Toddler Found Playing Along Interstate

AP

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 31) - Drivers swerved cars and trucks into other lanes to avoid a 3-year-old boy, wearing only a diaper and T-shirt, who was playing along a busy highway after wandering away from home while his mother slept, police said.

Some motorists stopped along Interstate 465 on the city's west side Saturday to take care of the boy until officers arrived, the Indiana State Police said.

"I looked up and I seen this little ... boy running down the middle of the slow lane in the interstate. I just could not believe what I was seeing," said Troy Crady, one of those who stopped to help.

The boy, Damon Dyer, was unscathed as at least a half-dozen cars and a tractor-trailer rig swerved into other lanes to avoid him. Temperatures were in the mid 50s as the boy ran around barefooted.

Police said they traced the toddler to an apartment at a nearby complex, where they found his mother, Nancy Dyer asleep in a filthy apartment and his 2-year-old sister eating spaghetti off the floor.

Dyer, 33, was arrested on two counts of child neglect and remained in custody Sunday, officials said.

Senior State Trooper Cedric Merritt said that when Dyer was told of her son's activities, she responded: "Oh, he got out again."

Investigators said the boy got out his second-story apartment, went down stairs and got around a fence to reach the highway about 200 yards away.

Child Protective Services took the boy and his sister into custody, and investigators said the agency also had been called to the apartment Thursday because the boy was outside unsupervised.

Making her run down a busy highway half naked and at night with a blindfold on would be seen by some as to harsh but i think it would be fitting punishmemt for such a crime,i amazed this toddler was not killed.

Sadly such neglect does happen. In a community where I used to work, a preschooler kept popping into the nearest McDonald's from a couple blocks away repeatedly, with the parent totally unaware that the child had left the house. But wandering on the highway is in a whole different category. :yucky:

2 Mothers, Daughters Arrested for Brawl Outside School

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

E-MAIL STORY PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

WOONSOCKET, Rhode Island — Two mothers and their 13-year-old daughters were arrested after police say one woman drove her already suspended daughter to school to fight a teenage rival.

Ana Rivera, 44, and Maribel Santiago, 34, are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on a charge of simple assault in connection with Monday's fight. Their daughters and two other 13-year-old girls were charged with disorderly conduct and their cases were turned over to the Juvenile Detective Division.

Rivera allegedly drove her daughter to Woonsocket Middle School so she could fight Santiago's daughter.

Police reports say the girls began feuding two weeks ago and began fighting outside the school on Monday. At one point, the melee involved all four girls, both mothers and a teacher, according to police.

Authorities said a teacher tried to break up the fight and was hit by Santiago.

Santiago and Rivera were released on $1,000 bail Monday evening, but Detective Lt. Timothy Paul said the department intends to notify the state Department of Children, Youth and Families about Rivera's case.

Santiago, reached at home Wednesday, said she went to the school to pick up her daughter because of recent threats. She said she apologized to the school's principal and was only trying to protect her daughter. Her daughter was suspended from school for 10 days after the fight.

"I just wanted to make sure my daughter stayed out of trouble," Santiago said.

Rivera could not be reached for comment and it was unclear if she has an attorney.

Nice job, Mom..........

Ugh... Why can't people just get along?

Because there's too many stupid people in this world.

Ugh, why can't people just be soo stupid that they have to get along. Seriously, if everyone was incredibly dumb, we would have the intelligence to fight, we ended up hitting ourselves instead....it'd be world peace.

More Charges For Alleged Party Mom

Ann Walker-Vogt Allegedly Had Sex With Two Other Minors Weeks Ago At Another Party

Slideshow Of The Day

(AP) GRAYSON, Calif. The 35-year-old woman who was arrested in front of her police officer husband and three children Friday on allegations that she bought beer for a teenage party and had sex with at least one minor is facing additional charges.

Ann J. Walker-Vogt of Grayson was charged with two counts of unlawful sex with a minor and 12 counts of child endangerment, all felonies, as well as six misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor -- all stemming from a recent party at her home. But now, she faces two more counts of unlawful sex with two other minors during a party at her home a few weeks ago.

Stanislaus County authorities would not immediately say where or when the acts allegedly occurred, or whether the sex charges alleged two acts with one youth or if she had sex with more than one teenager.

Walker-Vogt is accused of buying alcohol for a group of Patterson teens after a high school basketball game on Jan. 19. The occasion was a party at her home to celebrate the return of her 16-year-old son, who had been in Oklahoma.

She allegedly told the teens they would have to leave before 3 a.m. because her husband, David Walker, an Atwater police officer, was due home from work.

Authorities say she paid one boy $50 to drive 11 other teens home in his sport utility vehicle. He crashed four miles away, injuring everyone in the vehicle.

The felony endangerment counts stem from Walker-Vogt's decision to let the teens drive home, while the delinquency counts allege she bought alcohol for the youths, said Sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.

