Man's trip through metal detector turns up drugs

AP

Posted: 2008-04-18 17:02:42

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Dothan man attempting to report to his probation officer and pay some fines was re-arrested when he emptied his pockets for a metal detector at the Houston County Courthouse and laid out more than the usual coins and keys.

Two baggies full of marijuana came out, too, authorities said.

Malcom Williams, 51, tried to escape when the drugs appeared Thursday, but he was caught after a minor struggle and a failed attempt to Taser him, sheriff's officers said.

"He reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful with change, U.S. currency, keys, and the marijuana was evident in his hand," Houston County Sheriff's Capt. Antonio Gonzalez said Friday. "Every now and then you have somebody who forgets what he had in his pockets."

Sheriff's Investigator Rick Clemmons said deputies had to shackle Williams instead of handcuffing him because his arm was in a sling with a cast on it.

Williams was being held in the Houston County Jail without bond for violating his probation. He pleaded guilty to felony third-degree escape in April 2007, according to court records.

It was not immediately clear if Williams had a lawyer Friday.

Minor league hockey player charged after caught streaking

Tue Apr 29, 9:10 PM ET

SCRANTON, Pa. - The captain of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins was charged with indecent exposure after a police officer saw him running naked on a downtown street early Sunday, and a teammate was arrested for public drunkenness. Nathan Smith told the officer he acted on a bet.

Officials said Smith, a center for the AHL team, was charged with misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure, open lewdness and disorderly conduct, as well as public drunkenness. He was released on $10,000 bail.

Penguins forward Ryan Stone was charged with public drunkenness.

The American Hockey League team suspended Smith for its second-round home playoff game Thursday. It was not immediately clear how Stone would be disciplined but the team said he would not be suspended.

"I would like to apologize to the people of Northeast Pennsylvania, my teammates, and to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Pittsburgh Penguins organizations," Smith said in a statement. "I made an embarrassing and regrettable decision this weekend and understand I will face disciplinary action. My conduct was unacceptable and totally out of character — it will not happen again. I promise to do my best to win back your trust and support."

Stone's arrest was his second this season for public drunkenness. He was cited for the same charge in October, pleaded guilty and paid a fine.

Man faces fireworks charges in blasts that worried Md. town

AP

Posted: 2008-04-30 11:10:44

PIKESVILLE, Md. (AP) - Mysterious middle-of-the-night blasts and flashes of light had residents puzzled for months - and now a man has been charged with fireworks-related violations.

Frederick Lee Mackler, 59, was being held on $1 million bail, facing charges of possession of fireworks without a permit, reckless endangerment and controlled dangerous substance violations.

The arrest, announced Tuesday, came days after police in the Baltimore suburb set up cameras and recorded the flashes that lit up an area the size of a football field. After examining shadows created by the explosions and other clues, police concluded they came from Mackler's fourth-floor condominium.

Investigators later searched Mackler's home and found pyrotechnics, illegal narcotics and firearms, authorities said. Officials did not return calls Wednesday morning seeking an update on his status.

Neighbors said they had heard the noises repeatedly since September, always between midnight and dawn and accompanied by bright flashes. Neighbor Barbara Friedman said the first time she heard the blast she thought someone was shooting at her.

Utility workers had ruled out electrical problems or gas leaks that could explain the problem. Police had also looked in vain for burn marks on the ground.

Did this moron REALLY think he wouldn't eventually be caught?....... :)

In an interview with the Reading Eagle, Messerly denied climbing onto the roof. He said he was adjusting lumber that had come loose when he was thrown from the vehicle. He said he stripped naked to check himself for injuries.

Man trying to cash $360 billion check arrested in Fort Worth

AP

Posted: 2008-05-01 18:22:38

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Charles Ray Fuller must have been planning one big record company.

The 21-year-old North Texas man was arrested last week for trying to cash a $360 billion check, saying he wanted to start a record business. Tellers at the Fort Worth bank were immediately suspicious - perhaps the 10 zeros on a personal check tipped them off.

Fuller, of suburban Crowley, was arrested on a forgery charge. He was released after posting $3,750 bail.

Fuller said his girlfriend's mother gave him the check to start a record business. But bank employees who contacted the account's owner said the woman told them she did not give him permission to take or cash the check.

In addition to the forgery count, Fuller was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon and possessing marijuana. Officers reported finding less than two ounces of marijuana and a .25-caliber handgun and magazine in his pockets.

