  1. People are becomming lawyer happy. I wish more lawyers would be like hardcharginsarge's dad. he won't take any lawsuit that doesn't stand a chance of winning, or that, to him, sounds frivolous. Maybe these lawyers need to start charging insanely high fees for lawsuits. like 90% of the Lawsuit's worth. but only if the Suit could be considered frivolous. then we'd see a big drop in these stupid time wasting lawsuits.

  2. the name "Jim Phaserman" has a story behind it. a few years ago, back before I joined the Navy, My brother (Gary) and I were searching the net, and we found Startrek.com, and the chatrooms therein. this was when there were 4 chatrooms. he went in with the screen name "phaserman" and that's how THAT got started. eventually, when I started going in there to, I added a J to it. when we started simming in the holosuite, he became CptGphase (since screennames were limited to 9 letters) and I became AdmJphase. since then, any time we go into a star trek themed chatroom or message board, we use the Phaserman Family name. I've actually considered getting a copyright on it. eventually, when my wife and Gary's wife, and our little brother started chatting, we allowed them to use the name Phaserman. for those wondering, there are 5 people who are allowed to use the Phaserman name: Me (Jim), Gary, Tom, Krissy and Julie. one big happy, Direct Energy Family.

  3. While Voyager was lost in the Delta Quadrant, I allways figured they pulled into alien starnbases when in need of more serrious repairs like EJP suggested.  My question is: who was in charge of repainting Voyager's hull after repaits? :cloud9:

the answer to that one is simple, Cap, the 10 or 15 most junior enlisted guys on the ship. they probably also assigned the most junior of the Assistant Division Officers from the Damage Control Division to supervise.

  5. First things' first: Forcefields keep the air in after the breach has occured. then, a crew will go out and remove the rough, bent, and sharp edges around the breach. left with a smooth edge, they then bring in the hull patches, fit them to the hole, and affix them through any number of methods. then, at their next convienience, they make their way to a starbase for a more "Permanent" repair. this part is required, because outer hull patches applied out in space by the crew are designed as a temporary fix. and there is also a high likelihood that some of the interior supporting bulkheads were damaged, and those need to be fixed. there is alot more to fixing a hull breach than just slappin' a Colission mat over it.

  6. I think Riker has every right to be assigned to a starship of ANY class. being an executive officer is something of a cross between a reward for years of service and exemplary leadership, and also an apprenticeship for future Captains. Riker has proven time and again that he is more than capable as a Captain. more capable, in fact, than probably most of the Captains in Starfleet. I see no reason why he should be relegated to an older ship on it's way out of the fleet. rather, it would be doing him a disservice.

  7. Actually, even in modern shipbuilding, not each ship of a class is identicle. the USS Wisconsin, third ship in the Iowa class, for example is larger than the other ships (partially because of a run-in with a destroyer, litterally) also, some ships within a class may have a different configuration. look at American guided missile cruisers. the first few ships of the Ticonderoga class cruisers. they have one form of missile launcher, while later versions have another. so, tieing it back into Star Trek, Let's say the Excelsior is 435 meters long, and 35 decks thick. the Enterprise B may be 480 meters long and 35 decks thick, but the Enterprise B is also newer and more advanced, and might have some new systems that require more room.

  8. I have to agree that, from a strategic or tactical standpoint, weapons emplacements on the moon aimed at earth are stupid you want to try something productive as far as defense goes, why not just shoot cotton swabs at a tank?

Seriously, though, going to the moon is a good idea. and I have said this about many of Bush's plans, including, yes, the IRAQ WAR. as I posted in another thread along similar lines, I am too tall to be an astronaut, or I was anyways last time I checked the requirements.

  9.

You can take any economics paper, take out the calculus and empiracle data, throw in some inherently unprovable assumptions about human behavior with technical-sounding terms like "social stratification", and turn it into a sociology paper.  But you can not take a sociology paper and turn it into an economics paper.

Amazing how that works, right, Van roy?

  10. Driving with no helm sucks. and in space you can't exactly rig something up. but the landing scenes are cool...but like I stated in another Voyager post, it's not exactly a small ship we are talking here. an Aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class displaces about 100,000 tons of seawater with a full load, and I think the Nimitz is actually smaller as far as height when compared to Voyager. so obviously your landing struts had better be pretty strong, and it is advisable to find some VERY solid ground. even a conservative estimate that at 1 G the Voyager weighs 200 MILLION pounds, or about 100,000 tons, is ALOT of wieght. now, I could picture Voyager landing in water....assuming that the water is deep enough and the ship is boyant enough.