Some of the parents are considering suing Walker-Vogt. One of the crash victims fractured his skull and a woman passenger had spinal injuries, parents said, while the others were hurt less seriously.

Robert Garcia, the 18-year-old who crashed while ferrying the other teens, is charged with felony drunken driving.

Walker Vogt is expected to appear before a judge at a Stanislaus County Courthouse on Tuesday between 1 and 4:30 p.m.

Dad Accused of Using Stun Gun on Baby

AP

ALBANY, Ore. (Feb. 5) - An Albany father used a 100,000-volt stun gun on his 18-month-old son, police said Monday. Rian Whittman, 23, has been accused of assault and criminal mistreatment. Police said he used it "multiple times" over three weeks. A police spokesman said there were up to 10 instances.

Police said Whittman's wife, 21, who was not named, reported the abuse on Saturday.

The child was treated at a hospital, police said, and then taken into protective custody by the state Department of Human Services.

Capt. Eric Carter said the police haven't established a motive for the abuse, nor why it began about three weeks ago.

He said the device was not a Taser weapon, named for the manufacturer, but an older model that's applied directly to someone's skin.

Cops Say Dad Admits Poisoning Kids' Soup

AP

ATLANTA (Jan. 7) - A man admitted Tuesday that he tampered with his children's soup in an attempt to get money from Campbell Soup Co., a prosecutor said.

William Allen Cunningham's 3-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter were hospitalized twice in January 2006. He forced them first to eat soup laced with hot peppers and lighter fluid, and the second time used the prescription drugs Prozac and Amitriptyline - both used to treat depression - to poison the children, authorities said.

Cunningham, 41, pleaded guilty to communicating false claims, U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said. Under terms of a plea agreement, he faces up to five years in federal prison when he is sentenced April 19.

"He admitted that he put potentially life-threatening foreign substances into soup, which he fed to his two young children and then placed a call to Campbell Soup Co. falsely claiming that the soup had been contaminated," Nahmias said.

According to prosecutors, Cunningham called Campbell and threatened to sue. Authorities say there was no evidence the soup was tainted when it was bought.

Mother kept girls locked away from the world for seven yearsBojan Pancevski in Vienna

Three girls who were imprisoned by their mother in a house of indescribable filth for seven years may never recover from the ordeal, experts said last night.

The girls were shut away from the outside world, existing in almost complete darkness, playing only with mice and communicating in their own language.

When they were discovered, their home in a smart, upper middle-class suburb had no running water and was filled with waste and excrement a metre high. The floor was corroded by mice urine.

The case has stunned Austria, still reeling from the Natascha Kampusch kidnapping, and the authorities were struggling last night to explain how such a horror story could have gone unnoticed.

The girls’ ordeal was apparently sparked by their parents’ divorce, after which their mother, a 53-year-old lawyer, suffered a breakdown. But she won custody of the girls — then aged 7, 11 and 13 — and withdrew them from school, claiming that she would give them private tuition at home.

Her husband, a local judge in Linz, Upper Austria, named only as Andreas M, was not allowed to see them once, despite his claims for access reaching court nine times.

The girls, Viktoria, Katharina and Elisabeth, were rescued only when police broke into the house after a neighbour, who had reported his suspicions several times, threatened a local council official with a lawsuit.

Although that was in October 2005, and the three have been in a specialised therapy centre since, the scandal was only revealed at the weekend.

The mother is now being held in a special remand prison branch for the mentally unstable. She will appear in court in a few weeks on charges of grievous bodily harm and torture, and is facing between five months and five years in prison.

She had ensured that the blinds were constantly shut, and that all but one light bulb had been removed in the house. When they were released, the three victims had white skin and could not endure exposure to natural light.

Authorities are now under fire for failing to have intervened sooner, despite repeated complaints by neighbours in the well-to-do Poestlingberg.

The mother was said to have been summoned to court nine times during the seven years after complaints by the father and neighbours, but officials never found a reason to investigate the case more closely.

Waltraud Kubelka, a therapist who is now treating the three girls, said that their psycho-social and physical development was “catastrophic”.

“The oldest one is doing very badly and has no prospects of recovery. She was severely undernourished and practically anorexic after her release. The two younger ones will need years to come to terms with their horrific childhood.

“In the first weeks after their release they were hiding under a bench in the kitchen [in the therapy centre] because that was the darkest spot. They could not endure light . . . they had not felt sunlight or fresh air for years.”

It is believed that the children had contact only with their mother during the seven years of captivity and, as a consequence, developed an almost unintelligible language of their own, described as a “singing-like” form of German.

Even after a year of therapy the oldest daughter, Elisabeth, now 21, is said to be so disturbed that she stands only on one foot for long periods staring at the floor. She often bursts into tears.

She and her two sisters also reportedly finish all sentences with the word “but”.

But according to her carers, the youngest of the three, Viktoria, could soon be discharged from therapy to join her father, who now is in constant contact with his daughters.

