  1. Box Office Mojo has international box office figures now. As of Thursday, the domestic box office is just over $104.6 million and the international box office is just over $49.2 million. The total box office to date is $153,875,505.

Interesting that you say "Domestic" there when it is for both the U.S. and Canada but a few years ago you were ready to throw a live grenade at me when I said that Canadians were Americans... :superhappy:

  2. Actually, having a cadet being advanced from Cadet to Captain (skipping Ensign, Lieutenant., Lt. Commander and Commander) and being given command of the fleets brand spanking new flagship is pretty inconceivable. Not to mention the fact that he was a Cadet that was placed on academic suspension and the way things were looking was about to be expelled. lol

Yeah, I don't think he was gonna be expelled. He did do the exact same thing that Kirk Prime did on the test and he didn't get expelled. Even McCoy said the board would most likely have decided in his favour.

That's a point open for each person to contemplate of course but if we look at modern day military academies and use them as a "guide", expulsion for cheating is the norm. That's not to say it's set in stone of course, but it was looking that way to me.

That point aside though, taking the assumption that he would not be expelled it would still be inconceivable to see a cadet go from Cadet to Captain of the fleets flagship in the blink of an eye. I'd be interested in their explanation about how that happened. I understand why they did it, just like with Delta-Vega the writer said in that interview "we just moved the planet" (or words to that effect).

It's not a real big deal, it's just a movie and not reality. But just one of those little annoyances, something they they easily could have avoided if they cared to.

  3. Something always bugged me about all the rapid rises in rank. The whole young-people-in-space thing seemed too familiar as a plot. I couldn't articulate it at the time, but I figured it out.

It was the line when that flying motorcycle cop called boy Kirk "citizen" that gave me a clue. Where else have we seen a militaristic-type space movie with young people getting rapid promotions?

Then it hit me. Starship Troopers! This is really just a rehashing of the basic Starship Troopers plot points set in the Star Trek universe!

I suppose there are some similarities. But overall this movie is just better than Starship Troopers on every conceivable level.

I thought I saw a dozen ships escaping Kelvin including James and his mother? Was Riker's Grandfather still on the ship or was he on one of the fleeing ships????? If so he could of survived right???

No, I was just teasing Mandy to momentarily make her think that Riker was never born. To the best of my memory Riker was never even mentioned in the movie.

  5. Well, I saw it again. It isn't as exciting seeing it again.

One thing I did notice this time around: What the heck is Chekov's function on the ship? On the Enterprise Prime he was more or less the security chief / tactical officer, and nobody seems to be in that role in the movie. We see some redshirts more than others but nobody seems to be in charge of the security force.

OK, he is some kind of math whiz, but then so is Spock. And he seems to know a lot about transporters, but then so does Scotty. He is apparently in charge of internal communications, but Uhura is more than capable of this.

One other thing I didn't get: At the close of the movie everyone seems to be more or less at the same ranks they were in TOS, so why did they all have to get back into Cadet uniforms just to see Kirk get a medal? Shouldn't they just have worn their ship uniforms?

And Cadets getting hammered in a bar in uniform? What is that about?

How about a Cadet going from Cadet to Captain of the Federation flagship? That's like a Cadet from West Point graduating and becoming a Brigade commander of a frontline combat uint.

  7. HEY ALL ITS GREAT TO BE BACK!!!!

My thoughts... Well, I give it a 4... It seems the things I felt at the end of the movie was a sentiment shared by others...

Continuity: This isnt your father's star trek because it just isn't... Aside from a revamp of the characters, canon was thrown out the window with the destruction of Vulcan... I could almost rationalize it all up to that point... But now its just a parallel universe... No different than the Terran Empire Mirror Universe

But truth be told, we need this.. BAD... If there was ever a thing that could bring our established canon universe back to the small screen and on the big screen, a hundred million new fans will do it... Ultimately, the Star Trek Franchise is a business... With more fans, comes more money and therefore, new possibilities... So for that simple fact, STXI has won my loyal support....

Welcome back! How long has it been?

  8. So is it really not worth it to see Star Trek on the IMAX, then? There's an AMC theatres with an IMAX screen near me that I was planning on hitting up this weekend. But from what I heard here, it wouldn't be a real IMAX screen...

What I'd do is call them and ask them how big the screen is in comparison to a regular screen. Or even ask the usher if, before you buy a ticket if he or she would walk you into the theatre to see what it looks like because you want to see if it's worth your time and money.

That's what I'm going to do before I pay.

  9. I've never seen anythinng in IMAX. I didn't even know the screens were supposed to be bigger.

This should give you an idea of a real IMAX screen...

    Fake by my standards.

What you're talking about though isn't a screen though, it's a celing lol.

I actually don't think I'd want to watch a movie on the celing, but that's just me and of course I've never seen one likt that so I don't know.

