  1. Dayum, this board has a lot of smilies... anyway...

I'm told this is an open board, in that I am free to voice my opinions on the show and it's values, so here goes...

So, what do I make of Star Trek's latest incarnation?

From other posts I've made, it's possible to infer a dislike of the show, so I thought I'd clarify things.

I don't dislike Enterprise. I've watched a handful of episodes all the way through, some I've watched part of. Some of it I've liked. I actually quite liked 'The Expanse'. The pilot episode too, was quite enjoyable, and there have been flickers of fun across the show. The problem is, that for the most part, Enterprise doesn't have enough going on to make it noteworthy. The characters aren't interesting. There's none of the interplay of the sort we saw between Spock and McCoy, Kirk and Spock, Picard and Data... there's no fierce, uncomprimising character like Odo, or michevious character like Dax. There's also a flatness about the stories too- TOS took risks and made bold statements about the issues of the day, and TNG also had intriiguing social commentary. From a creative viewpoint, DS9 was strong because it dared to give us a darker Trek, one where everything was no so clean cut and we saw the most three-dimensional characters of the franchise. There's none of that in ENT. Half the episodes I've seen seem to revolve around peeling off T'Pol's clothing, and where the writer's reach a block, they throw the Borg at us.

In all, ENT has some interesting moments, some fun and intriguing glimpses of how what we know came to be. Sadly, I fear with this temporal cold war business, the producers are setting up a giant reset button, so that the time line is miracolously (sp?) preserved. Worse yet, the producers will decide they don't care and ruin the time line.

Some fine points there, I agree Ent is missing that "spark" that the other Treks have shown and can only hope the writers don't mess with the time line. You've heard correctly and Abakai put it nicely..but nevertheless..Welcome to the boards.

  2. I can't find the thread where we discussed this already, but I preferred Jadzia..I'm not really sure why, maybe because I was just used to her being around. Ezri just didn't fit IMO.

I'm not asking who was better, I'm just asking what you thought of Ezri Dax as her own character.

and I'll re-iterate for you..I never found Ezri to fit in with the rest of the cast and saw her to be an outsider..but again, that could be because I was so used to Jadzia B)

  3. Well, cartoons are intended to be humerous, where as a show like X-Men Evolution would be called an animated series which is for the older crowd.

you must learn how to write without sounding "all-knowing." Animated shows are still cartoons and when they are shown at 3pm and 10 am on saturdays are still directed towards children, not the "older crowd."

  4. Would it? When a Star Trek move is released in theatres..We ( die hard fans) go to see our loved characters who've we've grown with and watched go through other adventures. The try to make it 'just an action film' with star trek themes but the other half of the fan base still stays away. Introducing a brand spanking new cast would make it just another adventure film while "borrowing" star trek storylines.

  5. Too bad. Stewart was what drew to TNG in the first place...STILL..and despite CJLP writes...having a full cast TNG movie without Picard could possibly happen, but with the facts of it not pulling in enough coin evident that is doubtful. The question is....with Nemisis not doing as well as predicted can Paramount warrant another film with another cast.

  6. I've only ever heard of mcGuyver from Grampa on the Simpsons.

"I'm an old man. The only thing I like is McGuyver. Hey, it's on now!"

 That's too bad..Great show..I've been trying to get eps off Kazza for a long time.

If you loved McGuyver, I recommend you watch Stargate SG-1, starring Richard Dean-Anderson from McGuyver.  Take O'Niel, Jackson, and Carter, squish 'em into one person, and you get McGuyver!

I disagree he was a very shrewd man who was always one step ahead of any problems and therefore had more depth then O'Niel, Jackson, and Carter put together.

  7. Having us think Kirk was a "skirt chaser" added alot more interest to the character didn't it? Despite the facts that you've so nicely put down..The character of Kirk will always be a ladies man to me.

  8. I loved it. All movies these days are ridiculous and predicatable..although Matrix shares its " I knew that was going to happen" moments, its one of the best movies I've seen since Red Dragon....plus with flics like Hollywood Homocide and Dumb and Dumberer and The Hulk...Matrix was definitly a pleasure to watch when the highest drawing attraction is a lost fish. (IMO) no offence meant O' fearless leader.

  9. Hey..

    Click for Spoiler:

Do you think Janeways asked for Data's help or for Picards?

    Click for Spoiler:

    Data:

1: He's immune to being assimilated

2: Janeway would never ask Picard off his mission for a personal (or not personal) favor.

3: With Picards visions of the Borg and lingering connection, Janeway would know better than to ask him.

Mage..You sound pretty sure of youself..

    Click for Spoiler:

Homecoming part one, dealt a little bit with Picards recurring nightmares of the Borg..He could very well be 'Locutus' to some..as ridiculous as it seems..You say Data is immune to being assimilated..I'm not 100 % sure of that, despite what we saw in the movies. Sure asking for Data's help would make more sense ( as predictable as ST always is ) but using Picard would make me happier and let him finally expell his demons.

  10. i re-iterate, i was quoting Nana Visitor, in an interview near the series end - Janeway did way more than bomb; for the first time in a ST series, a woman was in charge, and it worked - for seven years, i might add - hmm, Voyager's home, so no story ... guess that means Starfleet makes ships that are meant to get lost - once found, it's dry-dock for the Intrepid-class - awright, awright, it's just an opinion (opposition?)

Nice showing of emotion on your two posts. As I've said before.. i think the best bet for another movie is with a mixed cast..somewhat like Generations with TOS and TNG.."we need more Janeway - she and Kirk were both Admirals, who returned to their refitted ships, who both had Borg counter-parts" Huh..Kirk and the Borg :o I'm sure..If theyput their minds to it, that Janeway could find herself aboard DS9.

  11. No. Lolly pop said it perfectly..The Borg weren't mentioned in TOS and more eps with them would only make us wonder why. The beauty of Enterprise is that we can be introduced to new aliens instead of those we've seen menace other trek shows.
