Now in his new TrekMovie.com interview, Meyer can’t say for certain why the project hasn’t moved forward at the remerged ViacomCBS, but he believes in part it has to do with how streaming has changed things:

    Quote

Well, I don’t consider it dormant because I think it’s it’s a terrific project. I think what happened, or up to a point what happened, was that the business model for streaming was changing really fast. And what was originally commissioned as a three-hour or three-night event, by the time I finished writing it, three hours was not enough. They wanted longer stuff. And somewhere between those two imperatives, the thing sort of fell between two stools. And I still don’t know why they’re not doing it, even if it’s to say, ‘give us ten episodes instead of three or whatever.’ I don’t know why.

It is certainly the case that executives from CBS as well as Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer in charge of the Star Trek Universe, used to talk about limited series being part of the mix of their streaming plans for Star Trek. In fact, when Star Trek: Picard was initially announced, it was reported to be a limited series (or a “10-part movie”).

Meyer revealed to TrekMovie that it was Alex Kurtzman who originally proposed the idea of the Khan miniseries:

    Quote

The whole idea of it was Alex’s idea. He came to me and said, ‘What do you think about this?,’ and I was over the moon about it. I just thought it was such a great idea. And couldn’t wait to do it.

When asked by TrekMovie if he believes the Ceti Alpha V project could be expanded beyond his 3-episode plan and possibly turned into an ongoing series, Meyer was skeptical:

    Quote

Well, that may be a defect of imagination on my part. I think if it went on and on and on about Khan and Ceti Alpha V  it risks becoming a kind of Gilligan’s Island. Which I think is a wrong idea… It was commissioned as a three-hour thing and there were certain parameters that were put down, to which I adhered. And they’re all fungible.

The dilemma appears to be about finding a way to spread costs and maximize revenue by extending beyond just three episodes, while still making the story work without repeating itself. A longer series would also have to fit with Star Trek canon, which established the genetically enhanced crew of the Botany Bay remained in exile and the Federation was unaware of the explosion of Ceti Alpha VI.

Of course, there could also be other reasons why Kurtzman and Paramount+ have chosen not to move forward—at least not yet—with this project.  While Meyer still feels strongly that the Ceti Alpha V project is a good idea, he confirmed that he still has not heard anything about the status of it.

  2. Here we go again, Paramount has hired new scribe to pen a story for the big screen.

Payne/McKay, Mark Smith and Noah Hawley all had their big screen Trek scripts poo-pooed by the studio

Difference here is JJ is listed as a producer so maybe that'll make a difference in getting this one across the finish line.

ViacomCBS today announced that the Star Trek Universe will head to Paramount +. The news was revealed during ViacomCBS’ Investor Day event for its highly anticipated new streaming service. Included within the line-up is the upcoming all-new animated kids’ series Star Trek: Prodigy which will now premiere on Paramount+ in the U.S. in 2021. Developed and produced by Nickelodeon and CBS Studios, Prodigy is the first Star Trek series for the kids and family audience and will bow later this year on Nickelodeon.

A first-look image of the Star Trek: Prodigy bridge crew was also released today.  In Prodigy, six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise, but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. Kate Mulgrew was previously announced as reprising the iconic role of Captain Kathryn Janeway to lead this brand new Prodigy bridge crew.

  4. Inconsistency in Star Trek? I'm Shocked!

Actually It happens a lot, both within series and between individual series. Putting up with these Inconstancy is part of the game if you wanna have fun being a Star Trek fan.

As you grow in your fandom, try to remember this... It's a quote from Dr. McCoy to Mr. Spock about questioning the lyrics of the Song, Row Your Boat. Spock stops the song and says "Life is not a dream." McCoy: "It's a song, you green blooded Vulcan! The words aren't important, what's important is you have a good time singing!"

Try to place importance of the story you are watching at the time over how well it aligns with any earlier or later continuity. Star Trek is wonderful! Marvelous! We love it sooooo much! But, it is not a religion! It is not perfect, it has flaws and we have to live with them. If you cannot, then your life as fan is going to be pretty miserable if all you ever see is the warts

All that said, sometimes the pain and suffering of an inconsistency (Continuity Problem) can be reduced with an application of some 'head cannon explanation'. We can think up some kind of explanation that puts a patch on the problem. These ideas are not canon, they are personal fixes in our heads for issues, but what works for you may not work for everyone.

Sometimes the producers "RETCON" a problem. It stands for "Retroactive Continuity" If a problem gets RETCONED by the makers (owners) that means that a later episode has given an official patch for an earlier continuity problem.Whenever episodes have a continuity problem the later trumps the former!

In TOS the Romulans did not have forehead ridges but later in TNG they did. "Which is it?", raged fandom for years. Then, a recent episode of Picard solved it with a single sentence. Romulans with ridges are "...from the north.

    TL;DR Don't worry about it!