Starship Enterprise in holding pattern over Neonopolis

    By John Katsilometes · May 5, 2009 · 5:59 PM

The once-optimistic plans to open phases of Star Trek Experience at Neonopolis in concert with the new “Star Trek” movie on a single date -- May 8 -- have been beamed to some far-off galaxy. The Experience won’t open until 2010 at the earliest, Rohit Joshi, head of the development company that owns Neonopolis, confirmed today. He added that the exhibit will not open in phases, but as a single entity. A few hours later, the wily entrepreneur also confirmed that Galaxy Neonopolis 11 movie theaters are closing as of Friday, and that he would reopen the cineplex, often as vacant as the sparsely inhabited planets favored by Captain Kirk, once it has been remodeled.

Joshi has not yet said why the theaters need to be renovated starting on the very day the “Star Trek” film is set to open, or who would manage the remodeled theater complex when (or maybe, if) it reopens. One published report indicated that Galaxy was pulling out of Neonopolis because bills for the complex’s centralized air conditioning system went unpaid, and Galaxy was unwilling to continue reimbursing customers’ parking fees by validating tickets from the Neonopolis garage. But Joshi’s account is that the theaters are to be remodeled as part of Neonopolis’ grand renovation project, which could be finished in a matter of months or maybe eons, when “Star Trek XXX: Grandson of Spock” hits theaters.

Regardless, what was to be a triumphant week at Neonopolis with the arrival of the Star Trek brand (in the form of a restaurant/tavern and gift shop) in tandem with the heavily attended premiere of the new Trek film is instead another dull weekend at the retail and entertainment complex. For the foreseeable future, Neonopolis will be absent a movie theater and without any semblance of its Star Trek attraction. Customarily, Joshi promises “great stuff” from the Star Trek Experience but can’t specify what the stuff will be or how it will be shaped. It will be huge, he says. There will be a new concept, he claims.

A spokesman for CBS, which owns the Star Trek title licensing rights, today said in an e-mail that no solid opening date has been set because the exhibit is still in development. Sort of like Neonopolis itself, where progress is not quite measured at warp speed.

That sucks, I was thinking about making a trip out there again this year to see the new one.

  11. I haven't seen Mandy this excited about Star Trek in quite some time, Kelly too. So if I have to live with a few minor annoyances to get them excited about Star Trek again, it's ok with me.

:superhappy: It has been a while since I was really excited about Trek. I'm also thrilled to see so many people I know who have never been into Trek who LOVE this movie.

Also, am I the only one who loves Chekov? Who cares if his hair isn't the same, he's just adorable. And as for him being "too smart" or whatever in this movie, please, maybe they didn't show his intelligence enough in TOS but he didn't get on the bridge of the Enterprise at a young age by being a dummy.

Of all the characters, my mother hated Chekov lol. Well, hated may be a little strong. Didn't care for Chekov.

I don't like the age thing, that's one of my little annoyances that I have to live with though lol.

    Wow that brings back memories!

Yeah, it's one of my favorite songs of theirs. In fact I'm listening to it again right now.

  13. I've watched it a couple more times and while I still can't say that I'm 100% satisfied I can say I'm somewhere between 95% and 99%. There are still a few points that I'm annoyed about and while some say that the Alternate Timeline can explain those things away, I still believe it was just either a lack of attention to detail or a matter of making things fit even though they didn't just because they wanted/needed them to fit.

I can live with it (I can just hear Ben Sisko from "In the Pale Moonlight" looking into the camera and saying "I can live with it..." lol). So while I'm not as excited as others about the movie, I am excited that others are excited. I haven't seen Mandy this excited about Star Trek in quite some time, Kelly too. So if I have to live with a few minor annoyances to get them excited about Star Trek again, it's ok with me.

For now, I think we should all just enjoy the public attention while it's there. Let the excitement ride the wave and then debate the "detail issues" later when the movie hits DVD.

  14. I'm feeling a strong urge to chop my hair into a pixie cut and dye it a weird color. :superhappy: Think I might do that this weekend. I'm bored to tears with longish hair.

If you do that you'll just regret it later. You've been growing your natural color out for how long now and now you want to dye it?

Come on now, let's keep things appropriate.... and Off Topic...

Well if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black.

It's ok for me though, I was in an Alternate Timeline...

  15. I can't believe I forgot about this, but it's another thing that was annoying...

    Click for Spoiler:

Obvious product placement! I liked the song playing during Kirk's "scenic drive", but the glaringly obvious Nokia product placement was distracting. I don't recall any product placement in other Trek movies.

I spotted that too and rolled my eyes at it. lol

Ok, even I, who loves this movie with a passion, thought that was silly.

See? We do agree on the movie! lol

lol at least on one thing anyway :superhappy:

Well we've sort of hijacked the thread.. but on more than one thing lol. Despite what Alterego might think, I liked the movie a whole lot. I just also have that "strict canonist" side of me too lol.

  17. I encourage everyone that sees the movie to write a review of the movie (using spoiler boxes of course). If you hated the movie then be totally open and honest in your opinions, if you loved it then again be totally open and honest. Don't hold anything back.

What I do ask though is that when discussing the movie in various threads, please keep it friendly and don't ridicule someone because they have a different opinion. If you hated it and someone else loved it, that's ok. Everyone has different opinions and different likes. We can discuss our different opinions without putting each other down and telling someone that they aren't a "real Trek fan" because they liked or disliked what they saw.

Let's openly discuss it without putting each other down please.
