  1. I was watching the Titanic specials on the Discovery channel last night, and I was surprised at how massive RMS Titanic really was. She was built in the early 1900s, so I figured "Okay, large for her day. What? 500, 600 feet long, maybe 50 or 60 abeam?" I was off by a lot. According towww.rmstitanic.net, She measured 882 feet, 8 inches long, 92 feet, 6 inches abeam, and she was designed to draw 34 feet, 7 inches of water, displacing 52,310 tons. Compare her to the second most famous British vessel to come out of the first quarter of the 20th Century, HMS Hood. Titanic is 21 feet, 11 inches longer than Hood, though hood is wider by about 12 feet, 8 inches or so. Titanic also outdisplaces Hood in her original form, by nearly 6,000 tons. Titanic was huge. I almost didn't believe it. I didn't think they could build ships quite that big in the time she was built.

  2. With that beast Jim designed there are no tactics. You can't use it in one-on-one engagements against smaller ships, since they'd just outrun it. in Fleet engagements, it fights alot like the old Battleships and Ships of the Line, line up and hammer it out with broadsides.

  3. I'd go with the second option that Manveru named, unless it was on a Vulcan colony, since I doubt the Vulcans would change a city's official name. Cities named after important people I believe are usually NEW cities. Washington, for example. then again, I could be wrong. The other thing is, what's the date of first airing for Unimatrix Zero-One? It could be simple coincidence on the part of the writing staff, and someone wasn't paying attention.

  4. Sometimes, that's how things go. War sometimes cannot be avoided. I mean, yeah, there's diplomacy, but Diplomacy only goes so far. One side wants these concessions, and the other just won't make them, because it might cost too much, Or sometimes one side wants to work things out diplomatically, and the other just won't have any of it. The Dominion war was a case of the former, where, to avoid war, the Federation would have had to sacrifice too much. The Dominion is a group of conquerers anyways, so they probably prefered going to war from the outset, which would be why they wanted soo much in concessions to keep the peace.

  5. Alright, since I can't edit my previous post again, I'll do this...

In the Sim I am in, we have changed the uniforms entirely, and they are similar in issuance to US Navy uniforms. The designs aren't that similar, but the rank insignia is somewhat...

  6. And, also, those civilians can be a beneficial part of the ship's crews in other ways. Sure, Danny is a bartender, but to qualify for the job on that Starship, he has to be certified to conduct CPR and first aide. Medical staffs on those ships aren't terribly big, so having civilians who can help some, even if it's just slapping a bandage on, or nowing how to set a broken bone, or to do CPR, or whatever, could be usefull. It frees up the Doctors, Nurses and Corpsmen to do other jobs if Danny and Jenny from the Bar can take care of minor injuries.

  7. Jim and Gary and Odie are actually examples of that. Gary and Odie would wear the same style of uniform, both of them being Petty Officers, while Jim, being a commissioned Officer, wears a different uniform, dispite being in the same service. I think there are only 2 uniforms that have a commonality in the Navy for Officers and enlisted, and that's the Winter Blues and the Summer Whites. (though Officers do wear shoulderboards with the summer whites, rather than collar devices like they do with the Winter Blues). I might not have served in the real military, but 4 years of NJROTC and being married to a Naval Reservist will teach ya a few things. I'm getting pretty good at IDing the Rating Badges on enlisted people, too.

On that note, and maybe this is another thread, Why is it that Starfleet's enlisted personnel don't wear any sort of rating badge? I mean, even if it was just a 2-letter combo on a patch opposite their rank insignia on their collar? or have Ratings gone out of use by the 24th Century? Like, Odie you could address as QM1, or Gary as MA3, or address both as Petty Officer. I think Miles was a Senior Cheif, wasn't he? And what do you guys think his rating would be?
