  1. I think for me the perfect Trek is the original series, I was watching The Wrath of Khan last night, it was the first time for quite a while but even though I have seen it many times it just reminded me of how good Trek can be.

I know it comes down to personal opinion but TOS (including the movies) just wipes the floor with any of the others. I don't think it is any one thing, but everything from the characters to the scripts seems to gell together to make something very special indeed. So as I see TOS as the benchmark obviously anything close to it is better for me, and I think Enterprise (after DS9 and Voyager) seemed a welcome return.

  2. I really liked Enterprise but I have to disagree that it is the best trek since TNG. DS9 will always be the number 1 trek for me. The dominion war was beutifully done nad will always hold a special place in my heart.

I think the reasons that you stated there about why you love DS9 are ironically the same reasons why I disliked it and saw Enterprise as a return to form. TNG took character development quite far and I quite enjoyed the odd episode being focused on characterisation (especially notable are Family and the episode where Data starts dating, I forget the name at the moment), however DS9 seemed to be firmly focused on characterisation to a greater extent and for me it began to be to the detriment of the external situations and adventures. I think the thing I really like about Star Trek is the fact that we can go to different places and confront different threats in indivdual adventures each week, DS9 is much more constrained as a series and while I respect that some people might have found that facet of the show interesting I have to say that it was not for me quite so much.

I'm also not quite so keen on the idea of war in Star Trek, or at least a prolonged one. For me Star Trek has always been about an ideal, a time when famine and war are things that have been extinct for a long time. Now obviously Star Trek has always been about threats (threats to the crew from monsters of the week, or from other civilisations such as the Klingons) however all out war always seemed to be averted at the last moment and I guess that was something else I really liked about the show.

Ironically I liked the idea of showing a war in the Star Trek universe in Enterprise a lot more because it was meant to be about a time where humans were trying to live up to the ideals of those shows set in its future and it allowed us as viewers to see the struggle towards that ideal (knowing that humanity in the Trek universe would eventually get there) rather than see the ideal crumble as in DS9.

  3. For me Enterprise really was the best Trek since The Next Generation. The is the obvious, we are back on an Enterprise with different standalone episodes making up the majority of the stories. Not only that but the writers seemed to ditch the focus in the interpersonal relationships of the crew and take the focus back to the adventure of exploring space and coming up against alien threats.

  4. Space: 1999 was good but personally I was more of a UFO man, although of the two I think Space 1999 was the more popular with a bigger audience. There was also a film, not very well known mind you, that had a similar feel to both shows. It had several titles and can't be found on Amazon, but I think it was called Doppleganger.

It will be interesting to see how many of these productions have crossed the water to America and which one's did not.

  5. I've just been watching UFO recently and I was just wondering what everyone else thought about the Gerry Anderson productions.

Personally I think they were great for the time and could rival some of the US productions easily. For me UFO is my favourite live action Anderson production, with Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet at the top of the puppet shows. For me I would say the top 5 are:

    1) Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons

    2) UFO

    3) Thunderbirds

    4) Space:1999

    5) Joe 90

  6. I am a Bond fan and these fanboys don't speak for me. Personally I disliked the Brosnan films and thought they were too gimicky. Having seen Craig in several films I would say he is a great actor, much better than Brosnan in many respects, and I look forward to a Casino Royale that looks back to the original novels for influence.

I wish these individuals would look at some of the lad's work, like Layer Cake, before making a decision.

  7. Sorry, I just couldn't pick 5!

    1. Don't Let Me Down

    2. And Your Bird Can Sing

    3. Long And Winding Road

    4. Helter Skelter

    5. Baby's in Black

    6. She Loves You

    7. Tomorrow Never Knows

    8. I'm Happy Just to Dance With You

    9. In My Life

    10. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

John - A Working Class Hero

    Paul - Every Night

George - Got My Mind Set on You

Ringo - It Don't Come Easy

  8. Even though this is prolly a competitor thereof, but has anyone tried out any of Starship Exeter yet?

Personally I prefer New Voyages because of the continuation aspect and of course the involvement of big names from the original series, but I did watch one story from Exeter and thought it was enjoyable. Worth a look at the very least.

  9. GREAT!!

TNG is the only realistic way to go. For me the only other option would be an Enterprise movie as I don't think the other shows could make it on the big screen.

If we did (fingers crossed) get a new TNG film then I would like to see it move away from being an all out action film, like Nemesis, and be a bit more thoughtful like Star Trek 4. Something more character driven with a bit of adventure in between.

  10. Pierce took a pretty good beating on DAD, but I've seen the OOOOLLLLLLDDDD TV version of Casino Royale so I know what you say when you talk about beatings.

Everybody likes Q, people likes Q's gadgets. Part of the coolness of Bond came from the new gadgets he would use on each movie. The dialogue between Q and Bond I would never trade away, classic stuff

I do agree with one point you made, he must be a very good actor if you hated the new guy in the movie you saw him in. I say that to everytime some one says, man that guys was a punk in that movie. It shows good acting abilites that you hate his character. I think he would make a GREAT Bond if he can get that kind of response out of people

I agree with you, Q was a great character and I enjoyed when he would introduce a jazzed up version of the DB5 or dart cigs, but for me gadgets can also ruin that aspect of the film if taken too far. Things like the invisible car are completely unbelievable and make Bond more of a superhero than a spy. A completely indestructible Bond who can do anything does not add to the creation of tension and removes the suspension of disbelief.

For me a gadget should be potentially realistic and understated - look at From Russia with Love or even Goldfinger for good examples.

  11. dyed hair and make up with the beard gone could fix that :) .

Even though it's not an "official" Bond movie, you have to remember how old Sean Connery looked in Never Say Never Again. So having an older looking Pierce could still work

Alternatively we could just get Sean back and cgi his face to make him look younger. Anyone got the number of ILM?