Pa. women robbed of purses; show police suspect's photo

AP

BENSALEM, Pa. (AP) - Police had no trouble tracking down a suspect in the robbery of three women at a Bucks County convenience store. They had taken the man's picture a short time earlier as he socialized with them at a bar.

Police say Andre Smith struck up a conversation with the women at the Bensalem Township taproom early Sunday morning.

Public Safety Director Fred Harran says the women snapped pictures of themselves with Smith, but he later was ejected from the bar for allegedly harassing customers.

Then, police say, when the women stopped by a convenience store, Smith robbed them of their pocketbooks.

The women showed police the pictures from the bar, and officers arrested Smith at his apartment. He is being held on $50,000 bail, charged with robbery and theft.

Another winner!

Ark. burglar done in by half-eaten Snickers bar

AP

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - A Snickers bar did in one Arkansas burglar.

Police in Jonesboro say Brian D. Bass, 39, left the half-eaten candy bar on a counter at the Cato Animal Hospital during a Jan. 24 robbery. Detective Jason Simpkins says police sent the chocolate and peanut treat to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock, where scientists pulled off a DNA sample.

Simpkins says that sample matched Bass, who now faces felony commercial burglary and theft charges. Sheriff's deputies said Bass remained in Craighead County jail Friday in lieu of $50,000 bond.

However, the Snickers bar apparently did not alleviate Bass' hunger.

"It was also discovered that the suspect involved ate two cans of Vienna sausages," Simpkins said.

Firearms instructor accidentally discharges gun during weapons safety class

AP

Posted: 2008-05-20 08:37:03

NEW BEDFORD, Massachusetts (AP) - A firearms instructor in southern Massachusetts has been assigned to other duties after his gun accidentally went off while he was teaching a class on weapons safety.

Officials say the Glock handgun discharged while Maj. Donald Lamar was demonstrating to Bristol County deputy sheriffs how to safely holster the weapon.

The bullet ripped a hole in Lamar's pants but missed his leg and foot.

Sheriff Thomas Hodgson says the officer made a "gross error in judgment" by not emptying the weapon before the class last week.

Lamar, a certified firearms instructor since 2005, was transferred to another division and will not carry a firearm while the incident is being investigated.

Report: New Zealand man caught trying to buy snacks with marijuana instead of cash

AP

Posted: 2008-05-20 01:03:48

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - A New Zealand man who offered to pay with marijuana when he did not have enough money for a snack was caught by a police officer who overheard his unusual proposal, a news report said Tuesday.

Wade Churchward, 28, went to a service station on March 22 in the capital, Wellington, where he picked up two packets of M&Ms candy and some potato chips, the Dominion Post newspaper reported.

Churchward, who had been drinking, began snacking on the goods while standing in line at the cash register.

But when he reached the cashier, he realized he did not have enough money, and instead offered a container with 0.042 ounces of marijuana and a pipe for smoking it.

Churchward failed to notice a patrol car parked outside and a police officer standing behind him in line - who promptly arrested him.

He pleaded guilty Monday in Masterton District Court to possessing marijuana and to several unrelated charges, the newspaper said.

Masterton police prosecutions section staff were unavailable Tuesday to confirm the details.

Churchward was released on bail and will be sentenced on July 3. Marijuana possession is usually punished by a minor fine in New Zealand.

HUGHES, Ark. (AP) - Police didn't have to look too hard to figure out the source of a soda vending machine found in a front yard - they just followed the tracks.

Deputies from the St. Francis County sheriff's office spotted a Pepsi machine on Thursday in the yard of a home in Hughes. A set of dolly tracks in front of the machine led back to a liquor store less than a mile away that had reported it missing.

Two men in the yard fled when authorities arrived. One was arrested on suspicion of theft, fleeing on foot and obstructing government operations. The other remains at large.

About 1,800 residents live in Hughes, about 30 miles southwest of Memphis, Tenn.

Man sets blaze while trying to kill pesky bees

AP

Posted: 2008-06-05 18:50:55

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Joshua Mullen just wanted to kill the bees swarming around his utility shed. When Mullen, 26, walked away from the gasoline-soaked towels he was using, he heard a "whoosh" and turned around to see the shed in flames that spread to his rented home and wound up causing some $80,000 in damage.

"There were no injuries, unless you count the bees," Mobile Fire-Rescue spokesman Steve Huffman said.

Huffman said the fire appears to have started when the pilot light of a hot-water heater in the shed ignited fumes from the gas.

Mullen, who rented the home after his Biloxi, Miss., residence was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, said he had poured gas on some towels the bees were swarming around and then walked away to pick up some trash in the yard.

