  1. Like everyone else I liked Pike, and he could have been the Capt in the series had he not had other obligations in 1966.  A couple of interesting other choices they tried were Jack Lord and Lloyd Bridges. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe both men were approached to play Cpt Kirk before a virtual nobody in William Shatner was chosen.

I believe that you are correct in saying that Lord and Bridges were considered/offered (I'm not sure which) for the part after Jeffrey Hunter turned down the chance of a second pilot. Personally I like the second pilot, as it is my favourite episode of all the Star Trek series, but the other part of me regrets that we only got one adventure with Captain Pike, who was a damn good character (perhaps better than Kirk when you consider the depth of both characters) and was played by great actor.

In retrospect I suppose we were lucky that Hunter could not do the second pilot, because sadly I believe he died in 1969, which would mean no films, no TNG or any of the other spin-offs. Had he lived longer I believe he would have gone on to be one of the Hollywood greats.

  2. Whats the general consensus about the original pilot for the original Star Trek?

While I could never imagine Star Trek without Captain Kirk I really do enjoy The Cage and Jeffery Hunter's portrayal of the troubled Captain Pike. I still think that The Cage was the best pilot of a Star Trek show, unless we include Where No Man has Gone Before (Which is my personal favourite episode).

  3. Was Lore evil?

Only after a few curries and a bottle of larger! :)

Personally, I always liked the idea that Lore was malfunctioning. This (at least in 'DataLore') gave him an eerie quality with assumption that a defective device could do anything in an unpredictable manner.

  4. Mine would have to be ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’. The fellow who played Gary Mitchell (pre 2001)was great and had that notion of a hidden darkness about him. The concept of ESP was done well and created a nemesis for Kirk that was not just evil, but as much a victim as those he killed.

    Honourable mentions go to:

City on the Edge of Forever

    Man Trap

    Space Seed

    Dagger of the Mind

    Devil in the Dark

    The Changeling

    The Cloud Minders

Let that be Your Last Battlefield

    And all the rest!!

  5. Read your profile, and you mentioned siegfried sassoon and that you are interested in war history. Did you know that he was a friend and great inspiration to the ww1 poet Wilfred Owen?

    Are you familiar with Owen?

His descriptive poetry  of life in the trenches of WW1 are excellent. He was required reading at college, and i was reluctant as i'm not a lover of poetry, but he so impressed me.

Yes, I believe they both met in a military hospital were Sassoon took on the role of mentor for the young Owen. I have read a lot of both Sassoon and Owen, but by personal favourite is Sassoon.

I find most military history very interesting and the early 20th Century is definitely my favourite period. I think that my favourite topic of the first World War is the campaign against the Ottoman empire in the middle east and Lawrence’s involvement. Arguably the importance of Lawrence is overrated as it was the strategy of Allenby that secured a victory for the Allies, but I find Lawrence’s early spirit and need for excitement indomitable and very enticing when reading his works, although it must be put into context when trying to decide the overall value, but still a very good read. If you are interested in that sort of thing try ‘The Seven Pillars of Wisdom’.

I also like Roman history, and in particular the life of Julius Caesar. He an absolutely fascinating figure and after reading several texts about his life and campaigns, you will realise that Rome never again saw a man of that kind.

P.S. Sorry of not responding sooner.

  6. oh they do not need to 'make' another Data they just need to make the new stupid b4 smart just like data.. hehe..

    ~Lauren  [/size]

Or they could download the information that Data transfered into B4 into the Enterprise computer (because we know that B4's design in not able to process that data)and then there could be a Data interface or holographic projection, hence Data could look human and Mr Spiner would not have to go through all that makeup, plus it would take account of the problem of the actor aging when the character should not.

  7. she was actually good back in TOS! good character

And that is y most of us can't picture her on the enterprise.. because we think of her old character..

well at least thats what it is like for me :dude:

    ~Lauren

I never really thought about her character in TOS when watching her performance on TNG due to the sharp contrast between the characters and the difference in her age between playing the two roles. Should you use the same arguement that actors should never return in main/major supporting roles then Mark Lenard would never have played Sarek (which would have been a shame)!!

Anyway, I liked Polaski because of her bite and after a while she over came her differences/misunderstanding with Data which eventually strengthened their friendship, indeed, it was that inability to fully understand Data that highlighted his equality and rights among his crew in a way that enriched the character. Polaski also had a relationship with the captain by anoying him at first but eventually bringing them closer together.

The character of Crusher was good by providing a personal interaction between her and the captain and by providing a past to Picard, however I could imagine the character being a bit like Troy by being very hard for writers to incorperate them into scripts with a meaningful role in the plot. :D

  8. It is a good film isn't it. Another interesting fact is that the model of the ship was used in many of the Twilight Zone episodes such as the Monsters are on Maple Street, and the interior was used in the one where the they steal a ship to get away from atomic warfare but at the end we are told that they are heading to earth. In my opinion the Twilight Zone was one of the best tevevision series ever and I often think about which of the two producer/creators (Gene or Rod) were the better.

  9. While I support the current action taken against Saddam Hussain that is not the issue that I want to take about. I would like to wish all the best and my support to all the US/UK troops who are willing to give their lives for our futures. May god go with them and long live the relationship that remains between our two great countries.

  10. How about Tomb of the Cybermen? That is my favourate of the second doctor and possibly my favourate overall. Spearhead form Space comes in at second fav for me. Mind you War Games would be on my top list as well.