A council official said that authorities had had no knowledge of the “truly catastrophic” conditions.

The mother’s legal training and knowledge of the law has reportedly enabled her to postpone the trial. The case will he heard in front of a court in Klagenfurt in the next weeks, as both she and her husband are well known in the legal community of Linz.

Natascha Kampusch was held for eight years by Wolf-gang Priklopil, before escaping. Priklopil snatched her on her way to school when she was ten and kept her captive in a subterranean dungeon under his house near Vienna for eight years.

Professor Max Friedrich, a child psychiatrist who treated Ms Kampusch, said that the two cases should not be compared.

“This is entirely different, when the mother herself is the captor. It is tragic that the one person that commands full trust is misguided in that way. I do not envy their therapists.”

Woman Gets 15 Years for Starving Son

AP

CORTLAND, N.Y. (Feb. 20) - A woman was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for starving her 5-year-old handicapped son, who weighed just 15 pounds when he was found in a playpen infested with cockroaches and lice.

Judy Gratton, 49, was convicted in January of assault and other offenses.

The boy, Harley Morgan, has Down syndrome. Several doctors testified that he had been starved for several months and was near death. A typical 5-year-old should weigh about 40 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Gratton and her live-in boyfriend, Joseph Kahn, were arrested during a drug raid at her home last March.

Two of the endangering charges involved Gratton's older children, a 12-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy who also were malnourished.

State investigators found that the Cortland County Department of Social Services missed repeated opportunities to prevent harm to the boy. County social workers made at least nine home and school visits in the six months before the raid.

Kahn, 45, pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and possession of marijuana, and was sentenced to nine months in jail.

Man Sentenced for Alleged Sex Pact

AP

MUSKEGON, MI (March 25) - A man who pleaded no contest to entering into a sex pact with his girlfriend and her 15-year-old daughter and to having had sex with a 12-year-old relative was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison.

Michael J. Fitzgibbon, 37, was sentenced Friday to up to 15 years for each of four counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct after prosecutors said he, his girlfriend and her daughter signed a contract allowing the teen to be his sex partner for two months.

He was also sentenced to 12 to 25 years for each of two charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for having sex with the 12-year-old girl. All six sentences are to be served concurrently.

Fitzgibbon pleaded no contest to the charges last month. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated the same way for sentencing purposes.

The case arose after Fitzgibbon's girlfriend, afraid of losing him while she was recuperating from surgery, allegedly arranged for the Fitzgibbon, herself and her daughter to sign a contract in June. In exchange for sex, the 15-year-old testified she was to be paid and receive privileges, such as piercings, hair dyeing and permission to stay overnight with her own boyfriend.

The girlfriend, whose name is not being made public to protect her daughter's identity, has been charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person 13 to 15 years old and is scheduled to stand trial in April.

Authorities investigated after the 15-year-old told a relative in July. The 12-year-old came forward after charges were filed.

Mother Allegedly Offered 7-Year-Old for Sex

AP

TAYLOR, Mich. (April 1) - A 33-year-old woman faced arraignment Sunday on charges alleging she offered to let an undercover investigator take pornographic photos of her 7-year-old daughter and have sex with the girl, authorities said.

The woman was arrested Friday after taking the girl to a hotel in Romulus, near Detroit Metropolitan Airport, where she had agreed to meet the investigator, the Wayne County sheriff's department said.

Authorities said the woman offered to let the investigator take the photos for a fee and, when she met with him, discussed being paid in exchange for sex with the child, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"This is truly a horrifying case," Sheriff Warren Evans said in a statement. "To think that a woman would offer up her own daughter in this way impossible to comprehend."

The girl and her four siblings, ages 12, 11, 9 and 6, all were in protective custody, Roach said.

The name of the woman, who lives in this Detroit suburb, wasn't being released to avoid identifying the child, the sheriff's department said.

She faced five charges, including child sexually abusive behavior, illegal use of the Internet for child sexually abusive actions or materials and distribution of child sexually abusive material, said department spokesman John Roach.

She also was charged with prostitution, since the department said she propositioned the investigator herself. The department said the woman advertised herself online as a prostitute.

If convicted, she could get up 20 years in prison.

Angry Mom Drops Off Child on Interstate

AP

LINCOLN, Neb. (April 17) - An angry soccer mom who left her teenage daughter alongside an interstate was ticketed for neglect, Lincoln police said Tuesday. Police spokeswoman Katherine Finnell confirmed this account from police reports:

The 42-year-old Lincoln mom was miffed about her daughter's poor play on Saturday.

On their drive home the girl flubbed the lines her mom had drilled into her on how to improve her game, so the mother slapped her daughter.

The girl told her mom to pull over. The mom did, near the downtown Lincoln exit off Interstate 80.

The mom yelled at the girl to get out. When she did, her mom drove off.

A teammate's parent spotted the girl alongside the interstate, stopped to pick her up, then took her to their home and called police.

What a great Mom..... :P