He managed to get his fiancee and 1-year-old daughter safely out of the house. The blaze was hot enough that it melted some plastic blinds through a closed window on a neighbor's house.

A trained mechanic, Mullen said he has been trained on gasoline flash points and flammability but didn't expect the gas to put off enough fumes to catch fire.

"Looking at all this, there might have been a better way," Mullen said while a few surviving bees buzzed around the ashes of the shed. "It was a mistake. I wish I hadn't done it, but I did."

AP

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) - Marcus George complied with the law when he reported to a parole officer shortly after his release from prison. Police said he erred, however, when he drove to the meeting in a stolen car.

George, 20, was released on parole last week after serving time on burglary and theft convictions.

The pair also reportedly stole a Dodge Charger from a dealership in Sherwood - the car George was driving when he showed up to meet with his parole officer in Pine Bluff.

George was arrested at the parole office on suspicion of theft by receiving and theft of property.

The public defender's office was appointed to represent George.

Inmate falls through ceiling into Texas police office

Mon Jun 23, 9:28 PM ET

ALTON, Texas - Authorities say an inmate trying to flee a Texas city jail crashed through the ceiling into a police chief's empty office

Police say 17-year-old Jesus Albert Suarez Chavez and 22-year-old Roman Orozco Martinez tried to escape through air conditioning ducts of the Alton city jail around 3 a.m. Saturday, but had been spotted by a dispatcher monitoring security video.

One of the inmates fell through the ceiling into the office of Police Chief Baldemar Flores. The second inmate was trying to get into the vent.

Flores said he didn't know which inmate fell through the ceiling, only that the vents were very small.

Chavez and Martinez are charged with burglary of a vehicle, evading arrest, resisting arrest, assault on a public servant and making a terrorist threat. They are now being held in the Hidalgo County Jail.

A jail official says no attorneys are listed for the pair.

GREENACRES, Fla. - A South Florida woman has been charged with theft and extortion, accused by police of kidnapping a family's cat and holding it for ransom in hopes of getting her dog returned. ·

Police said it all began in May when Linda Urioste's black Labrador Scooby disappeared from her Greenacres home.

The dog was picked up by Animal Care and Control and held for five days before being adopted by Jutta Hollar and her husband.

Hollar told WPBF News 25 that they had the pup -- now named "Buddy" -- about two weeks when they received word that Urioste had stopped by Animal Care and Control looking for him.

Hollar said that she and her husband were considering returning the dog until they met with Urioste to discuss the situation.

"But she was very rude and yelled at us and treated us really not very nice," Hollar told WPBF.

She said that they decided that Buddy was staying put when Urioste threatened to sue them.

A few days after the confrontation, Hollar realized that the family's cat, Mitz, was gone from her usual outside spot. Hollar began to wonder where the cat could have gone when she received a phone call from Urioste.

"I was the used-to-be-owner, but I was wondering if you were missing a gray (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't) cat. Because a (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't) cat ran out in front of my car not far from your house and I saved its life. I almost ran him over. So, I was just wondering how you are enjoying Scooby, because I am enjoying your (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't) cat while he is in his crate. You call it crate, I call it a cage. Have a nice day," Urioste is heard saying on a answering machine tape.

Greenacres police said that Urioste admitted to them that she had the cat and refused to give it back unless the Hollars gave her dog back.

Urioste was arrested and charged with theft and extortion.

Mitz was returned to the Hollars' home safely.

"When I realized what she had done, it was just unbelievable. Just unbelievable," Hollar told WPBF.

Urioste did not return a phone call for comment. According to a police report, she told police that she waited so long to look for her dog because she thought he had been stolen.

Police nab two cannabis growers in cemetery

HANOI (Reuters) - Police have detained two custodians who were about to harvest their first crop of cannabis, a source of drugs like hashish and marijuana, from a cemetery in Vietnam's capital, a state-run newspaper reported on Monday.

Police took in Nguyen Manh Hung, 44, who heads the caretaker team at the cemetery in Hanoi's outer district of Hoang Mai, and Ho A Lau, 46, after the authorities found cannabis plants grown on a 25 square meter (82 square feet) patch, the Vietnam Labour Confederation-run Lao Dong newspaper said.

Lau, a tribal man from the northern mountainous province of Son La bordering Laos, testified he obtained the seeds in Son La for cultivation from early 2008 and that the harvest would soon start.

Vietnam has strict drug trafficking laws, including in some cases the death penalty, but it has long been used as a transit point for trade in heroin, hashish, opium, amphetamine pills and other illegal drugs.
