  1. I think it probably has some significance, but probably more ceremonial than actual meaning. Starfleet takes alot of it's traditions from the US Navy, as is evident by the rank structure. the RN, for example, doesn't have the rank of Ensign, but rather starts at Sub-Leftenant, the equivelent of a Lieutenant JG in the US Navy. Alot of the Naval traditions of Starfleet are general Naval traditions, but I would say drawn from the US Navy because Gene Roddenberry was American, and he knew more about the American Navy than any others. USS is probably just a hold-over from the US Navy.

  2. Thanks, Kor. and you are welcome, also. I'll probably always look back on my service with the Marines as a high-point in my life. Sure, the last 7 months or so in the Corps was tough, but I plowed through it with typical Marine Corps tenacity. When alot of you think of the VFW, you probably think about guys in their 50's and 60's, but I'm actually joining. I was actually eligable to join before my 20th Birthday. I take alot of pride in the fact that I can call myself a Marine.

  3. This time last year, I was in a wheelchair, looking forward at a bleak few months stuck there, and some intense physical therapy. After the events of the past year, I have a newfound respect for the folks who can't get out of their chairs. Dispite the fact that the entire time I was in the chair, I wore a Military Uniform, I still got alot of odd looks and stares. Now, alittle over a year after the injury that put me in one, My doctors have cleared me for some slightly more risky endeavors. I was told by my doctor yesterday that if the opportunity presents itself, he would have no objections to me hitting the trails again on the snowboard (Which I actually haven't done since before I joined the Marines.) I've always been the kind of guy who says a prayer every night before bed, but now, I say one in the morning, thanking god for the simple fact that I can get out of bed and WALK to the kitchen to get my morning coffee. It's an experience that has probably changed my life as much as anything I did in the Marine Corps. It's an experience I am glad to have, though, because now I understand better what it's like for many people who are wheelchair bound. I'm actually thinking of volunteering with the Special Olympics in this area, as an official or something. Looking back, it's amazing what we take for granted, the simple things we don't notice until they aren't there.

  4. I think the reports were pretty favorable. I served with a few Marines from Detroit, and they said it could be pretty nasty at times, alot like the South Side of Chicago. the reports made Detroit seem like a pretty good place to be.

  5. Okay, pick a troubled Pro Sports team and tell us how you'd fix their problems. I'll start, by choosing my favorite. The Packers.

1st: Move Mark Tauscher (T #65) to Gaurd. He is comfortable there. Replace him at tackle with Kevin Barry, who is very good.

    2. Use some of the expected $30 million in cap room to find a good gaurd to start opposite Tauscher.

    3. Resign Gado, Green, and Davenport to 3 year deals.

    4. Sign Terrell Owens (YES, I SAID IT!) for a ONE YEAR contract. Start him opposite Walker.

    5. Pick up a few defensive players to help out against the run. retain present DB's. (So far, Green Bay has a top 10 Passing Defense, if it ain't broke, don't fix it).

This is all, of course, assuming the Magician returns next year, which I think he will, and I will not accept any other suggestion until or unless #4 says so hisself. If he's only gonna play one more year, might as well spend the money to make a Superbowl run.

  6. I predict, though, they will finish the year at 13-3. I doubt, since they have HFA and an FRB locked up, they will play Hasselbeck and Alexander, much less anyone else in their starting rotation, much past the 1st Quarter. We may also see an appearence by Aaron Rogers (Gag!) by the Packers this week, but I think Brett would like to get one more win this season. Still, nice work, Hawks. And I hope like hell they beat the Bears, should it come down to that. Go Hawks, Down with the Bears!

(Side note: As a Packer's fan, I am obliged to note that, regardless of records, Da bears still suck. Go Seahawks. Holmgren and Hasselbeck came from Green Bay, so I will cheer for them this post season)

  7. I'm gonna miss MNF on NBC. I also heard on a Football program (Can't recall if it was Inside the NFL or Total Access) that the NBC thing will incorporate "Flex Scheduling". If a game scheduled for the Prime spot is expected to be a Toilet Bowl (For example, if it were this upcoming week's royal rumble for Reggie between the Texans and the 49ers), then NBC could try and get a game that actually mattered.

  8. I don't have to deal with customers at my new job. I just deal with making sure folks who aren't supposed to be at my place of employment aren't there. Security Supervisor, gotta love it. Any job where I can carry a concealed pistol is a good job in my book. But, I do feel for you who have to work in the commercial sector. I did that when I was a kid, and it sucked.

  9. Who is the better running back? Yes, I know, Micheal Vick is technically a Quarterback, but if he stood in the pocket and actually threw the ball, would he be as famous as he is? I think if these two played on the same team, people'd be really scared. Both can run the ball well. LT can catch pretty good, and BOTH can throw touchdown passes! If you were the GM of an NFL team, and both of these guys were available in Free Agency, but you could only afford one, who would you pick? Micheal Vick, or Ladanian Tomlinson?

  10. Jim McMahon...Lol, Not even Porky Pig was so big a Ham...

Johnny U, Papa Manning, Roger Staubach, all great players. The list of great quarterbacks is miles long. picking 3 or 5 or 20 is a difficult chore. What about Bart Starr? The man who led the Packers to two Superbowl wins and a few World Championships prior? Of course, Starr was coached by the greatest Coach ever to hold the title.

  11. the name "Jim Phaserman" has a story behind it. a few years ago, back before I joined the Navy, My brother (Gary) and I were searching the net, and we found Startrek.com, and the chatrooms therein. this was when there were 4 chatrooms. he went in with the screen name "phaserman" and that's how THAT got started. eventually, when I started going in there to, I added a J to it. when we started simming in the holosuite, he became CptGphase (since screennames were limited to 9 letters) and I became AdmJphase. since then, any time we go into a star trek themed chatroom or message board, we use the Phaserman Family name. I've actually considered getting a copyright on it. eventually, when my wife and Gary's wife, and our little brother started chatting, we allowed them to use the name Phaserman. for those wondering, there are 5 people who are allowed to use the Phaserman name: Me (Jim), Gary, Tom, Krissy and Julie. one big happy, Direct Energy Family.

Hey now, Krissy is my biological system, if I wanted to change my name to "Sergeant Phaserman", would I be allowed to?

As for the reason for my name....

    Hard Chargin' Sarge...

When I joined this site, I was a Sergeant (E-5) on active duty with the US Marine Corps. I was, as some might say, a "Hard CHargin' Devil Dog". I figured that wouldn't fit, so I used hardcharginsarge, which is cool because it also rhymes. though I am no longer on active duty (or even in the military), Tradition states that "Once a Marine, Always a Marine", so after recieving my discharge, I was tempted to change my screen name to Darryl, or Darryl Phaserman, but remembering tradition, I am sticking with hardcharginsarge.

    OOH RAH!
