn't think it ever said for certain if it was OR, WA or Northern CA?

  7. Usually on the weekends I catch up with the week's tv shows - so it seemed like pick on Trekkies week.

On Numb3rs - some help desk receptioniss says the only thing she knows about the tech guy was he cursed in Vulcan and when he got his car towed she had to stifle a "What would Spock do?" Cursing in Klingon maybe - but cursing in Vulcan?

Then on Law & Order there's this internet vigilante group and one defense attorney says - "These people put trekkies to shame" I guess he was making a cult reference - and then when the DA insults the defense attorney's ethics she says "live long and prosper"

Usually trek references are good (my favorite was the CSI discussion about green blood) but this week was kind of rude....

  8. I saw something about a man with really long nails before - and it took special care - like wrapping them up to avoid breakage etc the constant diligence to protect them would require a lot of sacrifices. And the truth is there are things you can't do with long nails - no amount of adapting will change that.

I remember once, ironically in Salt Lake City, seeing a store clerk with really long nails and I commented that she had really long nails and she said "thank you" - and I thought I didn't actually compliment them just noted they were long - then she said what caused to always remember that conversation - "yes, I had to give up playing the piano" and remember walking away thinking what a waste.

  9. Probably most of you have read about the two satellites that collided over Siberia (is Siberia the "Devils Triangle of Astronomy - there was that explosion in 1908). I had read before about the large volume of space debris orbiting the planet. The debris from this latest crash could potentially damage or destroy remaining satellites. But even without this latest crash it's getting crowded up there and without some measures - future rocket launches could be in jeopardy from space debris?

So, how would you handle cleaning up the debris?

  10. You just gotta look at the picturefoxnews

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah woman listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for her long fingernails has lost them in a car crash.

Redmond's nails, which hadn't been cut since 1979, were broken in the crash. According to the Guinness Web site, her nails measured a total of more than 28 feet long in 2008, with the longest nail on her right thumb at 2 feet, 11 inches.

Can I just say what a way to waste your life - think of how much this woman missed out on by having those nails

How'd she comb her hair or put on make-up - engage in any regular physical activity; or in more indelicate matters - how'd she grab the roll of Charmin?

  11. Never Heard of it

Eureka - is a currently on air program (or at least I think it is coming back for another season on Scifi.) It's worth checking out - it can best be described as a scifi dramedy - a secret town on the cutting edge of scientific research - with quirky characters and a semi-reluctant sheriff.

Let's pick up with something easy =

Miami (there are several - at least two currently on the air)

  12. My guess is that is a clue for one specific show - which really wasn't my intent by starting this game - by picking places like Nevada or Miami - there are several possible answers - so you just pick one and leave the next clue. I even did an internet search to see if I could find a show based in Eureka, CA.

The series Eureka is never specific about what state it is in - and it is a fictional Eureka regardless.
