Theunicornhunter 2 Posted June 30, 2004 (edited) This is a sad story - every year people fail to realize fireworks are dangerous. Please be careful this weekend. Explosion as fireworks shot from car kills driver Tuesday, June 29, 2004 Posted: 10:25 PM EDT (0225 GMT) MELBOURNE, Florida (AP) -- One man was killed and another was burned over 90 percent of his body when fireworks they were shooting from their car accidentally ignited inside the vehicle, police said. The first officers reporting to the scene said some fireworks were still shooting from the Toyota Corolla when they arrived. The car was destroyed. The man in the passenger seat escaped the flaming vehicle a few blocks before it crashed into a light pole. The driver, who died Tuesday, was unable to get out of the car until after the crash. Artavis Walker, 23, died at the hospital, while 27-year-old Antonio Robinson was listed in critical condition. Kyra_Ashleigh 0 Posted June 30, 2004 Thanks for the reminder! I'll share my fireworks story if ya'll don't mind... When I was 8, I had a M80 with a short fuse go off a few feet away from the right side of my head. I only have 50% hearing on that side now. I got off really lucky! Please, for those of you who can get fireworks, please be careful with them!
Jim Phaserman 0 Posted July 1, 2004 I've never had a Firework go off near me, but I've had a grenade go off. One thing to keep in mind is that Fireworks are explosives. they have just as much potential to kill and injure you as a grenade does, so be careful when using them. also, do not use any fireworks that have some sort of launching charge or are a ground detonating type on dry grass or brush. this is a serious fire hazard. if you are going to launch fireworks or detonate them, make sure you do it away from anything that could catch fire. I know I sound like your parents, but trust me, I know the dangers of having something go BANG right next to you *rubs arm*
A l t e r E g o 9 Posted July 1, 2004 When i was 12 or so a friend of mine showed off his stupidity; said if you hold a firecracker between your fingers at the bottommost tip it will pop harmlessly. NOT! It didn't break the skin but it did burn and cause his fingers to swell massively.
removed 0 Posted July 1, 2004 I know someone who had illegal fireworks, lit it, saw a cop drive by, tucked it under his arm so that the cop wouldn't see it, and it went off and burned his arm. It's sick looking. He's alright though.
Delta 0 Posted July 1, 2004 I used to work on the burns unit and have seen many horrific injuries caused by fireworks, both to adults and children as young as two years old. In my opinion fireworks should not be sold to the general public.
hangon 3 Posted July 1, 2004 (edited) In holland you can only set off fireworks on new years eve,and every year they have so many ppl who have blow off there fingers with what they call firework bombs these are home made bombs made in bottles, about 4 years ago while at a friends the boy who lived next door lost 3 fingers his eye and had glass in his heart form such a bomb,i spent half the night looking for his fingers,IMO fire works should be left to the Pro's. Schuschu 0 Posted July 1, 2004 here, fireworks are sold only on new years, too. but what turned out to be another problem, beside the wrong use of official fireworks, are the selfmade ones. the kids just collect stuff, they find the day after new year, or built them with household things. a friend of mine, who happened to stand near such a "bomb" burned her hole back. another one are cheap fireworks from poland etc.. nobody can predict them, 'cause they're not checked by any authority ... so ... new year's gonna get fun as every year :o but people just don't learn