On the issue of the X-Files, I think the best seasons were the first two but by the end of season six I just lost interest as the quality got lower. SG -1 is also a good one.

  11. Perhaps we should let Shatner write and direct a script for Enterprise and see how he would do things, but after ST5 I would be reluctant to let him do so.

Personally I think that TOS is the best with TNG just behind. But I think that Enterprise has been better that the previous two, you may disagree but that is just down to a difference in personal taste. Enterprise has got me excited about Star Trek again, and while I can see ways that I would improve the series if I were the producer, I also think that it is the best sci-fi that is currently being produced for television.

  12. Although I agree that we need more sci-fi based scripts rather than character development only scripts, I do hope that by "good stories" that Shatner does not mean any of his scripts/books :) .

Sorry was that a bit harsh? O well, I still think he was great as Kirk.

  13. Forbidden Planet is arguably the forerunner to Star Trek with it's visual look and over all mise-en-scene. But what are the views of of other Trek fans out there? What do you think of this film? Do you also think that the feel of Star Trek is evident in FP?

  14. I am also a big fan of Doctor Who (mainly Hartnell and Troughton but I also like the first few years of Pertwee + first few years of Tom Baker) and Quantum Leap. I also like the 1950s The Twilight Zone (The best television series ever, with the execption of Trek :) ) and the The Outer Limits (original), however some people may not consider the series to be sci-fi but there are many stories in each that are science fiction based or have sci-fi elements.

  15. Which character did you prefer? For me it was Pulaski as there were so many levels to the character and the actor dominated the screen, giving the character a clear role in the stories she was involved it. Sometimes I felt that the Crusher character was a bit weak and often got lost in episodes. Had Pulaski been made a continuing character in the series then I believe that she would have got a lot more screen time in the films than Crusher has.

  16. Not really a fan of the Eidelman score as I would have prefered Horner to come back (I still would). Now don't get me wrong, I do like the other composer's scores in their own way, but for me Horner's work is part of what I remember when looking back at the original (best) cast films.

As for Star Trek VI, what ruined it for me was the poor redress of the TNG sets, which were in turn redresses of the movie sets. But to many times I knew what sets were really used i.e. the President's office was ten forward and the corridors of the Enterprise were hardly even redressed, at least the redresses in ST2 were more believable. However this does not completely ruin the film for me and I realise that Nick did not have the massive funds that he deserved to make the film the best it could have been. But much improved on the very poor ST5 which made the characters look a bit silly, I mean if someone had stolen my starship and crossed the great barrier, then the last thing I would do is let him come on a landing party, Kirk should have hit him in the face and thrown him in the brig and then gone on a landing team!

  17. Jerry Goldsmith or James Horner.

For me it has to be Jimmy Horner with his fantastic scores for ST2 and 3 that are so much more emotive that Goldsmith's. For some reason Horner managed to capture the action and imagination in his music and we can see this in such moments as the death of Spock or the original Enterprise where the musical score create the impact of the scene and (at least for me) gives it more gravity.

    James Horner rocks!! :) :)

  18. Yeah, while they can always make more enterprises, they can't make another Data.  Data was interesting and a great character.  The enterprise - while somewhat important - is just a ship.  And, yes, I did hate the way Data died.

I have to say that I love the movie NCC-1701 and I think that none of the other ships (even 1701-a) are as good. While I can here you say that 1701 and 1701-A are really the same, I know that but to me it makes no difference becuase the first enterprise had the history of the series behind it and over the three movie story arc we really feel that we have been on an experence with it. That and it did not look like we were really on the Enterprise D with the same sets. And the model was just beautiful - much better looking that my girlfriend (but don't tell her. :D ).

  19. Eh...right now...Enterprise isn't so good (IMO) ...but then again the other series' only started to get better during the later seasons :D.

I completely disagree that the Star Trek series' were only good during the latter seasons. In my opinion the first two seasons of TOS were the best with episodes such as 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' and 'Man Trap'.

TNG had great episodes such as 'Conspiracy', 'To Short A Season', 'Datalore', '11001001', 'The Arsenal of Freedom', 'Skin of Evil', 'Where Silence Has Lease', 'The Measure of a Man', 'A Matter of Honor', 'Time Squared', 'The Royale' and 'Peak Performance'. These episodes are not only the best of the first two seasons but what many consider among the best of the series, unless you truely believe that these represent poor television and that the rubbish that we got from the last few seasons of DS9 and Voyager are better. Can you honestly say that 'Homestead' from Voyager or 'Strange Bedfellows' from DS9 is better than 'The Measure of a Man' or 'Time Squared'?

The problem that we have encountered since the end of TNG is the focus on unnecessary over-charactisation in most episodes in DS9 and Voyager by looking at everyday cliched events of a typical life, by doing this Star Trek has turned from a sci-fi television show into a second class soap that housewives watch. Enterprise is a move away from that sentimental

soapness that signified ds9 and voyager and concentrates on science fiction concepts, action and charactisation within these concepts rather than just charactisation alone. THAT is why I have paid out alot of money to buy every video of Enterprise so far, while I only own one video of ds9 (only because that was the one where Work, a TNG character, was introduced because the series needed a boost form a quality character that we actually care about) and voyager (the last episode, so that I could say thank god the pain is over).

TOS, TNG and Enterprise ROCK :D . ESPECIALLY the first few years!!!
