  1. I think, Jack, that would be a Naval Commando design, probably red signifying an Officer, Yellow signifying something like a Combat Engineer, and the blue/teal signifying a Corpsmen. I do have another question: Is there anything like a Flak Jacket that these Marines could wear? or a helmet? obviously it's not going to be Phaserproof, but if the enemy uses grenades, it could cut down on casualties caused by fragments from those.

  2. A chameleon style uniform, LOTB? While that would be very cool, I don't know that it would be feasible, even in the 24th century. The combat uniform Jim designed is, as he said, based on the 21st Century US Marine Corps Battle Dress Uniform. the uniform is pretty effective, and actually more so than the previous design pattern. Each marine would probably be issued a uniform like the one Manveru posted as a general work uniform, such as for instances around the ship, and probably when serving aboard a vessel as part of a security force. However, part of each Marine's outfitting would probably include a couple of pairs of different patterned uniforms, OR, given Starfleet's replicator capabilities, a detailed surface scan could be completed, and the computer could design a pattern for the individual planet, and each Marine replicates three or four uniforms.

  3. I'm not really familiar with military terms but do they call a jail the Brig in the Army or Air Force? Same question regarding the bridge, decks, hatches and flagship? How about phrases like "prepare to be boarded" or "deploy the fleet"? Of course Trek has shipyards such as Utopia Planitia.

One of the resident Sailors may be better suited to answer this, rather than a Marine, but the Brig is a term more commonly used by the Navy. I believe the Army uses the term "Stockade". the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Gaurd are really the only services that use terms such as Deck, Bridge, Hatches, Scuttlebutt, because of the fact that we are based on ships. to the Air Force, the term Deck means the ground. and a bridge is something that spans a river that gets blown up.

  4. Alright, Here's my understanding on this subject...

ALL School Districts that have children recite the pledge DO allow students to not participate in the saying of the Pledge for any number of reasons. Political reasons (IE, You are NOT a US Citizen, which by the way, there are probably many students in the California School System to which that applies), and religious reasons. If you don't want to say "Under God", then don't. the Original Pledge did not have the term in there, so just say the pledge in it's original context. there is no "law" saying you HAVE to say "One Nation, Under God". I hate it when an extremely small minority (Which athiests are, something like 2%) Try and force THEIR beliefs on the majority. 98% of Americans believe in some sort of religion. That may not neccissarily mean they believe in a Divine Being, but the point stands. If the Courts start ruling to make everyone concede to the demands of a 2% minority, we may see something similar to Aparthied here in the US.

  5. Port, Starboard, For, Aft, Bow, Stern, Deck, Bulkhead (I think that was mentioned) All the ranks from Ensign to Fleet Admiral, I think the term Below was used once. I don't recall anyone ever using the term "Topside" or "Abaft". But, How else would you refere to the parts of your ship other than using Nautical terms? I've even heard Air Force Pilots refere to "Port" And "Starboard" when discussing their aircraft.

  6. Arrrg...Can I smack the living *bleepity bleep bleeep* outta Ahmad Carrol? I swear, those refs were wearing Detroit Lions t-shirts under their Zebra Stripes. That "Interception" They reviewed was no Interception....Geez...what a lousy frickin' game...

  7. I am a christian and proud to be one. I have also discovered, though, through many months spent in a muslim country, that we have more in common with our muslim brethren than we might think. Take for example, the Angel Gabriel from the Bible, he also appears in the Koran, known as Jibrial. his message to Mary also appears in the Koran, though it is my understanding that muslims do not believe, as Christians do, that Jesus is the son of god, but that he is according to the Koran a Prophet of God.

  8. I think the boys from the Illidelph will stomp on them Dirty Birds from the Southland. And, I don't think anyone who picked the Pack to tame the Lions picked wrong. I'm not sure about anything else, except that the Bears will go 0-15 this year and have 6 different starting quarterbacks (Which means three more, since they've already started three this year, in just the preseason alone)

  9. Well, folks, I've returned to my home town, this time with wife and daughter in tow. As many of you know, about 6 months ago, I was badly injured in an accident while serving my country in Afghanistan. While I have now regained much of my ability to walk, and with rehab, will be able to sustain a run within about another month, I had to make a choice. I could stay in the Marine Corps, but find a new MOS, since the doctors really don't think they could clear me for any direct combattant role, or I could leave the Corps and persue a career in civilian life. I came to the decision to leave, based one two things: One, my initial enlistment is up next month anyways, and two, being Infantry, as funny as this may sound, is what I really wanted to do in the Marines. So, I'm on terminal leave now, and looking for a job that pays decent around my home town, and looking for a house. I'm back, though.

  10. You would serve in starfleet as a Lieutenant. Your current assignment is in Security/Tactical. Any of the following positions could be available on a Starship:

    Security Systems Management

    Weapons Officer

    Torpedo Room Officer

    Chief Weapons Officer

    Security Chief

Behind every mission is the need to feel safe. Security personnel are always the first to arrive, and the last to leave. They understand that danger can come from any direction and are always prepared for the fight that may never come. Through this dedication, loyalty and attention to detail they give us this feeling of safety. We all appreciate this because underneath it is hope. The hope that we should all learn from our mistakes, face our fears and live long enough to appreciate the beauty the universe shows us every day.

    Are you surprised? I aren't

  11. I know magazines manipulate images in certain ways, like making an actress look slimmer than she is, or airbrushing someone's teeth to cover the fact that they look like a Ferengi, but generally Newspapers and TV won't doctor images so much as they will selectively edit which images they use, and selectively choose their wording.

Edit: A good example is Stuff's cover with Eva Longoria. By looking at the picture, you wouldn't guess she's only like 5'2"

  12. I guess I am a cynic too.  Politicians say things to get quoted or get their picture on tv.  Some may be religious.  However it personally bothered me to hear President Bush talking about the Pope as a man of peace, becuase I consider Bush to be the exact opposite imo.  Let another religious leader say this about the Pope and I will take those remarks more seriously.

Trekz, you REALLY don't know a whole lot about John Paul II, do you? He WAS a peace-maker. He went to Jerusalem to the Wailing Wall and left a note to God asking him to forgive the catholics for their treatment of Jews, AKA, he was the FIRST Pope to APOLOGIZE for atrocities committed by Catholics to Jews. he was also the first Pope to step foot into a Mosque. He WAS a Man of Peace, and President Bush wasn't just paying lip service. as a religious man, I think President Bush truely admired John Paul II. Other politicians, the more Secular ones, probably were giving a bit more lip service to the Pope, but, still, he was a truely good person, and I think the WORLD should be in mourning over the loss of such a good man.

  13. Officially? Noone, really. no major acts will occur in the church (Acts like changing the various stances the Catholic Church has, such as those of contraception and female priests) until a new pope is elected. however, the senior member of the College of Cardinals will probably be the acting head of the church.

  14. My condolences to those who feel a personal loss for the Pope's passing.

I hope you understand as well, that I don't view death as a terribly sad thing when it comes at the natural end of a life, especially one so well lived.  The sadness is for those that remain behind.

I think though, his successor will have a daunting task ahead of him.

    315591[/snapback]

you are definately right that his successor has some big shoes to fill. I was saddened to hear of the Pope's passing, but also relieved that he is now with God and no longer suffering. I am sure he will have a special place in heaven.

  15. Bury me and put me in the ground. nothing too fancy for a grave marker. I was thinking something traditional, a bronzed pair of boots, rifle, and helmet, with a plaque with my name on it and DOB and DOD.
