  1. "Oh..I also don't fit TOS Movies and TNG Movies into the Same Caragory. I see them as..well...TOS Movies and TNG Movies"

That was a quotation in a post from Sam The Smuggler in one of my other topics and it got me thinking about the general view of other fans on this subject, hence the poll.

Please, no discussion of who should be in the next film. This poll is to assess the quality of the films as a whole based on script, acting, direction, musical scores, your own personal feelings on the matterb and any other factors you consider important.

  2. I must say that I think Garak is the only character that I like on DS9, other than Worf who is not really a DS9 character anyway. Garak humour was the only one that I found amusing especially his line that "wounds will heal but I got off several insults that will last a lifetime", or something like that.

  3. I like the TOS approach where the Captain is the boss and gets all the action. This becomes important when a series is often set on alien worlds as TOS was and if the captain was left behind then in plot terms it would leave him a bit redundant i.e. Captain Duncle. However, when a lot of action happens aboard the ship then it does not really matter quite so much. As TOS is my favourire series I will vote for 'Yes', but only because I like the way the stories were structured and it would be impractical to leave the Captain on the ship most of the time.

  4. Does anyone else know any more about the Deltan race? I know they are meant to be the opposite of Vulcans and are a very sensual race, but do we know any more about them from the pre production and the conception on Phase 2?

  5. I know I'm in the minority here, but I voted for Insurrection.  I just really like the story, the setting, Picard, everything.

I like Insurection too, I thought that the coruption within the Federation could have had something to do with the aliens in Conspiracy, now that would have been a good film.

My list of odd films is as so (in order):

    1/ The Search for Spock

    2/ The Motion Picture

    3/ Insurection

    4/ Generations

The Final Frontier was a waste of afilm involving the original cast as so I do not feel it deserves a place in my list!!!

  6. Star Trek 5 is the only film in the franchise that I can confidently say has no redeeming qualities. the story is lacking in many areas and I feel that the characters do not live up to what has been created before. Basically I get the feeling that the presented view of the characters in this film is the way that Shatner has envisioned them without the guidence of an intelligent director to tell him to be quite and act.

Boy oh boy I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way! There were some cute scenes but they were far and few between. Don't get me wrong, I like Shatner but I think his, don't be offended anyone, big head got in the way of his common sense. I realize there is alot more to a movie than a director, but it's like the pitcher of a baseball team, or the quarterback of a football team, if the team looses they get blamed. Bill you dropped the ball on this one! It could have been a good addition to my collection of movies, but I think I'll leave it on the store shelf beside the "Spock's Brain" eppy!

    Katy

The thing that I find hard about ST 5 is that the end of the previous film seems really exciting with Kirk saying "Lets see what she's got" and then ST5 did not live up to it by taking the humour of ST4 and making the comedy pompous. In my opinion what was needed was another action based film perhaps with the Klingons begining a germ warfare battle against Federation planets in reaction to the events of ST 3. Hence, the hatred of the Klingons in ST 6 would have been carried over a story arc.

That is just one idea for a better script, have you any others?

  7. I find this quite a hard question as I am torn between The Search for Spock and TMP, as I consider both to be good films. Both have good musical scores and while TMP has fantastic special effects for the time, ST3 has some wonderous matte paintings such as the Vulcan setting.

In the end I think I will vote for ST3 but it was a very difficult choice, but the Horner score combined with the visual setting really pushed me to vote for it, even though TMP is the more intellectual story.

  8. Storyline - weak. Visual aspects - outstanding! And, since 1970's styling has made a major comeback the wood panelling and strip lighting look contemporary again.

Could I ask you to expand on how you thought the storyline was weak in your opinion. Thanks.

  9. I think my sisters missed the obvious...we could make our own "real" Data!

It always comes back to data..

well of course it does...you were expecting us to just forget about him? silly person, do you understand the meaning of the word, obsessed? (just being silly, here)

But, it is true that if you change one thing, that could change so many others. maybe small things that could lead to bigger things would be ok, like helping to point someone in the right direction for a cure to cancer..Aids..and a million others. making a bullet miss here or keeping someone from falling off a tall building...little stuff. Maybe...

I think guiding a civilisation in the right direction rather than making things happen without their own involvement would be the way to go.

  10. Kirk annoyed me, probably because i've never liked that old ham Shatner (superiority complex) and so that has tainted my view of Kirk.

Try what I do and remember that Shatner is not Kirk as characters are not always the same as the actors.

  11. That is a very tough question.  I don't think I would change the course of history.  To remove the mistakes of the past would condemn people of the future to live them again.  I would so want to end suffering, hunger and pain in the universe.

I would love to be able to visit places that we can't even imagine at a blink of the eye.  I would be afraid that in time I would get the arrogance of Q.

And last but not least, Data would LIVE!!!

If I were a Q then I do not thing I would impose world peace or an end to the things that trouble our society simply because it would take away from the challenge of life and the desire of the individual and world as a whole to better itself.

If I were Q then I think I would choose exile on the level of existance in while my fellow Q reside. If I were to involve myself in the goings on of a particular race then I think I would try to persuade and push a species in the right direction, as Q has had always done on TNG.

  12. The thing I did not like about Janeway in the film was that she was too friendly to have been a realistic superior to Picard.

Anyway, I am not a big fan of crossovers in general, the only exception being Worfs inclusion on DS9 which improved the series drastically.

  13. I need to go rent the motion picture, it's been years since I've seen it.

Uhura Riker, If you rent The Motion Picture be sure you rent the "new" directors edition and not the other older version. There have been some really good re-editing jobs by the director and also some special effects have been removed and replaced with better. It is actually a much better movie now then when it first came out. It flows better too!

    Ktrek

Some it is an improvement but I found that the triming down of certain scenes took away from the tension of the film. I do like the CGI stuff that has been added but not the removal of that computer voice saying "Red Alert".

  14. Star Trek 5 is the only film in the franchise that I can confidently say has no redeeming qualities. the story is lacking in many areas and I feel that the characters do not live up to what has been created before. 15. OK, I know I have posted several several times about how I hate generalisations and over simplifications. However, I just wanted to find out the general feeling about this film by other ST fans.

I think I will vote for "It was a good film". I feel this way for many reasons but the most important one is that the film deals with an entity that is larger than the usual fights between humans. There is also the idea that Voyager was built by this planet and so it is a part of us, yet it has the potential to be the ultimate down fall of the human race, hence the unknown is not entirely alien or foreign.

In essence TMP has many different levels of plot and thought provoking themes to experience in ways that ST films have not done since, perhaps it is the fact that it stands out from the rest that allows me the enjoy it. This does not mean that I view TMP as my favourite of the franchise but I certainly do not consider it to be a poor film that is lacking in certain areas (as The Final Frontier has shown).

I am sure you all will, but please post to elaborate on these general statements if you feel so inclined. Many thanks.

  16. I do not think to would be "great" because it would, in my opinion, create a negative portrayal of the English in the US market and probabily set a trend that many would find insulting should it become a generalisation of the British persona.

I do not mean to sound confrontational to you but I just wanted to highlight the view of someone who comes from the UK. To better impose this issue on a character I believe it would be more appropriate to use a nationality that is representative of the majority of the characters on the show (i.e. Americans) as it would help to highlight the fact that the actions of such a character are not the established norm for a member of that nationality.

  17. :tear: Who is decker?

Decker was intended to be the executive officer to Captain Kirk during the Enterprise's second five year mission, which would have been shown in the aborted series: Star Trek Phase II. It was then decided that Star Trek should be turned into a film and was confirmed due to the domination of Star Wars. Hence, Decker can be seen in Star Trek The Motion Picture, although he does not survive the film and has been changed to a Captain, the basis of the original character remains with his former relationship with a certain Deltan.

  18. I clicked on daleks cos i couldn't decide... but i guess robots in general would be cool, as it has already been said, they can be very scary at times!

But it would be fun if the daleks popped up in ENT!  But i would have to hide behind the sofa, which is where i usually could be found when watching dalek eps of Dr. Who when i was younger!

We the cybermen have already been used in Star Trek, so why not the Daleks. Would be good to see them going around the corridors of Enterprise.

  19. How about the poor Vulcan science officer from the first Star Trek movie?  Even though we really didn't get to see what he materialized into from the transporter malfunction, we did get to see the beginning of him being turned kind of inside out.  Leaving the picture to the imagination sometimes is best.  I always imagined him appearing on the transporter pad as a kind of lump of smoldering flesh that had but a few moment of consciousness before dying.  What an ugly way to go.

I like that one too, hence the name I chose when joining the forum. A bit silly of me to forget to mention it.

Considering that transporters are new on Enterprise I’m surprised we have not seen more of that sort of thing on the show, of course they could not show too much gore on a family show but it could be done by losing people half way through and them ending up in space or by some screeching on the end of a comm. line after a person has been transported to the surface of a planet. What do you think?

  20. Does anyone know what happened to the original sets for the Enterprise? (Please, no stories about the floor of the transporter being fliped for use in TNG, as we all know that one!).

  21. Oh yes, I love a bit of death and disintergration myself. Along with some exploding, melting, super heat exposure, poison dart and murder by a medium to large cake with icing and jam in the middle.

  22. Pick one and try to suggest how it might be used in a plot, if you feel in the mood. :D

I would choose Robots simply because they have the ability to act inhuman, hence more scary!!! :tear:

A part man, part cat being might also be cool. :P

  23. I also liked Gary's death in the episode 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' (big rock falls on him while in grave. Now that is forward planning!!). The thing that I like about that episode is the topic of ESP and the way that it is explored and has not been touched on in the same way since. Perhaps that could be the plot of a new TNG film?
